I can confirm this in the recent release of Firefox 4. As Steve mentioned, it's easily reproducible simply by performing a Google Image search. This causes high CPU usage from the X server and on my computer at least, the display temporarily freezes. I'm running Arch Linux, with an Nvidia 8200M (notebook) video card. If I can help by providing more information, please just ask. So I'm late to the party but for posterity's sake, I fixed this by adding option snd_hda_intel index=-2 (where snd_hda_intel is the name of my internal sound card, which I want to use for capture but not for playback) to /etc/modprobe.d/alsa-base, and commenting out the similar line which applied to my USB sound device. Jan, you mentioned that you'd tried giving the new soundcard a lower priority, so maybe this didn't work for you but I thought I should record it here just in case. Ignore previous comment. It's early days yet, but installing "linux-backports-modules-[kernel version here]-generic" package from my package manager appears to have solved this. I use Skype daily and prior to this was unable to carry on a conversation without the internet disconnecting partway through - now for two days running I have had no problem with this and was even able to stream live video whilst Skyping last night with no connection loss (although it didn't do the Skype call much good!). Afraid not - I've tried adding and removing all the widgets, but my problem is that some of them take up more space than they need to - a slightly dodgy illustration would be that the system tray is this big |--| but it takes up this much space on the panel (which, when moving it, can be seen as a highlighted space around it) || The clock's even worse. I can confirm this, I'm using the 32 bit release of Hardy on an AMD64 machine (software problems, my computer doesn't work much differently on 64-bit anyway) and I've had the same problem.
