[Bug 817147] [NEW] Boot hang on natty with Samsung SH-S223C DVD-RW Drive
Public bug reported: Since installing a Samsung/TSSTCorp SH-S223C SATA DVD-RW drive, my natty/11.04 installation usually hangs during booting. Unfortunately no dmesg log gets written to disk in this case. It doesn't always hang in the same place, but usually it is soon after: Begin: Running /scripts/init-bottom ... done. (Of course one has to fiddle with the boot parameters in GRUB to actually see any output at all, as for some reason recent Ubuntus like to show a blank screen for most of the boot process.) Ubuntu lucid/10.04 boots without any problems. With a bit of Googling I found the following workaround: Add libata.atapi_passthru16=0 to the kernel boot parameters in GRUB. [Bug 477565] [NEW] Log Viewer: Log window jumps to bottom on new messages
Public bug reported: Binary package hint: gnome-utils See also: Bug #346558 When viewing a log file in the log file viewer, the display jumps to the bottom of the log when new messages are written to the log. This is desired behaviour if the display is at the bottom of the file already, however if I am trying to read part of the middle of the log file I do not want it to jump to the end. The viewer should only scroll to the bottom if the scrollbar was already at the bottom before the new message appeared. [Bug 437234] [NEW] MSI S271 laptop hangs on reboot (karmic)
Public bug reported: I installed karmic alpha6 plus all updates to 26th Sept. When I reboot (by clicking Restart in the top-right menu or from the login screen), I get the splash screen briefly then the screen goes black and nothing further happens. At this point the system doesn't respond to any key presses, so my only option is to power off by holding down the power button (which causes the hard drive to make a rather unpleasant click sound). Shutting down works fine. I have no problems rebooting in any previous Ubuntu installs (including jaunty which I am currently running), although I have sometimes had the same/a similar problem with the livecd versions. [Bug 226878] Re: [MASTER] Firefox freezes often
I am experiencing what appears to be this bug with 3.0.11+build2 +nobinonly-0ubuntu0.9.04.1 on jaunty. Often (not always) when opening links, switching tabs or scrolling Firefox locks up and uses 100% of one core for several seconds. This may be exacerbated by me having approximately 50 tabs open at the moment. [Bug 280188] Re: libgtkada2-bin : trying to overwrite `/usr/bin/gdialog', which is also in package zenity
Having a conflict resolves the packaging error, but it doesn't make libgtkada2 usable since zenity is a dependency of several core Ubuntu packages, e.g. ubuntu-desktop, metacity. Therefore I think it is more reasonable to resolve this by removing the gdialog symlink from the libgtkada2 package as per the debdiff attached above. As far as I am aware there are no other packages that depend on the existence of libgtkada2's gdialog, so this should not cause any breakage. -- libgtkada2-bin : trying to overwrite `/usr/bin/gdialog', which is also in package zenity https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/280188 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

The attached debdiff is against the latest debian packge, 2.12.0-3. Debian have 'fixed' this by making zenity and libgtkada2-bin conflict; however this means that libgtkada2-bin cannot be installed without removing zenity, which is needed by several packages that are part of the normal Ubuntu install. I'm not sure what the differences are between the zenity gdialog and the libgtkada gdialog, but assuming they are equivalent, perhaps gdialog could be removed from libgtkada and a dependency on zenity added instead? -- libgtkada2-bin : trying to overwrite `/usr/bin/gdialog', which is also in package zenity https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/280188 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
[Bug 14335] Re: nautilus wants to execute all text files on a vfat flash drive
In the CD-ROM case (bug #353548), the workaround/fix for this is to add mode=0444 to the following gconf key: /system/storage/default_options/iso9660/mount_options This results in all files on CD-ROMs being mounted without the executable flag set, unless the CD-ROM has Rock-Ridge extensions that specify the permissions. Note that this will not prevent explicitly executing scripts on the disc via an interpreter. In my opinion, this setting and the similar ones for vfat/ntfs mentioned above should be the default. [Bug 218094] Re: Wrong battery information
Of course the problem is not directly caused by the aforementioned patch, but by the msi-laptop module, which now gets autoloaded because of that patch, where before it was not loaded at all. A workaround that is working for me (so far) is to add msi-laptop to /etc/modprobe.d/blacklist, which will prevent the msi-laptop module being autoloaded. I don't know why the msi-laptop driver would have this effect however as it mainly seems to be concerned with the state of the wlan/bluetooth switch and screen brightness. ** Summary changed: - Wrong battery information + Wrong battery information on MSI S271 laptop with msi-laptop module loaded -- Wrong battery information on MSI S271 laptop with msi-laptop module loaded https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/218094 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 14335] Re: nautilus wants to execute all text files on a vfat flash drive
It would only affect files on external drives, not fixed partitions that are mounted via fstab. I wouldn't have thought that many normal users would want to be executing files from external drives -- and if someone did want to run a script on an external drive they could just use sh /media/disk/whatever, or manually override the mount options for that drive in its properties window. Either way, the current behaviour -- whereby opening any text file (in Nautilus) that is on or was copied from a vfat/ntfs drive displays a confusing message -- is not very helpful to new/non-technical users. Also, if the user has chosen to always run executable text files in the file management preferences, then they could potentially inadvertently execute a malicious script located on a portable flash drive for example. -- nautilus wants to execute all text files on a vfat flash drive https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/14335 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is a direct subscriber. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
[Bug 161859] Re: Default options for vfat automount set +x
*** This bug is a duplicate of bug 78505 *** https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/78505 It is a similar issue, however this bug is concerning hot-plugged hard drives (USB) that are automatically mounted when they are plugged in - and hence are not listed in /etc/fstab. The mount options for hot- plugged drives are controlled by the gconf key mentioned in the description. To be honest I am not sure what package this belongs to. -- Default options for vfat automount set +x https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/161859 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 14335] Re: nautilus wants to execute all text files on a vfat flash drive
(copied from https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+bug/161859): [In gconf] /system/storage/default_options/vfat/mount_options on a clean install of gutsy/feisty has umask=0077, which makes all files +x. This means that files copied from a usb fat drive to the local drive will have the +x bit set, so Nautilus will always prompt for Run/Open. Instead, mount_options should include fmask=0177 and dmask=0077 so that files are not +x. This was the case in gutsy, I haven't tried hardy yet. -- nautilus wants to execute all text files on a vfat flash drive https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/14335 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is a direct subscriber. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
[Bug 173890] Re: flashplugin-nonfree fails to install... new version?
(I couldn't understand Mekaniserad Apelsin's post so some of my post may just be repeating what he said.) I received this update automatically via update manager. Because the previous tar.gz was still in /var/cache/flashplugin-nonfree, the package did not attempt to download the new version, and of course it failed the md5sum check. I had to manually remove the old tar.gz and run aptitude reinstall to get it installed properly. 1) The package needs to remove the older tar.gz and then download the new one before checking its md5. Possibly the package could include md5sums for all previous versions of the package so that it knows that the tar.gz is a previous version (or the files could be renamed to include version info). 2) The package should fail to install if the md5sums do not match, instead of the package installing successfully without actually installing the plugin. -- flashplugin-nonfree fails to install... new version? https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/173890 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is the bug contact for Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
