Well, one consequence of using old versions in the name of stability is that sometimes they're actually more buggy than newer ones. :) This is one example. 2.25x scale looks perfect in Plasma as well (I used it for a long time) provided you use Wayland or set PLASMA_USE_QT_SCALING=1 on X11 due to Bug 356446. [Bug 1862467]
You're not wrong that there's a bug with the sizes of certain controls when you just change the font size or DPI. However this is because these controls are meant to be scaled using the Qt scaling system (which gets invoked by changing the global scale in the KScreen KCM) rather than scaling perfectly with the font size. What you're trying to do is bypass that system and set an *effective* scale factor using a totally different method to work around a bug in GTK apps, which is not something we explicitly support. That said, GTK apps should scale perfectly with integer scale factors (e.g. 2x) set from the kscreen KCM. They do for me with a 200% scale factor in Plasma 5.20. I was mistaken about that; PLASMA_USE_QT_SCALING=1 has no effect. [Bug 1862467]
Well there's your problem. :) Setting the font DPI to 192 is not the correct way to make scaling work. You should use the global scale setting in the Displays page, which automatically sets the DPI to 192 for you, but also does a bunch of extra stuff to make layouts not break. In newer versions of Plasma, the Fonts KCM has a warning telling you this if you try to perform scaling by only changing the font DPI. -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1862467 Title: Utilize More Horizontal During Font Adjustment To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/kdelibs/+bug/1862467/+subscriptions -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

(In reply to qik00yt from comment #59) > > But because the window manager > > does not > > Why ? Is there a reason it cant ? That's what's being discussed by various developers in the comment thread of this bug report. :) There are a variety of technical challenges to making work on both X11 and Wayland. On X11, the challenges relate to various mismatches between what X11 provides the window manager and what the window manager needs. On Wayland, it're more about needed functionality not having been merged into a protocol yet. However, at least some applications (and key > applications like Terminal, Synaptic, etc.) do it, which makes it a much > more acceptable experience than in KDE (speaking from memory here, but the > issue is still open, so...) For sure. Similar,y, some KDE applications already support this individually, such as Discover and Elisa. > 2. The fact that some applications do it means it is possible, and was > possible even with X11. X11 limitations don't come into play when the app itself does it. > 3. While this issue was opened against KWin, we users don't care where the > solution will land. If it can only be done on the toolkit level (which is > probably better than forcing each app/developer to implement it separately), > so be it. Indeed, that's exactly what Bug 415150 is tracking: having our app framework provide the feature automatically for all KDE apps, in the absence of the window manager doing it automatically. Of course time is limited, and here I am responding to comments in a bug report instead of writing code. ;) -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/335761 Title: Placement policy 'Remember' by default for all windows To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/kubuntu-default-settings/+bug/335761/+subscriptions -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

It was probably the same for Gnome back in 2009 > before I switched to KDE. It's nowhere near optimal, but it shows that the > information is (was) there. In fact, what you describe is the *lack* of this feature: if the window manager handled remembering window sizes and positions, then no window would ever fail to remember its size or position. But because the window manager does not, it's up to each app (or each toolkit that apps are built with) to implement the feature on its own, which is why it works for some apps but not others. We all want this feature, it's about figuring out how to do it. In general I think people with high DPI screens would prefer to use SVG icons and live with or report a small number of bugs with a small number of mid-rendered icons then live with 100% of all icons being pixelated and ugly. Perhaps making the SVG renderer default only for high DPi users of SVG-compatible icon themes would make everyone happy: high DPI users get nicer icons overall, while devs get more user eyeballs (and bug reports, and potential contributors) using the SVG renderer. Public bug reported: So I'm watching YouTube videos, and I have autoplay enabled, so when it gets to the end of one, it lingers for a moment then jumps right into another. While watching a video, the screensaver is inhibited, as it should be. Because most of these videos are considerably longer than my lock period. But during that jump, there's an instant where there isn't technically a video playing, and since I haven't touched the keyboard in a while, BAM, the screensaver springs into action. And I'm sitting here during the intro of the next video, listening to the theme and narrator, and going "Well that's interesting, is he leading with a black screen for some narrative reason?" until I bump the mouse and there's my lockscreen... In this situation, the end of the video-is-playing status should have a moment of holdoff before killing the screen, in case another video starts playing a few milliseconds later. Ubuntu 18.04 LTS, gnome-screensaver 3.6.1-8ubuntu3, Firefox 75.0. ** Affects: gnome-screensaver (Ubuntu) Importance: Undecided Status: New -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1873483 Title: Screensaver locks when advancing to YouTube's next autoplay video To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/gnome-screensaver/+bug/1873483/+subscriptions -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

I understand that it is frustrating, for sure. However, note that your reason for not using the official scaling system is bugginess, yet the alternative method you've chosen also has bugs (e.g. this one). Clearly these bugs are less severe than the ones you're avoiding. However it's at least important for those bugs keeping you from using the official system to be reported or else it can't improve to the point were it's adequate for your needs. If you feel the need to use a workaround in the meantime, I understand, but please file bugs on the issues that are preventing you from using the official system. Looking at the issues you mention: > Flameshot didn't work with the desktop scaling feature enabled, while it works > great at a 192 DPI. Sounds like a bug in Flameshot. Can you file it with the developer of that app? > Also, in my three 4K monitor setup, if I moved my mouse past the bottom edge > of the > bottom middle monitor, the whole desktop would scroll down as though that > desktop > had an additional 2160 pixels that shouldn't even be there. That has been discussed before and rejected, since that would represent a loss of functionality--a great deal of which *does* work in other viewers, and all of which works in Okular itself. [Bug 1859632]
Okular 1.0.3 on Kubuntu 17.04 A few years ago, Okular gained the ability to save annotations into PDF files: https://bugs.kde.org/show_bug.cgi?id=151614 For the most part, it works great! There is one problem: custom/image stamp annotations are not saved in a way that can be printed or that other PDF readers can see. I tested many. STEPS TO REPRODUCE: 1. Open a PDF file with Okular 2. Define a custom image stamp (Configure Okular > Annotations > Add > Stamp > enter a valid path to an image in the combobox) 3. Stamp your image into the document 4. File > Save As > Save the document somewhere 5. Use Okular to print the document or open it document in a non-Okular PDF viewer EXPECTED RESULTS: The image stamp is visible when the document is printed or viewed in a non-Okular PDF viewer ACTUAL RESULTS: The image stamp annotation is not visible In any of the non-Okular PDF viewers I had available: Adobe Acrobat, Foxit Reader, SumatraPDF, the PDF readers built into Firefox and Microsoft Edge. Acrobat reader can see and manipulate the *outlines* of the annotations, but the outlines have no images in them. ADDITIONAL INFORMATION: This affects a very common use case: wanting to add an image of the user's signature to a PDF document to sign it and send it back to them. When they open the file, the signature will not be visible unless they open it with Okular (unlikely). -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Kubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to okular in Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1859632 Title: Stamp annotations cannot be printed to pdf or "flattened" To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/okular/+bug/1859632/+subscriptions -- kubuntu-bugs mailing list kubuntu-b...@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/kubuntu-bugs

[Bug 111032]
Git commit 7bd7f38400b953a988a2cc942a518339e0b094a8 by Nate Graham. Committed on 23/12/2018 at 04:14. Pushed by ngraham into branch 'master'. [KRun] when asked to open link in external browser, fall back to mimeapps.list if nothing is set in kdeglobals Summary: Right now, when KRun is invoked to open an `http` or `https` link in a browser, it checks the `BrowserApplication` key in `~/.config/kdeglobals`. If nothing is set there (which is the default), then it introspects the link and figures out for itself what app to open, which is slow and can cause problems with certain links (see CCBUGs below). This patch improves the browser discovery logic by additionally looking for a default browser in `~/.config/mimeapps.list`, which is the XDG file and it's where browsers set themselves as the default. So if there is a default browser set in there, KRun will consume that information immediately instead of doing the time-consuming and possibly error-inducing link introspection round-trip. Related: bug 347870 Test Plan: 1. Open System Settings > Applications > Default Applications > Browser and click "In an application based on the contents of the url" (which is the default setting, but you might have changed it) 2. Set `BrowserApplication[$e]=` in `~/.config/kdeglobals` 3. Ensure that `~/.config/mimeapps/list` has a default browser set 4. [Bug 111032]
Following supportive comments on the mailing list, I'm preparing a patch to remove the "in an application based on the contents of the url" feature, which is confusing, imposes a speed penalty, and apparently doesn't work for certain URLs. The patch is fairly simple but there's a conceptual issue: what's a good default setting now? Right now the default setting is "let KIO figure it out", and presumably this should move to "default to browser X". But what is Browser X? Should we really be in the business of picking preference orders for 3rd-party software? What about if 1st-party software is also installed, like Falkon or Konqueror? Should we leave it up to distros to populate ~/.config/kdeglobals with a sensible default for BrowserApplication[$e]? Any ideas or guidance would be appreciated. -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/111032 Title: Usability glitches in default browser selection To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/kdeadmin/+bug/111032/+subscriptions -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
[Bug 111032]
Ok, what I think makes sense is to fall back on KIO when there are no web browsers installed (unlikely). When one is manually installed, it will usually set itself as the default--but in ~/.config/mimeapps.list, not ~/.config/kdeglobals. Which is fine, since changing the browser setting in componentchooser updates mimeapps.list too so that don't get out of sync. It will be up to distros to pre-populate these files with their desired default browsers, but that's already the case, so no regressions should be introduced. I'll also change the componentchooser KCM so that the default browser shown in the combobox is identical to what's listed in ~/.config/mimeapps.list if there's nothing in kdeglobals. [Bug 1784161] Re: Mouse inoperative in other apps while Shotwell is uploading to Flickr
Adding some detail here: Switching back to xorg reproduces the bug 100%. I can click on the launcher, it seems to be the only thing that'll receive my clicks while the bug is active, but new apps launched while the bug is active are also unable to see mouse clicks. [Bug 1784161] [NEW] Mouse inoperative in other apps while Shotwell is uploading to Flickr
Public bug reported: I'm using Shotwell to Publish (ctrl+shift+P) photos to Flickr. Some of these uploads take quite a while, so I'd like to do other things while they're running. If I alt-tab over to Firefox or Slack or whatever, my mouse works normally, but if I alt-tab back to Shotwell to peek if the upload has completed yet, and then alt-tab over to another app again, now my mouse doesn't work. Pointer moves, yes. Doesn't produce mouse-over events, doesn't click, doesn't scroll. As soon as the upload completes in Shotwell, the mouse works normally again. I popped into freenode/#ubuntu IRC and they suggested trying Wayland. This behavior does not occur in Wayland, so it was suggested that I report it here under xorg. I'm running Ubuntu 18.04 LTS. ** Affects: xorg (Ubuntu) Importance: Undecided Status: New -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1784161 Title: Mouse inoperative in other apps while Shotwell is uploading to Flickr To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/xorg/+bug/1784161/+subscriptions -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
