[Bug 1773457] Re: Full-system encryption needs to be supported out-of-the-box including /boot and should not delete other installed systems

2018-08-03 Thread Milan Niznansky
@Phillip

I believe that in the heat of the argument the key point was lost.

In the enterprise world, the "desktop" method of "lets assume we can
wipe all user data" and "lets assume this is a single-disk use case"
simply do not add up.

For me, the current model is simply unusable for 2 fundamental reasons:
A) As a corporate policy /precedes GDPR, but I presume it is not unique/ the
only partition except from mandatory encryption is the EFI partition. This is
not up for discussion. There is NO WAY you will even be able to win this
argument with the InfoSec Crowd. Because they are right. You need to assume
*not only* scenarios of external attacker but also the user himself mis-using
the /boot partition to exchange confidential data. And please do not go with
the "then you are already compromised so you lost anyway" argument. The point
is is defense-in-depth. With trusted boot you can actually ignore the EFI-the
system will refuse to boot if the EFI is messed with. Etc.

B) And this is even more critical, I have a powerfull workstation with
several SSDs used as Virtualization host for a bunch of VMs under VMware
workstation. I NEED to use custom partitioning to be able to create a
custom LUKS volume and pass that volume directly to VMs to do their
stuff - while staying fully encrypted on the HW level.

In summary, for "Kid's computer", the current approach is fine. No
question there. Bu then, for a Kid's computer, Win10 is fine too so is a
Mac ...

What this bug report is about is how to address PROFESSIONAL / ADVANCED use
cases seemlessly.
Right now, the solution prepared by Paddy is absolutely fine - and it is even
fine if it is NOT included in Uniquity.
But we should get the Grub bug fixed - bar the need for the "RefreshGrub"
script, I found Paddy's solution infitintely more practical than being forced
to use Red Hat (which supports a custom configuration just fine) or a Mac for
that matter.

I am marking this against Grub too - as maybe first step is to fix the Grub bug
and once that is done, consider extenting this to Ubiquity for the next LTS
cycle.

[Bug 752694] Re: Grub2 installs on the wrong device if in a RAID config

2011-09-07 Thread Milan Niznansky
Tried to change to D-I since thi is clearly upstream issue, LP accepted
save, did nothing and removed my text. Screw it.

Just tio let you know Squeeze 6.0.21 has identical behavior - D-I just
overwrites first disk present not even telling the user it intends to
brick the box.

Happen to me on 6-disk devel box with D-I basically aliminatin hyper-v
boot loader ...

Really nice. So now eve to install debian-based stuff one has to go onsite and
physically remove all drives except the one to be used.

One has to love such feature parity with Windows ...

[Bug 441835] Re: Clicking on floppy gives no device media found

2010-12-26 Thread Milan Niznansky
@janusz
Forget reprieve or you get old waiting ...

As it stands there are perfectly workable 2 solutions and 1 workaround:
1) Ubuntu solution:
 - Do not use floppies. Flash BIOS (etc.) with your super-natural brain powers!
2) Sane person solution:
 - Do not use Ubuntu.
3) Workaround (that is sure to get broken as time goes):
 - downgrade udisks to version 1.0.1-1build1
 - make sure to lock it in Synaptic (menu-Package-Lock Version)

See? Two easy solutions, so no real issue after all! Should definitely
get 'Invalid'!

[Bug 441835] Re: Clicking on floppy gives no device media found

2010-11-25 Thread Milan Niznansky
Guys I do NOT care what you at UBUNTU are smoking but it must be good.

After reading good part of this, it is clear to me that Floppy support
is BROKEN BY PURPOSE per #271.

It is unacceptable that when one runs STUPIDLY BASIC CALL like mount
/dev/fd0 /dir this call _silently_ fails and Devs consider it well
worth the desktop loading speedup.

Had enough of this not-usable-by-design. Upgrading to Debian A.S.A.P.

Sorry for the rant but this was a last straw. This culture of
not-newest-thing-is-not-worth-our-time makes me sad.
It is precisely what will break Ubuntu's bone and keep Windows at the top.

@Daniel T Chen
There seem to be many different people affected by this bug. As the original
report WITH A WORKAROUND is bug 218906.

Wouldn't it be better to concentrate everything inside the 3yrs old _original_
bug 218906 ?
To concentrate the troubleshooting resolution in one place.

I would suggest to move it from alsa-driver to alsa-base then
rename to better match broader affected group.

Your take ?

Yes, I am aware that you can record from CD-ROM digitally.
However, this bug is about the inability to use CD/AUX analog input on some
boards.

There are many devices which rely on that functionality - in my case
that is a TV/capture card.

I confirm JoePub's workaround on Lucid with alsa-driver 1.0.22.1+dfsg-
0ubuntu3.

Output from 'arecord -l' and 'amixer' available from my bug at
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/alsa-driver/+bug/620891/+attachment/1502487/+files/noCDinput1.txt

Bug seems to be specific to ALC889A (and probably only this board
series). Will try on Maverick when time allows.

The workaround seems to be a proper solution for such a specific issue.
Would it be possible to upgrade it to a solution and include it (as commented
text) in future releases ?
