month or so when everything is fine then after an update back to the above
problem. Currently it's the worst it's ever been after an update installing
kernel 3.13.0-35 On startup i have a script that dumps the output of dmesg to a
file named by date and time could upload one from a previous state when all was
working, have noticed odd things re ACPI in syslog eg.

[Bug 1202754] Re: update-manager crashed with SystemExit in exit(): 0

2014-03-21 Thread Ned Hedrick
In my case, updates don't install, the update application either crashes
(which I assume is happening since I am sent here) and/or closes. This
happens daily, and no updates are installed.

Running Trusty Tahr, last updated 17Mar2014 (unable to update since).

[Bug 1202754] Re: update-manager crashed with SystemExit in exit(): 0

2014-03-21 Thread Ned Hedrick
I believe I have solved my problem! After some research, I made the
following change:

-- Preferences -- Default Applications for LXSession -- Autostart

CHECKED the box for PolicyKit Authentication Agent

Closed and rebooted.

Now the software updater runs perfectly! Something apparently changed
in the way authentication is done/or unchecked PolicyKit during a prior
update. I don't remember doing anything in that area at all myself.

Hope this will be a clue to some resolution for others!

I now don't have the opportunity to enter the password at all. It
simply says You are not authorized to perform this action, and the
updater crashes and takes me back here again.

Hey jaymac,

Hi, thanks for reporting this issue during the development period of
Ubuntu.

I notice there's not been further comments to the bug report since the
release came out, would you mind updating us on the status of it in the
release?

Are you still able to reproduce the issue? If not, do you think the bug
report can be closed, or do you think we should continue tracking it?

[Bug 841416] Re: Netbook hangs during log-off or restart.

2011-10-18 Thread Ned Hedrick
I have same problem, but only with restart. Restart hangs and only
recourse is to power off and power on to restart. This is on a Gateway
netbook LT2802u.

[Bug 868757] Re: random mouse pointer freezes

2011-10-11 Thread Ned Hedrick
At first, I thought the only recourse was to power off the machine and
restart. However, further testing has proven I am able to use CTL-ALT-
DEL to initiate logoff, then the mouse works fine when I log back in.

[Bug 816875] Re: Can't move mouse anymore

2011-10-07 Thread Ned Hedrick
Similar problem here. Mouse (touchpad) on Gateway netbook LT2802U
freezes and will not respond at all. No cursor movement and both
buttons have no effect. Seems most likely to happen during/after typing
on the keyboard. Tab keys still work but navigation is difficult at
best without mouse.

[Bug 476798] Re: No Display

2010-02-06 Thread Ned Hedrick
Ubuntu 9.10 w/nvidia driver seems to work OK. So failure is occurring
for me on 8.04.4 and Lucid alpha 2.

Sequence of events is:
1. Fresh install of OS.
2. Use System Administration Update Manager to install all current updates.
3. Re-boot.
4. Use System Administration Hardware Drivers to install recommended Nvidia
graphics driver.
5. Re-boot.
6. After entering sign-on info, screen goes black and system won't respond to
anything.

Same problem here. HP CQ50-215NR laptop w/nvidia graphics. Works fine
until I install the nvidia driver, then no display. Only recourse I
know is to completely re-install the OS. Note that this problem exists
for me on Ubuntu 8.04.4, and Lucid alpha 2. Will try on 9.10 tonight...

Thanks!

[Bug 401126] Re: Realtek RTL8192SE WLAN Card Fails to work on Medion Akoya E1312 Netbook

2010-01-25 Thread Ned Forrester
For what it's worth:

I installed rtl8192se_linux_2.6.0014.0115.2010.tar.gz on a Lenovo W500
with a RealTek8192se (as reported by Win7), running Fedora 12 (sorry
not Ubuntu). It worked flawlessly with no modification, and
integrates fine with (Gnome?) Network Manager.

My thanks to those who have supplied this driver. I was not having
much luck with ndiswrapper.

[Bug 454930] [NEW] grub2 fails to boot windows correctly

2009-10-18 Thread Ned
Public bug reported:

After installing Ubuntu 9.10 beta, windows fails to boot. On selecting

[Bug 428920] Re: Karmic boot hangs before login

2009-10-03 Thread Ned Patterson
For what it is worth, I had a similar problem after an 'apt-get upgrade'
a few days ago. I booted, saw the B/W ubuntu logo, and then the screen
changed to a text mode, showed some services starting, and then started
flickering incessantly. I was unable to change to a different VT and
log in (it was missing key inputs - presumably because it was switching
back to VT7 for X).

Unlike the others here, my Xlog.0 file indicated that the (restricted)
Nvidia drivers weren't able to load. I was able to boot using an older
kernel selection from Grub. I was also able to boot using the Beta .iso
image on an USB stick.

It seems that for some reason, the nvidia drivers weren't rebuilt when
the kernel was upgraded during the 'apt-get upgrade' I ran yesterday to
move from Alpha 6 to Beta 1. A 'sudo dpkg-reconfigure nvidia-185
-kernel-source' ended up fixing the problem for me.

I only mention it as it seems that many of the problem systems are using
Nvidia chipsets. At this point, I'm assuming it was a one time glitch
and don't plan to file a bug report. Please let me know if I should do
otherwise.

[Bug 432568] [NEW] DVD-RW drive unavailable in Windows after Grub boot

2009-09-18 Thread Ned Patterson
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: grub-pc

After using Grub-2 (and the earlier version, for that matter) to boot
Windows XP, the CD/DVD drive is not available. (No indication of the
drive is visible in My Computer.) The same drive works fine in
Jaunty. The problem exists when both chainloading Grub2 and with Grub2
installed on the MBR.

I have previously used lilo to boot this computer, and the drive was
available after using that bootloader.

The computer is a Clevo M57U laptop running Ubuntu 9.04.
Grub-pc version: 1.96+20080724-12ubuntu2 (installed for testing prior to Karmic
upgrade)

** Affects: grub2 (Ubuntu)
 Importance: Undecided
 Status: New

[Bug 375545] Re: [i945] shuttle X50/intel 945 No outputs definitely connected (needs intel 2.7.1)

2009-09-07 Thread Ned Taylor
I had the same problem, and again it wasn't fixed by the 2.7.1 driver.

I had my monitor connected to a KVM switch which was connected to the
video output on my machine. I discovered (by accident) that when the
monitor was connected directly to the machine the problem went away.
The problem turned out to be the cable from the KVM to the machine.
When I replaced it everything worked fine. What's weird is that the old
cable worked fine for everything else, and once I had started up, I
could replace the new cable with the old and everything continued to
work fine.

Anyway, I'm now back in business.

Regarding the options you added to alsa-base.conf, are the second and

I was able to add some settings in a file to get the sound working.
I added the following to end of /etc/modprobe.d/alsa-base.conf

options snd-hda-intel model=3stack-dig
options snd-hda-intel enable_msi=1
options snd-hda-intel single_cmd=1

After a restart, sound worked.

[Bug 397586] Re: firefox 3.5 - No sound in HTML5 videos

2009-08-05 Thread Ned Wolpert
I upgraded flash plugin to the latest (10.x) manually (via copying it to
/usr/lib/adobe-flashplugin/libflashplayer.so) and after that, sound from
flash movies in firefox 3.5.2 (latest rev of firefox) started working.
The 9.x was not working.

[Bug 161122] Re: nm_applet prompts for password on startup

2007-12-28 Thread Ned
The network manager applet nm-applet that you use to connect to the
wireless network stores the WEP/WPA keys with the gnome keyring manager,
which you can access in System - Administration - Keyring manager.
When a keyring is first created by the nm-applet, you have to supply a
password, which is required every time the keyring is accessed while
locked (which is the case when you reboot). What you can do is delete
the keyring, reboot, re-enter the WPA passphrase, recreate the keyring
using your login password as the password, then use some funny tricks
available online to make it so you aren't prompted for a password
anymore. Grapeshot made a nice post here on how to do that:

[Bug 154272] Re: Visual indication when final release comes out

2007-10-20 Thread Ned
Saying something like your system (7.10 beta) is up to date or your
system (7.10 final release) is up to date would not necessarily work
because as far as I know, beta and release candidates are just snapshots
of packages. Maybe it should say something like A(n) new
(alpha/beta/final) version of Ubuntu is available.

[Bug 112132] Re: failed to set xfer mode error.

2007-10-19 Thread Ned
On my system I have a couple of hard drives attached to IDE to SATA
adapters (specifically, SYBA ADSAIDE-3811 adapters). IDE Hard drive -
sata adapter - sata port on motherboard. With Ubuntu 7.10 and 7.04 the
drives with the adapters don't work and I get this output from dmesg
that is attached with this post, which has those same failed to set
xfermode (err_mask=0x40) errors. irqpoll does not work. I tried booting
the system with an old version of Knoppix (Linux Knoppix 2.6.17 #4 SMP
PREEMPT Wed May 10 2006 i686 GNU/Linux) and the drives work fine with no
errors.

[Bug 135187] Canon Pixma iP4300 prints very dark

2007-08-27 Thread Ned Konz
Public bug reported:

I installed the driver (v 2.7) from Canon's web site, as well as
Gutenprint 5.0.1 (initially). On testing, the test page from the CUPS
(1.3) web interface looked OK on the Canon driver, but very dark on the
Gutenprint driver. So after hearing about Pixma-related fixes in
Gutenprint 5.1.3 I compiled and installed that version. The behavior is
the same as the 5.0.1 package, at least for the test page.

Unfortunately, I can't use the Canon driver from Windows clients (for
unknown reasons, jobs silently disappear). So I'd like the Gutenprint
driver to work.

I have tried to adjust the gamma and brightness in applications (for
instance Gimp2) but that doesn't seem to be able to fix the problem.
