[Bug 600987] [NEW] evolution fails to open URLs in a browser

2010-07-02 Thread Oernie
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: evolution

When I click on a URL in evolution, the error message 'Could not open
the link. Failed to execute child process midbrowser (No such file or
directory)' pops up. This problem is perfectly reproducible, it *always*
occurs when clicking on a URL in evolution.

I use evolution on my KDE desktop. Initially, I installed Kubuntu 9.10.

[Bug 596449] [NEW] Titlebars of all windows disappeared

2010-06-20 Thread Oernie
Public bug reported:

I installed Kubuntu 9.10, upgraded to 10.04, installed many gnome
packages, chose the Gnome desktop at the log-in, and worked a few days
with Gnome. Then suddenly the titlebars of all windows disappeared and
all windows are maximized (even the small windows e.g. for asking for a
password or so). Neither logging-out and re-logging-in nor restarting
the computer solved this problem. Then I logged in into KDE again but
also in KDE all title bars disappeared and all windows are maximized.
How can I get back my titlebars?

Scott,

Why do you change the status back to Invalid? Either the error message
is true (then there is a bug in ureadahead) or the error message is
wrong (then there is a bug in the reporting system). How can there be an

[Bug 484677] Re: init: ureadahead-other main process terminated with status 4

2010-02-15 Thread Oernie
Although the error message init: ureadahead-other main process
terminated with status 4 seems to be not related to errors that
prevents one from logging in, this error message is still shown on many
systems (on the 8th console, Ctrl-Tab-F8). It is shown on my system
although all file systems are on a single internal hard disk. Hence, I
don't think that these bug reports are invalid.

[Bug 483359] Re: scheduled fsck crashes preventing bootup

2009-12-01 Thread Oernie
I would not mark this issue as invalid, because I had this problem as
well and finally my system became even unusable (which is very bad since
I have to use it for my work). So, I had to re-install Kubuntu 9.10 and
everything runs fine now. Since this issue and a few other problems
occurred after upgrading from 9.04 (Jaunty) to 9.10 (Karmic), I think
that it is caused by a bug in the (dist-)upgrade procedure. BTW: I
originally installed Ubuntu 8.10 (Intrepid) on this computer, then
changed to Kubuntu and then upgraded to 9.04 (Jaunty). All this worked
fine but I mention it here, because the upgrade to 9.10 (Karmic) might
be affected by the previous upgrade. I have the non-working system still
installed on another partition. So please let me know if you have any
questions.

[Bug 484677] Re: init: ureadahead-other main process terminated with status 4

2009-12-01 Thread Oernie
I had the same (or at least similar) problem. On my computer (Dell
laptop D630, intel graphic) this error occurs at every boot. I get a
black screen with a white (non-flashing) underscore in the top-left so
that I cannot log in any more -- also the text/console login does not
work and even the failsafe mode fails. If I add the kernel option
i915.modeset=0 in GRUB to the failsafe mode, I still cannot log in
after boot but I can see the start-up messages, where the last line is
init: ureadahead-other main process (762) terminated with status 4.
Hence, I was really locked out from my own computer :-( So, I had to
re-install Kubuntu 9.10 and everything runs fine now. Since this issue
and a few other problems occurred after upgrading from 9.04 (Jaunty) to
9.10 (Karmic), I think that it is caused by a bug in the (dist-)upgrade

[Bug 483429] Re: Long waiting time after resume from suspend-to-RAM

2009-12-01 Thread Oernie
Since a bug in (K)Ubuntu made my Dell Latitude D630 laptop unusable (see
my comments to bug #483359 and bug #483429), I re-installed Kubuntu 9.10
(Karmic). Luckily, the problem does not occur in the newly installed
system. Since this issue (and a few other problems) occurred after
upgrading from 9.04 (Jaunty) to 9.10 (Karmic) and does not occur in a
freshly installed system, this problem is probably caused by a bug in
the (dist-)upgrade procedure.

BTW: I originally installed Ubuntu 8.10 (Intrepid) on this computer,

[Bug 483505] [NEW] Question for gnome-keyring password although it has not been set

2009-11-16 Thread Oernie
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gnome-keyring

I have Kubuntu-karmic (9.10) and now I want to use evolution on my KDE
desktop. After installing and starting evolution and filling-in my
account details (including the password), a message popped up and asked
for my gnome-keyring password, although I did not set a password for
gnome-keyring so far. Finally, I deleted (renamed) the folder
~/.gnome2/keyrings/; after deleting this folder, evolution asked me to
set a new password for gnome-keyring and everything seems to work fine
so far. However, this took me some time to figure out and some less
experienced users might not figure this out. So please fix this. Thanks!

[Bug 483359] Re: scheduled fsck crashes preventing bootup

2009-11-16 Thread Oernie
I managed to get a login-screen again (probably by booting from a Live-
CD, switching to the Ubuntu system by chroot, and removing and re-
installing the packages sreadahead and ureadahead), but I still see
on the 8th console (Ctrl-Alt-F8):

fsck from util-linux-ng 2.16
/dev/sda1: clean, [...]
fsck from util-linux-ng 2.16
 * Stopping the Firestarter firewall...
/dev/sda6: clean, [...]
init: ureadahead-other main process (924) terminated with status 4
 * Preparing restricted drivers...
[...]
   ...done.

Maybe this helps you to find the problem.

[Bug 483359] Re: scheduled fsck crashes preventing bootup

2009-11-15 Thread Oernie
I got the same (or at least similar) problem (error message) after my
last upgrade (kernel + sreadahead + new package ureadahead). However, on
my computer (Dell laptop D630, intel graphic) this error occurs at every
boot. I get a black screen so that I cannot log in any more -- also the
text/console login does not work and even the failsafe mode fails. If
I add the kernel option i915.modeset=0 in GRUB to the failsafe mode,
I still cannot log in after boot but I can see the start-up messages,
where the last line is init: ureadahead-other main process (762)
terminated with status 4. Hence, I am really locked out from my own
computer :-( Please help. Thanks, Arne.

[Bug 483429] [NEW] Long waiting time after resume from suspend-to-RAM

2009-11-15 Thread Oernie
Public bug reported:

The problem started after upgrading from Kubuntu-jaunty to kubuntu-
karmic. After resume from suspend-to-RAM, I have to wait a very long
time (approx. 1 minute) until can I do anything, because the computer
is reacting neither to the mouse nor to the keyboard. This happend on a
Lenovo ThinkPad T400 (with intel graphics). I did not find anything
suspicious in /var/log/pm-suspend.log.

On another computer (Dell Latitude D630, intel graphics), the same
problem occurred also after upgrading from Kubuntu-jaunty to Kubuntu-
karmic. However, on this computer, I found the line

/usr/lib/pm-utils/sleep.d/99video resume suspend : Returned exit code 1.

in /var/log/pm-suspend.log. Unfortunately, another (or a related?) bug
made this computer currently unusable (see my comment to bug #483359:
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/e2fsprogs/+bug/483359 ). I
hope that you can fix this. Thanks! Please let me know if you need
further imformation.

[Bug 297976] Re: kmail: cannot sign emails after upgradind to intrepid ibex

2009-01-28 Thread Oernie
Thanks for the hint. pinentry-qt was indeed not installed. However, installing
this did not solve the problem :-( Following the instructions on
http://developer.gauner.org/kmail-pgpmime/index.en.html (suggested above by
Volker Lanz) also did not solve the problem:
$ echo test | gpg -ase -r 0xDEADBEEF | gpg
works but kmail still does not ask for a passphrase :-( :-( :-(

2008-12-05 Thread Oernie
I have the same problem on another computer where Intrepid Ibex has been
newly installed (no upgrade): Kmail does not ask for a passphrase and
hence, I cannot sign my emails :-( Is there a workaround until this bug
has been fixed?

 dpkg -i *.deb

Thank you, Mekk, for posting this simple solution! It works great!

Anyway, I hope a KDE4 version of KDiff3 (or -- preliminary -- the old
KDE3 version and libkonq4_3.5.9) will be added to the universe
repository for Intrepid soon. KDiff3 is really the best diff and merge
utility on Earth!

[Bug 280762] Re: knetworkmanager under kde4 doesn't recognize the static IP connections that I have configured.

 Try editing /etc/NetworkManager/nm-system-settings.conf.

Thank you, Frank, for posting this solution. It works great!

I suggest that the Ubuntu team should change the default setting of managed
to true.
Or does this have any undesirable side effects?

(often twice in quick succession). Please tell me, if you need any files

Public bug reported:

After upgrading my Kubuntu to from Hardy Heron to Intrepid Ibex (KDE

[Bug 251649] Re: Firefox: Address line does not work

2008-07-25 Thread Oernie
I have a very similar problem: Sometimes when I write or copy a URL into
the address field and then press ENTER, Firefox does not react. I have
to close and restart Firefox to get rid of this problem. In contrast to
Björn, this problem occurs only from time to time on my machines, I do
not have many add-ons installed, and there is no output on the “Error
Console” (“Fehlerkonsole”) when I press ENTER. I have noticed this on
three different machines. All have Kubuntu 8.04 installed (one update
from older Kubuntus, two fresh installs). This morning I have updated
Firefox 3.0 to version 3.0.1 using the usual Kubuntu update procedure,
but I this problem occurred again.
