[Bug 1309076] Re: Chromium-custom title bar corrupt after maximize

2019-10-31 Thread Ogilvierothchild
I'm still seeing this behaviour on 18.04 LTS in both chromium and
google-chrome.

To workaround the issue, visit chrome://flags/ and search for "partial".
An option called "Partial swap" should appear, with a flag called "#ui-
disable-partial-swap". Set the associated dropdown to say "Disabled".
Then press "Restart" and let the browser restart itself. Then visit
chrome://gpu/ and verify that the last item in the first table under
"Version Information" is "Command Line", and than "--ui-disable-partial-
swap" appears in the list of commandline options.

For me this doesn't fix 100% of the problem, but makes it much better --
when maximizing the browser window, there isn't garbage at the top of
the window. On restoring the window, the problem (or a similar problem)
is still there, but simply mousing over it makes it go away; unlike
before, I don't need to run the mouse over sections of the window trying
to get it to repaint the whole width of the corrput area.

[Bug 1766837] Re: Multiload Indicator Applet "Network Activity" graphical corruption

2019-10-11 Thread Ogilvierothchild
I have the same issue, however, looking closely at the color preferences
for the network monitor, there is one called "gridlines" which
corresponds to the horizontal lines in the applet display. Presumably
the authors wanted a way to show changes in the scaling (vertical units)
and decided on adding these gridlines. So, one way to resolve most of
the visual annoyance would be the option to make the lines have an alpha
channel, i.e. the user can opt to make them transparent.

I have the same issue as the original poster, that the network monitor
applet display often shows a block of blue (or some other color that has
no business being there) in the monitor area.

[Bug 1166125] Re: Broken fonts for Gtk based applications

2014-11-22 Thread Ogilvierothchild
This package was somehow auto-installed in a release upgrade today from 14.04
to 14.10, and cost me most of the day trying to figure out why everything in X
was glitchy and crashing. The terminal looked like
http://askubuntu.com/questions/285836/letter-spacing-in-gnome-terminal

Even xterm would crash on ctrl-right-click, and these badly-spaced
strange characters appeared in almost every terminal emulator (xterm
worked, except for its menus). Font selection dialogs ground the
computer to a halt, and even the window manager titlebars were in a
wonky font. Yet, something was showing, so it was a lot of work to
investigate the entire stack of X11, Xft, fontconfig, freetype, pango,
gtk, etc to find what component was bad.

sudo apt-get purge pango-graphite

solved the problem. No idea how that package got installed, but it's
removal fixed everything immediately. There is a serious problem with
this package in the 14.10 release of ubuntu as well.

[Bug 1166125] Re: Broken fonts for Gtk based applications

2014-11-22 Thread Ogilvierothchild
Given that this package breaks the entire desktop in a non-obvious way,
the priority should be high. I'm a software developer and have used
linux as my daily OS since 1993 and it took me several hours to figure
out what was going wrong.

What are novice users going to do, other than install another OS, if
this bug strikes them? This bug makes all of X totally unusable.

[Bug 960728] [NEW] installation of Libreoffice-wiki-publisher hangs apt front end

2012-03-20 Thread Ogilvierothchild
Public bug reported:

I had libreoffice-wiki-publisher 1.1.1+LibO3.5.0-2ubuntu1 installed.

Upgrading packages (e.g. apt-get upgrade) completely failed -- all the
front ends I tried hung (apt-get, aptitude, and the gui system update).
No error message was given.

By installing only half the packages at a time, I narrowed down the
problematic package to just one,

libreoffice-wiki-publisher 1.1.1+LibO3.5.1-1ubuntu1

There is something in the packaging here that prevents any packages from
installing when this package is set to install.

I also noticed high CPU usage, but it never completed whatever it was
trying to do (although the CPU got hot).

Removing the package (e.g. marking it for removal in aptitude) clears up
the problem, although of course that feature is thereby disabled.

Worked with some of the maverick kernels, others showed a black box on

[Bug 197288] Re: New windows are put in the background when a window has Always on Top set

2010-08-27 Thread Ogilvierothchild
I forgot to mention that it doesn't matter if the always on top
setting is used on any window.

The particular use case that I experience routinely is that when in a
terminal window, gnome-terminal or xterm, then web browser windows
(firefox, konqueror, google-chrome) always appear in the background.
These browsers are started from clicks on the top panel toolbar.

[Bug 477963] Re: vlc 1.0.2 crop is not centered. Only the right side is cut (left is unchanged)

2010-08-08 Thread Ogilvierothchild
I see the same thing using the Xv output module and fglrx, this problem
of non-centering when crop is enabled, using Ubuntu 10.04 and VLC media
player 1.0.6 Goldeneye.

A work-around is to set the video output module in VLC to use OpenGL --
then the centering on crop is fine.

2010-07-18 Thread Ogilvierothchild
The following worked for me:

cd /etc/php5/cli/conf.d
sudo perl -pi.bk -e 's/(\s*)#/\1;/' *ini
sudo mkdir bk
sudo mv *.bk bk

Which only catches comments at the start of a line; also, backups of the
original files are in the /etc/php5/cli/conf.d/bk directory.

[Bug 549552] Re: [lucid] solid colour BG is transparent

2010-06-03 Thread Ogilvierothchild
I was proposing to make the background tab work just like this (Use
background settings from system theme). I'm not sure of how else to do
implement this when there are 2 sources for the background configuration
(gconf and gtkrc), without making it very fragile. The issue I have is
trying to work out where to take the configuration from (eg, if the user
selects transparent, should the transparency be set to the value of the
slider, or the value in the theme?)

This makes a lot of sense. The connection to the theme is really not
obvious at present.

+
+ After experimenting with many potential changes, including
+ - icewm version
+ - xorg version
+ - nvidia binary driver and nvidia kernel module versions
+ the only thing that fixed the problem was to run IceWM under the intrepid
kernel version.
+
+ Under 2.6.27-11-generic there is no problem, but under .28 just running
+ X and a window manager eats a full CPU and a lot of power.

[Bug 95444] Re: No Screen Backlight Control; Sony Vaio with nvidia 8 series graphics

2008-10-28 Thread Ogilvierothchild
** Description changed:

Using Ubuntu on Sony Vaio laptop with Nvidia 8 vga card:

There is no way to control backlight brightness on Sony Vaios with 8-series
adapters, e.g.
  nVidia Corporation GeForce 8400M GS
nVidia Corporation GeForce 8600M GT (rev a1)

The registers have been found (kudos to mikes!) and incorporated into
nvclock, which you can check out by anonymous cvs and install:

  ]$ sudo apt-get install cvs
  ]$ cvs -d:pserver:[EMAIL PROTECTED]:/cvsroot/nvclock login
  ]$ cvs -z3 -d:pserver:[EMAIL PROTECTED]:/cvsroot/nvclock co -P nvclock
  ]$ cd nvclock
  ]$ ./autogen.sh
  ]$ ./configure
  ]$ make
  ]$ sudo make install

To test, make sure you are using nVidia's proprietary driver, then:
  ]$ sudo nvclock -S 100
  ]$ sudo nvclock -S 15
  ]$ sudo nvclock -S +10

So far mikes' registers have been found to work on:
  8400M GS on VGN SZ650N, SZ61MN/B, SZ750N, SZ71MN/B
- 8400M GT on VGN FZ38M, FZ11Z, NR31, AR41E, FZ11S, FZ290, FZ250AE, FZ21E, FZ21M
+ 8400M GT on VGN FZ38M, FZ11Z, NR31, AR41E, FZ11S, FZ290, FZ250AE, FZ21E,
FZ21M, FZ470E
  8600M GS on VGN FZ31Z, FZ21Z
  8600M GT on VGN AR51SU, AR71S

Add your model to the list by clicking on the Update description /
tags link, NOT by asking in a bug comment for someone else to do it.

To get hotkeys to work, follow the instructions in this comment:
  https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/hotkey-setup/+bug/95444/comments/75

Dual-adapter models (SZ6 among others) can get backlight control with
the Intel adapter using xbacklight, and can get hotkey functionality as
  per bug #173652.

[Bug 182473] Re: rtl8187 drops connection

2008-06-12 Thread Ogilvierothchild
vervelover:

The solution you posted, from http://www.aircrack-
ng.org/doku.php?id=r8187 works for me.

However, this driver does not seem to recover from sleep mode, but
otherwise seems more stable so far (in a few hours of use).

Thanks.

[Bug 215576] [NEW] icewm doesn't show clock or battery status

2008-04-11 Thread Ogilvierothchild
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: icewm

Using 'icewm 1.2.33-1ubuntu2' on Hardy (2.6.24-8-generic and
2.6.24-15-generic kernels) the taskbar doesn't respect the
'TaskBarShowClock=1' directive in ~/.icewm/preferences -- no clock is
shown. This occurs whether using a selected font or using the simulated
LCD font (both TaskBarClockLeds=0 and TaskBarClockLeds=1 give the same
results).

I suspect this might be a font issue since the battery meter also fails
to display. I thought this may be some bios/acpi issue due to the power
meter not showing, but 'cat /proc/acpi/battery/BAT1/state', acpi(1), and
other gui programs seem fine. Probably also unrelated, the mail icon
fails to show up for 'icewm 1.2.33-1ubuntu2' (probably a theme issue).

Downgrading to 1.2.30-1ubuntu1 solves the problem, taskbar battery meter
and clock display normally.

[Bug 136308] Sound doesn't work on ATI SB450 HDA Audio using 2.6.20-16 kernel (but 2.6.20-15 works fine)

2007-08-31 Thread Ogilvierothchild
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: linux-source-2.6.20

Installed ubuntu on gateway mt6452 laptop.
Kernel version linux-image-2.6.20-15-generic.
Sound worked fine.
Performed update which got new linux-image-2.6.20-16-generic from the security

Sound stopped working -- my programs still saw the sound device and would get
valid data back from the audio device, but no sound plays from the speakers or
line out.
Reverted to linux-image-2.6.20-15-generic, audio works again.

[Bug 73913] looks for help docs in wrong place

2006-11-30 Thread Ogilvierothchild
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: esvn

The package looks for help documentation in /usr/share/doc/esvn/html-
docs, wheres esvn-doc installs them in /usr/share/doc/esvn-doc/html-
docs -- so by default nothing comes up. Of course this can be fixed by
ln -fs /usr/share/doc/esvn-doc/html-docs /usr/share/doc/esvn, but the
package should just look in the correct place in the first place.

[Bug 73920] cream looks for help docs in the wrong place

2006-11-30 Thread Ogilvierothchild
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: cream

Start cream, go to menu to open help. It doesn't work.

Now run sudo ln -fs /usr/share/doc/cream/html /usr/share/vim/cream
/docs-html, and the help system works. This is because cream looks in
the latter directory, rather than the former one (where the files are
installed to).

[Bug 71053] hddtemp in edgy doesn't work with ksensors

2006-11-09 Thread Ogilvierothchild
Public bug reported:

As a regular user, setting the sticky bit on `which hddtemp` gives access to
the drive temperature, which can be conveniently displayed in ksensors.

The versions in Dapper work fine.

In Edgy, the hddtemp program doesn't work with either the old or new
ksensors program, however downgrading hddtemp to Dapper solves the
problem.

This may be a problem that the output format has changed and ksensors
needs to update its parsing of hddtemp output.
