The issue only occurs after undocking while the system is running. If
you cold boot off the dock, ethernet works fine.

For reference, the stock Ubuntu 12.10 kernel worked flawlessly with the
ThinkPad docks. I will test the kernel you posted and report back.

[Bug 1169244] [NEW] Thinkpad ethernet unavailable after undocking

2013-04-15 Thread NTolerance
Public bug reported:

I've got a Lenovo ThinkPad T430s with a MiniDock Series 3. In Ubuntu
13.04, the ethernet connection is not available after undocking. The
output of 'ip link show dev eth0' shows NO_CARRIER status if a CAT5
cable is plugged into the ethernet port after undocking. The link light
comes on, but it's impossible to use the connection. It seems as if the
system still thinks it's in the docked state, so the onboard ethernet
port is overridden by the now-disconnected docking station ethernet
port.

This kernel will exhibit the problem: 3.8.0-18-generic

This kernel from the mainline PPA will not exhibit the problem:
3.9.0-030900rc6

Also, the output of 'acpi_listen' is interesting when comparing the working and
broken kernels.

3.9.0-030900rc6 (working):

[Bug 851695] Re: please bring back padevchooser

2013-03-10 Thread NTolerance
Hey Marcus,

I had this working, but it seems broken now. I recall using the Arch
wiki to set this up:

https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/PulseAudio/Examples#PulseAudio_over_network

Of course I had the same ~/.pulse-cookie file on the server and client. I
always stay away from the don't require authenticaton business.

At one time I had 12.04 running on the server and client. The client is
now running 12.10 (server still at 12.04). This may have broken my
configuration, but I'm not entirely sure.

[Bug 996906] Re: periodic audio skips with Intel HDA

2012-11-15 Thread NTolerance
I'm experiencing the same behavior as berend in post #22. My Bluetooth
headphones work great, but the HDA Intel device in my Lenovo ThinkPad
T420 gives me fits. My solution for right now is to use an external USB
audio device or Bluetooth headphones to work around the problem.

It's interesting that so many people could potentially be affected by an
issue affecting the HDA Intel hardware, yet this thread is quite small.
There's got to be a specific combination of hardware and software that
causes this issue. At this point I guess we know that snd-hda-intel and
pulseaudio are required to reproduce the issue. What other items are
common to the issue?

Here's my audio hardware for reference:

Intel Corporation 6 Series/C200 Series Chipset Family High Definition
Audio Controller (rev 04)

2012-11-12 Thread NTolerance
I've tried all of the alsa and pulse config changes as mentioned in this
thread with no luck. I experienced the same issue with 12.04.

Re: [Bug 937522] Re: rdp clipboard sync doesn't work anymore.

2012-11-07 Thread NTolerance
I've arrived at the rdesktop solution too. Sure, it's deprecated and all
that, but it's more stable than remmina or xfreerdp. It has other, more
minor issues with the clipboard and mouse cursors, but for someone who
manages lots of Windows systems it's really the only way to do it since the
remmina/xfreerdp regressions occurred.

On Wed, Nov 7, 2012 at 10:16 AM, Martin Wildam 937...@bugs.launchpad.netwrote:

The quickest workaround for those who don't want to add other
repositories or use unstable remmina-versions might be:

 sudo apt-get install rdesktop

and you have the same effect - remmina then can transfer clipboard
again. Seems to have the same effect as tsclient (which is not existent
 any more in the repositories).

[Development Fix] The current remmina version (1.0.0-1ubuntu7) in

[Stable Fix] The patch for fixing this has been attached to this

   [Test Case]
   - Install Remmina
   - Connect to a random RDP server
   - Copy something on the client
   - Paste it now on the server

[Regression Potential] before Precise we had rdesktop as RDP client.

2012-05-23 Thread NTolerance
In addition to this one, there have been other regressions in Remmina
since Oneiric. Here are a couple more that would be great to see
resolved in an update to Precise:

https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/remmina/+bug/967376
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/remmina/+bug/944548

For Systems Administrators that use Ubuntu, not having a working RDP client is
a show-stopper. For now I've reverted to the Oneiric version of Remmina using
apt-pinning.

[Bug 879047] Re: Child windows invisible in Unity scale mode

So I've found out what's special about these windows. They're smaller.
Windows from the same application that are sized smaller disappear from
the scale plugin launched by Unity.

On a lower-resolution screen I can set the spacing setting for the
scale plugin in CCSM to 2-3 times the default and I can work around the
issue. But on a higher-resolution screen such as 1920x1200, maxing out
the value to 250 doesn't help.

[Bug 879047] [NEW] Child windows invisible in Unity scale mode

2011-10-20 Thread NTolerance
Public bug reported:

The scale plugin called by Unity does not render child windows of
applications such as Firefox, Pidgin, and Empathy after the child window
is minimized. It is impossible to use the Unity launcher to manage
these types of applications when minimized.

Steps to reproduce:

1. Open Firefox, select Tools - Downloads from the menu. This will spawn
the Downloads child window.
2. Minimize the Downloads window.
3. Double left-click the Firefox launcher at left.
4. Main Firefox window will render when the scale plugin is activated, but
the child window is invisible (screenshot attached).

Other observations:

This doesn't affect multiple windows of the same application - e.g. two
Chrome browser windows.

You can left-click in the area of the scale mode where the child window
should be to restore it.

[Bug 792849] Re: Lenovo ThinkPad T420 random hardlocks with Sandy Bridge graphics

2011-07-03 Thread NTolerance
Stability has been flawless with this kernel from the kernel PPA:

3.0.0-999-generic #201106081005 SMP Wed Jun 8 10:09:57 UTC 2011 x86_64
x86_64 x86_64 GNU/Linux

I'm also running a slighly outdated set of packages from the xorg-edgers PPA.
I enabled the PPA to get some necessary stuff, but then disabled it once I
reached stability, which I have. I've attached a list of my installed xorg
packages for reference.

Any ideas for work-arounds?

[Bug 792849] Re: Lenovo ThinkPad T420 random hardlocks with Sandy Bridge graphics

2011-06-13 Thread NTolerance
Yeah, after I created this bug report I ran into some issues with the
kernel I was running at the time and now I'm running Linux 3.0!

3.0.0-999-generic #201106081005

This build has not locked up on me in at least 4 full days of use. Keep in
mind that I did go several days on the last kernel without lockups. I'm going
to continue to test and I'll update this report with my findings.

[Bug 792849] [NEW] Lenovo ThinkPad T420 random hardlocks with Sandy Bridge graphics

2011-06-04 Thread NTolerance
Public bug reported:

I would experience 1-2 hardlocks per day when running 11.04 on my T420.
System was completely unresponsive and required a hard reset. I kept an
eye on syslog and Xorg.0.log, but not once did I ever get any messages
during the time of the lockup. I was not able to find a correlation
between any particular type of usage, nor could I reproduce the problem
other than just using the system for a full day.

With little information to go on other than reports of incomplete
support for Intel Sandy Bridge graphics in 11.04, I started
experimenting with newer packages. After more than a week of testing,
the stability of my system has greatly improved after installing the
xorg-edgers PPA and the following kernel:

http://kernel.ubuntu.com/~kernel-ppa/mainline/drm-intel-next-
proposed/current/

I apologize for the incompleteness of this report, but I just wanted to make a
record of what works and what doesn't work for the T420 on Ubuntu 11.04.

[Bug 764574] Re: Maximized window overlaps unity launcher when compiz setting launcher_hide_mode is set to Never

2011-04-28 Thread NTolerance
Yesterday I upgraded from 10.10 to 11.04. Technically 11.04 was beta at
that time, but there really haven't been any package updates since then,
so I pretty much went from Maverick to Natty final.

When I did have the issue I was testing from a live USB using 11.04 beta
2. Obviously since I was running from USB I had only the packages
included with beta 2 and none of the updates after it was released.

From a video standpoint it should be noted that I'm using Intel
Arrandale integrated graphics. As discussed, Natty puts the Unity
launcher on the leftmost monitor by default, and obviously this is not
ideal for approximately half of dual monitor users. Anyways, to move
the launcher to the right I used this xrandr command:

xrandr --output DP1 --primary

[Bug 764574] Re: Maximized window overlaps unity launcher when compiz setting launcher_hide_mode is set to Never

2011-04-18 Thread NTolerance
I'm able to reproduce this behavior on Natty beta 2. In my case the
right monitor must be set to primary, as my desk has far more space on
the right, so the larger monitor goes there.

We can't unconditionally put the Unity launcher on the left. Supporting
never hide for the launcher on the right monitor makes Unity usable
for what is likely 50% of multi-monitor users.

[Bug 303595] Re: Gsynaptics loses settings on resume

2010-04-15 Thread NTolerance
It's cool to see that my script has continued to be useful to some, but
as pointed out earlier it does have a major limitation in that if you're
not on tty7 the script won't work. I've attached a new script which
might be a small improvement, but it's completely untested. It's based
on my assumption that in the output of the who command, the (:0)
denotes DISPLAY 0, which should be the logged-in X11 user.

How this will interact with multiple X11 users on DISPLAY 0 (Gnome
switch user feature?), I have no idea. Since I no longer own the
troublesome laptop in question, I haven't needed this script, but if
anyone wants to test this new script I'd like to know if it works.

[Bug 350327] Re: vinagre connects but appears that I cannot start anything on remote desktop

2009-11-07 Thread NTolerance
it's a bit easier to work around this bug because the version of vino
included with Karmic has the xdamage disable gconf key. Run gconf-
editor and enable the checkbox for this key:

/desktop/gnome/remote_access/disable_xdamage

I'm sure this has some negative impact on already slow VNC performance.
To what extent, I don't know.

[Bug 428893] Re: eeePC 900A will not resume wifi connection after being disable with Fn+F2

2009-11-02 Thread NTolerance
*** This bug is a duplicate of bug 351166 ***
https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/351166

I'd like to have the duplicate status of this bug reviewed. With my
900A running Ubuntu 9.10 I get the same behavior as the reporter of this
bug.

I can successfully turn off the wireless by pressing the wireless switch
function key. The blue wireless LED goes out and Network Manager
disconnects.

Problem is, I can't turn the wireless back on. If I hit the function
key again the blue LED comes back on, but Network Manager can't find the
interface and it doesn't show up in ifconfig.

If I try to manually bring up the wlan0 interface with ifconfig I get
this error:

sudo ifconfig wlan0 up
SIOCSIFFLAGS: Input/output error

Here's some dmesg output:

ath5k phy0: failed to wakeup the MAC Chip
ath5k phy0: can't reset hardware (-5)

This behavior is different from that of Ubuntu 9.04 (wireless switch
does nothing - will not turn of wireless radio) and that of the bug
report that is linked to this one as a duplicate.

[Bug 447695] [NEW] Nautilus cannot write to shared Vista/Win7 folders with desktop.ini file

2009-10-09 Thread NTolerance
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: nautilus

Expectation: To be able to share a folder on a Vista/Win7 PC and have
full read/write access to that folder from a Ubuntu PC via the Nautilus
file manager.

Actual result: Nautilus cannot gain write access to shared Vista/Win7
folders that contain a desktop.ini file.

Steps to reproduce:

1. Right-click a newly created folder on a Vista/Win7 PC and select Share
with.
2. Use the following dialog to grant network users write access to the folder.
At this stage the folder is empty and Nautilus can successfully write to the
folder.
3. Right-click the same Vista/Win7 folder and navigate to the Customize tab.
4. From the Optimize this folder... drop-down menu pick any of the available
options. This will add a Windows system file called desktop.ini to the
folder.
5. Go to a Ubuntu 9.04 PC and browse to the Vista/Win7 PC using the Network
option in the Places menu in Nautilus.
6. Double-click the Vista/Win7 folder you shared to mount it.
7. Attempt to create a new folder or file within the shared folder. Access
will be denied.

Interesting notes:

If you go to the ~/.gvfs path via command line and browse to the same
mounted network share you will have write access via command line.

This same issue occurs with the smb4k program in KDE4, but not the
built-in Samba server browser in Konqueror.

Newly-created shared folders on a Vista/Win7 PC that do not contain a
desktop.ini file can be successfully written to with Nautilus.

ProblemType: Bug
Architecture: amd64
DistroRelease: Ubuntu 9.04

[Bug 385974] Re: rdesktop has black cursor instead of white cursor

2009-09-07 Thread NTolerance
See this ubuntuforums post for a partial workaround I found:

Note that it fixes the default Aero pointer, but the text input and
other context cursors are still black.

[Bug 385974] Re: rdesktop has black cursor instead of white cursor

2009-08-22 Thread NTolerance
I can reproduce this bug on Jaunty while connecting to Windows 7. The
default Aero cursor on Windows 7 shows the proper white color but has
a very bad lag to it. The solution to this problem is to change the
cursor theme to none, which fixes the lag but the cursor color turns
black even though it's supposed to be white.

[Bug 238799] Re: policykit not available over Vnc sessions

2009-04-29 Thread NTolerance
Just attempted sudopod's fix on an Intrepid system. After restarting
gdm and logging in via NX Nomachine the unlock button in the Users
Settings applet is now available. Upon clicking it, I get an error
message that says Could not authenticate - An unexpected error has
occurred.

I don't know how to run the Users Settings applet from a terminal to
get more information.

I have used something very similar to Wesley's fix with success. The
only difference is that the file I created with the aforementioned
settings is named /etc/modprobe.d/options

Two-finger tap/scroll still works fine post-fix and the settings seem to
survive a reboot.

[Bug 207072] Re: nautilus does not display samba shares for machines inside an ADS network.

Works well on my network too. I get prompted for credentials as soon as

works now in conjunction with the GNOME keyring, allowing me to
automatically mount shares within shell scripts. Thanks!

2009-01-26 Thread NTolerance
I can reproduce the connect to server GUI issue. Steps:

1. Click on Places menu and select Connect to Server
2. From Service Type dropdown list select Windows Share
3. Type server name in Server field
4. Press connect

At this point you will get the error described above. Expected behavior
might be to instead prompt for authentication and then display a list of
shares such as what Nautilus now does when you browse via the Network
option in the Places panel.

[Bug 207072] Re: nautilus does not display samba shares for machines inside an ADS network.

2009-01-26 Thread NTolerance
While the new version works well with my Windows-hosted shares, Samba
shares on Linux systems have an issue if restrict anonymous = 2 or
browseable = no is set in /etc/samba/smb.conf. In this event clicking
on the Samba server does not prompt for authentication and no shares are
displayed because the Samba server is set to only display shares if the
user has authenticated.

[Bug 303595] Re: Gsynaptics loses settings on resume

2009-01-25 Thread NTolerance
Can also reproduce this on Intrepid. GSynaptics is pretty much required
for my Dell Studio 15n and its Alps touchpad. Without GSynaptics the
touchpad is too slow to be usable. I don't see any reason why
GSynaptics shouldn't be installed by default on any laptop. Why
wouldn't a user want to configure their touchpad separate from their
mouse?

Can anyone show me the correct way to edit the resume scripts to get
this to work automagically?

[Bug 207072] Re: nautilus does not display samba shares for machines inside an ADS network.

2008-07-31 Thread NTolerance
This bug is more severe than the title implies. This affects not only
Active Directory networks but also any standalone Windows XP (possibly
all Windows versions) machines that share files with authentication
turned on. By default, Windows XP shares are configured in simple file
sharing mode which has no authentication. If you need write access to
your shares and leave the default simple file sharing mode enabled
(which it seems most everyone does), then any computer on your network
can access and delete all the files in your share. It may be thought of
as a bit overkill to require authentication on a small LAN that is in
your control, but consider all the laptops that are set up with
unprotected shares and then are taken to a public network such as at a
coffee shop.
