Another "me too" here.. After upgrading Jaunty -> Karmic I got into this
trouble with root partition /dev/sdc1. Using dd to zero out the boot
sector of /dev/sdc1 fixed it for me.

Looks like the remains of an old Windows version (MSWIN4.1), but no signatures 
at 0x03, 0x36 or 0x1fe.
Seems to be the same situation as Lawrence in #8 ..
