[Bug 1392067] [NEW] Laptop wakes up while lid remains closed – seemingly not in response to any input

2014-11-12 Thread Niels Ganser
Public bug reported:

While suspend and resume works fine in principle, my Acer Aspire V5
(573G-54218G1Taii) will occasionally wake up even while its lid remains
closed. There are no ethernet cable or external input devices connected
and this happens even if the laptop is completely unattended; i.e. this
does not seem to happen in response to any "stimuli".

I so far did not manage to figure any pattern in when it wakes up, but
it seems to happen every day (with the laptop having been closed 6–20
hours before).

[Bug 1391476] Re: [MacBookPro11,1] Laptop wakes up while lid closed

2014-11-12 Thread Niels Ganser
I may be seeing the same issue. My laptop suspends fine and also wakes
up without a problem – however it occasionally wakes up even if the lid
remains closed. There are no ethernet cable or external input devices
attached. I'll try to attach log information via apport.

I see a potentially similar issue, but the offending option is `-c aes-

[Bug 769274] Re: Phonon default capture device preferences are not saved

2011-05-13 Thread Niels Ganser
Interestingly, audio device preferences for playback streams *are*
correctly persisted, it's just the capture device ordering that isn't
saved.

Jockey seems to install proprietary nvidia driver but X fails to

[Bug 669253] Re: Nvidia proprietary driver unable to initialize

2011-05-02 Thread Niels Ganser
I have precisely the same problem (though using Kubuntu).

Jockey seems to install the driver without problems but after a reboot,
X can not load it ("Failed to initialize GLX extension (Compatible
NVIDIA X driver not found)") and jockey reports "active but not
currently in use". I.e. the kernel module is loaded but the X driver
doesn't seem to be.

Apport information follows.

Thanks for sharing your workaround, Andy.

`hidd --search` successfully connects the device but in contrast to your
case, this doesn't persist in mine.

For the record and further debugging, here's the hcidump of the
successful connection through hidd:

[Bug 686433] [NEW] MS IntelliMouse Explorer doesn't pair

When running `bluedevil-wizard` from a terminal, the only error
displayed is 'Error response: "Authentication Failed"'.

Other input devices, a MS keyboard and a Logitech mouse, work fine.

Any ideas?

In my case this turned out to be caused by wrong /etc/group permissions.

H.i.M: Could you please see if "sudo adduser `whoami` audio && sudo

[Bug 490335] [NEW] nepomukservicestub floods .xsession-errors

2009-11-30 Thread Niels Ganser
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: kdebase-runtime

I've just noticed that my .xsession-errors grows unstoppably under
Kubuntu Karmic. Of course this file gets recreated upon a reboot but I
only do this occasionally and in any case, growth of of around 1GB/24
hours surely isn't desirable.

nepomukservicestub seems to be the main culprit with at least 80% of
xsession-errors' lines being attributed to it. There's three distinct
types of errors that results in tens of thousands of log messages each:

[/usr/bin/nepomukservicestub] "/usr/bin/nepomukservicestub(4982)" Error
in thread 140420159203600 : "org.freedesktop.DBus.Error.UnknownObject -

and

with a dump of the referenced file following these messages.

this.

[Bug 485351] Re: Under Kubuntu Karmic no two applications can output sound at the same time

2009-11-23 Thread Niels Ganser
I haven't yet come across an application that doesn't have this problem.
Out of the top of my head, among the applications I use regularly are
vlc, amarok, npviewer.bin (playing flash videos through firefox), dragon
player, kde system notifications.

Attached you'll find my phonondevicesrc which hopefully includes
information helpful in debugging this. In the phonon configuration
frontend, there's two devices listed (in that order): HDA Intel (ALC889A
Analog), PulseAudio. Xine is the only available backend.

2009-11-19 Thread Niels Ganser
Daniel, I had reported this against alsa-base as recommended by you in
bug #447844. Hopefully it is filed more appropriately now.

The problem is definitely not application specific. No matter which two
applications try to output sound, only the first one ever succeeds.

[Bug 485351] [NEW] Under Kubuntu Karmic no two applications can output sound at the same time

2009-11-19 Thread Niels Ganser
Public bug reported:

Since updating from jaunty to karmic, no two applications can output
sound simultaneously.

E.g. the first application to start outputting sound will work just fine
but all applications afterwards are damned to be mute. This holds true
for KDE (e.g. amarok) as well as non KDE (e.g. firefox and vlc)
applications.

I don't have pulseaudio installed (though libpulse0 is installed) as it
has been recommended since Kubuntu Jaunty to remove it.

Here's the output of `sudo fuser -v /dev/dsp* /dev/snd/* /dev/seq*` when
amarok, firefox and vlc were running (amarok the one lucky enough to be able to
output sound):
 USERPID ACCESS COMMAND
/dev/snd/controlC0: niels 3543 F kmix
 root 4582 F pommed
/dev/snd/pcmC0D0p: niels 4468 F...m amarok

As was to be expected, the same command's output when firefox is playing sound:
 USERPID ACCESS COMMAND
/dev/snd/controlC0: niels 3543 F kmix
 root 4582 F pommed
/dev/snd/pcmC0D0p: niels 4870 F npviewer.bin

I haven't messed around with phonon configuration yet but presumably
that's were the problem would lie?

[Bug 305750] Re: Subwoofer not working in Intel Macbooks

2009-11-19 Thread Niels Ganser
Thanks, David.

linux-backports-modules-alsa-karmic does indeed fix the issue on my
Macbook 3,1 running karmic. The backport also fixes headphone detection
trouble, e.g. speakers are now reliably muted when something is plugged
into the headphone jack.

This can probably be closed as fix committed though ALSA still tracks
the issue as "new", presumably due to a lack of positive test reports.

[Bug 455969] Re: reading database slow since upgrading to karmic

2009-11-19 Thread Niels Ganser
*** This bug is a duplicate of bug 398870 ***
https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/398870

This is *not* a duplicate of #398870.

I have never experienced this issue with *any* *previous* *version* of
Ubuntu yet it occurred immediately after updating to karmic. Thus I must
assume that it is caused by something that changed between jaunty and
karmic. Please note that #398870 has been reported for jaunty which is
why don't agree with the duplicate status. Please remove it, Stepan.

dpkg --clear-avail had no noticable effect. --forget-old-unavail is
obsolete since karmic.

Eloy might be on to something though. I myself am using disk encryption
as well. I've got a logical LVM volume that is LUKS encrypted. This is
unencrypted on boot and fed back into LVM as a PV that hosts my ext4
partitions. The issue we are seeing might very well just be a symptom of
encryption related disk IO trouble with karmic.

Could you find any issues better describing that possible root cause,
Eloy?

[Bug 305750] Re: Subwoofer not working in Intel Macbooks

2009-06-30 Thread Niels Ganser
A fix for MacBook 3,1 has now been applied to the ALSA codebase. It's
commit 4afdf938d581df426de5161b33899db1f95b88de in alsa-kernel. E.g.
http://git.alsa-project.org/?p=alsa-
kernel.git;a=commit;h=4afdf938d581df426de5161b33899db1f95b88de

Would anyone like to take a stab at backporting this patch to ALSA
1.0.18 so it can be put into jaunty-updates?

[Bug 322210] Re: [needs-packaging] PPD for Dymo LabelWriter 400 not complete

2009-05-27 Thread Niels Ganser
The file linked to by Ben supports a wide range of devices including
(but not limited to):

- LabelManager 400
- LabelManager 450
- LabelPrinter 350
- LabelWriter 300
- LabelWriter 310
- LabelWriter 315
- LabelWriter 320
- LabelWriter 330
- LabelWriter 330 Turbo
- LabelWriter 400
- LabelWriter 400 Turbo
- LabelWriter Duo
- LabelWriter Duo Turbo

Even though manual installation is trivial, packaging this up should
hopefully be fairly straight forward as well. As far as I can see it's
all GPLed too. Awesomity all around!

[Bug 330268] Re: [needs-packaging] Ruby 1.9.1

2009-05-18 Thread Niels Ganser
It should be noted that 1.9.1 is already available in Debian

With the recent release of the new version that donpdonp has pointed
out, they are already lacking behind though.. :)

2009-05-18 Thread Niels Ganser
I've just spent some time trying to debug weird exceptions thrown by my
programs until I realized that Ubuntu comes with 1.9.0 which, as others
have pointed out, has never been considered a stable release..

So +1 on backporting 1.9.1. Ideally not only into jaunty but also the
latest LTS release.

[Bug 237336] Re: strigidaemon doesn't start when "Nepomuk Semantic Desktop" is enabled in KDE4.1Beta1

2009-05-14 Thread Niels Ganser
nulll,

presumably you have the same problam as other's reporting the same
error: namely nepomuk falsely tries to use the redland storage backend
instead of sesame. Could you please attach your ~/.xsession-errors, if
present?

I am stabbing in the dark a little here but try the following to make strigi
work for you:
sudo aptitude reinstall soprano-backend-sesame && sudo dpkg-reconfigure
soprano-backend-sesame

If this does not help, please also paste the output of
cat .kde/share/config/nepomukserverrc

Thank you!

[Bug 280997] Re: solid-bluetooth needs update for bluez 4.x

2009-01-16 Thread Niels Ganser
frapell: It's great that you want to assist in fixing this! You will
probably have more success offering your help in
https://bugs.kde.org/show_bug.cgi?id=172267 though, as this essentially
is a KDE bug. In https://bugs.kde.org/show_bug.cgi?id=172267#c8 Tom
references the repository experimental code can be found in that has
already partially been ported.

It would also help if every one of us voted an the KDE bug so that it
gets fixed in the 4.2 release.

SRELysian: I guess this bug doesn't really move forward simply because
no (K)Ubuntu developer is personally affected. Don't get me wrong, I am
as frustrated about this as you are but after all, all our days only
have 24 hours so I'm not sure it makes sense to be angry at the
developers (be it (K)Ubuntu or KDE).

Clearly, this issue sneaked in shortly before the final move to KDE 4
and once it came up, the transition was already too far progressed to
stop it with the release coming too soon to fix it in time. So now we're
just stuck with it. Hopefully only until KDE 4.2 though :)

[Bug 247148] Re: Xen dom0 kernel corrupts software raid (2.6.24-19)

2008-11-13 Thread Niels Ganser
Sorry for spamming your inboxes, just wanted to confirm that Amit's
patch fixed the issue for me.

Previously I constantly ran into "Out of SW-IOMMU space" errors with my
SATA controller ("ATI Technologies Inc SB600 Non-Raid-5 SATA"). Since
applying the attached patch to the 2.6.24-21-xen kernel of my up-to-date
hardy installation, I can not reproduce this error!

Hopefully this can be included into hardy-updates.

Thanks again, Amit!

[Bug 247148] Re: Xen dom0 kernel corrupts software raid (2.6.24-19)

2008-11-13 Thread Niels Ganser
Thank you for your efforts, Amit!

Is anybody else running a kernel with the mentioned patch? I will try it
myself in the coming days and report back here.

Why though is this seemingly ignored by the Ubuntu kernel team? 2.6.24
is the hardy kernel and hardy being a LTS release, shouldn't its kernels
get fixed even if the bugged feature (e.g. xen dom0 support) has been
dropped in the next release?

[Bug 280997] Re: solid-bluetooth needs update for bluez 4.x

2008-10-25 Thread Niels Ganser
How on earth is bluez-gnome not an option? I can't fathom why something
(a bluetooth GUI!) many people have used for all of the recent releases
should be stripped out completely if there's a perfectly fine solution
available. Now if there's a serious *functional* problem when using
bluez-gnome, that's a different story!

But it appears to be just a "vanity" issue, does it not? In that case I
would strongly suggest going with bluez-gnome until there's a working
KDE counterpart available. It's not like this would be the first
transitional package of all times..

Of course I completely agree with Christian's last 3 sentences. We
should never have been in this situation in the first place. But we are
now and simply looking the other way won't help.

Bottom line is this: not having a bluetooth GUI of some sort is a
*defect* for many users. Using one of a different desktop environment
most likely wouldn't even be noticed..

As a last thought: if the concern is that a gnome component would
require too many libs that take away hard drive space, then how about
popping up a window saying "hey, HAL has detected a bluetooth adapter.
would you like to install bluez-gnome, requiring X mb on your hard
drive?"

[Bug 280997] Re: solid-bluetooth needs update for bluez 4.x

2008-10-13 Thread Niels Ganser
I don't mean to "litter" this bug report but isn't bluez 4.x completely
unsupported by kdebase-workspace upstream? If so, is somebody working
together with upstream developers on getting this done until Intrepid
release? I don't think Kubuntu 8.10 should ship without apparent
bluetooth support so a compromise might be to let Kubuntu install bluez-
gnome until native support is there..

[Bug 132271] Re: [GUTSY] cpu freq scaling not working anymore

2007-10-27 Thread Niels Ganser
I could "solve" this issue by resetting my BIOS (version 1.08) to
optimal defaults on my Uniwill 259IA. So reports of a buggy BIOS causing
this seem to be right. However, I think it might still be sensible to
hardcode some frequency tables into the kernel as a fallback since many
people don't even know what a BIOS is and for those who do, a BIOS
update still is a very, very scary thing.
