[Bug 1862545] [NEW] jenkins console is not updated on newline without linefeed
Public bug reported: Affects Version: Jenkins ver. 2.204.2 lsb_release -rd Description:Ubuntu 18.04.4 LTS Release:18.04 Problem: The jenkins console is not updated on a newline ('\r') character, is is only updated when a linefeed ('\n') character is written. Thus output from 'rsync --progress' is not visible until the rsync command finishes and then the job finishes or is terminated or a linefeed is printed (e. g. by echo command). Thus it is not visible on a long running transfer, if the transfer is still ongoing or if the connection hangs. When aborting/finishing the job or when it prints a linefeed, everything printed so far including the newlines gets visible. This is not caused by the job itself, as the following command tail -f /var/lib/jenkins/jobs//builds//log outputs the console log as expected. Thus Jenkins has all information necessary to display the console as expected. Expected behaviour: When a newline occurs, the console of the jenkins job should also be updated in real time as it is when a linefeed occurs. ** Affects: jenkins (Ubuntu) Importance: Undecided Status: New -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1862545 Title: jenkins console is not updated on newline without linefeed To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/jenkins/+bug/1862545/+subscriptions -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

This bug is quite old, but I stumbled on a broken backuppc (refusing backup due to ping) after upgrading the backup server. Backuppc now has version 3.3.0 (I am even not sure that this has changed during the upgrade that broke the backup). ping6 hostname failed, but ping succeeded. You can go to the edit connections dialog to view the password in plain text and compare it to the one entered in the failed-connection dialog. If the password stored is not the one you have entered, you have found a bug, that the entered password is not stored. You can try to change it in the edit connections dialog, if it is wrong. [Bug 1542733] Re: Connect to Hidden Wi-Fi Network, "Connect" grayed out
A tooltip in this dialog says that the connection is invalid (either password or connection) on the connect button. History: I have booted from a 16.04.1 LTS Live CD and tried to connect to WLAN in order to save some data before installing. In my case I typed a wrong password (due to wrong keybord layout). Then the network-manager asked me to enter the password again (I corrected it, but it was actually not saved despite of clicking on save -> this is a second bug?) Problem: Manually connecting to a hidden network brings up the dialog, but the dialog does not allow me to edit the password and editing in the connection view and trying again as suggested by the tooltip does not enable the connect button in this dialog. Thus I was able to view and correct the password in the connection dialog, but I am still unable to connect. even trying a "/etc/init.d/network-manager restart" at the command line didn't connect to WLAN. -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1542733 Title: Connect to Hidden Wi-Fi Network, "Connect" grayed out To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/network-manager-applet/+bug/1542733/+subscriptions -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 615239] Re: Every Wi-Fi disconnection is treated as an authentication error
We could keep a list of hardware where authentication was rejected, so that we won't keep on trying to reconnect with a wrong password. But we should keep on retrying, if the fault was a connection fault only, but not a reject due to wrong credentials. Probably in NM we should have a menu entry "Reconnect" which deletes the list of wrong password access points and tries to reconnect to the already authenticated access point. If matching access points exist and reconnecting fails for all available access points, we should get an error message with an OK button (default) and a button "enter new credentials" to get a password dialog to enter a new password. But the user should get these dialogs only when actively editing the network preferences and trying to reconnect, but not when just using the network. -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/615239 Title: Every Wi-Fi disconnection is treated as an authentication error To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/canonical-devices-system-image/+bug/615239/+subscriptions -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
[Bug 615239] Re: Every Wi-Fi disconnection is treated as an authentication error
Even it is annoying to be asked for a password when not editing the network settings. Just ignoring the failure and searching for another network is the best thing to do when an access point cannot be connected to. Probably we could have some settings where we could choose to do the following things - Pin the client to a specific host (MAC address where authentication was done with and not allowing to connect to different hardware, probably a good idea for most home networks, but will most likely not work with networks like FreeWifi) - Prefer the authenticated host when available, but do not pin the client to it. - Connect to any host with matching SSID with no preference. This setting is necessary for each authenticated SSID, so that we can configure our home network different from the FreeWifi used everywhere else. Pinning the client to an access point could improve security a bit as it prevents connecting to another (malicious?) access point with the same SSID without user's knowledge. A malicious access point could be used for man-in-the-middle attacks. But it is not impossible to clone an access point with the same MAC, but those cloned access points would then probably interfere with each other if they are near to each other. That would make a man-in-the-middle attack a bit harder.

[Bug 1615474] Re: Network Indicator / Connectivity-API is not accessible
Last weekend the telephone froze (after turning off hotspot). And I had to hard-reset it using the power button. Then the strange behaviour began: On startup, only one sim card (without pin) was working. Also I was unable to unlock the pin protected card (there was no dialog asking for the password). Even wehen trying "Unlock" from the configuration didn't do any action. The icons to start applications didn't work, but it was possible to scroll through them, only starting an application was not possible. But from the slider on the left side it was possible to start an application. Rebooting didn't solve the issue. A workaround for the pin-locked SIM card was to disable the PIN and then enable it again. That unlocked the SIM card, so that I am able to use it now. Using df via ssh didn't show a full disk, maybe the file system was corrupted during hard reboot. This seems to be the case as not only the network indicator was broken but also the application which asks for the SIM PIN and the launcher. Probably we should have a look on how configuration files are written by applications and how corrupted configuration data is handled. Broken configurations should not leave the applications in an unusable state, I would prefer that instead a user notification is sent and the configuration is reset to the last known working state or to useful defaults. -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1615474 Title: Network Indicator / Connectivity-API is not accessible To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/canonical-devices-system-image/+bug/1615474/+subscriptions -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
[Bug 1449990] Re: National Data Roaming
Current behaviour with OTA-12 is that with o2.de+ the internet is not working even when roaming is turned on. A workaround is to turn data roaming off and then on again to let the mobile phone use it. Another issue I have experienced in Luxembourg is that in the network pulldown, where all cards are listed, the card was listed (I think provider was POST) with internet ("H" was displayed), but the internet was not usable and the card was not listed with "H" in the status line above. The workaround mentioned above didn't help at all, even when used multiple times. Even a reboot didn't let me get a usable internet connection. Another provider (I think it was Tango) at another place worked well as expected. Not being able to use the services I have paid for is a serious issue for me, thus I expect Canonical to fix this with the highest possible priority. This bug is more than one year old with no real improvements. How long do I still have to wait for an improvement? Note: I do not expect a full implementation as mentioned in my earlier comments immediately, but I want to be able to use the internet hassle-free with any network - as I am paying for it - in a short term. If Canonical still does not do its job to complete a working base environment soon, I have to think about buying a new mobile phone with another OS that does its job: :-( The main choices would then be: - Windows Phone: I don't like the user interface (maybe that could change, if I get used to it?), but people report that it works and there seem to be even more useful apps available than for Ubuntu Phone. Updates are available, but market share is dropping and thus it will probably discontinued soon, either by developers or by the manufacturer. - Apple: Expensive, but good hardware, but no specials like Dual-SIM, very restrictive about installing software (You can install only from Apple Store, if you don't want to Jail-Break the device), high security (encrypted file system). Updates are available. - Android: Most developer friendly OS, biggest amount of Apps available, but there is a big security issue due to missing updates, because even when a bug has been fixed at google phones do not draw the fix directly from there, instead most phone companies have to build and roll out an update release for each device due to some garbage closed source drivers used there. This additional effort leads to phones with serious securities issues not getting fixed. I know there would be even more choices, but most apps are available only for these three choices. It seems that I have the choice between getting security updates (Apple + MS) or having a great choice of apps (Android). And last not least leaving Ubuntu Phone would't be without any pain: I like it that I can use rsync with backuppc via ssh to automatically backup the data and photos on the device when it is available in the local wlan network, without the need for an external cloud service or a special backup-app installed. -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1449990 Title: National Data Roaming To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/canonical-devices-system-image/+bug/1449990/+subscriptions -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 577114] Re: [Lenovo IdeaPad S10-3] Wireless and Bluetooth switch does not work correctly on lenovo ideapad s10-3
After long time I am happy now, because I surprisingly found a workaround that fixed this issue for me, with neither opening the case nor using/installing any proprietary software like Windows, etc. I booted with a KALI-Linux Live-CD to try to recover some lost pictures from an IPhone that got deactivated because the children entered a wrong passcode too often... Then KALI-Linux told me that the Airplane mode is on and I should use the hardware switch to turn it on. Thus I turned it off and on again, the same procedure which was useless for so long time with ubuntu. When I turned the switch on again, there was some disc activity and suddenly Wireless LAN started working again and I could connect to WLAN. After some unsuccessful tries with the IPhone :-( I was leaving KALI- Linux and booting from hard disk again, and found: Wireless LAN is still working! :-) Then I stored the nvram and compared with and old nvram image: They both have the same size and MD5sum. Thus the information if the hardware switch is on or off seems to be stored somewhere else, but not in the area used for nvram. Probably the flash memory available is bigger than the area used for nvram and the information is stored somewhere else. As KALI Linux is Open-Source, it is very likely that it is possible to find a solution for Ubuntu and to try out what turns Wireless on or off. Here is a small HOWTO howto fix the issue: (I wrote it very detailled, so that almost everybody that finds this here can use it) - Download Kali Linux: https://www.kali.org/ and download directory is http://cdimage.kali.org/kali-2016.1/ wget http://cdimage.kali.org/kali-2016.1/kali-linux-2016.1-amd64.iso wget http://cdimage.kali.org/kali-2016.1/SHA1SUMS wget http://cdimage.kali.org/kali-2016.1/SHA1SUMS.gpg - Check that your download is not corrupt and is authentic gpg --verify SHA1SUMS.gpg SHA1SUMS The output should be as follows: gpg: Unterschrift vom Mi 20 Jan 2016 21:37:00 CET mittels RSA-Schlüssel ID 7D8D0BF6 gpg: Korrekte Unterschrift von »Kali Linux Repository« gpg: WARNUNG: Dieser Schlüssel trägt keine vertrauenswürdige Signatur! gpg: Es gibt keinen Hinweis, daß die Signatur wirklich dem vorgeblichen Besitzer gehört. Haupt-Fingerabdruck = 44C6 513A 8E4F B3D3 0875 F758 ED44 4FF0 7D8D 0BF6 Now you know that the SHA1SUMS file has been signed with the key, but you still cannot trust the key. Compare the fingerprint with the one listed on https://www.kali.org/downloads/ and check the https// certificate. If you trust the https// certificate an the finger print there equals the one from gpg --verify, then you can trust the key used for the signature and the signed file. Now you need to check the file against the trusted SHA1SUM sha1sum -c SHA1SUMS The output should be as follows: kali-linux-2016.1-amd64.iso: OK ... If you didn't download all the other files mentioned in the SHA1SUM file, SHA1SUM will complain about the other files, but that can be igored. The SHA1SUM of the file should be: deaa41c5c8f26b7854cafb34b6f1b567871c4875 kali-linux-2016.1-amd64.iso Now you can be quite sure that you got an authentic copy of KALI-Linux and can write it onto a DVD: growisofs --dvd-compat -Z /dev/dvd=kali-linux-2016.1-amd64.iso Then boot your Lenovo ideapad from this CD (you need an external DVD drive for it). In the network settings dialog try to enable WLAN. If it does not get detected immediately, turn the Wireless Switch off and after some seconds on again. Now the wireless LED should be on and Wireless should work. You can then shutdown KALI Linux and boot into the installed system and Wireless should still work as it should. -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/577114 Title: [Lenovo IdeaPad S10-3] Wireless and Bluetooth switch does not work correctly on lenovo ideapad s10-3 To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/linux/+bug/577114/+subscriptions -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

Then networking restart and then network-manager restart will do it. michael@thinkpad:~$ sudo /etc/init.d/network-manager restart [sudo] password for michael: [ ok ] Restarting network-manager (via systemctl): network-manager.service. michael@thinkpad:~$ sudo /etc/init.d/network-manager restart [ ok ] Restarting network-manager (via systemctl): network-manager.service. michael@thinkpad:~$ sudo /etc/init.d/network-manager restart [ ok ] Restarting network-manager (via systemctl): network-manager.service. michael@thinkpad:~$ sudo /etc/init.d/network-manager restart [ ok ] Restarting network-manager (via systemctl): network-manager.service. michael@thinkpad:~$ sudo /etc/init.d/network-manager restart [ ok ] Restarting network-manager (via systemctl): network-manager.service. michael@thinkpad:~$ sudo /etc/init.d/network-manager restart [ ok ] Restarting network-manager (via systemctl): network-manager.service. michael@thinkpad:~$ sudo /etc/init.d/network-manager restart [ ok ] Restarting network-manager (via systemctl): network-manager.service. michael@thinkpad:~$ sudo /etc/init.d/network restart networking network-manager michael@thinkpad:~$ sudo /etc/init.d/networking restart [ ok ] Restarting networking (via systemctl): networking.service. michael@thinkpad:~$ sudo /etc/init.d/network-manager restart [ ok ] Restarting network-manager (via systemctl): network-manager.service. michael@thinkpad:~$ Thus it seems that sometimes on a failed connect something gets broken so that it prevents you from getting a connection and that can be repaired by doing a networking restart. I hope that this is useful to find the cause of this bug. -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1316634 Title: Does not automatically reconnect to hidden WiFi network To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/network-manager/+bug/1316634/+subscriptions -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
[Bug 1421923] Re: No notifications for new mails
With version 0.6.11 (Download: see bug 1501912 ), dekko sometimes seems to receive an incoming email automatically, sometimes it needs manual refresh. [Bug 1537824] Re: firefox opens two windows on every second start with error on console: "Error loadCiphersTab rows is null"
Thank you for the update. Good to know that this bug cannot be exploited. Now with firefox 44, the bug behaviour has worsened, now firefox opens two windows or tabs, closes them and then opens a new window with an empty tab. When firefox is started with a link, the link may be opened the first time, then closed as above and a new empty window is opened, thus as a result the link is not shown. [Bug 1316634] Re: Does not automatically reconnect to hidden WiFi network
Today I tried this: michael@thinkpad:~$ sudo /etc/init.d/network-manager restart [sudo] password for michael: [ ok ] Restarting network-manager (via systemctl): network-manager.service. michael@thinkpad:~$ sudo /etc/init.d/network-manager restart [ ok ] Restarting network-manager (via systemctl): network-manager.service. michael@thinkpad:~$ sudo /etc/init.d/networking restart [ ok ] Restarting networking (via systemctl): networking.service. michael@thinkpad:~$ sudo /etc/init.d/network-manager restart [ ok ] Restarting network-manager (via systemctl): network-manager.service. michael@thinkpad:~$ Restarting network-manager alone multiple times didn't lead to a wireless connection, but after networking restart and then network- manager restart the connect succeeded immediately. Probably this gives a hint where to search for the issue. To be sure, further tests are necessary, to be sure that this behaviour is reproducable. [Bug 1363214] Re: [System Settings] [design] allow Passcodes of variable length instead of just 4 digits
I would suggest the following solution: --- Enter Device PIN (1) (2) (3) (4) (5) (6) (7) (8) (9) (0) (X) (<) (/) --- The numbers could be grey or blue. The (X) button is red and locks the screen. The (<) button is yellow deletes the last cipher of the entered PIN The (/) is green and acts as Enter button. Note: the "/" here should of course really be a tick character. Give the user the choice (Settings) how to input the PIN: Mode 1) The current behaviour (No enter required), but you can guess the length of the PIN just by typing arbitrary numbers. Mode 2) Entering the correct PIN matches and auto-enters, but the wrong pin won't tell you there is no match possible by entering more characters. Only pressing (/) will tell you that the PIN is wrong. Assuming the pin is 12345 Entering 23456 does not match and you can enter any amount of more ciphers. Pressing (/) will tell you that the PIN is wrong. You can delete characters with (<). Entering 12345 matches and immediately unlocks the screen. Mode 3) Entering the correct PIN does not auto-enter, you have to press (/) always to let the dialog check if the entered PIN is correct. -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1363214 Title: [System Settings] [design] allow Passcodes of variable length instead of just 4 digits To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu-ux/+bug/1363214/+subscriptions -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

In the PIN PAD example above the (0) should be centered in the row as it is already now in the lock screen. I have just entered too many leading spaces there. [Bug 1499342] Re: National Roaming not working
As I remember, my O2 card and my Simquadrat card in the past didn't do the automatic roaming, because the network was marked as illegal. After manually choosing the network with my android mobile, the settings in the SIM card were updated and automatic roaming for the partner network (E-Plus for O2 and vice versa) enabled (the network was not illegal anymore). Also I have noticed that the networks changed their names: The O2 card now recognizes the e-Plus network as o2.de+ The Simquadrat card (used E-Plus network) now recognises O2 as sipgate+. For those, who don't know: Simquadrat is a brand of the german provider sipgate and can be purchased via http://smqdr.at/9r2G66sa if you live in Germany. They are a virtual network provider, thus they do not own their own network, but use the network of e-plus and now also O2 via national roaming. For internet they have also special APN settings, thus with the standard e-plus or O2 settings, you will not be able to use the internet and you have to add the APN manually. [Bug 1316634] Re: Does not automatically reconnect to hidden WiFi network
Unfortuately I have to admit that my patch did not really solve th issue. While yesterday the problem did not reappear, today I was experiencing the problem again. Before I was thinking, that the problem appeared everytime when the network was connected before and thus when not manually connecting on every second boot, but this might not be true, because yesterday I thought the issue was fixed, because the issue didn't appear after a reboot even when the network was connected before. I was thinking, there was something like a state that survives a reboot and could be cleared with the patched script. It might be that the patched script somehow changes some probabilities, but the issue is definitely not fixed.
[Bug 1316634] Re: Does not automatically reconnect to hidden WiFi network
When the issue occurs, the network manager tells me that there are wireless networks available, but it does not connect automatically to the hidden network. Probably there is some state that is stored in NetworkManager: * When you have manually disconnected from a wireless network, you probably don't want to reconnect automatically. * When you was connected to a wireless network, you probably want to reconnect to that network. * When you have manually chosen a specific network, you might want to connect only to that network There should be something like on mobile phones where you can choose one network manually or let the phone choose the network automatically. [Bug 1434848] Re: firefox crashes at some websites
This behaviour (Unresponsive application) is called hang or freeze. A crash would mean, that the process suddenly dies and as a result the application windows just disappear. Probably the hang issue might be caused by some plugins (e.g. Adobe Flash). [Bug 1456326] [NEW] XServer eats up 100% cpu and is very slow on specific tasks with xfce desktop
Public bug reported: I am using xfce desktop. Issue: When I want to log out, after clicking on the log-out button from the start menu (that one which looks like the power button on a tv-remote), nothing happens for several seconds before the window to confirm the logout/lock screen/shutdown appears and the X process is eating up 100% CPU during that time. The same issue I have experienced when I took the screenshot: After pressing the key combination to take a screenshot, I had to wait several seconds before the screenshot has been presented. During the waiting period, 100% CPU was used. Even some other things seem to react somehow sluggishly while others are working as expected. But when logging out, it is always annoying to wait so long for the window to choose to log out/lock the screen/shutdown. Expected behaviour: * The logout window is displayed immediately (as before). * The Screenshot is displayed immediately after taking it. [Bug 1449990] Re: National Data Roaming on the bq Aquaris E4.5
We have three cases here which should be handled in a different way: When you are registered in a network with the same MCC and MNC code, this is your network. Your local tarif will apply. If you are registered in a network with the same MCC and a different MNC code, this is national roaming. This is the case when national roaming between e-plus (sometimes displayed as o2.de+) and o2.de applies. In Germany national roaming does not imply extra costs, but in other countries the agreements between the companies could provide extra charges when national roaming is used. In Germany o2 and e-plus allow roaming only for the 3G network, not for 2G network. Even when the card thinks it may access the 2G network of the other company, it is refused. If you are registered in a network with different MCC code, this is international roaming, regardless the MNC code. Within the European Union the extra costs for roaming are limited by law, but when roaming in a non-EU network with a EU sim card (which can happen near the European border), roaming costs are not limited by law and can be quite expensive. Thus it would be desirable to have something like a combination of Blacklist and Whitelist and priorities for networks for each sim card. For example in the tri-border area between Germany, Austria and Switzerland you might have the following scenarios: With an O2-Card: 1) o2.de is the card's home network 2) e-plus (o2.de+) is the national roaming network which could be preferred like the home network as there are no extra costs and the same functionality. 3) Any network from Austria is an international roaming network, but the EU tariff applies which limits the costs. When 1 or 2 are not available, this is the best choice 4) Any network from Switzerland is an international roaming network, roaming is more expensive than in the EU and should be avoided when possible. Should be chosen only when 1 - 3 are not available. (I admit that this is not correct for O2 anymore as they count Switzerland as if it was a member of the EU, but for other German card providers, Swiss roaming can be really expensive) Instead of just allowing or blocking roaming, I would suggest a versatile configuration functionality to choose the network in a more configurable way with automatic network search: A card preference for general roaming setting: * Allow any network (international Roaming) with that card * Allow only national roaming with that card * Limit to home network (Roaming disabled for that card) A card preference for data usage (With the valid values as above) to specify when data may be used. A card preference rule setting for a specific network could specify * HOME: Prefer like card's home network - No attempt is made to search for the home network, as long as this network is available. When both, this network and the home network are available, the stronger one is chosen. * (+n) Preferred when home network is not available. Chosen when the home network or an equal network is not available. When multiple networks with this priority are available, the stronger one is used. * (0) Default (not set): When no preferred network is available, this is chosen. * (-n) Avoid: Chosen only when no Preferred or Default network is available * FORBIDDEN: Never ever try to logon to this network. This setting is useful to avoid expensive networks, but it might also be useful to avoid wasting battery power for unsuccessful logons. n stands for a number specifying the priority: The higher n is, the more the network is preferred (+n) or avoided (-n). n=0 is the default for a network when no rule applies. A card preference rule could specify as condition * The MCC (country) - required * The MNC (network within the country) - optional * The network type (2G, 3G, 4G) - optional When an optional parameter is omitted, all will match A network preference setting of that O2 card example could be: 262/Germany, 03 (e-plus), null : HOME 228/Schweiz, null, null: (Prio: -2) There could also be a setting that allows that the mobile phone chooses a lower priority network when the signal strength justifies it. The preference could be named: Priority points für network strength. So a strong network with prio -1 might be chosen when a weak network with +1 is available, but an even stronger network with prio -124 would not be chosen. This settings might be important for business men which prefer to be reachable more than to have always the cheapest net while for example on vacation the cheapest network is more important than being always reachable. It is important that these settings are stored per card, as in a Dual- SIM telephone, you might have one SIM card for business and one for your free time, so that the two SIM cards require different settings. -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1449990 Title: National Data

[Bug 1375640] Re: fsck should do some sanity checks to avoid damaging an ext3/ext4 file system
Thank you for the information. I was thinking, that I have destroyed the extents and other features of the ext4 file system by using a tool that is not aware of the special ext4 features, leading to filesystem coruption. What happens, if I hit CTRL-C during fsck? Can that leave the filesystem in a even more inconsistent state? I used a SSD, so it is likely that resetting the system could have damaged the file system. Probably it is a good idea to keep the /home directory on a separate partition. This is how I used to do; when there was file system corruption in the past (mostly dying disks), the root filesystem got broken, but the home partition only had none or minor issues, so recovery was always easy. But it is not the default when installing ubuntu and for this installation I didn't care for it. Also the nvidia driver could have caused the damage by overwriting memory which finally led to the crash. But if that was nvidia driver's memory corruption, it is likely that it could also also hit a separate home partition or any other mounted drive. Is there a way to recover the file system manually? There is still hope that the areas with data are mostly still present. I still keep a copy of the disk image and I am still trying some recovery tools on a copy of that image. fsck.ext4 resulted in that some data still exists, some files have gone to lost+found , but many files seem to be lost (the partition now appears to be mostly unused). It seems that much space has been unallocated and as a result some files could have been partially overwritten during system boot, when the system writes to the disk. As far as I know, fsck.ext4 does not scan the whole disk for files to be linked to lost+found, but only these areas that have been marked as used to improve speed. Is it possible to force searching the whole disk image for existing fragments of the file system that are not allocated as used and do not have any linkage to the existing filesytem any more? I know that this could deliver much garbage (very old files) that have been deleted or overwritten far before and are not of use, but probably it could be useful to recover some useful data where the linkage to the file system has been lost and that have been unallocated by filesystem coruption. Could you provide me a link to current documentation of ext4 and fsck? Where can I get the sources? Can you recommend some good open source recovery tools? -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1375640 Title: fsck should do some sanity checks to avoid damaging an ext3/ext4 file system To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/e2fsprogs/+bug/1375640/+subscriptions -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 1375640] [NEW] fsck should do some sanity checks to avoid damaging an ext3/ext4 file system
Public bug reported: After some crashes due to a broken nvidia driver, the system didn't boot and presented me a shell to manually repair the file system. Then I didn't think and typed fsck without the -t ext4 parameter and the program asked me many questions, if I want to fix something which I answered with y. After some time I remembered, that I forgot to specify the -t ext4 parameter, but the filesystem was broken already, so it was already too late, when I do Ctrl-C. And I didn't think about that there could be already severe file system corruption, making the things even worse. Thus I would recommend that a warning message is displayed, when calling fsck manually with the wrong filesystem type. Also a big note that this is now the right time to make an image backup of the disk could be helpful for people like me that always tell other people how important backups are before working on something, but sometimes fail to make one, because they forget to turn their brain on before starting work. ;-) I would expect that when calling fsck on a filesystem, not just defaults are used, but the filesystem type is determined. Then a big scary warning message should say something like this: You have called fsck on an ext4 filesystem. For an ext4 file system you *must* specify the filesystem type with option -t ext4, otherwise severe damage to the file system will occur. NOTE: It is highly recommended that you make a backup image of your disk device before you continue, so that you have something to recover from, if things go wrong. This can be especially important, if the disk drive hardware you are trying to recover the filesystem on, is possibly dying. You can use dd_rescue or similar tools to try to get a disk image to recover as much as possible of your data from a damaged hard drive. Are you really sure, you want to continue (and probably damage the file system)?
