[Bug 377483] Re: DVD PATA-SATA bridge (SPiF223A) doesn't work...

2013-01-03 Thread Pascal Deloof
Fresh install of Ubuntu 12.04 today to test things out. Perfect.
Hercules wireless usb (RTL8191S-RTL8192SU) works out of the box. 2nd hd
(SATA disk on SPIF223A bridge to ATA) can be approached (read
write)... Laptop is under pressure with 12.04 running. Acer aspire 1600
series with Pentium 4 3.06 GHz hyperthreading cpu, 1 GB sdram. Most of
the time the cpu is working over 90% of its capacity, producing a lot of
heat. Still wondering why this 2nd hd can't be approached with 10.04
running except for this one time after uninstalling ndiswrapper. Anyone
who can check this out?

[Bug 377483] Re: DVD PATA-SATA bridge (SPiF223A) doesn't work...

2012-12-31 Thread Pascal Deloof
Today I installed the driver for RTL8191S (RTL8192SU) without the ndiswrapper
module, following these instructions:
http://www.mail-archive.com/ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com/msg2620217.html
http://www.mail-archive.com/ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com/msg2621027.html
Wireless connection works but guess what: laptop freezes again within seconds
when I read content from the second hd.
I removed again the module r8192s_usb but this doesn't change the situation.
Laptop keeps freezing when 2nd hd is approached to read or write. Hard reset is
needed.
So the only time I managed to read and use data of the 2nd hd was after
removing the ndiswrapper module. What am I missing here? Every test I do with
the hd itself is ok, so is a usb connection of this drive or the use of it in
windows XP SP3. Still thinking of a compatibility problem with this PATA-SATA
bridge SPIF223A.

[Bug 377483] Re: DVD PATA-SATA bridge (SPiF223A) doesn't work...

2012-12-30 Thread Pascal Deloof
following a solution proposed on ubuntu forums (
http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=1680532 ) I removed the ndiswrapper.
Seems like all is working now, except for my wireless internet connection of
course. Reading/writing from/to the 2nd hard drive (over the SPIF223A bridge)
is no longer a problem. But I'm stuck with the network cable for now. I used
the ndiswrapper for my usb wireless network/internet connection.
Still I have to make the choice now: using the 2nd hdd or my wireless
usb-dongle. (Hercules HWNUm-300 Wireless N mini [Realtek RTL8191S])
Hope this information can help someone else.

[Bug 377483] Re: DVD PATA-SATA bridge (SPiF223A) doesn't work...

2012-12-27 Thread Pascal Deloof
Trying to connect a 2nd hdd with this PATA-SATA bridge (SPiF223A). Hdd can be
mounted and unmounted. All tests/bench on this hdd work. System recognizes disk
and smart says it's ok. But when trying to read /write data from/to it system
freezes completely within 10 seconds. No problem with same configuration under
windows XP.
Reopened this isue because looks the same problem; Ubuntu 10.04 Kernel
2.6.32-45-generic.

[Bug 377483] Re: DVD PATA-SATA bridge (SPiF223A) doesn't work...

2012-12-27 Thread Pascal Deloof
update on previous comment: now trying to mount this disk (still using
the SPiF223A bridge) freezes the system. Needs a hard reset! (Tried W-XP
again and all works fine.) Disk utilities still shows the hdd as
/dev/sdb1 with name, serial nr, capacity... but trying to mount this
disk freezes the system. The same disk (Seagate SATA) works fine over a
usb-bridge as external disk. The problem has to be the use of the PATA-
SATA bridge SPiF223A (SUNPLUS IT, SATALINK, SPIF223A-HL022). This bridge
is built in a 2nd HDD-caddy which comes in place of the DVD-drive.
