[Bug 686566] [NEW] GTK tooltips appear only after the mouse is moved

2010-12-07 Thread Noam Yorav-Raphael
Public bug reported:

Hello,

On all GTK tooltips, if the mouse goes to a place on the widget in a
single movement, the tooltip won't show until it is moved again.

This is very noticable when trying to view XKCD's alt-text on Chrome
(which uses native GTK tooltips), but the behavior is the same for all
tooltips - see the attached video of the applications menu.

Thanks,
Noam

[Bug 664330] [NEW] Don't hide the option for removing the ubuntu one ribbon

2010-10-21 Thread Noam Yorav-Raphael
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: nautilus

Hello,

I upgraded to Maverick, to see a big red band on top of some of my
folders saying that they are not synchronized with Ubuntu One. They look
alarming, and take up a lot of rare vertical space. I tried clicking on
them, but they give no hint on how to make them go away (except for
synchronizing with Ubuntu one, I guess...) I looked through the view
menu, and found no mention of this ribbon. I had to search forums in
order to find that File-Ubuntu One-Hide Ribbon does it.

Really, add a button on the ribbon to hide it. It doesn't smell well
when a commercial product grabs so much attention and doesn't let me
remove it.

Also, there's no point in suggesting to synchronize the downloads
folder, even if I were using Ubuntu One.

Thanks,

[Bug 599043] [NEW] Window list hover highlighting is confusing in Ambiance

2010-06-27 Thread Noam Yorav-Raphael
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gnome-themes-ubuntu

Hello,

This is a usability problem. I'm using the ambiance theme for over a
month, and I keep finding myself clicking a window in the window list
which is already active, thus minimizing it, instead of clicking the
window I want to show.

I think that this is because the highlighting a window button gets when
the mouse hovers over it is much stronger than the highlighting a button
has if its window has focus. This means that before clicking a button,
since it is always highlighted, it's very hard to tell whether I'm going
to show it (if it doesn't have focus) or hide it (if it has). It isn't
obvious whether another button is highlighted, because focused and
unfocused windows have roughly the same highlighting.

I suggest to disable hover highlighting completely, and show clearly,
using persistent highlighting, whether a window has the focus or not.
Perhaps the color of the border or the text could be changed when the
mouse hovers over a button, as long as it remains clear which window has
the focus.

I hope this can at least be checked. I'm really not a novice, so if I
keep doing the same mistake over and over then maybe something is wrong
about the design.

Thanks,
Noam

I'm not using lucid, but I'm not even sure that Bernhard is talking
about the same bug as most of us. The problem is about applets not
loading, not about the weather applet not updating.

Anyway, since this bug comes and goes, and nobody knows what's causing
it, closing it because of one report that it stopped happenning is too
hasty.

My guess is that it's a timing problem: apps assuming the panel was
already loaded when in fact it hasn't been loaded yet, or something like
that. I think that that's the reason why if I log out and log in again
it works fine: libraries were already loaded, so starting up the
environment is faster so the problem doesn't happen. It also explains
why people with faster computers (the ubuntu team, perhaps) haven't
experienced it.

2010-01-26 Thread Noam Yorav-Raphael
It was quite a long time ago, but I think that I just opened the file
with Python - something like:

sudo python
f = open('/dev/something', 'rw+')
f.seek(somewhere)
s = f.read(512)
f.seek(0)
f.write(s)
f.close()

I'm writing this to illustrate what I think I did - so please check
before you do something.

I can say by personal experience that It has not been fixed in Karmic.
Since it isn't clear what causes this problem, the fact that it doesn't
reveal itself for someone on Lucid doesn't necessarily mean that it was

[Bug 451071] [NEW] Screen backlight doesn't come on when using kernel mode setting, intel

2009-10-14 Thread Noam Yorav-Raphael
Public bug reported:

Hello,

I just upgraded to Karmic. After I closed my laptop screen (which causes
the backlight to come off) and opened it again, the screen would come up
with no backlight, which lets you see nearly nothing of the screen. The
same happened when resuming from suspend, and sometimes when the screen
was off automatically to save energy.

I switched kernel mode setting off (added nomodeset to the kopt line
in /boot/grub/menu.lst) and now it works ok.

Thanks,
Noam

[Bug 450779] Re: xorg freeze when starting firefox

2009-10-14 Thread Noam Yorav-Raphael
Ok. I have a bunch of possibly related problems, and haven't yet managed
to sort them out.

Sometimes I get applet error messages (even after removing dropbox), and
sometimes I don't.
Sometimes opening firefox freezes the desktop, and sometimes it doesn't.

As I reported, starting another application (terminal) has never caused
a freeze.

Starting firefox from the menu instead of by using the panel button
hasn't caused a freeze.

Starting firefox from the panel button after opening the window hasn't
caused a freeze, but I haven't tried it a lot.

*Perhaps* a freeze didn't happen when I disabled kernel mode setting,
but I'm not sure.

For now, I'll continue with no kernel mode setting and no dropbox. If
the freeze happens again, I'll report.

[Bug 164932] Re: Suggestion for a new keyboard map

2009-10-14 Thread Noam Yorav-Raphael
Can you elaborate on what information is missing?
vkeybd has a default keyboard map which isn't very efficient. I wrote another
one. If you put it in ~/.vkeybdmap it gives you a better keyboard map. I
suggest that it becomes the default one.

I just checked with Karmic. vkeybd includes the same default keymap
which it had then.

[Bug 450782] Re: [IBM 2371H4G] late resume failure

2009-10-14 Thread Noam Yorav-Raphael
I managed to fix it!

I did two relevant things. I don't know which did it.
1. I completely removed qemu and kqemu-source.
2. I added a file /etc/initramfs-tools/conf.d/resume with RESUME=UUID=uuid of
swap device.

[Bug 450763] [NEW] problem when loading panel applets after boot without login screen

2009-10-13 Thread Noam Yorav-Raphael
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gnome-panel

Hello,

I just upgraded to karmic. Every time I log in (which happens without a
login screen, automatically to my user), I get a bunch of message
windows saying that applets don't load. They say The panel encountered
a problem while loading OAFIID:GNOME_IndicatorApplet. Do you want to
delete the applet from your configuration? (a different name for each
applet, of course.)

If I log out and log in again, they appear as normal.

Thanks,
Noam

[Bug 450779] [NEW] xorg freeze when starting firefox

2009-10-13 Thread Noam Yorav-Raphael
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: firefox-3.5

Hello,

After upgrading to Karmic, when I login I see a lot of error messages about
panel applets not being loaded (see bug #450763).
If I *don't* close those windows, and start firefox from the icon I have on the
panel, X freezes - the mouse moves, but pressing it is ignored. Pressing caps
lock changes the state of the LED, but keyboard presses are ignored. I can
press ctrl+alt+F1 and kill X manually.

If I first close the message windows, it works fine.
If I start another application, it works fine (I started a terminal from
another button, and it was ok.)

I have an IBM X40 laptop.

Thanks,
Noam

[Bug 450782] [NEW] [IBM 2371H4G] late resume failure

2009-10-13 Thread Noam Yorav-Raphael
Public bug reported:

I tried to hibernate. The computer seemed to have hibernated
successfully, but when I turned it on again, it did a normal boot, as
though I haven't hibernated.

This was the state for a long time. I tried it to see if it's different
in Karmic, but it wasn't.

Thanks,
Noam

resuming properly. The resume processing hung very near the end and will have

2009-10-10 Thread Noam Yorav-Raphael
Public bug reported:

After installation using dist-upgrade tool, I chose not to restart the
computer. Then it logged in again automatically, and got stuck (mouse
not moving, nothing responding). Perhaps this report is about this.

[Bug 446645] [NEW] Dist-upgrade to 9.10 stops installation for a non important question

2009-10-08 Thread Noam Yorav-Raphael
Public bug reported:

During upgrade to karmic, pam asked which services should be restarted, pausing
the installation process.
It seems rather pointless, as they will all be restarted after the upgrade.

This seems like a duplicate of bug 141309, but it was closed long ago,
so I post a new bug.

Thanks,
Noam

[Bug 402959] Re: hplip should depend on python-qt4 and python-qt4-dbus

2009-09-16 Thread Noam Yorav-Raphael
I confirm on Jaunty. I installed the printer, and it worked fine. I
tried to print a fax from the computer, and the job stayed in the queue
indefinitely, giving me no clue as to what the problem might be.

Afterwards, I run hp-fax from a terminal. At some point it got stuck,
and printed the following exception to the terminal:

Traceback (most recent call last):
File /usr/bin/hp-toolbox, line 246, in module
from ui4.devmgr5 import DevMgr5
File /usr/share/hplip/ui4/devmgr5.py, line 45, in module
from dbus.mainloop.qt import DBusQtMainLoop
ImportError: No module named qt

I installed python-qt4-dbus, and now everything works fine.
