[Bug 1809117] Re: Screen corruption on "Lock Screen" or "Switch User" command

2018-12-19 Thread Nick Booker
Re-enabled GSConnect and it seems fine now. Very strange.

Anyway I think this can be closed. Apologies for the noise.

Disabled the GSConnect extension and all seems fine now.

I'll head over and raise the bug there.

[Bug 1809117] Re: Screen corruption on "Lock Screen" or "Switch User" command

2018-12-19 Thread Nick Booker
Further to comment 5, I've had a further look in the live environment
and it appears the screen isn't locked out when I switch user - so I can
use Ctrl-Alt-F{1..8} to switch between things. This suggests to me that
the screen-locking code path isn't getting tested when I try this from
the Live USB.

[Bug 1809117] Re: Screen corruption on "Lock Screen" or "Switch User" command

2018-12-19 Thread Nick Booker
Not a problem on live USB stick I installed from.

I booted the live medium for Cosmic, set a password for the live user,
created 'anotheruser' from the Settings panel, logged out and back in as
the live session user.

Clicked the User Menu -> Live Session User -> Switch User, and I was
taken straight to the GDM login screen, where I could switch user to
anotheruser. And I was able to switch back and forth between the live
user and anotheruser without any issues.

An oddity is in the live session the 'Lock screen' icon isn't offered
even though the accounts are password-protected - only Switch User is
present - which makes me wonder if I'm activating the same code path
this way.

2018-12-19 Thread Nick Booker
Despite my not selecting the option when I raised this, I do think this
is a security issue because it can reveal on-screen data in a mode where
it's expected it's all locked away. However I can't find an option to
add the security flag to this bug report after the fact.

[Bug 1809117] [NEW] Screen corruption on "Lock Screen" or "Switch User" command

2018-12-19 Thread Nick Booker
Public bug reported:

Click the user menu (top right) and choose either the Lock icon or
$username -> Switch User.

I expected to be sent to a lock screen (possibly via a blanked screen or
a screensaver - I don't know what normal behaviour is for Ubuntu 19.04).

What happened was most of the Gnome shell was left up on screen,
including all my apps that were running, along with the user menu with
greyed-out Lock button. If I click the menu again, I get the cut-down
version I would expect from GDM with only the option to alter volume and
network connections. If I click the top bar again, I get a sort of
shimmering version of the cut-down user menu superimposed on the
original full version of the user menu that never went away.

The favourites icon on the left dock are also clickable and hoverable,
but they don't actually do anything and any tooltips are left imprinted
on the screen.

I can unlock the screen again by manually pressing Ctrl-Alt-F1 to return
me to the original GDM login screen, clicking my user picture and
entering my password.

I have an unlisted youtube video of most of this behaviour, except
there's no recording of me switching to VT1 to unlock again (the
recorded screen goes blank for that part).

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JjocsxBLUpE

My assignment of 'gnome-shell' is a guess. As far as I know it could be
related to gdm3, the X intel driver, X itself or even the kernel, or
some nasty interaction between those.

[Bug 1159138] [NEW] glade-gtk2 has same name in menu as Glade 3

2013-03-23 Thread Nick Booker
Public bug reported:

I've got glade-gtk2 and glade packages installed, but both of them have
the same menu entries.

i.e. if I click Applications - Programming I get two Glade menu
entries with identical icons, but one loads the GTK3 version and the
other the GTK2 version.

My current versions are:
 glade-gtk2: 3.8.0-0ubuntu5
 glade: 3.14.0-0ubuntu1.1

This means I have to launch each in turn and see which one I get.

I've renamed one of them in my own menu for now, but obviously it would
be good if the GTK2 one got a name like Glade GTK2 on the menu by
default to avoid confusion.

[Bug 1031350] Re: [quantal] no network resolution after latest upgrade of network-manager

2013-01-10 Thread Nick Booker
I also had this issue after an upgrade from Precise, but
/etc/NetworkManager/dnsmasq.d was there.

I found I had a permanantly blank resolv.conf, and had to

 dpkg-reconfigure resolvconf

and say 'Yes' to Prepare /etc/resolv.conf for dynamic updates?
and I said 'No' when it asked me if it should append my current contents to the
config file.

It now works, with /etc/resolv.conf pointing at 127.0.1.1 which I
presume means that it's delegating to dnsmasq on localhost.

[Bug 381017] Re: Cannot drag attachment from mail attachment pane to desktop

2012-11-30 Thread Nick Booker
A solution might be to implement the Xdnd Direct Save (XDS) protocol:

 http://freedesktop.org/wiki/Specifications/XDS

Doing the job via XDS means Thunderbird can keep control of the saving process,
can react and do extra things if a file of the same name already exists (e.g.
prompt the user for a different filename and allow them to cancel), and it
doesn't have to create a temporary file to pass to the file manager via a uri
link.

The following file managers, at least, support XdndDirectSave0 as drop targets:
 * Nautilus
 * Thunar
 * xfdesktop4
 * rox-filer

I imagine dolphin in KDE4 would support it too.

The file-roller code ( apt-get source file-roller ) and 'gtksavebox.c' in
ROX-CLib ( http://sourceforge.net/projects/rox/files/ROX-CLib/2.1.10/ ) are
examples of how to to it in C. I can be more specific on request.

In response to comment 88 (by karlt), explicit support isn't needed in
GDK: see the source code examples I link to above.

[Bug 858392] Re: Creative Live! Cam Video IM Image Corrupted

2012-04-02 Thread Nick Booker
Sorry, it does seem to be OK now in Ubuntu Oneiric, in that it now
starts off dark but then brightens into colour without corruption in
about 30 seconds - I guess I should put that down to the camera
adjusting itself to light levels rather than a kernel bug.

So I'd guess it was fixed at some point with a post-release kernel
update - I can't pinpoint exactly when.

[Bug 882710] Re: Monitor(s) black out and session freezes. NVRM: GPU at 0000:01:00.0 has fallen off the bus.

2012-02-15 Thread Nick Booker
Ditto here - both screens go blank in Unity if I try to enable external
monitor from the Nvidia settings dialogue box.

I've also noticed that any windows that are minimised at the time I
attempt to activate the second monitor won't restore when I click their
Unity launcher icons or alt-tab once the display has returned back to
normal. The top panel displays the name of the app, but the window
itself doesn't appear. The only way around that seems to be to force-
quit and re-open the program (or log out and back in).

If I enable twinview the same way under Xfce the twinview feature works
perfectly.

Re: [Bug 525040] Re: Installer ignores boot loader device

2010-02-23 Thread Nick Booker
I ran apport-bug ubiquity from the installer disc, to get the right
version info etc, because I don't know if there are side-effects of
installing ubiquity in an installed environment.

Do you want me to collect some info from the installed environment?

On 22 February 2010 23:52, Colin Watson cjwat...@canonical.com wrote:
 This doesn't look like a syslog file from a completed installation run;
it only goes up to language selection, right at the start of the

Any chance you could reproduce this with ubiquity in debug mode?  You
can do this by running 'ubiquity -d' in a terminal window; once the
installation has completed, we need /var/log/syslog, /var/log/partman,
 and /var/log/installer/debug.  Thanks in advance.

[Bug 525386] [NEW] GDM restarts once after boot in Lucid

2010-02-21 Thread Nick Booker
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gdm

After a fresh boot of Lucid, installed from a daily live image, GDM
appears for a few seconds (just long enough to click my username and
start typing my password), then disappears and re-loads to a blank login
screen, so I have to start the login process again.

Subsequent logouts, switch user etc are not affected -- this only occurs
once when the system has been freshly booted.

My current driver is nvidia, but it also happened with the default Free
Software driver for this card before I installed the binary one (I'm not
sure whether the default is nv or nouveau).

[Bug 525029] [NEW] Boot loader device drop-down doesn't change field

2010-02-20 Thread Nick Booker
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: ubiquity

In the latest daily build (20th January) the Advanced Options dialogue
box on the final page has, as usual, a combo box to select the boot
device, under the title Device for boot loader installation:.

However, picking a device (/dev/sda12, which is the root partition in this
case) doesn't update the display in the text box; as I would expect it to.
I can edit the device path manually as per a normal text box though.

[Bug 525033] [NEW] During installation Error informing the kernel about modifications to partition /dev/XXX -- Device or resource busy

2010-02-20 Thread Nick Booker
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: ubiquity

During installation a dialogue box appears with the following text:
Error informing the kernel about modifications to partition /dev/sda2 --
Device or resource busy. This means Linux won't know about any changes you
made to /dev/sda2 until you reboot -- so you shouldn't mount it or use it in
any way before rebooting.

Screenshot attached.

If I click Ignore, the installer pops up the same dialogue except
referring to /dev/sda3. The installer then continues after clicking
Ignore on that one.

Both /dev/sda2 and /dev/sda3 on my system are Unix partition types, which may
shed some light:
 sda2: FreeBSD
 sda3: Solaris

[Bug 525040] [NEW] Installer ignores boot loader device

2010-02-20 Thread Nick Booker
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: ubiquity

I specified an alternative device manually (/dev/sda12 which is the root
partition I installed Ubuntu to) for the GRUB boot loader in the
Advanced dialogue, however the installer installed GRUB to /dev/sda.

This may be related in some way to #525029 I reported earlier, but isn't
exactly the same problem.

Booting into the newly-installed Lucid and manually installing with
grub-install worked, however I need to use the --force option. I've attached a
transcript of my shell session for doing that.
EDIT: Despite the warnings, I can then chainload to /dev/sda12 from another
GRUB installation and boot Lucid via its own GRUB with no problems.

[Bug 508524] Re: Quadrapassel display corrupted (black and white vertical stripes)

2010-01-17 Thread Nick Booker
Have just updated my installation on both my laptop and the KVM.

The graphics are fine on the laptop (IBM x41 with Intel graphics), but
still the same corruption on the VM.

Does that mean this could be an X issue?

[Bug 508524] [NEW] Quadrapassel display corrupted (black and white vertical stripes)

2010-01-16 Thread Nick Booker
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gnome-games

Quadrapassel, when opened, shows black and white vertical stripes
instead of the game board and next tile box.

Starting a new game merely animates these stripes.

In case this has any bearing, this is running the latest daily live ISO,
under a KVM virtual machine.

I've included a screenshot of the window taken from within the VM.

[Bug 329401] Re: Update hangs with filesystem full - Not mentions which

2009-08-10 Thread Nick Booker
Presuming you can still log into the machine, it's worth first becoming root:
 sudo -i

As asked in comment #2, please post the output of:
 df -h

Then, look at the sizes of the directories in your root filesystem:
 cd /
 du -x --max-depth=1 . | sort -nr

That will give you a summary of the disk usage in the directories
directly under /, sorted with the largest first, in a file named du.out
in /tmp. Please post that output.

This should give you some idea of what's using the most of the space on /.
Of course, you should check that /home is in fact on a separate filesystem with
the command:
 mount

If your /home directory is in fact in the root partition, look out
particularly for large .googleearth directories (if you have it) and
.xsession-errors files in users' home directories.

Please report back your findings. Definitely don't go deleting files
anywhere unless you are 100% sure they're not needed. If you don't know
what the files do, leave them alone and ask.

[Bug 330424] Re: process consumes all ram, reading X keyboard settings over and over again

2009-03-16 Thread Nick Booker
OK, I think it's worth trying to find out which libraries are in common
between the applications that are causing trouble.

Could you post the files resulting from:
 ldd /usr/bin/vlc vlc.ldd
 ldd /usr/bin/k9copy k9copy.ldd
 ldd /usr/bin/virtualbox virtualbox.ldd

This might help narrow down our search. Could you also attach the
strace from virtualbox?

[Bug 272457] Re: By default, firefox won't open some txt files

2009-02-24 Thread Nick Booker
Some further debugging if it helps...
Perhaps the below is unrelated - it appears more of a side effect or another
bug uncovered by the presence of the original.

I can open and read the file downloaded to /tmp in vi or gedit.

If I double-click the entry in Firefox's Downloads manager (which is marked as
Failed by the way), the file attempts to re-download and then I get a different
error:
/tmp/UbuntuCodeofConduct-1.0.1.txt could not be saved, because you cannot
change the contents of that folder.

Change the folder properties and try again, or try saving in a
different location.

So checking permissions...
/tmp has drwtrwtrwt.
/tmp/UbuntuCodeOfConduct-1.0.1.txt is, for some reason, read-only:
-r 1 nick nick 4606 2009-02-21 17:50 /tmp/UbuntuCodeofConduct-1.0.1.txt

A chmod u+w /tmp/UbuntuCodeOfConduct-1.0.1.txt, and double-click on the
file entry in the Downloads list again, a new entry appears in the
Download list, not marked as failed this time, and if I then double-
click that the file opens in gedit, as I would have expected.

My boss John has looked at this, and found that if you manually specify
gedit or gvim as application (by clicking the drop-down and selecting
Other...) the appropriate app opens the file successfully.

[Bug 332868] Re: Conflict in Terminal result

2009-02-22 Thread Nick Booker
It looks from the wvdial output like you're connected. If you are
having trouble browsing, it could be that Network Manager isn't noticing
the connection made by wvdial and is setting Firefox to offline mode.

If this is the problem you are trying to describe, if you connect using
wvdial as you have been doing, then open firefox and make sure that
Work Offline on the File menu is *not* checked, you should be able to
browse.

The DISABLED ethernet interface is nothing to do with your wireless
broadband interface, and can be ignored. That is related to your wired
network port.

Please post whether or not this answers your question, so we can pursue
or close this bug as appropriate.

[Bug 301524] Re: thinkpad brightness controls reversed (please implement fix from fedora dudes)

2009-02-21 Thread Nick Booker
My results on Intrepid...

I installed apw's kernel on an SL300 type 2738-53G running Intrepid, and
it disabled brightness adjustment completely, both with keys and with
the Gnome brightness applet.

e...@ubuntu:~$ cat /proc/acpi/video/VGA/LCDD/brightness
not supported

The current Intrepid kernel has reversed brightness keys.

Going for lunch now...

[Bug 319347] Re: Dialup connection too slow.

2009-02-21 Thread Nick Booker
If you haven't paid linuxant for the hsfmodem driver, the speed will be
limited.

You have to pay linuxant for a license key before you can get the full
speed, or alternatively buy a full-hardware modem (few and far between
nowadays, but a serial one will almost definitely work).

See http://www.linuxant.com/drivers/, from which I quote:
# a free version (limited to 14.4Kbps data), available at no cost. Please use
it to test if your hardware is compatible.
# a full version (with 56K and FAX), available for a modest price.

p.s. I hope my guessed translation for the title was correct - apologies if not.

[Bug 303496] Re: CD audio open closes CD-ROM

2009-02-21 Thread Nick Booker
It's worth checking whether your PATA devices' master and slave settings
are correct. If they're set to cable select, try setting their
master/slave jumpers manually - the cable select may be playing up.
