I think ath5k is blacklisted in Intrepid so as not to interfere with the
venerable madwifi which does not support atheros 5007 with the hal
ubuntu shipped.

The better work around for atheros 5007 based wireless cards in intrepid
is to install the linux-backports-modules-intrepid-generic module

The intrepid release notes [ located here
https://wiki.ubuntu.com/IntrepidReleaseNotes ] have the workaround which
I have copy pasted for your benefit.

Atheros ath5k wireless driver not enabled by default

The version of the ath5k driver for Atheros wireless devices included in
Linux 2.6.27 interferes with the use of the madwifi driver for some
wireless devices and as a result has been disabled by default. Many
Atheros chipsets will work correctly with the madwifi driver, but some
newer chipsets may not, and the madwifi driver may not work with WPA
authentication. If you have an Atheros device that does not work with
madwifi, you will want to install the linux-backports-modules-intrepid-
generic package, which includes an updated version of the ath5k driver.
While not installed by default, this linux-backports-modules-intrepid-
generic package is included on the Ubuntu 8.10 CD and DVD images for
ease of installation.

[Bug 283241] [NEW] Redundant Firefox update notifications in Intrepid

When update-manager installs a update to Firefox, it shows a message in

for quite some time. However, in Intrepid, if Firefox is running, it

Re: [Bug 182489] Re: Atheros wireless (AR5006EG) not working on ASUS Eee PC

2008-02-27 Thread Andrew Paulin
Yes, Eee users (as well as a few other newer laptops) need the AR5007
driver, but so far, the madwifi devs have been helpless to integrate
the driver into the mainline madwifi driver. IMHO, we should be able
to put the 5007 driver in a seperate package and use
restricted-manager to pick the proper driver, but I'm not aware enough
of how the internals work to know if we can fix it.

[Bug 140811] radeon driver bug causes suspend to fail

2007-09-18 Thread Andrew Paulin
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: xserver-xorg-video-ati

When I attempt to suspend my laptop, it appears to suspend fine.
However, attempting to resume results in a total lockup. The power
light turns steady (as opposed to blinking in standby), the disk light
blinks once, and the fans spin up, but nothing happens at all after
that. I have to resort to a hard reset to revive the machine. After
bouncing around various fourm postings, the culprit appears to be the
ati (the open-source one) driver. My graphics card is a R200 based
Mobility Radeon 9100, but i've heard of the issue with R300 series chips
as well

[Bug 63997] Re: Gnome and KDE battery monitor broken in edgy

2006-10-27 Thread Andrew Paulin
Just found some more info on this bug...
I ran acpi, and got this output:
[EMAIL PROTECTED]:~$ acpi
 Battery 1: discharging, 91%, 00:33:08 remaining
[EMAIL PROTECTED]:~$ hal-device | grep battery
  battery.remaining_time = 1800  (0x708)  (int)

  battery.charge_level.last_full = 1  (0x1)  (int)
  battery.charge_level.current = 1  (0x1)  (int)
  battery.voltage.current = 1  (0x1)  (int)
  battery.reporting.rate = 2300  (0x8fc)  (int)

  info.category = 'battery'  (string)

  linux.acpi_path = '/proc/acpi/battery/BAT1'  (string)

Note the second line of the output of hal-device | grep battery. It
lists the power level as 100, while acpi does not. I see similar output
in the KDE and GNOME power-monitors in the tray to hal-device | grep
battey. Thus, the bug is HAL, not gnome-power-manager.

Note to self: buy an asbestos laptop case :)

** Summary changed:

- Gnome and KDE battery monitor broken in edgy
+ HAL battery status, and thus Gnome and KDE battery monitor broken in edgy

** Description changed:

- Binary package hint: gnome-power-manager
+ Binary package hint: hal

  In Edgy, the power meter does not report the battery life correctly at
  all, in either gnome or kde. It will show plugged/charging and
  approximate battery (100/50/33/0), but not exact life, nor accurate
  time. If I type acpi in a console, it reports accurate battery life.
  My laptop is an Acer Aspire 3003LCi (moblie sempron 754)

When I hover over the icon, it still only shows the approximate status.
The only place I can get an accurate status is acpi

[Bug 63667] Attempting to sync Samsung i500 in edgy fails, sometimes keyboard lockups

2006-10-02 Thread Andrew Paulin
Public bug reported:

When I plug in my Samsung i500 palmphone (PalmOS4) under Edgy, and try
to sync, I usually get no visible response. Checking dmesg, I see the
message Device lied about number of ports, please use a lower one
repeated many times. I have managed to get about 3 syncs out of (large
number). Sometimes, it will also dump weird messages to a terminal, and
then my keyboard becomes useless without a reboot. The palmphone works
fine under a certain other OS.
