Installed linux-image-2.6.28-14-generic 2.6.28-14.46 from jaunty- proposed. Ran hang.py, and still obtained a soft lockup. Doesn't seem like the update fixes this problem. Re: [Bug 330545] Re: xserver-video-ati defaults MigrationHeuristic to always. Smart and greedy would give vissible improvement to performance.
On Wed, May 13, 2009 at 11:25 AM, Bryce Harrington br...@bryceharrington.org wrote: We messed around a bunch with different migration heuristic options with the intel driver. Certainly there were some measurable improvements when using greedy, however it was found to cause graphics corruption on some systems (indeed, corruption issues are to be expected by design with greedy). As I understand it, all these performance issues are part and parcel of iniquities in DRI1/EXA design, and so in theory DRI2 should solve them. I'm not sure when we can expect DRI2 for -ati, but it's already available for -intel so I expect it should be arriving soon, hopefully in the Karmic time frame. Hopefully this explains why I don't think we need to pursue greedy for ati. Radeon drm module didn't make it to 2.6.30 kernel which means that Karmic won't have dri2 for radeon cards unless there is plan to use 2.6.31 or backport the changes from Fedora. Maybe it would be good idea to have gui option to select migration heuristic because it gives clear boost for system where bandwidth to graphics card is very limiting factor (like older radeon cards) I haven't at least seen or heard about corruption with radeons if changing heuristics. Most often cause is accelerated download from screen extension. Anyway. [Bug 355086] Re: Wesnoth save game file format in jaunty is incompatible (1.4 - 1.6) and saves just vanish
Also, I'm looking for Wesnoth, when I start it with old saved games, to say You have old saved games. Sorry you can't play them. You need to downgrade to 1.4 or another helpful message, rather than just pretend that they aren't there. I would hope that's not too big a patch. I agree that's a bug for upstream rather than the Debian or Ubuntu maintainer, though. That's because historically it was stored in ~/.wesnoth and is now stored in ~/.wesnoth1.6. I am not exactly sure what the need for the switch was but I expect that upstream does have a reason for this approach - I rather not like to patch the configdir path to be different without knowing the rationale behind that and divert from how its done everywhere else. This was just to solved the problem that average user would have old userdata/saves after upgrade which would then cause many problems in the new stable release. So directory name change was made to prevent users from shooting their own leg because they aren't excepted to know all the details about userdata directory. @rhonda: How about making wesnoth packages install wesnothX.Y directory so users could have multiple stable versions installed same time. This would help transition period when the new stable version hits distros. Then you would need wesnoth meta packages that depend on the latest wesnoth packages with version in the package names. I think that wouls just require a few path changes and extra packages build. [Bug 363510] [NEW] Errors in single-precision BLAS (libatlas3gf-sse)
Public bug reported: At least the single-precision complex arithmetic in libatlas3gf-sse 3.6.0-22ubuntu2 yields completely invalid results. A test program demonstrating the errors is attached. [Bug 332945] Re: [Jaunty] Removal of Update Notifier is WRONG
From security point of view this idea sounds horrible. There is claim that this is made to improve security but only way to do it is make automatic security update install default in new installations. Here is one good idea that is implemented very badly. So my idea of implementing removal of icons from notification areal is that it has to be easily configurable to user. I want to have easy access to background applications and open window is much worse than icon. Notification icno is many times smaller than window selector entry. For me it would be better if I could configure even more applications to use notification icons to help me to interact with them. And my guess is that I'm not alone who hopes that there is way to have easily clickable icon for many background running programs that I use infrequently. It is good idea to try new UI design but you should also do UI testing and compare new and old interface. Preferable as near as possible of real world usage pattern. That way at least the worst usability bugs would be fixed in new implementation before making . people hate it. PS. If you make radical changes toUI you will always get bad initial reaction. But if new design was really improvement (and no major bugs) nearly everyone will accept it shortly. -- [Jaunty] Removal of Update Notifier is WRONG https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/332945 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 330824] Re: Soft lockups (freezes) when deleting files from ext4 partitions on 2.6.28
Confirm that similar regular freezing occurs only on my machine, with ext4 FS converted from ext3. Typically the freeze occurs under high disk activity; I believe when the freeze has happened, I have had a rsync job traversing whole /home, which contains a large number of small files. I managed to get a SysRq+L stack trace, when the freeze occurred. (Photo attached; the machine was unresponsive, so can't attach it as text.) The trace is quite similar to that reported in https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux/+bug/340628 It might be of note that the system did not initially respond to SysRq commands at first, but responded only after a few minutes. These freezes occur very frequently, typically within a few hours of uptime. This bug severely affects viability of using ext4 partitions (if the problem really has to do with ext4). Probably unrelated information: freezes occur both with the non-free Nvidia driver and the free Xorg nv driver. ** Attachment added: Photo of a stack trace from SysRq+L http://launchpadlibrarian.net/24078926/2009-03-19_00-25-25_1%20-%20initial%20sysrq%2Bl.png -- Soft lockups (freezes) when deleting files from ext4 partitions on 2.6.28 https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/330824 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 330545] [NEW] xserver-video-ati defaults MigrationHeuristic to always. Smart and greedy would give vissible improvement to performance.
Public bug reported: Binary package hint: xserver-xorg-video-ati There is performance problems when enabling EXA (compared to XAA): - firefox resize, redraw etc (anything that happens to make ff redraw a lot) - Some windows applications that are using gdi to draw some custom UI. I made some oprofile testing to locate problems with exa accerlation. I found that in some applications about 70% of cpu time was used in memcpy that was called from exaDoMigration-exaDoMoveOutPixmap-exaCopyDirty. I played a bit with migration settings in xorg.conf and I found that smart gives the best response times to user input but smart has higher cpu usage. Fix for performance problem is setting default MigrationHeuristic to smart for ati/radeon driver. I don't know any possible problems that could caused if default is changed to smart. I'm currently testing it in my system and nothing that I have found so far in 2 hours testing. Of course choosing Heuristics requires more testing but I think this change is worth testing and adding to Jaunty (if rumors are true that EXA will be enabled by default then). system: Ubuntu 8.10 all updates installed (including kernel updates). acer acpire 1359 laptop: Athlon XP-M Mobility Radeon 9200 (agp; rv280) I have manually enabled exa, AccelDFS, DynamicClocks and composite in xorg.conf. ** Affects: xserver-xorg-video-ati (Ubuntu) Importance: Undecided Status: New -- xserver-video-ati defaults MigrationHeuristic to always. [Bug 109434] Re: Installing a server for a game automatically auto-inits and runs every boot.
I think wesnoth-server shouldn't start wesnothd server automatically at statup. Why so? Wesnoth client will require wesnothd to be present for some functionality in 1.6 and is already requiring wesnothd in 1.5 development versions. This is only for minor lan game feature. Solution that I would think of is that wesnothd binary can be installed using package wesnoth-server which doesn't make it auto start. If someone wants to host MP server that starts always that would be provided by wesnoth-mp-server package. mp-server package would depend on wesnoth-server and only install configurations to run wesnothd at start up. -- Installing a server for a game automatically auto-inits and runs every boot. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/109434 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
[Bug 241845] Re: Wesnoth is unable to have a normal quit. Only kill -9 then can terminate the process.
Seems like SDL sound/mixer internal thread isn't existing even thought it should. So this is probably SDL bug instead of wesnoth one. One thing that did not work in Xournal 0.4.1-0ubuntu1 but works in 0.4.2.1 is inserting text. [Bug 174427] Re: Tremulous causes X server crash (signal 11) on Radeon 9250 (M9+) 5C61 (AGP)
I have similar problem when trying to run wesnoth in 16bpp screen mode. It crashes xserver randomly when drawing to screen. 24bpp mode works without problems. Wesnoth uses SDL for all operations and native bpp is 32 so SDL needs to do bpp conversion when running in 16 bpp mode. I could trace crash to ioctl call to ioctl(7, 0x6444, 0) returning 0. FD 7 is /dev/dri/card0 opened in lr-x-- mode. There is FD 8 wit write access too to same device. One think to note is that when I run wesnoth under gdb and use advance when trying to locate crash it never crashes. But crash rate without gdb is over 75 %. Steps to reproduce: 1. set bpp in Xorg.conf to 16 2. startX 3. start the svn version of wesnoth If not yet crashing 4. [Bug 244205] [NEW] Oxygen cursor theme showing up when other is selected
Public bug reported: Whenever I install KDE4 to try it, the Oxygen cursor theme gets installed (which, I’m sorry, but I really really really don’t like and makes me nauseous and upset). It appears however, that no matter that I select another theme, Oxygen will try to appear as often as possible to make my life miserable. I do NOT want to see it in my KDE3 apps when I have CLEARLY selected the Ubuntu DMZ theme or the Bluecurve theme I installed. I do NOT want to see it in my KDE4 apps, because I have also clearly selected otherwise. And I do not want to see it in my Gtk apps for the exact same reason. Why is it so... ubiquitous? Even so far that my settings are not honoured? Yes, uninstalling it fixes my problem, but that also makes the metapackage for the KDE4 desktop uninstalled, which I want to avoid. It’s fine if it just sits in my hard drive, but I do not want to ever see it again on my screen. This has been so since the theme has first appeared, but only now did I bother reporting it. ** Affects: oxygencursors (Ubuntu) Importance: Undecided Status: New -- Oxygen cursor theme showing up when other is selected https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/244205 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
[Bug 244205] Re: Oxygen cursor theme showing up when other is selected
As is my luck, by the time I open my mouth about it, it starts to behave like it should. So many times I had to remove the cursor set just so it wouldn’t pop up randomly… It seems it finally does work, needs a few restarts and it’s clear. Aside: is it me or, are the NESW and NWSE cursors mixed up in KDE4 (if I choose the DMZ theme or the {red|white}glass ones, the corner resize arrows will be tangential rather than going through the corner, Oxygen and the thing called “default KDE theme” look right). -- Oxygen cursor theme showing up when other is selected https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/244205 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
[Bug 238897] [NEW] mcedit default indentation settings cause mixture of tabs and spaces
Public bug reported: Binary package hint: mc By default, mcedit’s indentation settings are: 8 units per tab, use tabs, and use fake half tabs. This causes problems because fake half tabs are in fact tabsize/2 space characters, and as anyone who has ever indented source code knows: either use tabs, or spaces, but make up your mind, else havoc is guaranteed. I find it especially unwise to propagate such a counterproductive setting as default. I think Fake Half Tabs would be much better turned off -- whether people use tabs or spaces, and how many of them is a wholly different issue altogether. ** Affects: mc (Ubuntu) Importance: Undecided Status: New -- mcedit default indentation settings cause mixture of tabs and spaces https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/238897 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
