[Bug 1538438] Re: apt-helper crashed with SIGABRT in __gnu_cxx::__verbose_terminate_handler()

2016-03-28 Thread michael jones
I have this issue, it occurred after installation - (A popup saying flash in
installion had failed)
1. During the installation I had chosen to install 3rd party applications.
(this includes flash)
2.Even though flash IS verified installed this error appears immediately on
first boot of fresh os, it thinks the flash installation has failed.
3.It continues to happen usually during system updates

[Bug 480210] Re: Connect to server password dialog could give more information

2011-10-27 Thread Michael Jones
Surprisingly, this bug no longer exists due to changes in the connect to
server dialog.

I'm quite happy that the connect to server dialog has been streamlined, but
very un-impressed that GNOME did nothing about this
for nearly two years (and however long before I reported the bug)

Since the bug has been resolved by virtue of the particular window no
longer existing, I'm marking the bug as invalid.

I dont see how having the original submitter, me, do anything will be
useful. This is not fixed in 11.04 and was previously considered a
confirmed bug. in fact, sebastian posted the exact line of the code that
causes the problem. Since I dont have 11.10 installed, and this issue

you to confirm the problem on 11.10

[Bug 365570] Re: apt-get http_proxy overwrites Acquire::http::Proxy settings

2011-02-02 Thread Michael Jones
@Eric Angell,

Respectfully, I disagree. I am in the process of setting up 10 Ubuntu
servers for various tasks. My company has a site wide proxy, and this is
the ONLY way to get a connection into or out of the building for all
protocols and ports. (There are various reasons for this, and it isn't
something I can change or even recommend changing. I have to deal with
it).

As such, to provide a convenient environment on my servers, I have
configured them with the http_proxy environment variable, and everything
works great. The only thing that does NOT work the way that it should is
apt. I have 10 servers. Each of which are configured to pull updates
daily. While that isn't a huge amount of data to download, it is enough
that I'd much rather have a local mirror. Towards that end, I've
installed apt-cacher-ng. I set the proxy information in
/etc/apt/apt.conf.d, as this is the only program out of all the dozens
of programs on the machine that I DON'T want talking to the company
proxy.

The environment variable should be for the general purpose usage of the
system. In the general case, all programs should direct their web
traffic through the server listed in the http_proxy environment
variable. However, any program that has been given a specific proxy to
follow in its own local configuration system should do so.

So since apt overwrites its internally configured proxy with the global
environment proxy, and apt clearly ignores the no_proxy environment
variable (I have tested this throughly. Apt is clearly ignoring
no_proxy), I am left few options (suggestions welcome here...) other
than to configure each application on each server to use the corporate
proxy, and then configure apt to use the apt-cacher-ng proxy, as opposed
to configuring the system wide variable and then apt.

In effect, this behavior is causing me a lot of unnecessary work.

[Bug 344333] Re: Repotely browsed files open strangly

2010-09-09 Thread Michael Jones
Yes. This bug still effects me, while using Lucid. I cannot test
Maverick at this time.

However, I have additional information: If the filename has a filename
extension that is known by my system to be associated with gedit, the
file opens in gedit with no problem.

If the file has an unknown extension, such as .mw (Maple worksheet,
for the Maple mathematics software), I receive the same dialog, even
though that file opens in gedit by default on my local machine.

[Bug 541933] [NEW] installed applications view resets after removing an application

2010-03-19 Thread Michael Jones
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: software-center

When using the software center in lucid-beta to remove some default
installed software, the Installed Software list resets when the
software that was removed finishes being removed. This causes my view to
go back to the top of the list, even though I had the slider nearly to
the bottom.

I would expect that the entry that was removed to fade out, and the
contents of the list below it to slide up to take its place.

[Bug 341006] Re: ease cloning of virtual images by disabling mac address rules

2010-02-11 Thread Michael Jones
Just my two cents here:

I ran into this issue last week. I was attempting to clone a virtual
machine on a remote server to create a new VM. The lag between my
location and the server is big enough to make doing installations
remotely a pain, but the commandline clone functionality is superb. When
I cloned the template (which is so named because it is the template for
new virtualmachines on this server), and booted the new vm, there was no
network connectivity. I logged into the machine through the Virtual
Machine Manager utility and removed the udev rules for the network card,
but it was still a good half hour searching around to find out why it
didn't work by itself.

Thanks for making such good tools, though.

2010-01-26 Thread Michael Jones
*** This bug is a duplicate of bug 307090 ***
https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/307090

I'm not sure that its correct to say that I can manually suspend my machine.
When I issue the suspend command, my monitor and sound turn off, but my
machine is clearly still running. When I suspend with heavy programs
running, the cpu fan continues to output a lot of heat, as if it were still
running the calculations.

But I can't really say either way *shrug*. I'm not familiar with how the
suspend functionality works.

 Hi Michael,

Since you can manually suspend your machine, following this information,

 https://wiki.ubuntu.com/KernelTeam/SuspendResumeTesting
 https://wiki.ubuntu.com/KernelTeam/SuspendResumeTesting/Feedback

this bug, seems to be a duplicate of this bug #307090.

 Note the Andy's comment:

AndyWhitcroft: does it resume if you request it do so by hand? If so
then this is an acpi wakeup issue. See bug 307090 in Launchpad as well
 as the upstream bug 120132

I'm going to mark it as such.

2010-01-25 Thread Michael Jones
I installed the kernel mentioned above. Same results for the testing
script.

It may not be immediately apparent, but the kernel associated with the
attachments above was one I compiled myself, based off of the official
ubuntu kernel. I made sure to test with the official 31-16 as well as
31-17, all with the same results.

Should I attach stuff from the 2.6.32 kernel?

[Bug 353833] Re: HP NW8440 does not resume from timed suspend, will wake on manual resume, jaunty beta testing

2010-01-23 Thread Michael Jones
I ran the script again,

this time, the first test fails to have any results.

The second test turns off my monitor, and sound, but my machine is
clearly still running. The only way to bring it back to a usable state
is to hold the power button until it shuts off and then boot again.

So, I don't know if I still have this issue or not.

Whats the next step?

[Bug 509919] [NEW] Hundreds of packages depend on libthai and libthai-data

2010-01-19 Thread Michael Jones
Public bug reported:

I live in the United States and speak only English and Spanish
(somewhat).

The recent update to libthai and libthai data due to arbitrary code
execution via long strings prompted me to try removing libthai and
libthai-data.

Given that I don't speak the language, and know with high certainty that
no one who uses my machine will speak it, there is no reason for it to
be on my machine.

Its not the space that it takes that bothers me (Though, it would be
nice to reclaim the space regardless), but that a package I don't need
on my machine has a security flaw that would enable an attacker to
compromise my machine.

I recognize that people who do speak the Thai language need this
library, but given that I chose my language as English at install, isn't
there anyway to remove language packages that I didn't select/don't
need?

Here is the output from the terminal:

jone...@jonesmz-laptop:~$ sudo apt-get remove libthai-data

I'll add it to my to-do list. It might take me a while to get to it. I'm a
student and have a high course load.

Thanks!

  Arky,

Thats excellent that invalid input is rejected.

Is there any way to have it repeat what selection was made?

Yes, Can you create a patch for this.

 Cheers

My intention was that orca should repeat what configuration option was
chosen for each selection. It is possible that the version you have patched
does this satisfactorily.

I'm being instructed to report a bug through ubuntu-bug by being redirected
to https://help.ubuntu.com/community/ReportingBugs. But the bug I wish to
report is one that apport refused to report. Apport reported that the kernel
had encountered a serious error while trying to suspend/resume.

Why is the ability to manually report bugs removed from launchpad for
ubuntu if Apport won't allow for packages that are installed through apt to
 be bug reported through ubuntu-bug?

[Bug 480210] [NEW] Connect to server password dialog does not indicate which server is being connected to, which username is being used, or which folder will be accessed.

2009-11-10 Thread Michael Jones
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gvfs

Consider the use case where a user is attempting to connect to two
different servers, with two different accounts, and two different
passwords. This is completely possible, but if the user attempts this
using book marks in the places menu, hitting both in quick succession,
the user may not know which dialog is intended for which
server/account/password

[Bug 478904] Re: Pidgin hangs when a specific link is inserted into the IM text field.

2009-11-08 Thread Michael Jones
The duplicate bug is on a second laptop that has the same configuration
as the origional bug. Difference being that the hanging pidgin was
installed through the install disk, while the crashing pidgin was
upgraded inline from jaunty.

Both machines are 32 bit.
