Re: [Bug 1397178] Re: kubuntu 14.10 plasma 5 spins up PowerMizer
I tried two nights ago to install the alpha 2 but was unable to do it. When I tried, ubiqity was starting the bouncing cursor and then stopping. When I did the command from the shell, I found that it was failing to delete a file called polkit-inhibit (sorry, forgot the directory for the moment). I haven't had a chance to file a bug, will do in the next day or so. I will try in the next week or so with this build. - Mitch Golden On Thu, 26 Feb 2015, Christopher M. If so, could you please test for this with the latest development release of Ubuntu? ISO images are available from http://cdimage.ubuntu.com/daily-live/current/ . [Bug 1397172] [NEW] kubuntu 14.10 plasma 5 iso doesn't start X
Public bug reported: This is easy to reproduce: Burn a kubuntu 14.10 plasma 5 ISO, downloaded from here: http://www.kubuntu.org/news/kubuntu-14.10 Boot from it. X will not start, and the machine falls to a command prompt. Typing startx starts everything and it's possible to proceed. [Bug 1397178] [NEW] kubuntu 14.10 plasma 5 spins up PowerMizer
Public bug reported: I have installed 14.10 Plasma 5 on my laptop, which is a vintage 2011 System 76. Of greatest significance is that it has an nvidia 560M graphics card in it. When I first installed 14.04, I noticed that the PowerMizer report of the NVIDIA X Server Settings would report that the graphics chip's clock was more or less constantly spun up to its highest clock rate. Heat and power use were very high, and I constantly heard the fan running. I found there were two ways to fix this: (1) Add a file called 05-nvidia.conf to /usr/share/X11/xorg.conf.d containing the lines: Section Device Identifier Device0 Driver nvidia VendorName NVIDIA Corporation Option RegistryDwords PowerMizerEnable=0x1; PerfLevelSrc=0x; PowerMizerDefault=0x3; PowerMizerDefaultAC=0x3 EndSection This pegged the graphics card at its lowest possible clock rate, which was adequate for most things but sometimes led to bad playback on some videos. See: https://forums.opensuse.org/showthread.php/410089-nvidia- powermizer-how-tweak (2) Revert to the 304 driver. This still spun up to high clock rates a bit more often than it seemed to need to, but was fairly reasonable otherwise. I expected that this would soon be rectified, since I saw that version 337.25 of the driver allegedly fixed some issue with performance in KDE: http://www.nvidia.com/download/driverResults.aspx/76278/en-us Jump ahead to yesterday when I installed 14.10 plasma 5 - I noticed that even with the 304 driver the PowerMizer reported the clock at its highest rate. With nothing moving on the screen at all and my not touching the mouse, it was pegged. I found that even installing the xorg-edgers driver (340 I believe) had no effect. Furthermore, 340 did not respond to the xorg.conf settings file above. The only way I can get plasma 5 to run reasonably on this machine is to revert to 304 and *also* put the settings file in. This is of course not optimal. Is there some way to determine what exactly is happening that causes the graphics clock to spin up so high? Nothing much is happening. Just scrolling a window in firefox is sufficient to start it. [Bug 1394856] Re: Nvidia GPU installer misconfiguration Plasma 5
This is what I wrote on the kubuntu-devel list in response. --- My concern is that this bug is sort of a worst-case scenario, as far as responsability goes. The bug by itself is quite serious - but it's not clear who fixes it. It isn't probably a kubuntu packaging issue. It may be a plasma 5 kde (upstream) issue. It is I guess even more likely to be a combination of plasma 5 and nvidia driver issue - in which case I don't know where to report it because that driver is proprietary. The installer actually supplies the open-source nouveau driver. There is no control panel that reports the clock speed under nouveau. From the sound of the fan I am guessing that nouveau is also running the clock at a high rate a lot of the time. At the very least all of this should be looked into by someone who knows more about it than it - preferably before the decision to make Kubuntu 15.04 be plasma 5 is permanently taken. -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1394856 Title: Nvidia GPU installer misconfiguration Plasma 5 To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/ubiquity/+bug/1394856/+subscriptions -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 328919] [NEW] kde3 apps can't find kfmclient
Public bug reported: Binary package hint: kdebase This bug is closely related to two already filed. One is https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/amarok/+bug/120006 which is the specific problem of being unable to open konqueror from amarok in Intrepid. The other is https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/kdelibs/+bug/310135 which is the same sort of bug, but for khelpcenter. The overall problem is that because there are two different directories /usr/share/applications/kde and /usr/share/applications/kde4, there are also two sycoca files. Therefore, since kfmclient is only built in kde4 and the associated .desktop files are only in the kde4 directory, no kde3 apps can find it. Since there are likely to be at least some kde3 apps in some form for at least a while yet, this problem should be rectified in general. It will go away in Amarok once that is ported to kde4, so it is not appropriate to file this bug under Amarok. In other words: In Intrepid, Open a KDE3 app (such as digiKam or Amarok) On the menu bar, select Help, then About digiKam In the popup, click on the URL http://www.digikam.org What should happen: Konqueror should open the URL What does happen: An error, Unable to find service 'kfmclient' The solution is to create a symlink from /usr/share/applications/kde/kfmclient.desktop to /usr/share/applications/kde4/kfmclient.desktop (and _dir _html _war as well). I have created a patch for kde4libs and kdebase that will create these, and create a symbol for anyone building kde4 apps who wants to put symlinks in for other applications as well. (This may be useful for khelpcenter, in bug 310135, though it appears that issue was solved a different way.) ** Affects: kdebase (Ubuntu) Importance: Undecided Status: New -- kde3 apps can't find kfmclient https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/328919 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 281808] Re: Flashplugin not working in Konqueror (8.10)
Here is an interesting bit. I see one circumstance where Flash 10 will generally work: Go to youtube or some other site with a flash movie on the page. You will see a white region where the flash movie is. Right click on the flash movie and the flash menu comes up. None of the actions do anything, except the last one, which says About Adobe Flash Player 10. Select that one, and a new tab opens. Wait a while to be sure the page is loaded, and then change to that tab. The flash movie at the to will usually play. However, if you reload this page, it will be a white rectangle. -- Flashplugin not working in Konqueror (8.10) https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/281808 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Kubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to kdebase in ubuntu. -- kubuntu-bugs mailing list kubuntu-b...@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/kubuntu-bugs
[Bug 281808] Re: Flashplugin not working in Konqueror (8.10)
BTW, I should note that the original problem with flash 10 is INTERMITTENT. I have seen flash work on pages from time to time (I would estimate about 1 out of 20 or so. Then, even pressing reload on the same page, flash will fail to start. It is also noteworthy that if you right click on the region where the flash applet is supposed to be, you *do* get the flash menu, so this seems to be some sort of race that keeps the frames of the movie from playing. -- Flashplugin not working in Konqueror (8.10) https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/281808 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Kubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to kdebase in ubuntu. -- kubuntu-bugs mailing list kubuntu-b...@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/kubuntu-bugs

[Bug 281808] Re: Flashplugin not working in Konqueror (8.10)
Just to verify: I see this same problem on 9.04 (Jaunty alpha 4). I can fix it by doing a simpler version of what jartsa suggests above. 1) Go to adobe, and get the deb for ubuntu 8.04+, save locally 2) sudo dpkg --install install_flash_player_10_linux.deb 3) Then get the fp9 archive as suggested, from http://fpdownload.macromedia.com/get/flashplayer/installers/archive/fp9_archive.zip 4) Unzip, then cd to fp9_archive/9r152 (The highest numbered version) 5) tar xvfz flashplayer9r152_linux.tar.gz 6) sudo chown root.root libflashplayer.so 7) sudo mv libflashplayer.so /usr/lib/adobe-flashplugin/ This quietly replaces flash 10 with flash 9, and I believe you could uninstall it if you wanted using dpkg. [Bug 281679] Re: Could not find service 'kfmclient'
This is actually a general problem with all KDE3.5 apps under KDE4. The issue appears to be that there are separate directories /usr/share/applications/kde and /usr/share/applications/kde4, and the desktop files construct separate sycoca files. Since kfmclient.desktop is only installed in the kde4 directory, the KDE 3.5 apps can't find it in their sycoca. A simple fix is just to make a symlink from the kde4 file into the kde directory. I.e: cd /usr/share/applications/kde sudo ln -S ../kde4/kfmclient* . kbuildsycoca and the problem disappears. It was not virtual. -- [feisty] Kubuntu timezone page broken https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/96958 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is the bug contact for Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
[Bug 96958] Re: [feisty] Kubuntu timezone page broken
On further thought: I have noticed that on some older chipsets, such as the neomagic one in the Vaio, and on a i810 I have in an older Dell, the machine doesn't quite work properly unless I manually edit the xorg.conf file to include XaaNoPixMapCache. (And in the neomagic case, I need to use SWCursor as well.) There are a few other flaky things I see during the install, such as bars across the start menu when I call it up. These persist right after the install, but I have fixed them in the past by adding these flags to xorg.conf after the install. I don't know if this could have anything to do with the map problem, but there's some chance it's related. Of course, there's no way to edit the xorg.conf file when it's on the CDROM, so I don't know exactly how to test this theory. Is there some way to make an ISO I could burn with a different xorg.conf? -- [feisty] Kubuntu timezone page broken https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/96958 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is the bug contact for Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
[Bug 91421] Re: machine doesn't hibernate
This seems to be working now in Feisty beta 1. -- machine doesn't hibernate https://launchpad.net/bugs/91421 -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
[Bug 97690] Can't see map on timezone screen during install
Public bug reported: Binary package hint: ubiquity I have an old Sony Vaio - PCG-XG19, with a neomagic graphics card. I was installing Kubuntu beta-1. When I tried the install, I never even saw the map. Some of the previous page was still on the display, and there were the dots representing cities, and the tooltip rectangles would display when I'd mouse over cities, but never disappear. I saw this in Feisty alpha 5. I reported it originally as part of another bug: https://launchpad.net/bugs/67572 but I no longer think it's the same thing. It's not the zoom feature, it's the whole map. Is there some way to do a screen grab at that stage of the install? ** Affects: ubiquity (Ubuntu) Importance: Undecided Status: Unconfirmed -- Can't see map on timezone screen during install https://launchpad.net/bugs/97690 -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
[Bug 91421] Re: machine doesn't hibernate
These do seem similar to my bug. I will point out that I have had a problem on a different machine (a dell Inspiron 6400) even with Edgy, though it hibernated fine in Dapper. I had always assumed that this was because of something do with ndiswrapper. However, this bug here is on a machine without wifi. BTW, bug 80614 above is different in that I am not seeing the words Power down. In the log it looks like it immediately resumed, but there's no indication (that I can see) of what went wrong. -- machine doesn't hibernate https://launchpad.net/bugs/91421 -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
[Bug 50785] Re: Wont suspend (or hibernate), won't say why, and is annoying.
I have a Dell Inspiron 6400 and I am seeing the same symptoms. When I upgraded from Dapper to Edgy, I could never get it to hibernate. (I am seeing the same problem with a much older Sony Vaio PCG-XG19 on feisty Herd 5). -- Wont suspend (or hibernate), won't say why, and is annoying. https://launchpad.net/bugs/50785 -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 91421] machine doesn't hibernate
Public bug reported: This may be the same bug as this one: https://launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux-source-2.6.20/+bug/80614 but since that is marked as fixed, I am resubmitting it. I am running kubuntu feisty herd 5. When I try to hibernate the machine it does a bunch of things, but doesn't actually power down. Instead, when I touch a key, it simply shows that it is locked. From the syslog (attached below) It seems that it might have decided to resume immediately. (The syslog contains two consecutive hibernate attempts.) ** Affects: Ubuntu Importance: Undecided Status: Unconfirmed -- machine doesn't hibernate https://launchpad.net/bugs/91421 -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
