[Bug 427572] [NEW] ssh X forwarding fails because user doesn't have access to write to /var/run/gdm/

2009-09-10 Thread Pauli
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: xauth

When I try to connect to ssh server running in Ubuntu Karmic with X
forwarding enabled I get problem that xauth doesn't have access to write
to /var/run/gdm/.

There is no problem if I'm already logged in locally with same user
because authentication file already exits.

[Bug 426114] [NEW] nouveau kernel module causes null pointer reference in X start

2009-09-08 Thread Pauli
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: nouveau-kernel-source

Nouveau kernel module crashes when Xorg is starting in bo allocation.
This makes whole system unusable because going back to terminal after

[Bug 423167] Re: Ethernet icon looks wrong

2009-09-05 Thread Pauli Virtanen
It was very difficult for me to associate this icon with anything
network-related. Recognizing the RJ45 socket from this icon is quite
difficult as it's drawn in a heads-on 2D view, with a rather bad color
choice. IMHO, it's quite ugly and uninformative.

(Rather than a RJ45 socket, it looks more like something out of Super
Mario Bros...)

[Bug 348450] Re: [X1650] freeze on opengl games (bzflag, alienarena)

2009-08-18 Thread Pauli
To fix most of freezes it is enough to use xorg-edgers packages. But
there is still sometimes small chance for GPU hang. Now I did compile
vanila kernel for jaunty to get KMS where remaining hang problems have
disappeared.

So non-kms Karmic: Small chance for hang. Reproducing in xmoto level
Green hill zone act 3. There is a small pit after spring where it
hangs most of times.

kms-karmic: None so far found but testing has been too little to rule
out completely.

[Bug 410813] [NEW] Cannot draw in xournal 0.4.2.1-1ubuntu1

2009-08-08 Thread Pauli Virtanen
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: xournal

In Xournal 0.4.2.1-1ubuntu1 in Karmic Koala (as of Aug 8 2009): none of
the drawing tools works, making the whole application unusable.

To reproduce:

1. Start Xournal

2. Try to draw with the pen tool, or input text with the text tool.

3. Note that neither produces any output: pen does not draw anything,
and no text can be entered.

Expected result: Pen should draw a line, and one should be able to enter
text.

[Bug 330824] Re: Soft lockups (freezes) when deleting files from ext4 partitions on 2.6.28

2009-07-13 Thread Pauli Virtanen
Installed linux-image-2.6.28-14-generic 2.6.28-14.46 from jaunty-
proposed. Ran hang.py, and still obtained a soft lockup. Doesn't seem
like the update fixes this problem. So I guess Theodore Tso was right in
pointing out above that this might not be the correct fix. (Note that
for me 2.6.29-02062902 does not have this lockup problem.)

Also, on one machine, obtaining a crash reliably requires running
several hang.py in parallel and modifying the script so that each
instance uses its own set of file names.

@martinm1000: Check that `uname -a` reports kernel version 2.6.28-14.

As I understand it, all these performance issues are part and parcel of
iniquities in DRI1/EXA design, and so in theory DRI2 should solve them.
I'm not sure when we can expect DRI2 for -ati, but it's already
available for -intel so I expect it should be arriving soon, hopefully
 in the Karmic time frame.

Hopefully this explains why I don't think we need to pursue greedy for
 ati.

Radeon drm module didn't make it to 2.6.30 kernel which means that
Karmic won't have dri2 for radeon cards unless there is plan to use
2.6.31 or backport the changes from Fedora.

Maybe it would be good idea to have gui option to select migration
heuristic because it gives clear boost for system where bandwidth to
graphics card is very limiting factor (like older radeon cards)

I haven't at least seen or heard about corruption with radeons if
changing heuristics. Most often cause is accelerated download from
screen extension.

Anyway. I think smart is the better option than greedy if wanting
to get the least lag for the UI.

xf86-video-ati master commit da58e351b6398fa18b1d9c1a57a6e49b285f610f

I think that mesa, drm and xf86-video-ati should be enough if building
for dri1 only but I have tried to build raden-rewrite + dri2 which
needs more updated packages. I couldn't yet find the commit that fixed
everything but I suspect that new drm is required too to make it all
work stable with r300 cards.

In kernel drm modules from drm git is must to have to make the latest
ddx/mesa stable. I think xorg-edgers PPA is providing new enough
package already.

Pauli

PS. This settup doesn't provide redirected rendering which is required
for opengl apps to work corretly under composite window manager. RDR
is only available when using radeon-rewrite with kernel mode setting.
I couldn't make KMS work correctly in ubuntu jaunty based system so I
don't know how to test that in ubuntu. Probably easiest way to test
new driver is to use fedora rawhide livecd.

[Bug 355086] Re: Wesnoth save game file format in jaunty is incompatible (1.4 - 1.6) and saves just vanish

2009-05-04 Thread Pauli
Also, I'm looking for Wesnoth, when I start it with old saved games, to
say You have old saved games. Sorry you can't play them. You need to
downgrade to 1.4 or another helpful message, rather than just pretend
that they aren't there. I would hope that's not too big a patch. I agree
that's a bug for upstream rather than the Debian or Ubuntu maintainer,
 though.

That's because historically it was stored in ~/.wesnoth and is now
stored in ~/.wesnoth1.6. I am not exactly sure what the need for the
switch was but I expect that upstream does have a reason for this
approach - I rather not like to patch the configdir path to be different
without knowing the rationale behind that and divert from how its done
everywhere else.

This was just to solved the problem that average user would have old
userdata/saves after upgrade which would then cause many problems in the
new stable release. So directory name change was made to prevent users
from shooting their own leg because they aren't excepted to know all the
details about userdata directory.

@rhonda: How about making wesnoth packages install wesnothX.Y directory
so users could have multiple stable versions installed same time. This
would help transition period when the new stable version hits distros.
Then you would need wesnoth meta packages that depend on the latest
wesnoth packages with version in the package names.

I think that wouls just require a few path changes and extra packages
build. But of course larger question is if debian or ubuntu would accept
that kind of change.

[Bug 330824] Re: Soft lockups (freezes) when deleting files from ext4 partitions on 2.6.28

2009-05-03 Thread Pauli Virtanen
@Tim Gardner on 2009-04-30:
@Derek - that patch is already in Jaunty.

 static void ext4_mb_add_n_trim(struct ext4_allocation_context *ac)
 ...
 list_for_each_entry_rcu(tmp_pa, lg-lg_prealloc_list[order],
 pa_inode_list) {
 spin_lock(tmp_pa-pa_lock);
 if (tmp_pa-pa_deleted) {

I don't think it is: currently in git://kernel.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/ubuntu-
jaunty.git (or is the current Jaunty kernel tree somewhere else?),
fs/ext4/mballoc.c reads

http://kernel.ubuntu.com/git?p=ubuntu/ubuntu-jaunty.git;a=blob;f=fs/ext4/mballoc.c;h=add854a140a1c3b0207db0e92d3cca5bb882;hb=HEAD#l4418
...
spin_lock(tmp_pa-pa_lock);
if (tmp_pa-pa_deleted) {
spin_unlock(pa-pa_lock);
continue;
}
...

while in mainline also the latter pa- is tmp_pa-. Same for the linux-
image-2.6.28-11-generic 2.6.28-11.42 tarball.

Has anyone tried to reproduce the bug with this change applied?

My laptop shows only black screen on resume and doesn't response to

This is regression from intrepid as I could suspend/resume if I mannualy
removed my ethernet card driver and modprobed it after resume. If I

it. (wireless would continue to work without problems which I'm usually

[Bug 363510] [NEW] Errors in single-precision BLAS (libatlas3gf-sse)

2009-04-18 Thread Pauli Virtanen
Public bug reported:

At least the single-precision complex arithmetic in libatlas3gf-sse
3.6.0-22ubuntu2 yields completely invalid results. A test program
demonstrating the errors is attached.

This issue appears to be specific to the SSE version of Atlas.

Would it be possible to add some sanity checks to Ubuntu/Debian's Atlas
build, so that this type of problems would be detected and hosed
packages wouldn't make it into distribution? Atlas is an important
component in many scientific applications, and bugs in the shipped
version will affect many programs down the stream.

You can download them from in-game button in top left corner of main
menu. That will take sometime as default is to download all 1500+
levels.

I don't have access to the laptop with r500 card. I will be testing a
bit more after weekend when I have again access to the laptop.

PS. There is possible fix posted to phoronix forums:

Freeze may not have started after the upgrade that I thought it was

It started inmidiatly after that upgrade but same time I downloaded all
additional levels for xmoto. After testing a bit more it seems like
default level set for xmoto doesn't cause the freeze. (btw, r280 based
card doesn't have this problem so bug is r300 specific problem)

2009-03-28 Thread Pauli
I noticed same freeze in xmoto after upgrading everything earlier today.
System is stuck in drm call from r300 dri driver. This drm call then
blocks whole xserver.

Here is backtrace from blocked xserver:

yes. btw, I thought that installing libgl1-mesa-dri-dbg would give debug
symbols r300 dri driver.

Nothing is printed to dmesg. (thanks to watch not reacting fast enough)
Does anyone know easy way to set kernel watchdog to something like 5
seconds? /sys maybe?

So this seems like bug in kernele side that causes for ever loop or some
hard lock in mutex. No more idea about it yet as Machine is not main and
I only have ssh access currently.

[Bug 332945] Re: [Jaunty] Removal of Update Notifier is WRONG

2009-03-27 Thread Pauli
From security point of view this idea sounds horrible. There is claim
that this is made to improve security but only way to do it is make
automatic security update install default in new installations.

Here is one good idea that is implemented very badly. So my idea of
implementing removal of icons from notification areal is that it has to
be easily configurable to user.

I want to have easy access to background applications and open window is
much worse than icon. Notification icno is many times smaller than
window selector entry. For me it would be better if I could configure
even more applications to use notification icons to help me to interact
with them. And my guess is that I'm not alone who hopes that there is
way to have easily clickable icon for many background running programs
that I use infrequently.

It is good idea to try new UI design but you should also do UI testing
and compare new and old interface. Preferable as near as possible of
real world usage pattern. That way at least the worst usability bugs
would be fixed in new implementation before making . people hate it.

PS. If you make radical changes toUI you will always get bad initial
reaction. But if new design was really improvement (and no major bugs)
nearly everyone will accept it shortly.

[Bug 330824] Re: Soft lockups (freezes) when deleting files from ext4 partitions on 2.6.28

2009-03-18 Thread Pauli Virtanen
Confirm that similar regular freezing occurs only on my machine, with
ext4 FS converted from ext3. Typically the freeze occurs under high disk
activity; I believe when the freeze has happened, I have had a rsync job
traversing whole /home, which contains a large number of small files.

I managed to get a SysRq+L stack trace, when the freeze occurred. (Photo
attached; the machine was unresponsive, so can't attach it as text.) The trace
is quite similar to that reported in
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux/+bug/340628
It might be of note that the system did not initially respond to SysRq commands
at first, but responded only after a few minutes.

These freezes occur very frequently, typically within a few hours of
uptime. This bug severely affects viability of using ext4 partitions (if
the problem really has to do with ext4).

Probably unrelated information: freezes occur both with the non-free
Nvidia driver and the free Xorg nv driver.

[Bug 327362] Re: avahi-daemon disabled because there is a unicast .local domain

2009-02-26 Thread Pauli
As side note:
I just upgraded to hydrid jaunty/intrepid from intrepid. I did upgrade kernel,
xserver and mesa which included some libs. After upgrade avahi isn't
discoverable in my lan.

Also my ISP doesn't have local in dns server so problem seems like
related to some lib that avahi is using or then kernel upgrade caused
this problem.

I will try to see if I can find the real cause for problem.

[Bug 327362] Re: avahi-daemon disabled because there is a unicast .local domain

2009-02-26 Thread Pauli
Editing /etc/default/avahi-daemon fixed it for me.

AVAHI_DAEMON_DETECT_LOCAL=0 makes it discover all 8.10 machines in my
lan (and others machines are now able to see the upgraded one).

Possible cause for problem might be D-link nat router which has built in
dns proxy. I don't realy know but that is my best guess.

[Bug 295569] Re: wesnoth crashed with SIGSEGV in malloc()

2009-02-17 Thread Pauli
Seems like this is related to bugs in network_worker.cpp.

Did it ever crash when you first time connected to any server? (if yes
then this is _not_ networking thread freeing bug)

So it is very likely that bug was fixed when wesnoth was upgraded from
1.4.4 to 1.4.5.

[Bug 330545] [NEW] xserver-video-ati defaults MigrationHeuristic to always. Smart and greedy would give vissible improvement to performance.

2009-02-17 Thread Pauli
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: xserver-xorg-video-ati

There is performance problems when enabling EXA (compared to XAA):
- firefox resize, redraw etc (anything that happens to make ff redraw a lot)
- Some windows applications that are using gdi to draw some custom UI.

I made some oprofile testing to locate problems with exa accerlation. I
found that in some applications about 70% of cpu time was used in memcpy
that was called from exaDoMigration-exaDoMoveOutPixmap-exaCopyDirty. I
played a bit with migration settings in xorg.conf and I found that smart
gives the best response times to user input but smart has higher cpu
usage.

Fix for performance problem is setting default MigrationHeuristic to
smart for ati/radeon driver. I don't know any possible problems that
could caused if default is changed to smart. I'm currently testing it in
my system and nothing that I have found so far in 2 hours testing. Of
course choosing Heuristics requires more testing but I think this change
is worth testing and adding to Jaunty (if rumors are true that EXA will
be enabled by default then).

system:
Ubuntu 8.10 all updates installed (including kernel updates).
acer acpire 1359 laptop:
Athlon XP-M
Mobility Radeon 9200 (agp; rv280)

I have manually enabled exa, AccelDFS, DynamicClocks and composite in
xorg.conf.

[Bug 287158] Re: wesnoth crashed with SIGSEGV in malloc()

2009-01-28 Thread Pauli
Fix for this crash is just a few lines change:
http://svn.gna.org/viewcvs/wesnoth?rev=29514dir_pagestart=100view=rev

I don't know much what has changed in 1.4.x. But I think for wesnoth it
would be reasonable to always upgrade to the latest stable version. Code
wise it there is only bug fixes but all new graphics are ported to
stable branch which adds huge amount changes to the stable branch.

[Bug 287158] Re: wesnoth crashed with SIGSEGV in malloc()

2009-01-27 Thread Pauli
I checked 1.4.7 with valgrind (calgrind was just a typo in previous
post) and there is no trace of race condition in disconnect any more.

Solution to this might be either to push 1.4.7 to intrepid or backport
network_worker.cpp. I don't know which one is preferred but both should
fix the crash problem (that has about 25 % chance to happen in my system
while disconnecting)

[Bug 241845] Re: Wesnoth is unable to have a normal quit. Only kill -9 then can terminate the process.

2008-12-09 Thread Pauli
I think I was accidentaly able reproduce this bug:

1. Enable pulseaudio server
2. have libsdl1.2debian-alsa installed (or any other non-pulse compabitile
sound system)
3. run wesnoth and freeing sound device blocks in same mutex call as reported
here

work around for me:
Use correct sdl sound driver for system.

I think this might somehow related that sdl can't initialize/use sound
system same time with another program and makes something to block
inside libsdl which causes application blocking when freeing sound
system.

I don't know if above sdl-mixer patch would fix this.

[Bug 291500] [NEW] [Ibex][Regression] pata via driver has read/seek errors when mounting a CD and doing dd copy of the CD

2008-10-31 Thread Pauli
Public bug reported:

Mounting and reading works well with old 2.6.24 kernel from hardy.

After 1-2 minutes of errors cd is mounted correctly and I can mostly use it
except copying.
Mount problem is stoping boot until mounting is successful which makes booting
computer very painful if I forgot to remove CD.

Problem is always happening around sector 1190600. Errors are usually
pointing to 1190600 but there is report about others sector with number
less than 100k away.

When I try to do dd copy of cd to iso it fails also around same sector
(That means about 600M of data copied from CD)?

CD that has problems is copy-protected securerom CD. (Football manager
2008) I can use CD to play the game after CD has been mounted.

dmesg includes errors while I try to boot with CD in the driver.

[Bug 261941] [NEW] dead keys don't work

2008-08-27 Thread Pauli Virtanen
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: emacs22

Dead keys appear not to work in emacs22, at least when using a Finnish
keyboard layout.

This is in current Ubuntu Intrepid (but IIRC was also present in Hardy).

To reproduce: Activate Finnish keyboard layout (or some keyboard layout
that has dead keys such as USA International), and press a dead key
combination (eg. AltGr+~ or similar). In other programs you can type
another key after this, to produce ~ or ñ. In emacs22 only message
dead-tilde is undefined appears in the minibuffer. Same with a fresh
guest account.

A workaround is noted here:
http://groups.google.co.uk/group/gnu.emacs.help/browse_thread/thread/d5b1ab43f0ec5203
Basically, (load-library iso-transl) fixes this. I think dead keys should
simply work out-of-the-box in Ubuntu, so could this stanza please be added in
the default Emacs startup scripts (assuming it has no adverse effects)?

Package versions:

emacs22 22.2-0ubuntu1

xev reports the following to occur when a dead key is pressed:

KeyPress event, serial 34, synthetic NO, window 0x1e1,
root 0x1a6, subw 0x0, time 28180805, (953,693), root:(959,742),
state 0x80, keycode 35 (keysym 0xfe53, dead_tilde), same_screen YES,

[Bug 258602] [NEW] emacs window update artefacts

2008-08-16 Thread Pauli Virtanen
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: compiz

Emacs window is redrawn only partially when scrolling. Ubuntu Intrepid,
Nvidia GeForce 7600GS.

To reproduce: open a long file in emacs22, and scroll rapidly with the
mouse wheel or the PgUp/PgDown keys. Notice that at some times not all
of the window is redrawn and old contents are left behind.

This bug does not occur under Metacity, even when Metacity's compositing
is turned on. So I believe it's most likely a compiz bug and not a bug
in X or the video drivers.

[Bug 109434] Re: Installing a server for a game automatically auto-inits and runs every boot.

2008-08-05 Thread Pauli
I think wesnoth-server shouldn't start wesnothd server automatically at
statup. Why so?

Wesnoth client will require wesnothd to be present for some
functionality in 1.6 and is already requiring wesnothd in 1.5
development versions. This is only for minor lan game feature.

Solution that I would think of is that wesnothd binary can be installed using
package wesnoth-server which doesn't make it auto start.
If someone wants to host MP server that starts always that would be provided by
wesnoth-mp-server package. mp-server package would depend on wesnoth-server and
only install configurations to run wesnothd at start up.

[Bug 174427] Re: Tremulous causes X server crash (signal 11) on Radeon 9250 (M9+) 5C61 (AGP)

2008-07-04 Thread Pauli
I have similar problem when trying to run wesnoth in 16bpp screen mode.
It crashes xserver randomly when drawing to screen. 24bpp mode works without
problems.

Wesnoth uses SDL for all operations and native bpp is 32 so SDL needs to
do bpp conversion when running in 16 bpp mode.

I could trace crash to ioctl call to ioctl(7, 0x6444, 0) returning 0. FD
7 is /dev/dri/card0 opened in lr-x-- mode. There is FD 8 wit write
access too to same device.

One think to note is that when I run wesnoth under gdb and use advance
when trying to locate crash it never crashes. But crash rate without gdb
is over 75 %.

Steps to reproduce:
1. set bpp in Xorg.conf to 16
2. startX
3. start the svn version of wesnoth

If not yet crashing
4. Press F5 to reinitialize wesnoth

[Bug 244205] [NEW] Oxygen cursor theme showing up when other is selected

2008-06-30 Thread Henrik Pauli
Public bug reported:

Whenever I install KDE4 to try it, the Oxygen cursor theme gets
installed (which, I’m sorry, but I really really really don’t like and
makes me nauseous and upset). It appears however, that no matter that I
select another theme, Oxygen will try to appear as often as possible to
make my life miserable. I do NOT want to see it in my KDE3 apps when I
have CLEARLY selected the Ubuntu DMZ theme or the Bluecurve theme I
installed. I do NOT want to see it in my KDE4 apps, because I have also
clearly selected otherwise. And I do not want to see it in my Gtk apps
for the exact same reason. Why is it so... ubiquitous? Even so far
that my settings are not honoured?

Yes, uninstalling it fixes my problem, but that also makes the
metapackage for the KDE4 desktop uninstalled, which I want to avoid.
It’s fine if it just sits in my hard drive, but I do not want to ever
see it again on my screen.

This has been so since the theme has first appeared, but only now did I
bother reporting it.

[Bug 244205] Re: Oxygen cursor theme showing up when other is selected

2008-06-30 Thread Henrik Pauli
As is my luck, by the time I open my mouth about it, it starts to behave
like it should. So many times I had to remove the cursor set just so it
wouldn’t pop up randomly… It seems it finally does work, needs a few
restarts and it’s clear.

Aside: is it me or, are the NESW and NWSE cursors mixed up in KDE4 (if I
choose the DMZ theme or the {red|white}glass ones, the corner resize
arrows will be tangential rather than going through the corner, Oxygen
and the thing called “default KDE theme” look right).

[Bug 238897] [NEW] mcedit default indentation settings cause mixture of tabs and spaces

2008-06-10 Thread Henrik Pauli
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: mc

By default, mcedit’s indentation settings are: 8 units per tab, use
tabs, and use fake half tabs.

This causes problems because fake half tabs are in fact tabsize/2 space
characters, and as anyone who has ever indented source code knows:
either use tabs, or spaces, but make up your mind, else havoc is
guaranteed.

I find it especially unwise to propagate such a counterproductive
setting as default. I think Fake Half Tabs would be much better turned
off -- whether people use tabs or spaces, and how many of them is a
wholly different issue altogether.
