[Bug 299808] Re: No Atheros Wireless with Kernel 2.6.24-21-generic in 8.04 (hardy)
Thanks for your reply. After many updates, kernel 2.6.24-24-generic [currently at 2.6.24-24.56 from the Hardy - Proposed repository] became workable for me. It resumes from suspend/hibernate most of the time, Atheros wireless works except sometimes after resume from suspend/hibernateand ALSA sound works as well. But closed-source ATI driver does not work -- when I try to enable it and reboot, it still is not enabled. Would installing linux-backports-modules-hardy help with other things besides wireless (e.g. closed-source ATI driver, more reliable resume from suspend/hibernate)? On the other hand, are there any known risks to installing linux-backports-modules-hardy given my situation? -- No Atheros Wireless with Kernel 2.6.24-21-generic in 8.04 (hardy) https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/299808 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
[Bug 301934] Re: Brasero does not open saved Audio CD project
Thank you for the quick response. Does this mean that you are not seeing the same issue in Intrepid on your end? --Or would you like me to test this issue using Intrepid on my end? Can I test this using an Intrepid VM (e.g. in VirtualBox) without upgrading my main system to Intrepid? If so, then how? Here's why I'm asking: I'm just a home user with one computer. I've finally got a fairly stable system for my hardware using Hardy (and an older kernel - long story). Hardy is an LTS release. I was hoping that it would last me for a while without major OS upgrades. For this issue with Brasero, there is a work-around (re-creating the project manually). I would be very reluctant to upgrade my main system to Intrepid and risk my hard-won stability just to fix this issue. Thanks in advance for clarifying your question and how I can help. -- Brasero does not open saved Audio CD project https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/301934 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
[Bug 301934] [NEW] Brasero does not open saved Audio CD project
Public bug reported: Binary package hint: brasero lsb_release -rd Description:Ubuntu 8.04.1 Release:8.04 apt-cache policy brasero brasero: Installed: 0.8.1-0ubuntu2~hardy1 Candidate: 0.8.1-0ubuntu2~hardy1 Version table: *** 0.8.1-0ubuntu2~hardy1 0 500 http://archive.ubuntu.com hardy-backports/main Packages 100 /var/lib/dpkg/status 0.7.1-3ubuntu1 0 500 http://archive.ubuntu.com hardy/main Packages I created an Audio CD with Brasero. The CD consisted of two identical music tracks, transcoded from the same MP3 file (from an external USB drive, a Western Digital 1 TB My Book unit), with no 2-second break inserted between the tracks. The CD played OK, and all seemed well. I used Project Save As to save it as a Brasero audio project on the same drive and in the same folder as the original MP3 file. I closed Brasero and reopened it. On the Create a new project page, I clicked on the name of the project under Choose a recently opened project. The light on the USB drive came on and it seemed to have some activity, but then nothing happened. I inserted a blanc CD-R and waited for the system to mount it. Again, I clicked on the name of the project under Choose a recently opened project. The light on the USB drive came on and it seemed to have some activity, but then nothing happened. I clicked Audio project: Create a traditional audio CD. I used Project Recent projects to select the recent project. The light on the USB drive came on and it seemed to have some activity, but then I got kicked back out to the Create a new project page. Again, I clicked Audio project: Create a traditional audio CD. I used Project Open to open the recent project manually. The light on the USB drive came on and it seemed to have some activity, but then nothing happened. No tracks were shown in the right pane. The status bar at bottom right still showed Empty (1 h 20 free on CD-R). I added the MP3 file to the right pane manually again (twice, as before), and burned the CD-R successfully again. It would be very useful if opening a saved project worked, especially when creating more complex CDs, as it would save time on reassembling the files to be burned. Thanks in advance for your help. [Bug 242033] Re: Removing Sound Driver Should not Remove Entire Ubuntu Graphical User Interface (GNOME)
Thank you for clarifying the source of the problem. I am considering re- filing this bug against GDM and ubuntu-desktop. IMHO, they should not depend on any part of the sound system -- they are primarily graphical user interfaces, not audio user interfaces. Your proposed solution is ... to blacklist the module for your particular sound card. Unfortunately, this is easier said than done. Even finding the relevant module requires wading through the wiki at http://www.alsa-project.org (note: Step 3 of the According to the Comprehensive Sound Problem Solutions Guide at http://ubuntuforums.org/showpost.php?p=1191847postcount=1 seems to point to an outdated URL: http://www.alsa-project.org/alsa-doc/ is not a web page with a drop-down box but just a directory listing). Assuming that you know the relevant module, how do you blacklist it? Again IMHO, it would be helpful to have instructions that even a relative novice like me can follow, as this seems to be a major target audience for Ubuntu. In any event, thanks again for pointing me to the relevant packages against which this bug would be filed. -- Removing Sound Driver Should not Remove Entire Ubuntu Graphical User Interface (GNOME) https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/242033 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
[Bug 125250] Re: Don't recognise USB Pendrive - sr0: disc change detected.
This issue seems to be gradually getting fixed on my system (Dell Dimension 4700 with BIOS Rev. A10). In contrast wit the experience of Alessio Treglia's (see https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux- source-2.6.20/+bug/125250/comments/12 ), all of the USB problems seem to be resolved for me if I use kernel release 2.6.24-19-generic (Hardy). I'm not sure if one or more automatic update(s) have changed something. I have the Proposed repository enabled, and I always accept kernel- and driver-related updates. I've noticed that there have been quite a few changes to 2.6.24-19-generic that start out in Proposed and eventually make their way to Recommended. Even mounting the USB camera works in 2.6.24-19-generic for me, but only after following the instructions at http://ubuntuforums.org/showpost.php?p=4979460postcount=2 With kernel 2.6.20-16-generic (Hardy), everything seems to work, except that the USB camera importing errors out -- images are listed in F-Spot, but fail to actually import. I'm not sure if this is an issue in F-Spot or something to do with the more general USB bug that is the main topic of this discussion. (I can provide more details on the error if it would help.) I got into kernel issues originally due to Hibernate/Suspend problems, and unfortunately 2.6.24-19-generic still does not do it for me. For now, I boot into 2.6.24-19-generic if I need to import photos, and restart into 2.6.20-16-generic if I need to be able to Suspend/Hibernate. -- Don't recognise USB Pendrive - sr0: disc change detected. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/125250 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
[Bug 125250] Re: Don't recognise USB Pendrive - sr0: disc change detected.
I am forced to use Hardy with kernel 2.6.20-16-generic (later kernel versions result in no sound and/or no suspend/hibernate despite my best efforts so far). I confirm that I have an issue with mounting USB devices as well. I have a Dell Dimension 4700 with BIOS Rev. A10. Plugging in a Logitech USB mouse always works. Any external USB hard disks are mounted only if they are connected and turned on when the system starts up. But: 1. Plugging in external USB hard disks after system start-up results in very brief activity of the internal hard disk, as if the system notices something, but then nothing happens: no icon on the desktop or in My Computer. 2. Plugging in a camera via USB opens up f-spot manager, sometimes it asks about importing photos, sometimes it asks me to confirm the camera model (Canon SD 700 IS, which it calls Canon IXUS 800, I think), but in any event it always errors out with Error connecting to camera. Received error 'Could not claim USB device' while connecting to camera . 3. Plugging in an SD card via a USB card reader produces no results -- all of the USB card reader slots are shown as unable to mount or media empty -- format? despite the card being full of data. There are no USB problems when I boot the same computer into Windows XP (MCE, SP2) -- except that Windows had somehow lost the Safe Removal icon, so I need to shut down Windows full or or restart it to unmount any external USB storage devices. Mounting properly unmounted devices back in Hardy with kernel 2.6.20-16-generic only works for external USB hard disks, and only when they are already plugged in and turned on at start-up. lsusb Bus 001 Device 001: ID : Bus 003 Device 001: ID : Bus 004 Device 004: ID 046d:c01a Logitech, Inc. [Bug 242033] [NEW] Removing Sound Driver Should not Remove Entire Ubuntu Graphical User Interface (GNOME)
Public bug reported: Binary package hint: apt According to the Comprehensive Sound Problem Solutions Guide at http://ubuntuforums.org/showpost.php?p=1191847postcount=1 , Ubuntu (GNOME) users have reported that packages 'gdm' and 'ubuntu- desktop' are removed after removing the linux-sound-base packages. In particular, sudo apt-get --purge remove linux-sound-base alsa-base alsa-utils then requires sudo apt-get install gdm ubuntu-desktop Why does removing the sound driver remove the Graphical User Interface (GUI) for the operating system? IMHO, many places that may want a guaranteed quiet system (e.g. hospital, library) would still want to have a GUI. In any event, if you need to reinstall the sound driver, you should not lose your GUI and possibly file browser (nautilus). You should also not need to reboot a few times to correct some of these issues even after reinstalling the GUI. But then, I'm just a home user, not a software engineer. Please correct me if my opinion is wrong. In my case, I was still having problems with Login Screen control panel and sudo nautilus after doing this (see http://ubuntuforums.org/showpost.php?p=5229702postcount=11 ), though both issues seems to have corrected themselves after a few reboots. Reinstalling other packages may also be required, e.g. one user reported having to do sudo apt-get install gdm gnome-applets gnome-control-center gnome-panel gnome-session gnome-terminal nautilus ubuntu-base ubuntu-desktop ubuntu-minimal (see http://ubuntuforums.org/showpost.php?p=1259940postcount=68 ) Users have been reporting this issue in the Forums since 2006 (see last link above), but just in case there is no official bug report on this issue, I thought that I would file this. [Bug 226279] Re: Kernel 2.6.24-17 - broken resume from suspend to RAM
Steve Langasek, I confirm that I am forced to use 2.6.20-16 (I looked again: the last digit before the - is a 0, not a 4). All I know is that Suspend and Hibernate worked well in 7.10 (not just 7.04), but broke only after upgrading to Hardy. So if this is not a Hardy issue, then what is it? I just went back through every kernel in the GRUB menu until I found the latest one that still mostly worked for me, which happened to be 2.6.20-16 (though it does have some issues, like auto-rebooting after resume from suspend and Switch User -- plus today, refusing to mount USB storage devices like standard 2 GB SD cards from a card reader). I would like to ensure that this really is not a duplicate before opening another bug report. Unfortunately, 2.6.24-19 still does not work for me. Now what? I applied all the available updates that came up in Update Manager today (including all the items related to kernel 2.6.24-19), rebooted, selected 2.6.24-19 kernel in GRUB, and logged into my user account in GNOME. Alas, I had no Wireless, as the system did not connect with my Atheros-based card. I had to restart right away and go back to kernel 2.6.20-16, which is the last kernel that does both Wireless and Suspend/Hibernate (though the latter two are often very slow). But if I restart with 2.6.24-19-generic, then: I have no Wireless as mentioned above. Also, clicking on Network Monitor applet on the GNOME panel shows only SIOCGIFFLAGS error: No such device. [Bug 221213] Re: Regression: hibernate freezes the system
Correction to my previous post (https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux/+bug/221213/comments/15 ): kernel 2.6.20-16-generic, which is still in my GRUB list, does allow resume from Suspend and Hibernate. It works very slowly (not sure if there is a real advantage compared to full Shutdown/restart), and you get odd screen artifacts sometimes, but it does work. I should also mention that the (proposed?) 2.6.24-19-generic kernel is actually worse for me than 2.6.20-16-generic, because Suspend/Resume does not work in 2.6.24-19-generic (Hibernate/Resume works, but still very slowly). [Bug 226279] Re: Kernel 2.6.24-17 - broken resume from suspend to RAM
Update to my previous post (https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux/+bug/226279/comments/113 ): This morning, there were a number of items related to kernel 2.6.24-19-generic in my automated Update Manager list. I'm not sure which repository they were from (hardy-proposed or a more regular repository). I told the system to download and install all the updated. Oddly, there was no automated request to restart the computer. I restarted anyway, using the 2.6.24-19-generic entry in GRUB. Same result as before, though: Suspend/Resume does not work. Hibernate works but very slowly (not sure if there is a real advantage compared to full Shutdown/restart). Kernel 2.6.20-16-generic allows me to Resume from both Suspend and Hibernate, but again very slowly: see my post at https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux/+bug/221213/comments/18 -- Kernel 2.6.24-17 - broken resume from suspend to RAM https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/226279 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 226279] Re: Kernel 2.6.24-17 - broken resume from suspend to RAM
Good news: The -19 kernel in hardy-proposed fixed Resume from Hibernate for me (though it is slow, and progress bar looks frozen, it works). Bad news: Resume from Suspend is still broken for me. Details of what I did: I have a Dimension 4700 - BIOS Rev. A10, Atheros-based wireless card with restricted driver, no restricted ATI driver used. I removed previous version of -19 kernel and repository as per https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux/+bug/226279/comments/106 Figured out how to add hardy-proposed repository, (GUI method, but based on repository listing in http://ph.ubuntuforums.com/showpost.php?s=0d6286ee06bc8596c8a856a2247212e3p=4846197postcount=8 ), i.e.: System Administration Software Sources [administrator password] Third-Party Software tab Add deb http://archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu hardy-proposed main restricted universe multiverse Let Update Manager update the list of files. Ignored suggested application updates for now -- wanted to try new kernel first. So: Applications Accessories Terminal sudo apt-get install linux- image-2.6.24-19-generic linux-ubuntu-modules-2.6.24-19-generic linux- restricted-modules-2.6.24-19-generic Restarted computer. Selected the -19 kernel in GRUB Logged into my account and waited for GNOME to finish loading. Wireless and sound seemed to work this time. Tried System Quit Suspend Suspended quickly, but pressing Power button on computer to resume resulted in a blank screen with a blinking cursor, no keyboard, no mouse, no GUI, no Login. I waited a few minutes, but nothing was happening, not even disk activity. Restarted computer. Selected the -19 kernel in GRUB Logged into my account and waited for GNOME to finish loading. Tried System Quit Hibernate Shut down fairly quickly with a couple of error messages (sorry, they went by too fast -- are they saved in a log somewhere?). Pressing Power button on computer to resume resulted in a slow process to get the splash screen up, the progress bar moved back and forth a bit and then seemed to freeze, there was still sporadic disk activity, and then finally the Password prompt for my account came up, and I was able to log back into the GNOME GUI. It was slower than in Gutsy, and the frozen progress bar was not reassuring. On the plus side, wireless networking worked right away after the Resume. There is definite improvement overall, with at least Hibernate being possible again. Thanks you very much or all your work on this, and thanks in advance for looking into the Suspend issue further if possible. -- Kernel 2.6.24-17 - broken resume from suspend to RAM https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/226279 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
[Bug 221213] Re: Regression: hibernate freezes the system
Unfortunately, the above KISS method did not work for me. No previous kernel version that I tried from the GRUB menu was able to restore from Suspend properly. [Bug 45696] Re: NetworkManager can't find interface on resume from suspend
Thanks to everyone for all the info. I'm a bit confused about this issue being marked Fix Released though. Alexander Sack wrote (https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/network- manager/+bug/45696/comments/65) about seeing some improvements. I'm not clear what these improvements were. Reading the other comments above, it sounds like people keep having to use workarounds, e.g. disabling and re-enabling networking manually. Some people were even having this issue in Gutsy. That doesn't sound like the issue is really fixed IMHO. I still have this problem, too, occasionally, with the same chipset, WIRED Ethernet card: Intel Corporation, Device: 82562ET/EZ/GT/GZ - PRO/100 VE (LOM). Network device: eth0, Hardware address: 00:13:20:0e:ce:fb. I use DHCP networking via my wired router. I still have the same version of Ubuntu (Feisty) as before. [Bug 45696] Re: NetworkManager can't find interface on resume from suspend
I've tried the fix suggested by Matt Zimmerman on 2007-05-23 (see https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/network- manager/+bug/45696/comments/40 ), but unfortunately, it does not seem to help, at least not completely. I'm still getting the occasional lack of networking after resuming from Hibernate. (A bit less frequently, perhaps?.. It's a bit hard top tell because the original problem had been intermittent as well. Sorry about not keeping better statistics.). Moreover, when resuming from Suspend (not Hibernate), my computer just hangs sometimes, with a blinking white cursor at the top left of a black screen. Restarting with Ctrl-Alt-Del only gets me as far as the GNOME Loading Desktop splash screen before there is another freeze-up. Everything finally clears up after I restart X by doing Ctrl-Alt- Backspace. (The networking also seems to start working at that point.) Note: restarting X does not seem to help restore networking after resuming from Hibernate. It does sometimes help to use System Administration Network Configure, and change the Wired Connection Properties from DHCP to Local Zeroconf, and then back to DHCP again. This seems to work more consistently now than before I had tried the fix. To recap, I am using Ubuntu Feisty (fully updated) on a Desktop (DELL Dimension 4700). I have the following WIRED Ethernet card: Intel Corporation, Device: 82562ET/EZ/GT/GZ - PRO/100 VE (LOM). Network device: eth0. Hardware address: 00:13:20:0e:ce:fb. I use DHCP networking via my wired router. (Suspend or Hibernate only work when I use the open-source ati video driver, not the closed-source one that the Update Manager had recommended after upgrading to Feisty. I'm not sure if it's related, but I'm mentioning this just in case.) Many thanks to everyone who is working on this issue.
