[Bug 1202754] Re: update-manager crashed with SystemExit in exit(): 0
I believe I have solved my problem! After some research, I made the following change: -- Preferences -- Default Applications for LXSession -- Autostart CHECKED the box for PolicyKit Authentication Agent Closed and rebooted. Now the software updater runs perfectly! Something apparently changed in the way authentication is done/or unchecked PolicyKit during a prior update. I don't remember doing anything in that area at all myself. Hope this will be a clue to some resolution for others! Ubuntu 9.10 w/nvidia driver seems to work OK. So failure is occurring for me on 8.04.4 and Lucid alpha 2. Sequence of events is: 1. Fresh install of OS. 2. Use System Administration Update Manager to install all current updates. 3. Re-boot. 4. Use System Administration Hardware Drivers to install recommended Nvidia graphics driver. 5. Re-boot. 6. [Bug 428920] Re: Karmic boot hangs before login
For what it is worth, I had a similar problem after an 'apt-get upgrade' a few days ago. I booted, saw the B/W ubuntu logo, and then the screen changed to a text mode, showed some services starting, and then started flickering incessantly. I was unable to change to a different VT and log in (it was missing key inputs - presumably because it was switching back to VT7 for X). Unlike the others here, my Xlog.0 file indicated that the (restricted) Nvidia drivers weren't able to load. I was able to boot using an older kernel selection from Grub. I was also able to boot using the Beta .iso image on an USB stick. It seems that for some reason, the nvidia drivers weren't rebuilt when the kernel was upgraded during the 'apt-get upgrade' I ran yesterday to move from Alpha 6 to Beta 1. A 'sudo dpkg-reconfigure nvidia-185 -kernel-source' ended up fixing the problem for me. I only mention it as it seems that many of the problem systems are using Nvidia chipsets. At this point, I'm assuming it was a one time glitch and don't plan to file a bug report. Please let me know if I should do otherwise. -- Karmic boot hangs before login https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/428920 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 375545] Re: [i945] shuttle X50/intel 945 No outputs definitely connected (needs intel 2.7.1)
I had the same problem, and again it wasn't fixed by the 2.7.1 driver. I had my monitor connected to a KVM switch which was connected to the video output on my machine. I discovered (by accident) that when the monitor was connected directly to the machine the problem went away. The problem turned out to be the cable from the KVM to the machine. When I replaced it everything worked fine. What's weird is that the old cable worked fine for everything else, and once I had started up, I could replace the new cable with the old and everything continued to work fine. Anyway, I'm now back in business. -- [i945] shuttle X50/intel 945 No outputs definitely connected (needs intel 2.7.1) https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/375545 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 161122] Re: nm_applet prompts for password on startup
The network manager applet nm-applet that you use to connect to the wireless network stores the WEP/WPA keys with the gnome keyring manager, which you can access in System - Administration - Keyring manager. When a keyring is first created by the nm-applet, you have to supply a password, which is required every time the keyring is accessed while locked (which is the case when you reboot). What you can do is delete the keyring, reboot, re-enter the WPA passphrase, recreate the keyring using your login password as the password, then use some funny tricks available online to make it so you aren't prompted for a password anymore. Grapeshot made a nice post here on how to do that: http://forums.fedoraforum.org/showthread.php?p=920344 -- nm_applet prompts for password on startup https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/161122 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is the bug contact for Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

Saying something like your system (7.10 beta) is up to date or your system (7.10 final release) is up to date would not necessarily work because as far as I know, beta and release candidates are just snapshots of packages. [Bug 112132] Re: failed to set xfer mode error.
On my system I have a couple of hard drives attached to IDE to SATA adapters (specifically, SYBA ADSAIDE-3811 adapters). IDE Hard drive - sata adapter - sata port on motherboard. With Ubuntu 7.10 and 7.04 the drives with the adapters don't work and I get this output from dmesg that is attached with this post, which has those same failed to set xfermode (err_mask=0x40) errors. irqpoll does not work. I tried booting the system with an old version of Knoppix (Linux Knoppix 2.6.17 #4 SMP PREEMPT Wed May 10 2006 i686 GNU/Linux) and the drives work fine with no errors. ** Attachment added: DMESG output corresponding to Ned's post http://launchpadlibrarian.net/10074365/NED_dmesg_out.txt -- failed to set xfer mode error. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/112132 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is the bug contact for Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
[Bug 135187] Canon Pixma iP4300 prints very dark
Public bug reported: I installed the driver (v 2.7) from Canon's web site, as well as Gutenprint 5.0.1 (initially). On testing, the test page from the CUPS (1.3) web interface looked OK on the Canon driver, but very dark on the Gutenprint driver. So after hearing about Pixma-related fixes in Gutenprint 5.1.3 I compiled and installed that version. The behavior is the same as the 5.0.1 package, at least for the test page. Unfortunately, I can't use the Canon driver from Windows clients (for unknown reasons, jobs silently disappear). So I'd like the Gutenprint driver to work. I have tried to adjust the gamma and brightness in applications (for instance Gimp2) but that doesn't seem to be able to fix the problem. ** Affects: gutenprint (Ubuntu) Importance: Undecided Status: New -- Canon Pixma iP4300 prints very dark https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/135187 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is the bug contact for Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
