[Bug 1536487] Re: Unable to migrate pc-i440fx-2.4 KVM guest from QEMU 2.5.0 to QEMU 2.4.1

2016-09-14 Thread Paolo Bonzini
> Especially I found that the "created on Trusty, migrated to xenial

> it as well.

The first migration of the t->x->t sequence does not really matter (if
anything it could introduce _more_ bugs!), so if x->t is not supported
then neither is t->x->t.

The upstream QEMU project doesn't have the manpower to test and support
backwards migration. We try not to break it, and in this case there
was an easy fix and we suggest that Canonical backports it. However,
in general it's not guaranteed to work.

The fix is commit e6915b5f3a874a467a9a65f7ec1d6ef8d251a51a.

Fred, this bug is for STOP 0x101, not STOP 0x5c.

STOP 0x101 cannot be fixed by an upgrade. You have to disable the
watchdog using QEMU option hv_relaxed or the equivalent in libvirt.

Oops, I missed Chris's comment #28. Thanks.

From comment #23, the 1.4 machine type seems to be fast, while 1.3 is
slow. This doesn't make much sense, given the differences between the
two machine types:

enable_compat_apic_id_mode();

.driver   = usb-tablet,\
.property = usb_version,\
.value= stringify(1),\

.driver   = virtio-net-pci,\
.property = ctrl_mac_addr,\

.driver   = virtio-net-pci, \
.property = mq, \
.value= off, \

.driver   = e1000,\

[Bug 1155403] Re: virtio cdrom detected as hard disk

2013-03-18 Thread Paolo Bonzini
 It seems the installer does not consider virtio devices when doing its
search.

That's another bug in the installer then.

 it seems a bit wasteful to go through a layer of scsi emulation.

Indeed treating the virtio disk similarly to installation from a USB
stick is better, but SCSI emulation is actually a very good way to not
reinvent the wheel. CD-ROM/DVD-ROM media need a lot of magic (such as
subdivision of the medium into tracks, different media formats, etc.)
and emulating those in virtio-blk would be even more wasteful.

 Shouldn't qemu at least warn you that the media=argument does nothing
 on virtio devices instead of silently ignoring it?

Yes, that's a legitimate request.

  Or better yet, shouldn't it automatically use virtio-scsi instead?

No, virtio-scsi is relatively new and not all distros have picked it up
yet.

[Bug 1155403] Re: virtio cdrom detected as hard disk

2013-03-18 Thread Paolo Bonzini
if=virtio means virtio-blk, not virtio-something.

Also, Linux is perfectly fine with ISO images on virtio, the Ubuntu
installer is wrong in not scanning virtio disks. Since Ubuntu wouldn't
work either way, they should first fix the installer and then we can re-
evaluate if QEMU can do something (probably not, except warning for
media=cdrom).

[Bug 1155403] Re: virtio cdrom detected as hard disk

2013-03-18 Thread Paolo Bonzini
 The media argument seems a perfectly natural
 way to select between the two.

Then how do you distinguish between a virtio-scsi and a virtio-blk hard
disk? These may even require changes to the guest, since one becomes
/dev/vda and the other becomes /dev/sda.

virtio-scsi will grow more and more functionality, while virtio-blk will
likely remain a secondary choice for performance or backwards-
compatibility.

There's no such thing as a virtio-blk CD-ROM, only hard-disks. For
installation it shouldn't matter, since .iso images usually can work
also as hard-disk images (for putting them on a USB stick).

If you want to test installation from a real virtio CD-ROM, use
virtio-scsi:

-drive file=/path/to/file.iso,if=none,id=cd -device virtio-scsi-pci
-device scsi-cd,drive=cd

or

-drive file=/path/to/file.iso,if=none,media=cdrom,id=cd -device virtio-
scsi-pci -device scsi-disk,drive=cd

[Bug 509180] Re: ecryptfs sometimes seems to add trailing garbage to encrypted files

2011-11-24 Thread Paolo Bonzini
The EINTR is not passed up, and leaves bad data in the cache as if
ecryptfs thought the files were not encrypted. This is what causes the
short writes. Getting an strace is quite difficult, but this time I
succeeded:

files and may transfer it to others, until all of them are in the cache
and the grep succeeds.

[Bug 521523] Re: severe ecryptfs corruption

2011-02-02 Thread Paolo Bonzini
Any git repository I use heavily (mostly kernel, Xen and qemu in my
case, but it is not relevant I think) will corrupt at least once a day,
as proved from the fact that I just reproduced it. :) Probably
interactive rebases and switching branches help.

However, I don't know how to make the error occur. I created the
repositories in a non-ecryptfs dir and then rsynced a lot of files to
ecryptfs -- however I don't believe this is related to the bug.

The kernel is 2.6.35.10.

My suspicion about 4kb multiples is correct:

-rw-rw-r-- 1 pbonzini users 20480 Sep 22 17:04 ui/sdl_keysym.h
-rw-rw-r-- 1 pbonzini users 12288 Sep 22 17:04 ui/sdl_zoom.c

-rw-rw-r-- 1 pbonzini users 16384 Oct 14 12:59 ui/spice-input.c

and even better, umount + mount fixes it---so somehow the stat cache in
ecryptfs is getting corrupted.

[Bug 490005] Re: ecryptfs_readpage: Error decrypting page

2010-12-07 Thread Paolo Bonzini
I am seeing these messages whenever I have two processes reading the
same file. Note that write access is not necessary.

The simplest way to reproduce it is

git grep abczzz git grep abczzz

but this is probably because git uses multiple threads, rather than
because the bug is related to git. In fact, I reproduced it in places
where I have not even moved the HEAD of this repository since I copied
it from an unencrypted directory to an ecryptfs one.

Another way to reproduce it for me (but much less consistently) is:

(find . -type f | xargs md5sum  /dev/null)  find . -type f | xargs
md5sum  /dev/null

which gives occasional Input/Output errors. In some cases (and
especially with git grep) instead the program sees an empty file
(confirmed with strace) which shows as

error: 'Documentation/HOWTO': short read Success
error: 'Documentation/arm/tcm.txt': short read Success
error: 'Documentation/braille-console.txt': short read Success

At the same time, the dreaded messages appear in /var/log/messages

2010-04-01 Thread Paolo Bonzini
This patch has already been nacked because caps lock works in every
other distro.

The faulty patch indeed is only present until Karmic
(205_lock_keys.diff, not 005). I guess that then the best workaround is
to patch the karmic qemu-kvm as in comment #13.

[Bug 427612] Re: does not pass pressed caps lock to client

2010-02-12 Thread Paolo Bonzini
The sdl patch was correctly submitted as

+SDL_UseLockKeys = getenv (SDL_DISABLE_LOCK_KEYS) == NULL;

...

+use_lock_keys = SDL_UseLockKeys;

...

+if (!use_lock_keys)
+break;

(i.e. by default do not change anything) but the maintainer apparently
morphed it into

+SDL_UseLockKeys = getenv(SDL_DISABLE_LOCK_KEYS);

...

+ use_lock_keys = ( SDL_UseLockKeys  *SDL_UseLockKeys );

...

+ if ( ! use_lock_keys )
+ break;

which changed the meaning of SDL_DISABLE_LOCK_KEYS and, at the same
time, the default. A better patch to qemu would be to stick

putenv (SDL_DISABLE_LOCK_KEYS, howlame);

before SDL_Init. Also totally inacceptable by upstream, but at least it
doesn't break Debian/Ubuntu qemu if the wrong 205_lock_keys.patch is
removed from libsdl.

[Bug 452620] Re: sed crashes after special character in command

2010-02-12 Thread Paolo Bonzini
The error message is ugly, but the bug is that the script is not valid
UTF-8, it is encoded as ISO-8859-1. When you create the line in a new
script, vi saves it as UTF-8 for you.

Run sed with LANG=en_US.ISO-8859-1 or with LANG=C instead.

[Bug 447866] Re: sed stops replacing when reaching a special character

2009-11-11 Thread Paolo Bonzini
If you don't know the charset of the file, you should set the LANG or
LC_CTYPE variables to C:

$ echo $'\x88' | sed -e 's/[^0123456789]//g' | od -x
000 0a88
002
$ echo $'\x88' | LANG=C sed -e 's/[^0123456789]//g' | od -x
000 000a
001

This is different from Perl indeed:

$ echo $'\x88' | psed 's/[^0123456789]//g' | od -x
000 000a
001

[Bug 150920] kernel overwrites MAP_PRIVATE mmap

2007-10-09 Thread Paolo Bonzini
Public bug reported:

This is a kernel bug. I could reproduce it with 2.6.20 and 2.6.22
(tested with i386 and x86-64).

1) Download http://www.inf.unisi.ch/phd/bonzini/smalltalk-2.95d.tar.gz
2) Compile it with ./configure make CFLAGS=-g (the cflags is only for
easier debuggability).
3) Run ./gst
4) Type ObjectMemory snapshot

It crashes.  To reproduce again:

5) Run rm gst.im; make gst.im
6) Go to step 4.

The code that crashes is in save.c; it dereferences a NULL pointer:

Program received signal SIGBUS, Bus error.
0x08083bf3 in make_oop_table_to_be_saved (header=0xbff29934) at save.c:345
345   int numPointers = NUM_OOPS (oop-object);
(gdb) p oop-object-objClass
$1 = (OOP) 0x0

However, going on in the debugging session, you can see that the memory
is zeroed *by the kernel*:

(gdb) p oop-object-objClass
$2 = (OOP *) 0xb7cb8784

We set up a breakpoint a little earlier:

(gdb) b 279
Breakpoint 1 at 0x8083a5d: file save.c, line 279.
(gdb) shell rm gst.im; make gst.im
(gdb) run
Starting program: /home/bonzinip/smalltalk-2.95d/gst
GNU Smalltalk ready
st ObjectMemory snapshot
Global garbage collection... done

Breakpoint 1, _gst_save_to_file (
fileName=0x812a118 /home/bonzinip/smalltalk-2.95d/gst.im) at save.c:279
279   ftruncate (imageFd, 0);

Now we set a watchpoint on the location that triggered the NULL access:

(gdb) set can-use-hw-watchpoints 0
(gdb) watch *$2
Watchpoint 2: *$2
(gdb) n
Watchpoint 2: *$2

Old value = (OOP) 0x126
New value = (OOP) 0x0
0xb7ee9438 in ftruncate64 () from /lib/libc.so.6

From a disassembly, you can see that it was zeroed by the kernel:

(gdb) disass 0xb7ee9431 0xb7ee94ec
0xb7ee9431 ftruncate64+49:mov$0xc2,%eax
0xb7ee9436 ftruncate64+54:int$0x80 ---
0xb7ee9438 ftruncate64+56:xchg   %edi,%ebx
0xb7ee943a ftruncate64+58:mov%eax,%esi

I believe the reason is a bad interaction between the private mmap
established in save.c:

  buf = mmap (NULL, file_size, PROT_READ, MAP_PRIVATE, imageFd, 0);

and truncating the inode on which the mmap was done. Indeed, if the
gst.im file is unlinked before opening it, the bug disappears. You can
try this from the Smalltalk interpreter, without patching the source
code:

$ ./gst
GNU Smalltalk ready

st (File name: 'gst.im') remove
a RealFileHandler
st ObjectMemory snapshot
Global garbage collection... done
ObjectMemory
st

(no bus error anymore).

I hope this long explanation is understandable!
