[Bug 910940] Re: Please convert package to Multiarch (to be used with dosbox)

2012-09-26 Thread NY00123
A check within the Ubuntu Package archive shows that libsdl-sound1.2 has
been converted to Multiarch on Ubuntu 12.10.

Since I am not running 12.10 for x86_64 at the moment, it would worth if
someone tests this. The aforementioned test with DOSBox can be repeated,
applying the following steps:

1. Install DOSBox, x86_64 architecture: sudo apt-get install dosbox
2. Remove DOSBox, but not the dependencies: sudo apt-get remove dosbox
3. Attempt to install DOSBox, i386 arch: sudo apt-get install dosbox:i386

Assuming all relevant dependencies have been converted to Multiarch, no
package should get removed on step 3.

P.S. As of 12.10, the libsmpeg0 package (which has also been converted
to Multiarch) is not a dependency of libsdl-sound1.2.

[Bug 980663] Re: Compiz won't start if "unredirect fullscreen windows" is enabled

2012-05-24 Thread NY00123
I may confirm the bug, although the behavior is a bit inconsistent.

Here is what I've had for today. "Unredirect fullscreen windows" has been
toggled on during that time.
- On the first boot for today, Unity with Compiz has started as expected.
- Upon a reboot (applied after a kernel update), it hasn't. A crash dialog has
appeared ~20 seconds after loading the desktop (without Unity and Compiz). I've
chosen to relaunch Compiz in the dialog, resulting in Unity and Compiz loading
and working.

[Bug 967091] Re: Wrong tint with Nvidia after upgrading to 11.2

2012-04-07 Thread NY00123
I confirm this too now. What's strange is that I've noticed this only
today, less than a hour from now.

However, this may be a bit irrelevant as I'm using an unofficial NVidia
driver, version 295.33-0ubuntu1~oneiric~xup1 (version of nvidia-current
and nvidia-settings packages).

I'd still add these details, though:
- I'm running Ubuntu 11.10 for the x86_64 arch.
- Version of flashplugin-installer (and flashplugin-downloader:i386?):
11.2.202.228ubuntu0.11.10.1
- Graphics card's chip is GTX 460.

[Bug 910940] Re: Please convert package to Multiarch (to be used with dosbox)

2012-03-18 Thread NY00123
libsdl-sound1.2 has been updated on Debian (unstable):
http://packages.debian.org/changelogs/pool/main/s/sdl-sound1.2/sdl-sound1.2_1.0.3-5/changelog

Some relevant notes:
- Debian package is now built for multiarch.
- playsound and playsound_simple have been stripped.

[Bug 910940] [NEW] Please convert package to Multiarch (to be used with dosbox)

2012-01-02 Thread NY00123
Public bug reported:

While not a portion of ia32-libs on Ubuntu 11.10, the package is a dependency
of DOSBox (installable via the dosbox package).
Here is why would one like multiarch support: Some users may prefer to install
the dosbox:i386 package, even on an x86_64 OS installation. The reason being
that, with the right settings, DOS games can be run with a better performace on
the i386 variant of DOSBox, taking advantage of i386 specific code.

Most of DOSBox' dependencies have already been converted to Multiarch. Here is
a way of finding out which aren't yet fully converted:
1. Install DOSBox, x86_64 architecture: sudo apt-get install dosbox
2. Remove DOSBox, but not the dependencies: sudo apt-get remove dosbox
3. Attempt to install DOSBox, i386 arch: sudo apt-get install dosbox:i386

That way, we can ensure that no potential collision is missed. Here is
the important portion of the third step's output (as of now):

"
The following packages will be REMOVED:
  libsdl-sound1.2 libsmpeg0
"

So, once libsdl-sound1.2 and libsmpeg0 are converted to Multiarch, dosbox:i386
should (theoretically) be installable, with no conflicts with the respective
x86_64 variants of all libraries.
The report itself is only relevant to libsdl-sound1.2, though. (libsmpeg0 is in
ia32-libs, which might make a difference.)

One minor potential issue: libsdl-sound1.2 comes with two executables
installed to /usr/bin: playsound and playsound_simple). It could be that
these executables should be split into their own respective package, if
Multiarch is desired.

I confirm. Using the Debian version, a short test program (a simple main
function doing nothing) could actually be compiled. In contrary to the
current Ubuntu package, it has got 64-bit libgcc and other missing
files, although a 64-bit g++ compiler isn't there.

[Bug 155263] Re: Fullscreen applications become windowed

2009-06-12 Thread NY00123
I'm not sure bug 216322 is a duplicate of this.
Do SDL applications switch to windowed mode almost immediately (as described in
216322) and then stay windowed, or it takes, say, more than 10 seconds?

There may be a common source to both bugs, though.

[Bug 368523] [NEW] Buffer fragments (-B2,8) cause 40-50 % CPU usage.

2009-04-28 Thread NY00123
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: timidity

While buffer fragments (-B2,8 command line argument) have been disabled before
in /etc/default/timidity,
they aren't in the /etc/init.d/timidity sequencer script.

As a result, when an app like DOSBox uses the sequencer, then it (the
sequencer) consumes 40-50 % CPU usage.

For now, what can be done is to edit /etc/init.d/timidity (with root privileges)
and change this:
TIM_ALSASEQPARAMS="-B2,8"
into this:
TIM_ALSASEQPARAMS=

[Bug 210472] Re: Timidity daemon doesn't play nice with pulse audio

2009-04-27 Thread NY00123
Looks like the -B2,8 argument may cause a 40% CPU usage. Could be another cause
for the issue.
If it's quite common, then I guess it can simply be removed from the
/etc/init.d/timidity script.
People may prefer it to not be run as root, although that's a bit different
topic.

[Bug 281475] Re: OpenAL Soft may trigger a hang and require PulseAudio restart, using ALSA for output and the pulse plugin.

2008-12-08 Thread NY00123
I've tried setting the ALSA device in ~/.alsoftrc to pulse, with no
success.

Maybe I should noted that I've made a few changes for 6-channels setup.
However, even after renaming ~/.pulse and ~/.alsoftrc to other names, and
restarting PulseAudio,
the hang could still be reproduced.

* It should be noted that when I told OpenAL Soft to use OSS, I actually used a
wrapper like aoss or padsp.
As a side note, aoss may do the job if you want surround sound.
It may not work with 32-bit applications on 64-bit Ubuntu, though (as libaoss
is missing from ia32-libs).

[Bug 154883] Re: Unusable libsdl_mixer as a part of ia32-libs or ia32-libs-sdl

2008-11-08 Thread NY00123

Output from `ldd /usr/lib32/libSDL_mixer-1.2.so.0 | grep not`:
libmikmod.so.2 => not found
libvorbisfile.so.3 => not found

[Bug 281475] [NEW] OpenAL Soft may trigger a hang and require PulseAudio restart, using ALSA for output and the pulse plugin.

2008-10-10 Thread NY00123
Public bug reported:

In case an OpenAL application is being run and the following conditions are met:
* OpenAL Soft is configured to use an ALSA device.
* Using this device, the output is expected to get redirected to PulseAudio.

On quit, the application may hang, at least for about 30 seconds.
In that case, OpenAL wouldn't be shut down probably, and a restart to
PulseAudio will be required.

* Tested with the following lesson1 sample:
http://www.devmaster.net/articles/openal-tutorials/lesson1.php
* Direct link to Linux sample source:
http://www.devmaster.net/articles/openal-tutorials/lesson1_linux.tar.bz2

* Compilation:
1. Type "make". All relevant development files and tools are required (OpenAL,
GNU g++, GNU Make)
2. Workaround to a possible error regarding undefined symbols (after typing
make):
g++ -o lesson1 main.o -lopenal -lalut

Now try typing ./lesson1 and press 'q' to quit; Multiple times.
At some point, the hang explained above would occur.

A few notes to add:
* The hang is not reproduced when OpenAL Soft is configured to use an OSS
device.
* It is also not reproduced when OpenAL Soft is configured to use the ALSA
device hw:0.
* It's reproduced with the default and pulse ALSA devices.

[Bug 211698] Re: ia32-libs missing SDL with ESD backend for PulseAudio; And many other libraries too as it seems like.

2008-08-02 Thread NY00123
Another update:

It looks like I was wrong, regarding Epiphany and the sound with the PA backend.
In the past I had stuttering sound in Epiphany while using the PA backend.
Without being even aware of that, it disappeared thanks to a workaround
suggested in some forum topic;
It might be this:
http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?p=4928900

In the file ~/.pulse/daemon.conf (possibly based on
/etc/pulse/daemon.conf), I've added the following lines:

default-fragments = 8
default-fragment-size-msec = 5

More lines can be added. For instance, as mentioned in the above topic
(and without the fragments params):

high-priority = yes
nice-level = -11
realtime-scheduling = yes
realtime-priority = 5
resample-method = speex-float-0

[Bug 211698] Re: ia32-libs missing SDL with ESD backend for PulseAudio; And many other libraries too as it seems like.

2008-07-25 Thread NY00123
A few updates:

* In the past, it looked like the ESD backend of SDL worked better than
the PulseAudio backend in a few cases, like in the Epiphany game. Now
the PA backend seems to work fine with that game.

* Using the ESD backend, there have been a few times when I've just heard loud
"pink noise" (term mentioned in speaker-test --help).
I remember it has happened with some application talking to ESD directly and
not SDL as well (not sure which app).
It could be related to the following bug, although I'm not fully sure about
that:
http://www.pulseaudio.org/ticket/322

* Finally, EDuke32 is now available as a 64-bit binary, so all of this
stuff can be considered irrelevant to EDuke32.

It may still be useful to replace the 32-bit SDL sound backend, and
maybe with the PulseAudio backend and not ESD, since it at least works
probably with Epiphany this time.

[Bug 216322] Re: SDL applications auto-leave fullscreen if set to native 1280x1024 or higher resolution and Compiz is enabled.

2008-07-05 Thread NY00123
Regarding a recent post in bug report #157759, I agree with Adam that it isn't
a duplicate of bug #216322.
#216322 - The app auto-switches to windowed mode if it's fullscreen and uses
the desktop resolution.
#157759 - If I understand that correctly, the app goes windowed after some time
and the controls may not respond. I remember I've got that as well a few times
in the past.

On a side-note, it looks like Corsaire's report in the Bug #157759 page
actually refers to this bug.
Indeed, it may be confusing and people may not notice the difference between
the different but similar symptoms.

[Bug 216322] Re: SDL applications auto-leave fullscreen if set to native 1280x1024 resolution and Compiz is enabled.

2008-06-13 Thread NY00123
I've selected System -> Preferences -> Advanced Desktop Effects Settings
(I think it's available from a compizconfig-backend-gconf package; Otherwise, I
guess e.g. gconf-editor can be used),
selected "General Options" and then unchecked "Unredirect Fullscreen Windows".
Afterwards I've re-enabled Compiz via System -> Preferences -> Appearance ->
Visual Effects.
With EDuke32, icculus.org/duke3d and DOSBox, all running at the desktop
resolution of 1280x1024, problem solved!

What I guess is that, assuming that option was enabled from the moment I
install Hardy, it should maybe be disabled by default.
I say "maybe" because there could be other issues which I'm currently not aware
of.

I could be wrong, but I guess that what this feature means is to render
fullscreen apps on top of Compiz.
When it's disabled, OpenGL apps may bypass Compiz, which seems to work better
for now. Again, I could be wrong here.

[Bug 216322] Re: SDL applications auto-leave fullscreen if set to native 1280x1024 resolution and Compiz is enabled.

2008-06-12 Thread NY00123
I've changed the desktop resolution to 1024x768 (without rebooting or
restarting), and now I get the same problem with a resolution of 1024x768.
In addition, could be related although I'm not sure (tested on an EDuke32
snapshot from April 1st, but could happen in other applications as well):
* When I try to switch from e.g. 800x600 fullscreen (which eventually works) to
1024x768 fullscreen, I get again the effect of auto-switching to windowed mode,
but also get a white display inside the window (when it is windowed). - Happens
only with Compiz enabled.

[Bug 211698] Re: ia32-libs missing SDL with ESD backend for PulseAudio; And many other libraries too as it seems like.

2008-04-21 Thread NY00123
If you're talking about libsdl1.2debian-esd and its dependencies, then
it seems like its dependencies (libaudiofile0, libc6 , libdirectfb and
libesd-alsa0) are already provided by ia32-libs and libc6-i386. Well,
excluding the documentation and other kinds of stuff like that, of
course.

If you're talking about the libvorbis0a and libvorbisfile3 libraries though,
then libvorbisfile3 depends on libvorbis0a and libc6, while libvorbis0a depends
on libogg0 and libc6.
libogg0 is already provided by ia32-libs.
BTW, if the libvorbis* libraries are provided, they'd make e.g. recent
snapshots of the EDuke32 game work. I can give a link in case anybody asks.

[Bug 211698] Re: ia32-libs missing SDL with ESD backend for PulseAudio; And many other libraries too as it seems like.

2008-04-16 Thread NY00123
A TEMPORARY WORKAROUND FOR GETTING 32-BIT SDL TO USE ESD:

Before using that, I should probably give two warnings:
1. THE ALTERNATIVE SDL LIBRARY GETS EXTRACTED MANUALLY TO /usr/lib32. You won't
find it using dpkg or Synaptic.
2. On an update to ia32-libs (like a one made today), it'll probably get
overwritten by ia32-libs' SDL library with the ALSA backend. I've realized that
after a 32-bit SDL app has got almost no sound, and as expected, crashed on
quit. (That is if ALSA uses the "pulse" device and tries to wrap everything to
PulseAudio)

Anyway, the proposed solution is getlibs:
http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=474790

The command to install the 32-bit SDL library with an ESD backend (requires
root permissions):
getlibs -p libsdl1.2debian-esd

[Bug 203158] Re: libsdl1.2debian-pulseaudio must be installed as default by libsdl1.2debian

2008-04-14 Thread NY00123
After checking it with the Epiphany game, it seems like libsdl1.2debian-esd
should be the default and not pulseaudio, as it currently works better. This is
also what Fedora seems to use by default.
That should also be made with the SDL library in ia32-libs, which is currently
the one with the ALSA backend.

ok, maybe what I've reported here is some kind of a duplicate of this? (if
we're talking about SDL only)

[Bug 216322] [NEW] SDL applications auto-leave fullscreen if set to native 1280x1024 resolution and Compiz is enabled.

2008-04-12 Thread NY00123
Public bug reported:

After recent updates, a few of them are to Compiz-related packages, it seems
like SDL applications can't work probably with fullscreen mode in the native
resolution of 1280x1024.
What happens is that they simply switch to windowed mode. That doesn't happen
with lower resolutions if they're set from the beginning, nor when Compiz is
disabled.
Tested applications: DOSBox, EDuke32, JFShadowWarrior, my own (sort of) Snake
game.
I guess it would occur with (almost) all of the SDL applications, but tell if
someone wants a link to one of the above specific games, tell me.
DOSBox - No problem, apt-get install dosbox

[Bug 211698] [NEW] ia32-libs missing SDL with ESD backend for PulseAudio; And many other libraries too as it seems like.

2008-04-04 Thread NY00123
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: ia32-libs

The title says it. In the case of SDL, if someone has set ALSA to use the pulse
device, that means 32-bit SDL applications are expected to work without sound
and crash on quit (at least according to my experience with a few of them).
Now I know that it could be too late to add new libraries for Hardy, but if,
say, libvorbis and libvorbisfile can be added, that'd be one more improvement.
Anyway, a more general problem is that such requests may be done for every
single library available (e.g. libSDL-image, libSDL-sound, and in fact almost
everything missing); That makes me think that maybe, as long as we don't have
some kind of multi-arch support, we should (also) use names like:
lib32sdl1.2debian, lib32sdl1.2debian-all, lib32sdl1.2debian-esd, lib32vorbis0a,
etc (based on lib64 package names used in Mandriva).
Now I know that there are already a few packages like lib32asound2 and
lib32ncurses5.
If that's too much now for Hardy, maybe just the addition of a few libraries to
the existing ia32-libs can be made.

[Bug 207902] [NEW] On time set, "/sbin/hwclock returned 256"

[Bug 180478] Re: pulseaudio support, broken nspluginwrapper/flash

2008-03-13 Thread NY00123
On a side note (tested with a 64-app and SDL but may be related to the 32-bit
variants as well):
I've noticed that the sound in the Epiphany game (epiphany package) works
better with SDL->ESD than with SDL->PulseAudio;
Which means that maybe the ESD variant of SDL should be provided by default,
although there could be a game which works better with SDL->PulseAudio than
with SDL->ESD.

[Bug 180478] Re: pulseaudio support, broken nspluginwrapper/flash

2008-03-11 Thread NY00123
Regarding 32-bit SDL which William has mentioned in brackets, one
possibility is to add multiple packages like ia32-libs-sdl-alsa, ia32
-libs-sdl-pulseaudio and optionally make ia32-libs depend on at least
one of them (and e.g. the pulseaudio variant by default).

[Bug 154883] Re: Unusable libsdl_mixer as a part of ia32-libs or ia32-libs-sdl

2008-02-08 Thread NY00123
Great to hear that. Now, we may wait for the stable release of Hardy, or get an
alpha right now.
However, is that maybe possible to make the 32-bit SDL_mixer functional for
64-bit Gutsy users?
(via solution 2 or solution 3; 3 seems to be the better choice)
Technically SDL_mixer can also be removed from ia32-libs for now, as it's
unusable.

[Bug 154883] Unusable libsdl_mixer as a part of ia32-libs or ia32-libs-sdl

2007-10-20 Thread NY00123
Public bug reported:

In Ubuntu 7.10 (64-bit), ia32-libs* comes with libSDL_mixer (currently
/usr/lib32/libSDL_mixer-1.2.so.0.2.4 and the symlink libSDL_mixer-1.2.so.0).
However, it's unusable because it depends on the following unresolved
dependencies: libvorbisfile.so.3, libvorbis.so.0, libogg.so.0,
libsmpeg-0.4.so.0.

While it's not a new issue, maybe at least one of the following can be made:
1. Remove libSDL_mixer (I prefer to not).
2. Include the missing libraries.
3. Recompile SDL_mixer so it doesn't depend on those extra libs.

If someone chooses solution 3, maybe the same should be done with the
ordinary libsdl-mixer1.2 and libsdl-mixer1.2-dev packages (32-bit and
64-bit).

* In Ubuntu 7.04, the relevant package might be ia32-libs-sdl, but the
issue is the very same.
