[Bug 1905168] Re: PipeWire conflicts with PulseAudio and hides audio devices

2021-02-21 Thread Nick B.
Apparently this was fixed in pipewire 0.3.17. Any chance we can get this
fix backported?

[Bug 1835660] Re: initramfs unpacking failed

2019-12-18 Thread Nick B.
I still see this message on a fully up-to-date Kubuntu 19.10 system.
However the system boots fine and everything seems to be working ok.
This is apparently a non-fatal error message? It sounds pretty bad but
it still seems to have been able to load the initramfs image fine. What
does this really mean then?

[Bug 1770432] [NEW] kwalletd5 non-responsive at login, blocks wifi and other applications requiring passwords

2018-05-10 Thread Nick B.
Public bug reported:

Upon login kwalletd5 seems to be in a non-responsive state. This blocks
network-manager from connecting to wifi as well as any other
applications that have passwords stored in kwallet. If you kill
kwalletd5 it will respawn itself in working condition and immediately
prompt to unlock the wallet. I've only been able to reproduce this on a
wifi connected device not with Ethernet so there may be some connection
to how kwallet interacts with network-manager on a wifi connection.

Steps to reproduce:
1. Login on a wifi connected device
2. Kwallet never prompts to open the default wallet causing network-manager to
not connect to the network and other applications (such as Kmail for example)
to not work properly

What I expect to happen:
1. Login and be prompted by kwallet to unlock the default wallet so
applications can access saved passwords

What happened instead:
1. Kwallet did not prompt to unlock the default wallet causing applications to
not work because they can't access saved passwords.

[Bug 1669649] Re: update-apt-xapian-index crashes with IndexError: list index out of range

2018-03-01 Thread Nick B.
It is still an issue on 17.10 but I discovered it seemed to have been
triggered by a specific package in a local LAN repo I am using. Once I
removed the package from the repo it stopped crashing. However, I have
been unable to determine what exactly about the package was causing it
to crash which I would still think is a bug as apt-xapian-index should
probably handle bad packages more gracefully.

The current default discovery method is SLP.

[Bug 1697958] Re: HPLIP cannot detect printers in your network

2017-06-16 Thread Nick B.
A workaround seems to be to click the "Show Advanced Options" button in
the Device Discovery window and change the Network Discovery Method to
mDNS/Bonjour. It will successfully detect the printer with that method.

[Bug 1697958] [NEW] HPLIP cannot detect printers in your network

2017-06-14 Thread Nick B.
Public bug reported:

On a fresh install of Kubuntu 17.04 I cannot add a network printer though the
HPLIP Toolbox. I get an error message that says "HPLIP cannot detect printers
in your network.
This may be due to existing firewall settings blocking the required ports. When
you are in a trusted network environment, you may open the ports for network
services like mdns and slp in the firewall. For detailed steps follow the link.
http://hplipopensource.com/node/374;

However snmpwalk finds the printer perfectly fine
$ snmpwalk -Os -c public -v 1 192.168.1.21 1.3.6.1.4.1.11.2.3.9.1.1.7.0
iso.3.6.1.4.1.11.2.3.9.1.1.7.0 = STRING:
"MFG:Hewlett-Packard;CMD:PJL,PML,PCLXL,URP,PCL,PDF,POSTSCRIPT;MDL:HP LaserJet

M276nw;MEM:MEM=230MB;COMMENT:RES=600x8;LEDMDIS:USB#ff#04#01;CID:HPLJPDLV1;"

Other systems that were upgraded to 17.04 can still access and detect
the printer.

What I expect to happen:
1. Open HPLIP Toolbox
2. Add a network printer
3. Printer is detected

What happened instead
1. Open HPLIP Toolbox
2. Add a network printer
3. No printers found

[Bug 1565950] Re: Grub 2 fails to boot a kernel on a luks encrypted volume with Secure Boot enabled

2017-06-09 Thread Nick B.
Just encountered this problem when trying to setup a fully encrypted
system. I rebuilt the grub2 package with the changes listed in the first
comment and tested in VirtualBox in UEFI mode and it does work.

You can't simply copy the modules to the ESP partition because it a)
won't work with secure boot and b) grub seems to be hardcoded to try to
load them from the /boot/grub/ directory which isn't accessible at that
point in the boot process and there doesn't appear to be a way to
specify them manually.

Can these extra modules please get included in the grubx64.efi binary?

[Bug 1537528] [NEW] byobu-config segfault with screen backend

2016-01-24 Thread Nick B.
Public bug reported:

When running byobu with the screen backend byobu-config segfaults when
trying to open it by pressing F9.

Steps to reproduce.

2. Press F9 to open the configuration menu

Running byobu-config manually within a byobu screen session shows it's

[Bug 1065400] Re: Support for loading Broadcom bluetooth firmware

2015-11-18 Thread Nick B.
What's weird is the file names it's looking for keep changing. For mine
it used to look for "BCM920702 Bluetooth 4.0-0a5c-21e8.hcd". Then at
some point it started looking for "BCM20702A0-0a5c-21e8.hcd". Now it's
looking for "BCM20702A1-0a5c-21e8.hcd". I don't know why these keep
changing.

[Bug 1485365] [NEW] Update libtorrent-rasterbar to latest 1.x release

2015-08-16 Thread Nick B.
Public bug reported:

Ubuntu has an extremely old version of libtorrent-rasterbar. 0.16.8. The
latest upstream release is 1.0.6. Some programs like qbittorrent require
the 1.x version for certain features and builds against 1.x by default.
The minimum version was recently bumped to 0.16.9 which makes it
impossible to build qbittorrent now. Could someone please get the 1.x
release into Ubuntu?

[Bug 1247107] Re: Runaway irqbalance consuming CPU and Memory

2015-03-31 Thread Nick B.
I seem to have run into this on the Raspberry Pi 2 with 1.0.6-2ubuntu1
on 14.10. It may be related to
https://github.com/Irqbalance/irqbalance/issues/5 which was fixed in
1.0.7. Indeed the Pi 2 does not have /sys/bus/pci. I've packaged 1.0.9
for the Pi 2 in this PPA
https://launchpad.net/~futurepilot/+archive/ubuntu/raspberry-pi-2/

Is there a reason Debian and Ubuntu are using such an old version?

From what I can tell this is an Ubuntu issue. There's no reason to bug Nvidia
about it since they don't do any work with the Ubuntu packages

2015-01-15 Thread Nick B.
The Ubuntu packages are not just a drop-in. They hook into DKMS which the
Nvidia drivers themselves do not do. There's also a lot of other Ubuntu
specific things that the package does. Looking at all these bugs they all have
to do with the module failing to build with the Ubuntu package. I don't see
any reports of the issue with Nvidia .run installer.

On Thursday, January 15, 2015 08:29:12 PM Brian Norris wrote:
The Ubuntu package is mostly just a drop-in of the official Nvidia
 packages for Linux:

 http://www.nvidia.com/object/unix.html

So yes, this is actually an Nvidia upstream problem.

I suspect that there is some sort of race condition in the provided
build scripts written by Nvidia, and they are only showing up
intermittently or under particular system configurations/states, so
package reinstallation tends to work fine the second time.

Related: I see this comment in Nvidia's Makefile regarding the new
build system in Linux = 2.6:

 # The new approach currently has its own share of problems, some of which
 # are architectural difficulties with KBUILD, others minor annoyances. For
 # this reason, an improved version of the NVIDIA Makefile is available to
 # those experiencing difficulties.

So it sounds like they admit to having architectural difficulties here.
I wonder where this improved version of the Makefile can be
 obtained...

It does not have to be the auto-connection setting. You can even

[Bug 1065400] Re: Support for loading Broadcom bluetooth firmware

2015-01-05 Thread Nick B.
Apparently in 14.10 the .hcd file needs to be /lib/firmware/brcm.
Here is the .hcd file for the IOGEAR GBU521 (0a5c:21e8). Place it in
/lib/firmware/brcm/BCM920702 Bluetooth 4.0-0a5c-21e8.hcd (Yes including the
spaces in the file name)

modprobe -r btusb
modprobe btusb

Looks like it is successfully loading the firmware

[Bug 1354924] Re: Networkmanager does not autoconnect to wireless network

2014-12-23 Thread Nick B.
I've got this same problem too. After doing a fresh boot and logging in,
the wireless will not connect but it is listed in the plasma-nm
connection list. I've found that if I delete it and re-add the
connection it will automatically reconnect after suspend/hibernate until
the next reboot or login. Then it breaks again.

Is anyone else using a hidden network? I'm wondering if that's related.

** Description changed:

After resuming from hibernate I have no network connection. This doesn't
happen with suspend, only hibernate. I'm guessing this is something with
network-manager as doing 'sudo service network-manager restart' fixes
the problem. ifconfig shows no eth0 interface but doing 'ifconfig eth0'
does return some info. It's like the interface is down or something

Same here. I saw the error that the DKMS module failed to build however the
Nvidia driver is still working fine.

Also did some testing, and it didn't break the driver. I can switch from
my Intel to NVIDIA with no problems and 3D programs run normally.

[Bug 1244519] [NEW] Muon Updater says the system is up-to-date even if there are updates available

2013-10-24 Thread Nick B.
Public bug reported:

When I get a notification about updates I click on the icon and muon-
updater opens but it says the system is up-to-date when it's really not.
The install updates button can still be clicked and updates will be
installed but it's really annoying because I can't see what packages are
available for update and could be confusing for some users.

Steps to reproduce:
1. Wait for updates to be available
2. Click on the notification icon to open muon-updater

What should happen:
It should say there are updates available and list what packages are updatable

What happens instead:
It says the system is already up-to-date

Boot it just hangs at a blank screen after selecting a boot option. I
don't get any errors regarding a Secure Boot Policy Violation with it
enabled so it doesn't seem to be related to Secure Boot. I am also not
able to provide any logs as I cannot even get it to boot. I'm not sure
if providing logs from a session booted with legacy BIOS support enabled
will be helpful.

[Bug 1200986] [NEW] Ubuntu live USB will not boot on Asus 1015e in UEFI mode

2013-07-13 Thread Nick B.
Public bug reported:

I recently got an Asus 1015e laptop and I cannot get a live USB to boot
in UEFI mode. When I try to boot it I get to the Grub menu, but after
selecting an option it just hangs at a blank screen. It looks like it
doesn't loading anything, even the kernel. It just hangs immediately.
The only way I've been able to get it to boot is to disable Secure Boot
and enable CSM (legacy BIOS support) but this won't play nicely with a
Windows 8 dual boot. I've tested with 13.04 and the 7-11-13 saucy daily
image. The hardware details are here
http://www.asus.com/Notebooks_Ultrabooks/1015E/#specifications

[Bug 1182655] [NEW] Samba printers are missing after reboot until smbd is restarted

2013-05-21 Thread Nick B.
Public bug reported:

This may be related to
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/samba/+bug/1010501
and
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/lucid/+source/upstart/+bug/494141

After a reboot Samba printers are not visible until smbd is restarted.
I've tried adding and started cups to /etc/init/smbd.conf but that only
seemed to work very intermittently (I'm guessing this caused a race condition).
I've also tried adding and started smbd to /etc/init/cups.conf but that
didn't work at all. The only thing that seems to have worked is the patch in
this comment
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/lucid/+source/upstart/+bug/494141/comments/18

Steps to reproduce
1. Reboot a samba server with printers shared through samba
2. Run smbclient -L COMPUTER -N after it comes back up

What is expected:
Samba printers should be listed under Sharename in the output from the
smbclient command above or to Windows clients

What happens instead:
Printers are not available through samba until smbd is restarted

[Bug 1160729] Re: easytag does not start

2013-05-09 Thread Nick B.
I ran into this bug too. Definitely looks to be related to the oxygen-gtk
theme. Dirty workaround without having to disable oxygen-gtk or run as root:
GTK2_RC_FILES=/usr/share/themes/Clearlooks/gtk-2.0/gtkrc easytag

This will run only easytag with the Clearlooks theme. Doesn't look very
nice in KDE but it works.

[Bug 937200] Re: Fat fonts in Swing applications

2013-03-23 Thread Nick B
@blackskad: Thanks that did it, in a much more satisfactory way than
removing other packages...

To re-iterate, it seems Oracle have dropped the Ubuntu font
configuration from their latest Java 7 packages (for Ubuntu at least).
The minimal change is, (assuming you have java-6-sun installed):

sudo cp /usr/lib/jvm/java-6-sun/jre/lib/fontconfig.Ubuntu.*
/usr/lib/jvm/java-7-oracle/jre/lib/

Re: [Bug 1052897] Re: Printer sharing via CUPS broadcasting dropped in CUPS 1.6.x

2012-10-03 Thread Nick B.
AFAIK you do not need the driver on the client. See comment #3 for details.
you will only get asked for a queue name, not for a driver. I can confirm
that if done correctly you do not get asked for a driver.

On Wednesday, October 03, 2012 04:51:23 PM Kevin Keijzer wrote:
I guess this was to be expected with Apple being in charge of CUPS. No
longer having network printers automatically discovered and needing the
drivers on the client-side are two of the worst regressions in Ubuntu

Fork time? Seriously, this is bad. Ubuntu's printing system will be just
 like Redmond's now!

[Bug 1059908] [NEW] Cannot print to IPP network printer with 12.10 client

2012-10-01 Thread Nick B.
Public bug reported:

The version of CUPS in 12.10 introduced a new autodetection for IPP
printers via Avahi. I am unable to print anything to the printer until I
log into the server the printer is connected to and run cupsctl
--share-printers. I need to do that every time I try to print something
or else the printer status says In use unable to locate printer. As
soon as I run the cupsctl command the job prints immediately.

Expected result: I should be able to print to an IPP network printer
using the avahi autodetection without having to run cupsctl --share-
printers every time.

Actual result: I can't print anything without running cupsctl --share-
printers every time I want to print something

The printer is an HP P1505 hooked up to an Ubuntu 12.04 server.
