[Bug 1898614] Re: ubuntu server installer serial console not preserved after update

2020-11-12 Thread Michael Richardson
Hi. I got KVM+serial console to work this time. (I think that by default, kvm
doesn't give the installer enough ram). Going through my proceedure, I allow
the installer to upgrade, and it does in fact continue on the serial console.
It also continues on the tty0, so perhaps I was confused by this.
Sorry for the false report.

[Bug 1898614] Re: ubuntu server installer serial console not preserved after update

2020-11-12 Thread Michael Richardson
Hi, the USB key in question wandered around a bit, but I have it back now.
I am grepping the logs to locate the attempt to upgrade/update the installer.
What should I be looking for?

[Bug 1898614] Re: ubuntu server installer serial console not preserved after update

2020-10-20 Thread Michael Richardson
I may have grabbed the wrong log file, I will search the USB key again.

I also tried to get the process I followed (F6/ESC/type console=ttyS0)
to work on KVM, but I couldn't get the serial port to work at all. I
have gotten serial consoles to work with KVM in the past, even without
-kernel/-initrd.

[Bug 1898614] Re: ubuntu server installer serial console not preserved after update

2020-10-09 Thread Michael Richardson
This is the time that I tried it.
After this, I just didn't accept the upgrade.
The machine is installed.
I got the console= option on the grub menu by hitting F6, then ESC, and then
typing in what I wanted. That used to just involve TAB.
I can't easily edit the grub menus on the USB key, since it is an ISO9660 image
really.
Given how difficult it is to do this I'm not surprised this option hasn't been
tested.

(I would like to always install VMs with kvm -nographic, but all the stuff
makes this so hard.
But my physical servers always get a serial console)

(Note that I ran into some issues with bad HDs, which I eventually
solved by using older ones)

[Bug 1898614] [NEW] ubuntu core 20 installer serial console not preserved after update

2020-10-05 Thread Michael Richardson
Public bug reported:

I booted ubuntu-core 20 from a USB key to install a server.
(It would be great if that was a regular option, and if grub could be more
easily tuned to include console ttyS1)
Ubuntu nicely discovered that I had booted from serial console, and I opted to
stay with the non-rich mode, since I was using an xterm and serial console
(SOL) via IPMI.
I agreed to update my installer. Then I lost everything.
It seems that the installer was then running on the tty0.

Just got setup with the new Windows 10 Linux subsystem bash environment

this bug still an issue?

[Bug 1403152] Re: unregister_netdevice: waiting for lo to become free. Usage count

2016-06-06 Thread Michael Richardson
Credit where credit is due: we've slowly rolled the patch above (per
#63) into production over the last six months, initially through custom
compiled kernels and more recently via mainline LTS wily packages; and
have seen no further issues with hung namespaces. Kudos to ddstreet.

[Bug 1244714] Re: pppd on new Precise HWE kernels fails, but works on 3.2

2013-10-25 Thread Michael Richardson
I rebuilt the ppp 2.4.5 ubuntu1 package from source, same result.
I grabbed the ubuntu2 (quantal) patches and applied them, thinking that this is
a kernel interface issue, that got the same result.
I then cp'ed if_pppol2tp.h from /lib/modules/.../build into the
ppp/include/linux dir, noting that it brought it's own copy
of that file, and rebuilt, and there was no change.

I wonder if it is a 64-bit issue. Under all of the l2tp deamons, it's a
bit hard to get a core dump, but that's my next step.

[Bug 1244714] Re: pppd on new Precise HWE kernels fails, but works on 3.2

2013-10-25 Thread Michael Richardson
I got a core dump, and determined that somehow this isn't about the kernel, but
clearly something about the newer kernel
triggers a bug.
In pppd/utils.c, the vslprintf() trips up for a few reasons.
One is that pppd/options.c, print_option() seems to use printer()
with the wrong number of arguments. I protected the dereference
of the char **, but that wasn't it, the result was also still NULL.

-   if ((opt-flags  OPT_STATIC) == 0)
-   p = *(char **)p;
-   printer(%q, p);
+   if ((opt-flags  OPT_STATIC) == 0) {
+   if(p != NULL) {
+   p = *(char **)p;
+   } else {
+   p = NULL;
+   }
+   }
+   printer(arg, %q, p);

so I protected the %q against dereference of null:

@@ -309,6 +310,12 @@ vslprintf(buf, buflen, fmt, args)
case 'q':   /* quoted string */
quoted = c == 'q';
p = va_arg(args, unsigned char *);
+if(p==NULL) {
+   OUTCHAR('');
+   OUTCHAR('0');
+   OUTCHAR('');
+   continue;
+   }
if (fillch == '0'  prec = 0) {
n = prec;
} else {

The debug options were actually what made this fail, as it was about to
print something about the pppol2tp plugin:

when it wants me to login, it now asks me to redirect to:

Upgrade Required

You must access this page using the URL
https://[v1.2XXX::f:2::231]:631/printers/HP_LaserJet_1300.

This is not, as far as I know, a valid IPv6, with the v1. in front of it.
If I remove it, I get a certificate warning, but it appears that I'm unable to
program an exception with firefox.

[Bug 567955] Re: grub2 always adds memtest86 serial console even when no serial port

2011-10-19 Thread Michael Richardson
Actually, you likely do have hardware for the serial ports. It's part of the
legacy ISA stuff in your north bridge.
Just your laptop does not have the pins hooked up to a DB9. My laptop's
docking station exposes those.

What I think is that memtest86 should look for console= in the kernel config
file, and not add the serial console unless
kernel has one.

[Bug 523340] Re: usbmon broken

2010-11-15 Thread Michael Richardson
I looked at the complexity and time required to produce a 1.0.1 with the
correct fix, and it simply wasn't
within the tcpdump.org's ability to do.
We are in fact, overdue for a new regular release, which is late, so a 1.0.1
will not occur.

[Bug 213669] Re: [Hardy] Caps Lock causes keys to repeat

2009-10-21 Thread Michael Richardson
My experience (with CAPS-LOCK as an additional CTRL key) is that the CTRL key
stays down.
xkbwatch confirms this. A vt control switch (CTRL+ALT + F4) and then back to X
(ALT+F7) solves my problem.
But, it's very annoying.
I too, experience this in Xemacs mostly, where I hold the CTRL (labelled
CAPSLOCK) down for long periods of time.

Re: [Bug 208009] Re: Kmail configuration changes not applied until application restarted

2008-09-24 Thread Michael Richardson

After checking just now, I can confirm that the bug appears to have been fixed
in Hardy. I have only tried the KDE3 version of kmail, unfortunately.

Kind regards,

Michael.

 Agreed, that doesn't sound like intended behaviour. It's certainly
 inconsistent with other config dialogs if it is. Does this bug still affect
 you under hardy?
 Is it only the KDE3 version of Kmail or does it also occur under KDE4?

 Status in “kdepim” source package in Ubuntu: Incomplete

 Bug description:
 Binary package hint: kmail

 Changes made to accounts within Kmail's configuration panel (Settings -
 Configure Kmail - Accounts) don't take affect until Kmail is restarted,
 regardless of whether Apply or Apply, OK are clicked.

 I believe that Apply should actually apply the changes made (and leave
 the config panel open), while OK should apply the changes, and close the
 config panel. Kmail shouldn't need to be restarted.  Package/release
 details as follows:

 $ lsb_release -rd
         Description:    Ubuntu 7.10
         Release:        7.10

 $ apt-cache policy kmail | grep Installed
         Installed: 4:3.5.7enterprise20070926-0ubuntu2

 Cheers,
 Michael
