[Bug 1741767]

2020-11-19 Thread Mitch Golden
Are people still seeing this? I do not observe this behavior on Kubuntu
20.10 with muon 5.8.0. Could it have been a packaging issue just on
Neon?

I too have this problem. It seems that if you go into your .thunderbird
directory and delete the file addonStartup.json.lz4, thunderbird is able
to start. Restarting tb usually causes the error to appearagain, but re-
deleting this file allows it to start again.

[Bug 1397178] Re: kubuntu 14.10 plasma 5 spins up PowerMizer

2015-04-28 Thread Mitch Golden
I didn't get the time to test this in the last two months. It is
actually a fairly serious project as it requires a fairly lengthy
install. However, as it is now time to upgrade to 15.04, I will get on
it this weekend.

Re: [Bug 1397178] Re: kubuntu 14.10 plasma 5 spins up PowerMizer

2015-02-26 Thread Mitch Golden
I tried two nights ago to install the alpha 2 but was unable to do it.
When I tried, ubiqity was starting the bouncing cursor and then stopping.
When I did the command from the shell, I found that it was failing to
delete a file called polkit-inhibit (sorry, forgot the directory for the
moment). I haven't had a chance to file a bug, will do in the next day or
so.

I will try in the next week or so with this build.

Mitch Golden, this bug was reported a while ago and there hasn't been
any activity in it recently. We were wondering if this is still an
issue? If so, could you please test for this with the latest development
release of Ubuntu? ISO images are available from
 http://cdimage.ubuntu.com/daily-live/current/ .

If it remains an issue, could you please run the following command in
the development release from a Terminal as it will automatically gather
and attach updated debug information to this report:

 apport-collect -p xorg 1397178

Please ensure you have xdiagnose installed, and that you click the Yes
button for attaching additional debugging information.

As well, given the information from the prior release is already
available, testing a release prior to the development one would not be
 helpful.

 Thank you for your understanding.

[Bug 1397172] [NEW] kubuntu 14.10 plasma 5 iso doesn't start X

2014-11-27 Thread Mitch Golden
Public bug reported:

This is easy to reproduce: Burn a kubuntu 14.10 plasma 5 ISO, downloaded
from here:

http://www.kubuntu.org/news/kubuntu-14.10

Boot from it. X will not start, and the machine falls to a command
prompt. Typing startx starts everything and it's possible to proceed.

I should note that that my machine has an nvidia 560M graphics card in
it, and is running the nouveau driver on the ISO.

Rick Timmis on the kubuntu-developer list notes:

I can confirm, same problem install fails on init-rcd scriot, and complains
about saned, and drops to command prompt.
I too typed startx, and was off and running again, amd64 iso, which is 1.2Gd
a DVD image.

[Bug 1397178] [NEW] kubuntu 14.10 plasma 5 spins up PowerMizer

2014-11-27 Thread Mitch Golden
Public bug reported:

I have installed 14.10 Plasma 5 on my laptop, which is a vintage 2011
System 76.  Of greatest significance is that it has an nvidia 560M
graphics card in it.

When I first installed 14.04, I noticed that the PowerMizer report of the
NVIDIA X Server Settings would report that the graphics chip's clock was
more or less constantly spun up to its highest clock rate.  Heat and power
use were very high, and I constantly heard the fan running.

I found there were two ways to fix this:

(1) Add a file called 05-nvidia.conf to /usr/share/X11/xorg.conf.d
containing the lines:

Section Device
 Identifier Device0
 Driver nvidia
 VendorName NVIDIA Corporation
 Option RegistryDwords PowerMizerEnable=0x1;
PerfLevelSrc=0x; PowerMizerDefault=0x3; PowerMizerDefaultAC=0x3
EndSection

This pegged the graphics card at its lowest possible clock rate, which was
adequate for most things but sometimes led to bad playback on some videos.

See: https://forums.opensuse.org/showthread.php/410089-nvidia-
powermizer-how-tweak

(2) Revert to the 304 driver.  This still spun up to high clock rates a
bit more often than it seemed to need to, but was fairly reasonable
otherwise.

I expected that this would soon be rectified, since I saw that version
337.25 of the driver allegedly fixed some issue with performance in KDE:

http://www.nvidia.com/download/driverResults.aspx/76278/en-us

Jump ahead to yesterday when I installed 14.10 plasma 5 -

I noticed that even with the 304 driver the PowerMizer reported the clock
at its highest rate.  With nothing moving on the screen at all and my not
touching the mouse, it was pegged.

I found that even installing the xorg-edgers driver (340 I believe) had no
effect.  Furthermore, 340 did not respond to the xorg.conf settings file
above.  The only way I can get plasma 5 to run reasonably on this machine
is to revert to 304 and *also* put the settings file in.  This is of
course not optimal.

Is there some way to determine what exactly is happening that causes the
graphics clock to spin up so high? Nothing much is happening. Just
scrolling a window in firefox is sufficient to start it.

[Bug 1394856] Re: Nvidia GPU installer misconfiguration Plasma 5

2014-11-21 Thread Mitch Golden
This is what I wrote on the kubuntu-devel list in response.

---

My concern is that this bug is sort of a worst-case scenario, as far as
responsability goes. The bug by itself is
quite serious - but it's not clear who fixes it. It isn't probably a kubuntu
packaging issue. It may be a plasma 5 kde (upstream) issue. It is I guess
even more likely to be a combination of plasma 5 and nvidia driver issue - in
which case I don't know where to report it because that driver is proprietary.

The installer actually supplies the open-source nouveau driver. There
is no control panel that reports the clock speed under nouveau. From
the sound of the fan I am guessing that nouveau is also running the
clock at a high rate a lot of the time.

At the very least all of this should be looked into by someone who knows
more about it than it - preferably before the decision to make Kubuntu
15.04 be plasma 5 is permanently taken.

[Bug 1003112] [NEW] The Filter: dropdown in the File Open menu doesn't work

2012-05-22 Thread Mitch Golden
Public bug reported:

When you try to open a file, the Filter dropdown is not usable. All the
different options turn into one single string and are not separately
selectable. Because of this bug, you can't use the filter dropdown on the Open
dialog. This means you can't open a
tab-delimited file with extension .txt as a spreadsheet, because if you use the
open dialog without using the Filter dropdown, it always opens as a text file.

This bug has already been fixed upstream and a backport of the fix
should be made in order for people to be able to open tab-delimited txt
files.

[Bug 900615] [NEW] Machine will not suspend after a second monitor is plugged in

2011-12-05 Thread Mitch Golden
Public bug reported:

I have a System76 Gazelle Pro with a 1.5 GB nVidia GeForce GTX 560M

machine hangs, and I powered off. This problem persists even if the
external monitor is no longer connected. This happens every time.

I do not have this problem when the nVidia driver is in use.

[Bug 364963] Re: flash crashes in konqueror

2009-04-26 Thread Mitch Golden
I just tried this in the released Jaunty, and while the link above still
crashes the nspluginviewer, it no longer is fixed if firefox is

firefox. Accordingly, I have changed the title to reflect that this is
an ordinary crash.

[Bug 328919] [NEW] kde3 apps can't find kfmclient

2009-02-12 Thread Mitch Golden
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: kdebase

This bug is closely related to two already filed. One is
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/amarok/+bug/120006 which is
the specific problem of being unable to open konqueror from amarok in
Intrepid. The other is
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/kdelibs/+bug/310135 which is
the same sort of bug, but for khelpcenter. The overall problem is that
because there are two different directories /usr/share/applications/kde
and /usr/share/applications/kde4, there are also two sycoca files.
Therefore, since kfmclient is only built in kde4 and the associated
.desktop files are only in the kde4 directory, no kde3 apps can find it.
Since there are likely to be at least some kde3 apps in some form for at
least a while yet, this problem should be rectified in general. It will
go away in Amarok once that is ported to kde4, so it is not appropriate
to file this bug under Amarok.

In other words:

In Intrepid,
Open a KDE3 app (such as digiKam or Amarok)
On the menu bar, select Help, then About digiKam
In the popup, click on the URL http://www.digikam.org

What should happen:
Konqueror should open the URL

What does happen:
An error, Unable to find service 'kfmclient'

The solution is to create a symlink from
/usr/share/applications/kde/kfmclient.desktop to
/usr/share/applications/kde4/kfmclient.desktop (and _dir _html _war as
well). I have created a patch for kde4libs and kdebase that will create
these, and create a symbol for anyone building kde4 apps who wants to
put symlinks in for other applications as well. (This may be useful for
khelpcenter, in bug 310135, though it appears that issue was solved a
different way.)

[Bug 281808] Re: Flashplugin not working in Konqueror (8.10)

2009-02-10 Thread Mitch Golden
Here is an interesting bit. I see one circumstance where Flash 10 will
generally work: Go to youtube or some other site with a flash movie on
the page. You will see a white region where the flash movie is. Right
click on the flash movie and the flash menu comes up. None of the
actions do anything, except the last one, which says About Adobe Flash
Player 10. Select that one, and a new tab opens. Wait a while to be
sure the page is loaded, and then change to that tab. The flash movie
at the to will usually play. However, if you reload this page, it will
be a white rectangle.

[Bug 281808] Re: Flashplugin not working in Konqueror (8.10)

2009-02-09 Thread Mitch Golden
BTW, I should note that the original problem with flash 10 is
INTERMITTENT. I have seen flash work on pages from time to time (I
would estimate about 1 out of 20 or so. Then, even pressing reload on
the same page, flash will fail to start. It is also noteworthy that if
you right click on the region where the flash applet is supposed to be,
you *do* get the flash menu, so this seems to be some sort of race that
keeps the frames of the movie from playing.

I have gotten this on every install of Jaunty from alpha 2 to alpha 4.
Interestingly, I didn't get this on alpha 4 until I did an upgrade.

[Bug 281808] Re: Flashplugin not working in Konqueror (8.10)

2009-02-08 Thread Mitch Golden
Just to verify: I see this same problem on 9.04 (Jaunty alpha 4). I can
fix it by doing a simpler version of what jartsa suggests above.

1) Go to adobe, and get the deb for ubuntu 8.04+, save locally

2) sudo dpkg --install install_flash_player_10_linux.deb

3) Then get the fp9 archive as suggested, from
http://fpdownload.macromedia.com/get/flashplayer/installers/archive/fp9_archive.zip

4) Unzip, then cd to fp9_archive/9r152 (The highest numbered version)

5) tar xvfz flashplayer9r152_linux.tar.gz

6) sudo chown root.root libflashplayer.so

7) sudo mv libflashplayer.so /usr/lib/adobe-flashplugin/

This quietly replaces flash 10 with flash 9, and I believe you could
uninstall it if you wanted using dpkg. I see that it now works in
Konqueror

[Bug 281679] Re: Could not find service 'kfmclient'

2008-12-25 Thread Mitch Golden
This is actually a general problem with all KDE3.5 apps under KDE4.

The issue appears to be that there are separate directories
/usr/share/applications/kde and /usr/share/applications/kde4, and the
desktop files construct separate sycoca files. Since kfmclient.desktop
is only installed in the kde4 directory, the KDE 3.5 apps can't find it
in their sycoca.

A simple fix is just to make a symlink from the kde4 file into the kde
directory. I.e:

cd /usr/share/applications/kde
sudo ln -S ../kde4/kfmclient* .
kbuildsycoca

and the problem disappears.

I will be filing a bug against Konqueror for this, but it afflicts all
KDE4 services in KDE3.5 apps.

This issue afflicts all KDE 3.5 applications, and includes not just

I think I have an idea some of what is going on.

The old card I am using shows up in KNetworkManager as not supporting

it *can* connect to it, it doesn't initially do it. If I use a network

[Bug 123914] Re: KNetworkManager doesn't initially connect to wired network

2007-11-01 Thread Mitch Golden
In the released version of Gutsy, I see the problem on my old Sony Vaio
PCG-XG19 with the Xircom cardbus PCMCIA card. It doesn't connect on
login, though does just fine if I tell it to do so manually. However,
it does not respond to the cable being unplugged.

[Bug 89092] Re: Unable to connect to an open network, wlassistant can connect

2007-09-16 Thread Mitch Golden
I just tried testing with a Live CD. (I can't install Gutsy since I use
by Dell Inspiron 6400 for production work - it has Feisty on it).
Here's the problem: when I install ndiswrapper on the machine, it
generally requires a power-cycle reboot to get the card to work. Or at
least, that's how I usually do it. Of course with a Live CD that brings
the machine back to the uninstalled state.

Perhaps I can try something else if I can think of it, but I didn't want
to wait longer before replying.

[Bug 131994] knetworkmanager crashed on resume from hibernate

2007-08-12 Thread Mitch Golden
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: knetworkmanager

This appears to be a different bug from 129361. Normally I am able to
hibernate-resume multiple times without issue. However, I just got a
crash, with the backtrace below. The only difference in the resume this
time was that the network hub into which the machine was plugged was
turned off. It may have tried to connect to a wireless network.

Re: [Bug 123917] Re: Can't start Firefox

2007-07-12 Thread Mitch Golden
In my case it was the following:

- Fresh install of Kubuntu Gutsy with the i386 desktop CD, Tribe 2.
(The machine is an old Sony Vaio PCG XG-19.)

- Upgrade all packages from the repository.

(I should note at this point that there's something broken about the
repository or Tribe 2, because the Adept tells me it would break packages.
I haven't gotten to the bottom of it yet, but I think it's unrelated.)

- Use Adept to select a list of other packages. (This was done all at
once.) Of course, other packages may be installed because of this.

[Bug 124976] System Settings - Monitor Display won't set hardware type

2007-07-09 Thread Mitch Golden
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: kde-guidance

I installed Kubuntu i386 Gutsy Tribe 2 on a Sony Vaio PCG-XG19. I did
the install in safe graphics mode, and so when I was done the system had
vesa as the driver in xorg.conf (is that supposed to happen?)

At any rate, once the system was installed, I I tried to change the
hardware type using System Settings - Monitor and Display - Hardware
tab. While it correctly detected my chipset and claimed it would apply
the changes, I saw no change in /etc/X11/xorg.conf. I tried several
times to change the hardware using this, but it never did anything that
I could detect.

Re: [Bug 123917] Re: Can't start Firefox

2007-07-05 Thread Mitch Golden
Unfortunately the machine has died and I can't immediately retest or even
see what was on it. However, I can say that this was an entirely virgin
install of gutsy alpha 2, and then an install of Firefox (and other
stuff), and it was the very first time I had tried to open Firefox.

[Bug 123917] Re: Can't start Firefox

2007-07-04 Thread Mitch Golden
What it seems to be doing is not creating a profile directory in the
.mozilla/firefox directory. It may be creating a file instead. At any
rate, if I manually create a directory (i.e. outside of firefox) and
tell it to use that then it works.

I am running Feisty Kubuntu on a Dell Inspiron 6400. I always allow the

problem appears confined to my old Sony Vaio with the PCMCIA ethernet

[Bug 123914] KNetworkManager doesn't initially connect to wired network

2007-07-03 Thread Mitch Golden
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: knetworkmanager

I just found this in Gutsy Alpha 2. Networkmanager / KNetworkmanger
worked fine in Feisty and even Gutsy alpha 1. Gutsy alpha 2 has
KNetworkManager 0.2 so it may have something to do with that.

When I log in to the system, I have no connection, and the icon shows
disconnected. I need to manually select the wired network for it to
connect, and then it works.

It may be the same as this bug, but that one is closed so I am
resubmitting this:

https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/network-manager/+bug/105234

I have an old Sony Vaio PCG-XG19, and I have a Xircom cardbus PCMCIA
card for a network connection.

[Bug 119567] Re: [gutsy] KDE Intermittent lockup booting from CD

2007-07-03 Thread Mitch Golden
I have tried downloading and burning the gutsy alpha 2 i386 desktop CD.
This time I was quite careful to do the MD5 sums and verify the disk
after burning (and before installing). I did see it lock up once before
the install. It only happened in normal (as opposed to safe graphics)
mode.

I will try it a few more times and see if I can replicate. I suppose
it's possible that I have a hardware problem if no one else is seeing
this.

[Bug 119567] KDE Intermittent lockup booting from CD

2007-06-09 Thread Mitch Golden
Public bug reported:

I am using an old Sony Vaio PCG-XG19 and am testing Kubuntu Gutsy
tribe1. When I boot from the CD (prior to doing any install) I will see
it boot and then start the KDE session. It gets into the KDE desktop,
and I see it open a window that says something like scanning trash:/.
This stays on the screen for a while. What happens next varies.
Sometimes it proceeds normally - the window closes and the desktop is
fine. Sometimes I hear the stinger sound as though something crashed.
On at least several occasions the machine completely locked up, as in no
movement of the cursor when I touched the mousepad.

It did this in both normal and safe graphics modes.

Just ran into this one as well. It works fine once I apt-get install

rdesktop.

[Bug 96958] Re: [feisty] Kubuntu timezone page broken

2007-04-24 Thread Mitch Golden
I tried it with the final release of feisty, and here's an amusing
datapoint: I tried installing with safe graphics mode and the map was
still missing. The video hardware in the KDE system settings was shown
as vesa, not neomagic. When I run in non-safe graphics mode there are
certain problems I see which I wasn't seeing in safe graphics mode, so
XaaNoPixMapCache must have been turned on.

(Then I set it VGA, but the display didn't work at all in that case.)

[Bug 96958] Re: [feisty] Kubuntu timezone page broken

2007-04-05 Thread Mitch Golden
On further thought: I have noticed that on some older chipsets, such as
the neomagic one in the Vaio, and on a i810 I have in an older Dell, the
machine doesn't quite work properly unless I manually edit the xorg.conf
file to include XaaNoPixMapCache. (And in the neomagic case, I need to
use SWCursor as well.) There are a few other flaky things I see during
the install, such as bars across the start menu when I call it up.
These persist right after the install, but I have fixed them in the past
by adding these flags to xorg.conf after the install.

I don't know if this could have anything to do with the map problem, but
there's some chance it's related. Of course, there's no way to edit the
xorg.conf file when it's on the CDROM, so I don't know exactly how to
test this theory. Is there some way to make an ISO I could burn with a
different xorg.conf?

[Bug 97690] Can't see map on timezone screen during install

2007-03-28 Thread Mitch Golden
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: ubiquity

I have an old Sony Vaio - PCG-XG19, with a neomagic graphics card. I was
installing Kubuntu beta-1.

When I tried the install, I never even saw the map. Some of the previous
page was still on the display, and there were the dots representing
cities, and the tooltip rectangles would display when I'd mouse over
cities, but never disappear.

I saw this in Feisty alpha 5. I reported it originally as part of
another bug: https://launchpad.net/bugs/67572 but I no longer think it's
the same thing. It's not the zoom feature, it's the whole map.

Is there some way to do a screen grab at that stage of the install?

These do seem similar to my bug. I will point out that I have had a

BTW, bug 80614 above is different in that I am not seeing the words
