Same solution.
Moving the line PWD = $(shell pwd) just before ifeq ($(KERNELRELEASE),)

[Bug 493156] Re: Please enable CONFIG_TASK_DELAY_ACCT

2012-05-06 Thread Nicholas Janssen
I have done a prelimiary test on harddrive speeds with delayacct
disabled ( the new default after the atrocity of it being removed) and
with it enabled...

The limted test script I created shows a clear winner:

on average delayacct is faster enabled.

I cannot explain this. I need someone else to verify the data.

attached is all my data, how to enable delayacct, and a copypaste of the
bash script i used for testing... (use time to measure the exact time to
user/system/)

I also was going to say the same thing. If microsoft and apple can
achieve vsync on the same hardware and lower performing hardware then
ubuntu can also. I understand that it will be difficult from a
technical perspective, but vsync is essential for mainstream adoption.

On Thu, Oct 29, 2009 at 6:55 PM, Graeme Humphries gra...@sudo.ca wrote:
I'm not sure that's what you meant to say, since other OSes on the same

compositing is done, this is currently very difficult under Linux.

And that's a fair assessment, but it doesn't mean that it shouldn't be
worked towards. Because it is sort of ridiculous we can't have this on
modern hardware with current Linux distros.

Ok, sorry for the delay. I did as you asked, I took one screenshot
using medium compiz settings. and one using extra compiz settings.
Although the medium seemed to have visably less tearing when i moved
my windows around, the screenshots still are completely distorted.

I might later try to record video of monitor and check for tearing,
just to confirm this isn't some printscreen glitch.

That's very interesting. Your problem definitely appears in the
framebuffer, which indicates 2 things to me:

  - Your install isn't doing double buffering, as double buffering would never
have this issue visually appear in the framebuffer.
  - Your install isn't even attempting to vsync, as if it was, it would be
 doing double buffering.

This makes me suspect this may not be a dupe of #212587. For some
reason, your window manager or copy of X isn't doing proper double
 buffering.

With the proprietary NV drivers, can you enable compiz effects, and see
if this changes things at all?

I am running windows xp nvidia 7600gs, with the latest drivers. Forced
Vsync option enabled. I get 100% vsync when I move windows around
rapidly and take screenshot.

I get 0% vsync doing same thing on latest kubuntu, with latest
proprietary nvidia drivers, and open source nv driver, with all
vsync options enabled. Strangely, I do have fps cap at 60 fps on glx
gears. Yet applications visibly tears apart if I move them around too
fast, movies also tear apart mid frame, even though my pc is more than
fast enough to handle full hd video playback without tearing on
windows xp.

What really is the issue perhaps might be, there is no concrete way of
testing if vsync is working besides high speed window movement and
printscreen. Most other bugs are easily verified, yet vsync is hard to
confirm on a stationary screen. Anyone care to develop a program that
reads the framebuffer and determines if vsync is working?

 Nick:

You can't check the framebuffers for vsync problems, because it's not an
issue that'll show up in the framebuffer. Typically, in applications
that attempt to do vsync, there are two complete, correct buffers. The
app then swaps the inactive (back) buffer to screen when the monitor is
doing its vertical sync, (ie, not drawing to the screen) so that screen
updates aren't visible to the user. If there's a problem with that code,
it swaps the buffers in the middle of drawing the screen, and you see
 the tearing effect.

So there's really nothing to check in the buffers, as they'll likely
always be correct. The problem is a matter of timing: when is compiz or
whatever window manager you're using swapping the buffers? And why isn't
it doing it during the monitor vsync?

2009-06-19 Thread Nicholas Janssen

That's sort of a non sequitur, since Windows doesn't vsync properly on

really, really annoying, considering it's something we've known how to
do since the mid 80s. There's really no excuse for it at this point.

Status in “compiz” source package in Ubuntu: Triaged

 Bug description:
Open the CCSM and go to General Options - Display Settings

Enabling Sync to VBlank has absolutely no effect on my desktop and screen
tearing still occurs. This is a major issue with PC with built-in Intel gfx
or Ati gfx cards that utilize the built-in driver that ubuntu comes with.
There is no options to enable vsync in the drivers themselves and the CCSM
vblank option doesn't work. Nvidia restricted drivers provide the option
inside of nvidia-settings so its not a problem for nvidia users. Having
screen tear really detracts from the compiz experience and makes everything
 look unpolished as a whole.

Re: [Bug 197589] Re: Numeric keypad no longer works after upgrade

2009-06-02 Thread Nicholas Janssen
This bug only occurs with USB keyboard. my ps2 keyboard does not
suffer from this issue.

The exact problem is that the usb keyboards's numlock state cannot be
changed via usb keyboard. ps2 keyboard can enable usb keyboard numlock
mode.

 I know it's rather annoying.

[Bug 151674] Re: compiz+nvidia: tearing in xvideo (totem/mplayer/VLC/XINE)

2009-03-03 Thread Nicholas Janssen
I have something to add... I have done testing with compiz disabled...

i move a dark window against a light background rapidly, and i get
tearing...

http://img7.imageshack.us/img7/2005/vsyncbrokenlatesti386.png

perhaps tearing is always occuring even with compiz off, but it is far less
obvious. when you turn compiz on any existing tearing gets severly exxagerated.

tearing also seems to occur with the open source nv drivers. something
must be done.

ok this is seriously fucked up.

I just plugged in an old ps2 keyboard. i pressed the numlock key(on the
ps2) and now both numpads work.

This is a clean install. I will restart and report back. tomarrow
but...

apparently plugging in an old ps2 keyboard and pressing numlock key will
restore usb keyboard functionality.
