NFS auto-unmounting upon suspend is still important to me. I'm on 12.04
(which is still a supported release, of course).

[Bug 954337] [NEW] rekonq does not know how to handle this protocol: blank

2012-03-13 Thread MountainX
Public bug reported:

This affects me with Kubuntu 12.04 beta 1 64bit installed via Alternate
installer.

Use Rekonq to download and save a file. I tested with some JPEGs and tar.bz2
files.
After downloading, go to Downloads in Rekonq
Choose Open Directory for a downloaded item.

Expected result:
Dolphin will open to the directory of the downloaded item.

Actual result:
Error dialog with message: rekonq does not know how to handle this protocol:
Nothing follows the protocol.

The same error happens when trying to Open file for the downloaded it.

Dolphin does have the correct applications associated with files, so
this issue just affects the browser. (Firefox also has the same issue,
but no other applications appear to be affected.)

[Bug 953700] [NEW] Kubuntu 12.04 Firefox and Rekong don't know how to open downloaded files

2012-03-12 Thread MountainX
Public bug reported:

I just installed Kubuntu 12.04 beta 1.

Both Rekong and Firefox don't know how to Open Containing Folder for
downloaded items. They also don't know how open the item itself.

Furthermore, if I manually tell Firefox (in the dialog) to remember the
file associations, that creates a new problem. Every file opens in
Dolphin first, then Dolphin opens the correct application.

Here are the steps to reproduce this.
1. boot up into a Live CD.
2. change software sources to enable downloading packages
3. install Firefox using the menu item under Main Menu Internet Firefox
installer
4. open Firefox after it finishes installing
5. download and save any file. I tested with a PDF.
6. open the downloads dialog (Firefox Tools Downloads)
7. right click the downloaded item and choose Open Containing Folder.
[8. for many file types, attempting to open the item from this Downloads
dialogs, such as opening JPEG, will produce the same issue.]

Expected result:
Firefox should know to open the folder in Dolphin.
It should also know how to open various types of content with the correct
application (i.e., using mime types).

Actual results:
Firefox does not know how to open the folder. Dolphin is not even suggested as
a default option.
Firefox also doesn't know how to open most file types.
Rekonq has the same (or similar) problems.

This issue is present in both an installed system (64 bit via Alt
installer) as well as a Live environment from the DVD.

Possibly relevant:

In Firefox preferences Applications, the only content types shown are
irc, ircs, mailto, podcast, tar file, webca and webfeed. Normally, there
would be many more.

[Bug 760131] Re: Power consumption raised significantly in natty

2011-04-28 Thread MountainX
I hope this is an appropriate question here:

Can someone explain this comment?

Leann Ogasawara on 2011-04-25
Changed in ubuntu-release-notes:
status:In Progress → Fix Released

The status says fix released, yet it doesn't appear to be fixed. Does
that mean the fix is coming or does it mean the fix didn't really fix
it?

Thanks for any reply.

[Bug 506116] Re: autofs suspend/hibernate script should be ported from apmd system to pm-utils

2011-01-07 Thread MountainX
I'm running 10.10 and it fails to suspend to RAM if I have used any NFS
shares. Even if no files are currently open, if some files on a share
were previously opened during the current session, Ubuntu will fail to
suspend. If I log out and log back in, I can suspend if I do so before
beginning any work that involves a share.

I tried the script in comment #1. It didn't resolve the issue. I simply
placed it in the location mentioned (/etc/pm/sleep.d/80_autofs) and made
it executable and tried to suspend. Is more required to make it work?

[Bug 292698] Re: upgrade to intrepid broke hibernate/suspend (2 tasks refusing to freeze) (nfs related?)

2011-01-07 Thread MountainX
I'm running 10.10 and it fails to suspend to RAM if I have used any NFS
shares. This happens 100% of the time and is easily reproducible. (I'm
using NFS 3.) Even if no files are currently open, if some files on a
share were previously opened during the current session, Ubuntu will
fail to suspend.

If I log out of the desktop and log back in, I can suspend if I do so
before beginning any work that involves a share. This also produces the
stated outcome 100% of the time.

I tried the solution in https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/pm-
utils/+bug/506116. It didn't resolve the issue for me.

Here is a typical log. Clearly, this is NFS related.

[Bug 506116] Re: autofs suspend/hibernate script should be ported from apmd system to pm-utils

I mount my NFS shares via /etc/fstab using entries such as:

10.10.1.1:/home/shared /home/shared nfs auto,rw,noatime 0 0

Is the auto option used there the same as (or related to) the autofs
mentioned in this bug report? I had assumed so, but now I realize I might be
wrong because when I run ./autofs suspend the response is:
autofs: command not found

(Sorry if I have posted to the wrong bug report.)

[Bug 597070] Re: Imac Radeon HD 4850 switch Mini Display Port output during install resulting black screen

2010-11-02 Thread MountainX
This issue is affecting me too. I verified that this is the exact
behavior I'm seeing with my iMac 11,1. This issue does not affect all
model iMacs. Mine is a 27 late 2009 model.

Here is how to check the serial number to determine the model.

On the bottom of your iMac stand, you'll find a label with the serial number
printed on it, or from the Apple menu, choose About This Mac. Configure To
Order (CTO) models are designated with an asterisk (*). Check the last three
characters on the serial number:
iMac (Mid 2010)
DAS, DNM* iMac (21.5-inch, Mid 2010)
DB7, DNN* iMac (21.5-inch, Mid 2010)
DB6, DNP* iMac (27-inch, Mid 2010)
DB5, DNR* iMac (27-inch, Mid 2010)

2010-07-02 Thread MountainX
*** This bug is a duplicate of bug 524454 ***

My experience is exactly the same as comment 18

I quote:

I had this same issue after a reboot.

Ganton's post/link fixed it.

I restarted my laptop because it could not be resumed: only a black screen
with the shell cursor is shown on the top left.
Network-manager-kde systray says that network management disabled
This fixed my problem:
service network-manager stop
rm /var/lib/NetworkManager/NetworkManager.state
service network-manager start

FYI, I'm running openSUSE on my laptop now, so I won't be testing the latest
release of Ubuntu right now. (I hope to come back to Ubuntu when KDE support
is improved to match openSUSE.)
I guess you can close out this bug. Thanks.

 Hi MountainX,

This bug was reported a while ago and there hasn't been any activity in
it recently. We were wondering if this is still an issue? Can you try
with the latest development release of Ubuntu? ISO CD images are
 available from http://cdimage.ubuntu.com/releases/lucid.

If it remains an issue, could you run the following command from a
 Terminal (Applications-Accessories-Terminal). It will automatically
gather and attach updated debug information to this report.

 apport-collect -p linux 326043

Also, if you could test the latest upstream kernel available that would
be great. It will allow additional upstream developers to examine the
issue. Refer to https://wiki.ubuntu.com/KernelMainlineBuilds . Once
you've tested the upstream kernel, please remove the 'needs-upstream-

I agree - it is probably not a coincidence that our motherboards so are
similar. They both use the nvidia nforce chip set and have other
similarities (such as same CPU socket). I presume this error only
happens on certain hardware.

Now that we have two examples of this error, maybe someone will get
interested.

Or maybe (hopefully) someone will tell us if this is mostly likely an
Ubuntu bug or an Asus bug.

[Bug 205895] Re: [Hardy] Wine 100% cpu usage

2009-09-16 Thread MountainX
I see the 100% CPU usage from wineserver on Ubuntu 9.04 amd64 with both
wine 1.0.1 and wine 1.1.29. I have also reproduced it with ies4linux
2.99.0 and 2.99.0.1.

I can reproduce this when running ie6 under wine directly. However, the
more troubling problem is that it happens when running Microsoft Money
2003 under wine every time the online banking function is used. (If
Money is run but no online banking is done, the bug does not happen. It
only happens after encypted internet communication by Money.) In this
scenario, the ie6 script mentioned in Comment #7 From Ter Rymon
(http://bugs.winehq.org/show_bug.cgi?id=13687) is not ever called, so I
don't see how that could be the explanation.

The 100% CPU utilization by wineserver apparently occurs after encypted
internet communication by _components_ of ie6, even without the web
browser itself ever being opened.

I also see this on ALL websites that use HTTPS when accessed via ie6.

In comment #51 above by Julian Robbins, removing | debug is mentioned.
My script is two instances of | debugPipe, which is different. I
removed them anyway and it did not resolve the issue.

I did a clean install of wine 1.1.29 and this time I did not use

Money 2003 to work because of missing encryption components. At the
moment I'm not geting 100% CPU load, but I'm also not able to connect to
online banking so I cannot say what will happen if I get online banking
to work. The 100% CPU load may come back.

[Bug 328127] Re: gnome-keyring-daemon returns Agent admitted failure to sign using the key.

2009-05-11 Thread MountainX
I have the problem on a brand new Jaunty AMD64 install. As Johnathon
wrote, I can reproduce the error and also can use the setting of
SSH_AUTH_SOCK=0 to temporarily bypass it.

To reproduce, I open a terminal and type ssh myu...@myserver.
I do this command many times per day to different servers (all passwordless)
and I never had this issue until I installed Jaunty today.

Responses (the best I can do):
 * If gnome-keyring-daemon is crashing, I need a backtrace.
I'm running ssh in a terminal.

 * If there's lines in /var/log/auth.log or ~/.xsession-errors I need those.
I do not see any relevant messages in these files.

 * Or I need a key that I can use to duplicate the problem.
I will make a new key (that I can attach) and try to reproduce the steps after
I unset SSH_AUTH_SOCK=0 (once I figure out how to do that...)

[Bug 351750] Re: Install Fails - Jaunty beta

2009-03-31 Thread MountainX
You can extract it by going back to the main menu and selecting save
debug logs.

It is not possible to navigate in the installer when this error happens.
The installer presents two choices: go back or continue. Neither choice
will move away from the screen showing the error.

The only way I have found to get out of the installer is to reboot.

What else can you suggest? (I can get to the other terminal windows such
as Alt-F2, Alt-F3, etc.)

[Bug 351750] [NEW] Install Fails - Jaunty beta

2009-03-30 Thread MountainX
Public bug reported:

http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?p=6983082#post6983082

I have tried to install 6 times without success.

1. I have burned two CDs and they both validate as good.
2. Both CDs stop at exactly the same point in the installation on this
computer. See info below.
3. Using the same installation CD in another computer works, so it is not an
issue with the CD.

Conclusion: there is a bug in Jaunty (the installer) that shows up on
this hardware.

The install fails at the same point every time. When I switch to the
Alt-F4 terminal, here is what I see:

preseed: locale: cannot set LC_ALL to default locale. no such file or folder...
in-target: reading package lists...
in-target: the following NEW packages will be installed
Please insert the disk [Jaunty...] in drive /cdrom/

I can open another terminal (Alt-F2) and cd to, and ls the cdrom, so
the CD disk is visible and it can be read from.

I'm using the beta alternate installer amd64 on a computer that is
currently running Hardy. I'm installing fresh to a different partition
(one that used to hold Windows).

Let me know what hardware reports are required.

[Bug 287879] Re: cryptsetup does not understand UUID= in fstab and conf.d/resume

2009-03-09 Thread MountainX
Hi - I am trying to determine if this issue applies to me. Is this the
right place to ask some questions? (newbie)

My system:
$ uname -a: Linux 2.6.27-7-generic #1 SMP x86_64 GNU/Linux
$ dpkg -s cryptsetup
Package: cryptsetup
Status: install ok installed
Architecture: amd64
Version: 2:1.0.6-6ubuntu2.2

I'm guessing I either need the patch or a backport. If I need to use the
patch, how would I do so?

I just installed Ubuntu on this server. I have not had problems from
package updates yet. I'm guessing I will if I don't use the patch...

At the moment, I am using /dev/disk/by-uuid/ in both fstab and crypttab.
It is working.

However, I would like to switch all volume references to labels. Will
that present any problems? Thanks.

[Bug 40075] Re: SCSI driver for arcmsr not added to initrd

2009-02-24 Thread MountainX
This exact problem is happening to me with 8.10 64bit and an Areca 1220.
I have reinstalled about a dozen times. If I put the /boot partition on
a drive on the Areca controller, Ubuntu will not boot. If I put the boot
partition on another drive, no problem.

I would like to know why I am still seeing this problem in 8.10 if it
has been resolved. How might we find out if my problem is exactly the
same one? Thanks.

[Bug 327327] Re: Can't open multiple large PDF files

2009-02-10 Thread MountainX
Thank you for your interest in this bug. Are you sure you want me to
attach 8 to 10 large PDF documents here? In my experience it does not
matter which PDF documents I open. After a certain number of large
documents are open, Evince refuses to open any more, even if I have
plenty of system memory left.

[Bug 327327] [NEW] Can't open multiple large PDF files

2009-02-09 Thread MountainX
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: evince

When I try to open multiple PDF documents in Evince Document Viewer (the
default app), after several documents are open, Evince fails to load the
next one. This always happens, but the hang point (number of docs)
depends on the size of the docs.

Here are the steps I used to produce the bug just now:
1. check system monitor memory. It shows 1.2 GiB used of 3.0 GiB (and no swap
memory used out of 3.4 GiB).
2. Open 5 PDF documents. No problems.
3. Open the 6th PDF. It fails to load. No error is shown, but Evince just shows
me a blank window.
4. check system monitor again. It shows 1.4 GiB used of 3.0 GiB (and still no
swap memory used out of 3.4 GiB).
5. if I close a previously opened PDF document, I can open the 6th one that
would not open before. So it is not a problem with a specific PDF document. It
appears to be a problem with how many large documents I have open. The PDF
files in this test were more than 1 MB each (and largest was 11 MB).

I repeated the test with smaller PDF documents (all under 200k) and I
was able to open 8 without problems and I probably could have opened
more. But eventually, Evince will hang as described above. I know this
from past experience.

Any ideas about how to troubleshoot this?

I'm running Hardy 32 bit. Computer specs: Asus A8N5X, Athlon 64X2 3800+,
4GB CORSAIR XMS DDR500 RAM, GeForce 8600GT 256MB GDDR3 PCIe x16 SLI

[Bug 326043] [NEW] Font size optimisation misbehaving

2009-02-05 Thread MountainX
Public bug reported:

I upgraded to Ubuntu 9.04 on my T61p thinkpad. Afterwards the screen
fonts were all huge, making the appearance of Ubuntu (all menus and all
applications, including text in documents) very ugly and not user
friendly.

I found that the problem was related to a setting of 146 dots per inch
resolution in Appearance Fonts Details Resolution. Changing this
back to 96 dpi resolved the issue.

I see that Font size optimisation is advertised as a new feature of
9.04. Font dot-per-inch settings are now optimised based on the
monitor’s capabilities, rather than defaulting to 96dpi.

Apparently this new feature isn't working as intended.

My hardware:
ThinkPad T61p 6459CTO Core2Due, 15.4 WUXGA TFT, NVIDIA FX570M, 4GB Geil RAM,
120 GB HDD

(I have no idea which package this is related to.)

[Bug 88746] Re: ehci_hcd module causes I/O errors in USB 2.0 devices

2008-12-08 Thread MountainX
Pardon me for asking my question a second time. I appreciate anyone
pointing me to a source of info that will tell me which hardware is NOT
subject to this bug. I'm willing to change hardware to keep Ubuntu.

My problem sounds identical to Andy Rabagliati's. For example, I see
endlessly repeating messages like this:

[ 19.080009] usb 5-3: reset high speed USB device using ehci_hcd and address 4
[ 19.336509] usb 5-3: reset high speed USB device using ehci_hcd and address 4

[ 20.088009] usb 5-3: reset high speed USB device using ehci_hcd and address 4

Which chipsets are safe to use with Ubuntu to avoid this problem?
Thanks.

I could certainly change brands for my card reader (Device 005).

From reading past messages on this bug, I was under the impression that
this problem is commonly seen the nVidia chipset found in my Asus A8N5X

[Bug 216878] Re: Slow disk transfer rate on Hardy

2008-08-06 Thread MountainX
I'm seeing slow disk transfers with Hardy (8.4.1) on a server. Windows
2003 server on older/slower hardware is performing better. I need to
improve the Ubuntu server performance! :)

Here are some examples of hdparm results on my Ubuntu Hardy server.
These are from a RAID-5 array on an LSI MegaRAID 320-2E SCSI controller
with 4x Seagate 15k rpm drives.

/dev/mapper/sdX_crypt:
 Timing cached reads: 1378 MB in 2.00 seconds = 688.89 MB/sec
 Timing buffered disk reads: 166 MB in 3.01 seconds = 55.12 MB/sec

/dev/mapper/sdX_crypt:
 Timing cached reads: 1368 MB in 2.00 seconds = 683.69 MB/sec
 Timing buffered disk reads: 170 MB in 3.02 seconds = 56.37 MB/sec

I have all the relevant info (dmesg, lspci, lsmod, hdparm, bonnie++
output, etc.) I will post it here if requested. Thanks.

[Bug 234824] [NEW] display error when using switch user feature

2008-05-25 Thread MountainX
Public bug reported:

See this forum thread: http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?p=5040473

I had been working in Hardy with several applications open. A family
member came along and switched to their user account for a little while.
When finished, they clicked switch user and left the computer at the GDM
login screen so I could log in and switch back to my session.

When I got back to the computer, the screen was a white-silverish color
and blank. It has a mouse cursor, but nothing else.

I used ctrl-alt-F1 to switch to a virtual console and with top I see
that all my processes are running. However, I cannot figure out how to
get my gnome desktop back. Alt-F7 just returns me to the blank white
screen.

I'm running compiz and nvidia restricted drivers. I do not want to use
ctrl-del-backspace or reboot because I was in the middle of unsaved work
when we switched users.

Solution:

Quote:

you back into the Gnome desktop.
Not sure what's causing this bug to be honest, but this seems to work most of
the time for me. I have had to reboot once or twice because of this, though.

Edit: Don't think it's a compiz bug. I'm not running compiz on my installation
and I still get this bug when switching between the root account and my regular
account.

Thank you!!! This was the solution. Since we had used the user switching
feature, I had to first type my username, then the password and like magic my
whole desktop appeared with all my running apps and data!

The only way to tell where to type is to watch the mouse point change
shape to an I-beam indicating it is in a text input field. The entire
screen is completely blank except for the mouse pointer.

This must be a bug in either the screen saver or the monitor power
saving features. However, I have no idea how to report this bug.

disabled several of my favorite plugins. One of those plugins I disabled

weeks, so I think I would have seen the lockup if it was going to
happen. So I'm confirming mannheim's observation: no animation plugin,

[Bug 216402] [NEW] Not all updates can be installed- Hardy, volumeid marked for remov

2008-04-12 Thread MountainX
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: volumeid

Using Hardy beta which was clean-installed from the alternate CD with an
encrypted file system. Have been getting automatic updates daily without
any problems. Two days ago Update Manager gave me the message:

Not all updates can be installed
Run a partial update to install as many updates as possible.
This can be caused by:
*A previous upgrade which didn't complete
*Problems with some of the installed software
*Unofficial software packages not provided by Ubuntu
*Normal changes of a pre-release version of Ubuntu
Buttons: Partial Upgrade and Close

Each time I get the above dialog, I choose Close. Then I close Update
Manager and wait. Some time later I will open Update Manager and do a
Check. Initially update manager was telling me I could install 25
updates. Over the last two days that number has increased to 81 as I
continue to do new checks. However, I still get the message Not all
updates can be installed. I was thinking this would resolve itself, but
it hasn't. I have not done the partial upgrade. I am waiting for the
Not all updates can be installed message to resolve.

I used Synaptic Package Manager to mark all upgrades and the list is
attached. (Again, I didn't install/apply anything yet.)

volumeid (volume identification tool) is marked for removal. Installed
version 117-4ubuntu2

[Bug 216402] Re: Not all updates can be installed- Hardy, volumeid marked for remov

2008-04-12 Thread MountainX
Resolved!
I followed the advice in these 3 forum threads:
http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=751615 - Delete volumeid?
http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=751904 - Anybody having a hard time
updating their initramfs today?
http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=751775 - 2.6.24-16 kernel

My steps:
Steps:
1. Don't use update manager for the first part of the update.
2. Open Synaptic and mark initramfs-tools for upgrade
Details:
volumeid will be removed
grub (version 0.97-29ubuntu20) will be upgraded to version 0.97-29ubuntu21
initramfs-tools (version 0.85eubuntu35) will be upgraded to version
0.85eubuntu36
udev (version 117-4ubuntu2) will be upgraded to version 117-8
3. Click Apply - everything proceeded without problems
4. Checked Update Manager and the Not all updates can be installed message is

[Bug 186058] Re: Compiz-fusion makes the desktop freeze

2008-04-10 Thread MountainX
I am not sure which debugging packages to install. (I'm running Hardy.)
Do I need xserver-xorg-core-dbg? And which package is compiz
debugging? Is is compiz-dev? (Synaptic doesn't list anything with
compiz and debug both in the name.) Thanks.

[Bug 48404] Re: java app gui is blank in xgl and java6

2008-04-09 Thread MountainX
I am seeing this bug with Hardy beta (all updates current as of this
date) and Sun Java 6. The java app in question is MoneyDance personal
finance software.

The windows are drawn without content about 30% of the time. Repeatedly
closing and re-opening an affected window or dialog box will eventually
bring up one that has content.

This bug happens only when extra visual effects (compiz) are enabled.
When no visual effects are enabled, the bug does not happen.
Additionally, it appears not to happen when Metacity WM is enabled (and
compiz is disabled).

[Bug 213472] [NEW] Screen not redrawn after confirmation dialog to install new software

2008-04-07 Thread MountainX
Public bug reported:

Background: The confirmation dialog to install new software darkens
(shades) the entire screen while the dialog is active.

Problem: screen remains dark and confirmation dialog remains on screen
after clicking OK to dismiss the dialog.

Expected behavior: After dismissing the dialog (by clicking OK), the
dialog box should disappear and the darkened (shaded) screen should
return to normal color.

Steps to reproduce: This has happened to me in various situations. However,
here is the most recent occurrence:
1. went to website that required Flash. Chose to install Flash. (This step is
OPTIONAL! The problem happens with any step that requires the administrative
confirmation, but it is also random. It doesn't happen every single time.)
2. The confirmation dialog to perform admin tasks came on screen and the screen
became shaded a darker color.
3. I entered my password.
4. I clicked OK. The dialog did not disappear. The screen remained dark
(shaded).
5. The software installation process continued normallly without errors.
6. The screen remained shaded.
7. I worked around this bug by switching desktops, then switching back. That
forced the entire screen to redraw and the shade returned to normal.

I'm running Hardy i386 with nVidia and dual monitors.

[Bug 176589] Re: compiz randomly freezes X

2008-04-05 Thread MountainX
Same problem here on Ubuntu Hardy beta. Ctrl-Alt-Backspace has no effect
and Ctrl-Alt-Del has no effect. Ctrl-Alt-F1 and all other keys or key
combinations have no effect.

However, I am able to connect to my frozen/locked desktop computer by
ssh from my laptop. Top shows compiz.real at 100% CPU. Doing pkill -9
compiz.real causes X to restart on my desktop computer. I can then log
back in.

See this similar bug report:
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/compiz/+bug/186058

I paraphrase:
From this I came to the conclusion that Hardy's compiz must have some hard to
find problems which cause random freezes. Needless to say (but lets say it
anyway), that the problem is not related to xorg configuration or graphics
drivers as the same freeze effects occured in many different machines (with
completely different hw).

Any advice on how to provide extra info with this bug report (taking
account of the fact that the desktop freezes completely but I'm still
able to connect with ssh)?

I'm attaching:
~/.xsession-errors, /var/log/Xorg.0.log and the output of lspci -vvnn
as separate attachments

Can you provide the bug number for the other bug report? I would like to

My experience as a new user is that reporting bugs is difficult. For
example, I searched trying to find if this bug had already been reported

feedback that maybe other new Ubuntu users like me could experience
difficulty (and frustration) trying to report bugs.
