[Bug 1765261] Re: [regression] Ubuntu 18.04 login screen rejects a valid password on first attempt. Usually works on the second attempt

2018-05-22 Thread Neil Woolford
I've just noticed an interesting quirk to this bug; the Caps Lock
modifier key does work for the first character on the first attempt.

That is to say open login screen (by space bar if not already open),
press and release Caps Lock, Caps Lock light now on, very first
character to be typed is now modified to upper case. Caps Lock may then
be turned off.

I wondered why this one modifier does work, and thought that the
modifier key being released before typing the character to be modified
might be significant. So I tried pressing and releasing the normal shift
key before pressing and holding it to modify the first character of the
password. This also worked for me. (It is a little fiddly, so perhaps
others might like to try to confirm that I'm not mistaken?)

So, at the login screen, with the password box open but nothing typed
yet, press and release the (right in my test) shift key, then press and
hold that shift key while typing the first character of the password. I
believe that this will give correct modifier action for the shift key.

[Bug 1724933] Re: I can't adjust display brightness

2017-10-25 Thread Neil Woolford
This appears to be quite an old issue with Optimus graphics. For me the
workaround was to pass specific kernel parameters at boot time to inhibit acpi
control of the backlight but allow intel_backlight control
I followed the instructions at
https://nisheetlall.wordpress.com/2016/07/12/solved-brightness-fix-in-linux-for-optimus-laptops/
which worked first time for me. Your mileage may of course vary - it happens
that I have exactly the same Lenovo Z570 laptop as the author of those
instructions.

[Bug 1724933] Re: I can't adjust display brightness

2017-10-22 Thread Neil Woolford
I found that the brightness controls (via function key or sliders in power
management) were changing the values in
/sys/class/backlight/acpi_videos0/brightness, but nothing changed in
/sys/class/backlight/intel_backlight/brightness.
When I edited the value in /sys/class/backlight/intel_backlight/brightness the
display backlight brightness did change.
I also found that the display brightness could be changed in a unity session,
(although not by function key).

[Bug 1574120] Re: Notebook doesn't suspend when lid is closed after update to 16.04

2016-05-12 Thread Neil Woolford
@seb128

"You have a laptop not connected to an external display and configured
in settings to suspend on lid close (battery/ac) but it doesn't suspend
when you close the lid? Suspending through the menu works though and
settings HandleLidSwitchDocked=suspend makes it suspend on lid close"

Yes, that's an absolutely correct summary of the problem and the
conditions under which it occurs.

I've now also tested from a vt login (Ctrl-Alt-F1) and again the system
doesn't suspend on lid closed unless HandleLidSwitchDocked=suspend is
set

I note that I didn't have to log in when resuming the vt, whereas using
the gui I need to go through the normal graphical greeter/login. When I
closed the vt and returned to the Unity gui after this test, the Unity
gui presented me with the greeter/login. I expect to see this login page
and have to enter my password after a suspend, this is consistent with
my settings.

Yes, the bug is present with the default configuration file, but lid
close to suspend (from unity) works fine if I change the configuration.

In both the bug and functioning conditions the backlight turns off when
the lid is closed.

I will test behaviour from a console log-in later today.

The problem persists after sorting the oddity with the unity-settings-
daemon, which appears to have been a one-off problem. (See bug #1577906
for more detail.)

Now I find that suspend only works if "HandleLidSwitchDocked=suspend" is
in logind.conf.

Without that I return to the bug condition.

In the bug condition suspend works fine from the session indicator.

[Bug 1577906] Re: Laptop sleep on lid close apparently blocked by unity-settings

2016-05-03 Thread Neil Woolford
Curiouser and curiouser.

I've just tried plugging in an external display (for the first time
since upgrading to 16.04).

Both gui and randr reported the correct display configuration and both
displays worked.

Now that I've unplugged that display again, the systemd inhibit block
has disappeared and the system will now suspend on lid close both on
mains and battery power.

This correct behaviour has now survived a cold boot.

So perhaps just one of those things - the settings appear to have sorted
themselves out after adding and removing an external monitor.

I shall leave this open just in case it helps anyone else.

Love and peace,

Neil

[Bug 1577906] [NEW] Laptop sleep on lid close apparently blocked by unity-settings

2016-05-03 Thread Neil Woolford
Public bug reported:

Since upgrading to 16.04LTS my HP 255 laptop no longer suspends when the
lid is closed. The power management gui settings are correct, and
suspend used to work perfectly in 14.04LTS.

Suspend is still available from the system menu, and works correctly
when manually invoked from there or after a short power button press.

The reason I suspect unity-settings-daemon is blocking the lid close
action is that systemd-inhibit gives the following output.

Who: neilw (UID 1000/neilw, PID 1669/unity-settings-)
What: handle-lid-switch
 Why: Multiple displays attached
Mode: block

I do not have multiple displays attached, xrandr gives;

Screen 0: minimum 320 x 200, current 1366 x 768, maximum 8192 x 8192
LVDS connected primary 1366x768+0+0 (normal left inverted right x axis y axis)

The version installed is as follows;

unity-settings-daemon:

2016-05-03 Thread Neil Woolford
On my HP255G1 I have six inhibitors listed, the two blocks being;

 Why: GNOME handling keypresses

Who: neilw (UID 1000/neilw, PID 1669/unity-settings-)

[Bug 1415924] [NEW] Vital config file not included in package

2015-01-29 Thread Neil Woolford
Public bug reported:

Using Ubuntu 14.10 with Nautilus 3.10.1

Installed gnome-xcf-thumbnailer, but it didn't work.

A quick search led me to this http://www.webupd8.org/2013/07/how-to-get-
xcf-thumbnails-in-nautilus.html

Its a workaround published in mid 2013, which simply gives the details
of the configuration file that needs to be added,
/usr/share/thumbnailers/gnome-xcf.thumbnailer

I assume that this should be installed automatically.

[Bug 882699] Re: Déjà Dup fails with Got status code 500 when starting backup

2012-10-25 Thread Neil Woolford
Ok.  To enlarge on my experience, the sequence of events is as follows;

I set up Deja Dup to back up to a named folder on U1.

My machine scans, prepares and uploads files.

A successful backup is reported, there are uploaded files on U1,
including various control files. All appears good.

Future backups may well run correctly.

However, if an attempt to backup results in the code 500 error, that is
the end of backing up to the named folder. Future attempts will not
work.

Thus, once code 500 has been encountered it is a fatal error for that
backup setup.

The only cure appears to be to start again with a new destination
folder.

So the error is reproducible once it has started to occur.

[Bug 882699] Re: Déjà Dup fails with Got status code 500 when starting backup

2012-09-27 Thread Neil Woolford
Don't like to post impatiently, but is there any idea of timescale for
resolving this?

It's plagued my attempts to use DejaDup with Ubuntu One; having to
apply the folder change workaround once would be bearable, but the
problem has returned for me with the new folder name.

If there isn't a prospect of a timely fix I'm going to have to consider
installing the S3 extension(s) for DejaDup and going over to using
Amazon directly, or possibly the FTP version to my web hosting.

But really I'd prefer to use Ubuntu One, and to move several others to
it. But I can't at the moment...

[Bug 956863] Re: Top panel shadow is drawn above presentation when using LO Impress with Presenter Console

2012-05-11 Thread Neil Woolford
Johannes's description is accurate for the bug in my experience.

In addition I have notice that the problem with the shadow being drawn
can occur on the presenter console as well.

This also links to a wishlist item bug #853865 where I describe this aspect as
follows;
If I click within the external display, that shadow disappears from the
audience view, and appears on the presenter view. When I click on the presenter
view on the laptop screen, the shadow returns to the audience view...

This behaviour does allow one to remove the visible shadow from the
audience view, albeit temporarily.

The wish list bug also asks for the top panel to be optional on the
audience (external) display, as the launcher now is.

[Bug 853865] Re: Should have an option to hide unity's top panel on the second monitor

2012-04-03 Thread Neil Woolford
I experience the unwanted top panel when using LibreOffice Impress with
an external projector for the audience view.

It would be helpful to be able to remove the top panel from a secondary
monitor, in a similar manner to the way one can now specify that the
launcher doesn't appear on a given monitor. This would give a cleaner
screen before and after presentations.

When the presentation runs, the presenter view (console) shows on the
laptop and the audience sees just the current slide on screen. However,
I find that although the slide expands to full screen, the shadow of the
now invisible top panel is superimposed on the slide. This is clearly a
problem.

If I click within the external display, that shadow disappears from the
audience view, and appears on the presenter view. When I click on the
presenter view on the laptop screen, the shadow returns to the audience
view...

Possibly a separate bug, but would almost certainly be fixed (for the
audience view) by implementing this wishlist feature.

2012-02-10 Thread Neil Woolford
Won't fix is from upstream. Their version, from which the Ubuntu
version is derived, doesn't show the bug, so the upstream maintainers
won't be fixing it themselves.

So far although rated high in importance the bug isn't assigned to
anyone involved in Ubuntu to fix.

How you fix on your system I can't advise as I don't know whether you
are running oneiric with the proposed repository active or pangolin...

However, for me I just open my encrypted documents on a machine running
a pre-bug version for now.

I shall look at this further and make appropriate links between

A quick experiment suggests that the problem is partly related to the
font used, as not all fonts suffer from the problem.

Note that all the fonts (I have tried so far) do kern correctly in the

fonts.

[Bug 908326] [NEW] Pair kerning fails in Impress slide show

2011-12-23 Thread Neil Woolford
Public bug reported:

Using LibreOffice Impress 3.4.4 under Ubuntu 11.10

When I design a slide in Impress the pair kerning appears correct. I
would expect the kerning to remain correct when the presentation is
shown.

What actually happens is that the kerning settings are not applied,
leading to very ugly typography.

I've not noticed this problem in the past, so I think it may be a
regression.

Laryllan's dispwin workaround in post #5 worked for me too.

Argyll was already installed, as I would have expected. Whether this is
the case on a new install rather than an upgrade I wouldn't know.

The problem isn't broken colour management per se, rather a problem with
automatic recognition of hardware by the gnome-colour-manager or its new
front end wrapper.

I'd reckon some device recognition data or routines have been omitted or
somehow disabled in the current oneiric system.

Nvida graphics and an Eizo screen.) The problem is also a regression
for me.

Like him I find that colormgr get-devices does not list the screen.

My laptop, a Lenovo with intel graphics, also upgraded to 11.10 is fine
and still finds the profile.

On the laptop colormgr get-devices lists many devices including the
screen.

[Bug 662065] Re: Regression: 1394 scanner device (sgN) permissions

2011-02-25 Thread Neil Woolford
Ok. The same regression here with an Epson scanner. It's dual interface
and Just Works if plugged in as a USB device but the permissions for the
device need changing from root to work on firewire.

I've run the same diagnostic as above, but can't see where in it the
user and group are set. For now I can manually reset owner and group to
use the Firewire interface, but where should it be set automatically?

[Bug 662065] Re: Regression: 1394 scanner device (sgN) permissions

2011-02-25 Thread Neil Woolford
Some googling and thinking later, I have now added an ad hoc udev rule
which sorts it for me for now.

/etc/udev/rules.d/90-scannerbodge.rules

SUBSYSTEMS==scsi,ATTRS{vendor}==EPSON   ,MODE=0666

This is far from foolproof or good practice but as I have no other Epson
devices at the moment, and am unlikely to have any on the scsi subsystem
it suffices as proof of concept and works round the problem for now.

I'd still be interested to know where the rule should be by default, as
I've no doubt it should be somewhere else than where I've put it.

2010-05-15 Thread Neil Woolford
I'd agree that this is likely a duplicate of bug
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/gnome-panel/+bug/574247

It was certainly a hardware problem for me, swapping the Matrox out for

[Bug 572550] Re: Panel utilities not shown on startup

2010-05-15 Thread Neil Woolford
Yes; the hardware didn't suffer from the problem before 10.04 or with
the live CD. So it is the driver *installed* in 10.04 that causes the
problem. However, it is linked to using a Matrox card.

I've not seen bug https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/439448 with the Matrox
card, but have seen it on other machines with Intel graphics, so I'm not
sure that is a related bug, although it seems to affect the same end
(right hand side) of the top panel so maybe there is a link.

[Bug 572550] Re: Panel utilities not shown on startup

2010-05-03 Thread Neil Woolford
You are not alone...

I've just experienced this bug on a new installation of Lucid final
release on an old PIII machine with a matrox video card running a 5:4
ratio flat panel (not native 1024x768). The panels would show correctly
after any change to their properties, but be incomplete again at the
next login.

My workaround was to change the screen resolution to 1024x768, after
which the panels show correctly on login without any tweaking.

I did see an odd 'flicker' effect on opening the screen, when the right
hand edge (where the panel display is missing) was refreshed after the
rest of the screen.

[Bug 532988] Re: burn the selection of files across several media (spanning) does not work

2010-03-07 Thread Neil Woolford
OK. More testing, more confusion. Now my pet theory about using
nautilus windows rather than tabs seems wrong. I've just had spanned
burning fail again using two windows. And work, on another machine,
with tabs or windows.

Trying to use Brasero as a stand-alone still fails always for me when
trying to span discs. (So far...)

So it is an instability rather than a fixed bug.

[Bug 532988] Re: burn the selection of files across several media (spanning) does not work

2010-03-06 Thread Neil Woolford
After more investigation I find that this bug occurs for me if using
Brasero as a stand-alone programme, or if I try to use it from Nautilus
in a tabbed window.

In more detail; if I have two Nautilus windows open, one for the CD
burner (Brasero) and the other for the source files, then attempting to
copy more than a single CD of data *does* function correctly, with the
data files spanned over as many CDs as are needed.

On the other hand, if I have a single Nautilus window open, with two
tabs, one for the source files and one for the CD burner and then drag
the files between tabs I get the bug that I reported above.

[Bug 532989] [NEW] burn the selection of files across several media (spanning) does not work

2010-03-05 Thread Neil Woolford
*** This bug is a duplicate of bug 532988 ***
https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/532988

Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: brasero

I am trying to write a directory of image files to CD. The files are of
around 3MB to 6MB each, and the overall data size is greater than will
fit on one data CD.

If I drag and drop the files into brasero (normally via its integration
with gnome) and then click Write to Disc, the size estimation process
runs and Disc Burning Setup tells me that there is not enough free space
on the CD-R and asks if I would like to burn the files across several
media. I then click the Burn Several Discs button. In the next window
I press Burn.

I would expect the program to prepare and write the first CD and then
prompt me to exchange it for a new blank and continue to write files to
that.

The Burning CD window appears, and an image is created. At the end of
the image creation process an error message tells me that An unknown
error occurred. The log file ends with the line Session error :
unknown (brasero_burn_record brasero-burn.c:2811).

This behaviour is exhibited by both a 32 bit and a 64 bit system, using
Ubuntu 9.10 (karmic) with brasero version 2.28.2 from Karmic-updates.

I've just tried the brightness function keys on my 3000 N200, and they

to generate the brightness keycodes. Other Fn and key combinations all
appear to work fine.

Bug 462828 refers to a potentially data loosing bug; the automatic

It works for me here, using Karmic Beta on both the library machine and

skipping out of a track before it should end.

using the power switch recovers the system ok.

[Bug 382866] [NEW] No menu item installed in Jaunty

2009-06-02 Thread Neil Woolford
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gscan2pdf

I have just installed gscan2pdf on my system running Jaunty.

The program works fine if I start it from the command line, but I cannot
find a menu item for it.

I would expect a menu item to be automatically installed. I believe one
should be installed in Applications=Graphics.

There is no sign of such a menu item if I open the menu editor.

[Bug 382866] Re: No menu item installed in Jaunty

2009-06-02 Thread Neil Woolford
I've uninstalled and reinstalled on my workstation, but still have no
(automatic) menu item.

I've also installed on my laptop, also running Jaunty. In that case the
menu item does appear automatically as expected.

So the problem is peculiar to one of my systems. Of course that is the
one I actually have a scanner attached to...

If others aren't having problems with this I don't think we need to
chase it too hard as I've edited the menu manually ;- I'm still a
little puzzled though, as it is reproducible on the one machine.

Ok Martin.

I've tried to use apport to capture a crash report, but it just isn't

[Bug 350772] Re: playing MMS / .ASX with totem needs manual install of codec package

2009-04-28 Thread Neil Woolford
I also had a failure to automatically install when first using the bbc
live radio player (streaming iplayer).

Same experience as Tenoch, adding gstreamer ugly plugins via synaptic
did not work for me.

However, using Applications=Add/Remove (set to show All available
applications), selecting the Sound Video tab and the searching for
mms led me to the Gstreamer plugins for mms, wavpak, quicktime,
musepack.

Installing this did solve the problem for me. I'm not familiar with the
use of Add/Remove Applications, so don't know how it interacts with
synaptic or what the actual packages installed are called under
synaptic. I was not asked to enable additional repositories, so I
assume that the necessary packages were available, just not found
automatically.

[Bug 287811] Re: Emptying Trash Fails with 'Error while expunging folder'

2009-04-20 Thread Neil Woolford
In my case the problem persists in Jaunty release candidate.

The workaround that previously worked for me (briefly, removing files
matching *ibex* in /mail/local) has not worked for me for a month or
more now...

Bug http://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=550414 appears at first
sight to refer to this bug, so I think it has already been reported
upstream. A quick read of that report suggests that the bug itself may
already be fixed, but the fix does not clean up already corrupted
evolution installs. There are suggestions in the report for removal of
further indexing/.db files to clean up existing damaged installations.

I shall try this when I next have time, which should be this week and
will report back with more detail.

Hotplugging is fine, both plug in and unplug, and the eraser and stylus
are reported separately and can be configured with appropriate tools in

I look forward to this entering the main repository in the next few
days. Thanks Timo for bringing it forward for acceptance.

[Bug 355021] [NEW] Unplugging USB tablet crashes xserver (Jaunty)

2009-04-04 Thread Neil Woolford
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: xserver-xorg-input-aiptek

I am using Jaunty beta, updated to 4th of April.

For several days now my Aiptek tablet has been working, but with a
persistent bug.

If I unplug the tablet, the xserver crashes, giving a few moments of
screen garbage followed by a return to GDM from which I start a new
session.

I am not experiencing crashes if the tablet is left plugged in all the
time. (Contrary to earlier experience with Intrepid, where the xserver
would not start if the tablet was plugged in.)

[Bug 352711] [NEW] Package does not include .fdi file needed for full function (Jaunty/Intrepid)

2009-03-31 Thread Neil Woolford
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: xserver-xorg-input-aiptek

I am using the beta release of Jaunty/9.04 updated as of 31st March.

The xserver-xorg-input-aiptek package now installs via Synaptic without
errors.

However when I try to use my pen and tablet I find that I can move the
cursor around the screen without problems, but cannot click with either
stylus or buttons. No pressure sensitivity is available in the Gimp.

A well know search engine led me to
https://help.ubuntu.com/community/AiptekTablet where it is suggested
that for Ubuntu 8.10 it is necessary to add a .fdi file to enable all
features of the device and driver. (This did work on my previous
installation of 8.10, but with a crash problem on startup if the tablet
is plugged in.)

The suggested .fdi file (also given below) works correctly

/etc/hal/fdi/policy/10-aiptek.fdi (root:root)

?xml version=1.0 encoding=UTF-8?
deviceinfo version=0.2
  device
match key=info.product contains=Aiptek
  merge key=input.x11_driver type=stringaiptek/merge
  merge key=input.x11_options.SendCoreEvents type=stringtrue /merge
  merge key=input.x11_options.USB type=stringOn/merge
  merge key=input.x11_options.Type type=stringstylus/merge
  merge key=input.x11_options.Mode type=stringabsolute/merge
  merge key=input.x11_options.zMin type=string0/merge
  merge key=input.x11_options.zMax type=string511/merge
/match
  /device
/deviceinfo

Note that this contains the two suggested lines to give pressure
sensitivity, without them clicks work but there is no continual
gradation available to Gimp. Note also that the tablet must be
configured within Gimp as an extended input device for pressure
sensitivity.

I would suggest that this .fdi file or something similar should be
included in the package, as otherwise console work is needed to get the
tablet and pen to work in both 8.10 and 9.04.

The crash on login no longer occurs on my 9.04 system although it was
present on the 8.10 one. I assume that the updates to cure this are
included in the latest build.

[Bug 351076] Re: Package xserver-xorg-input-aiptek does not install (Januty beta)

2009-03-30 Thread Neil Woolford
Jon, I notice you've now tagged this with packaging, which I think is
correct. (The program itself installed and worked fine on Intrepid.)

The dependencies reported by Synaptic include removing xserver-xorg and
replacing it with xserver-xorg-core, which apparently isn't happening.
Possibly a matter of exact version numbers, as xserver-xorg-core appears
to be in the repository (and indeed installed already).

I also notice that the version provided is xserver-xorg-
aiptek1:1.1.1-1build1 (jaunty) but the Launchpad overview at
https://launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/xserver-xorg-input-aiptek gives the
version as xserver-build2 so a slight regression there.

2009-03-29 Thread Neil Woolford
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: xserver-xorg-input-aiptek

I am running Jaunty Jackalope Beta (currently within a VirtaulBox
machine).

When I attempt to install the xserver-xorg-input-aiptek package using
Synaptic, I first see a long list of packages to be removed, starting
with ubuntu-desktop and xorg itself, followed by a long list of xserver
components.

If I risk continuing past this worrying list, Synaptic reports the error

xserver-xorg-input-aiptek:
Depends: xserver-xorg-core but it is not going to be installed

This problem was also present in an earlier alpa release of Jaunty
installed directly rather than in a virtual machine.
