[Bug 1172670] Re: THinkPad X121e : WLAN disabled after waking from suspend

2013-10-03 Thread Peter B P
Hello Christopher,

thank you for your suggestion! I updated the BIOS to the latest
available version, and the bug with the WLAN getting turned off after
sleep now appears to be solved.

I've restested with several sleep/wake cycles and the bug does not
appear at all anymore.

[Bug 549107] Re: lucid beta 1 fails to mount external USB 3.0 storage

2013-09-16 Thread Peter B P
Christopher,

thank you for the reminder. I have progressed quite a bit beyond Lucid
since I reported the bug, and I don't have the hardware that I used to
test Lucid on anymore.

For what it's worth, I also have a suspicion that the problem in
question was caused by the USB 3.0 adapter card from Western Digital,
and not the operating system, but that is hard to say anything about at
this point.

In any case, thank you for your attention.

[Bug 1172670] [NEW] THinkPad X121e : WLAN disabled after waking from suspend

2013-04-25 Thread Peter B P
Public bug reported:

Upon suspending this laptop, running Ubuntu 12.10 w/ latest updates,
WLAN hardware becomes disabled (disabled by hardware switch).

Keyboard function key to enable WLAN has no effect.

Installing latest Mainline kernel does not fix the problem, either.

Any suggestions on what I should do to further troubleshoot/diagnose?

Experienced again today, but with the difference that Firefox was not
running. I had VLC play a movie in 200% resolution, and switched back to
an open window in Chrome web-browser. The problem seems to be triggered
solely by VLC. The only console messages I can make out is that the
nouveau releases the fifo_2 on crash and reinitializes it as the login
screen appears after the crash. Nothing else.

had this problem for a while (10.04, latest updates, including proposed-
updates). I think this is a consequence of a different problem with
autostart items not launching.

[Bug 609571] [NEW] software-center does not respond to click on Install

2010-07-24 Thread Peter B P
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: software-center

Trying to install new packages with Ubuntu Software Center does nothign
when clicking INstall button, either from the result list or the More
Info window. Synaptic is NOT running in the backgroup when this
happens.

Tried multiple different packages with same result.

Rebooting does not solve the problem.

Suspect this was caused by a recent update.

Installing packages from SYnaptic does however work well.

[Bug 577678] Re: nm-applet does not show in indicator applet after reboot

2010-06-29 Thread Peter B P
nm-indicator-applet disappeared from my notification area some time
back. I don't know exactly when, but I do remember it was initially
present when I started using 10.04.

Attempt to solve by editing /etc/NetworkManager/nm-system-
settings.conf as discussed on forum has not worked for me.

Note that this coincides with other indicator panel icons missing, fx.
Parcellite, Gnome Do...

[Bug 549107] Re: lucid beta 1 fails to mount external USB 3.0 storage

2010-06-21 Thread Peter B P
Update:

Scratch last comment, I cannot get reliable behavior out of the USB 3.0
drive.

For the better part of the last month, it has seemingly mounted and
functioned okay. Until today, where, upon booting my workstation, I had
several hangs, either during the boot process, or immediately after, on
logging into my accoutn and the gnoem desktop being loaded, shortly
after, the screen froze totally, cursor included.

This happened multiple times, until i had luck in getting to view the
system log, which revealed this (much more than quoted, for brevity
reasons):

Jun 21 12:00:01 winter9 kernel: [ 24.670147] usb 9-2: Device not responding
to set address.
Jun 21 12:00:01 winter9 kernel: [ 24.880306] usb 9-2: Device not responding

Jun 21 12:00:05 winter9 kernel: [ 28.670168] usb 9-2: Device not responding
to set address.
Jun 21 12:00:05 winter9 kernel: [ 28.880311] usb 9-2: Device not responding
to set address.
Jun 21 12:00:06 winter9 kernel: [ 29.090162] usb 9-2: Device not responding
to set address.

etc.

Unplugging the hard drive allowed system to boot and run as normal.

I'm currently running lucid amd64 with proposed-updates.

Barrign hardware failure in the host adapter, I cannot explain this
erratic behavior, but I will consider USB 3.0 hardware unrealiable for
work use until further light is shed on this.

[Bug 591939] Re: lucid - vlc + firefox new windows crashes xorg

2010-06-10 Thread Peter B P
Just crashed again, however, this time, I'd just quite firefox, but I
had VLC playing a video in the background, and i switched to an open
vinagre window, connected to a remote VNC system.

Same three lines in the system log:

Jun 10 13:04:32 winter9 kernel: [ 6021.108864] [drm] nouveau :01:00.0:
nouveau_channel_free: freeing fifo 2

Jun 10 13:04:34 winter9 kernel: [ 6022.882699] [drm] nouveau :01:00.0:

[Bug 591939] [NEW] lucid - vlc + firefox new windows crashes xorg

2010-06-09 Thread Peter B P
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: xserver-xorg-video-nouveau

Lucid system running with the latest updates.

Gfx card is a newer nvidia, running the nouveau driver with no desktop
effects enabled.

I've twice experienced this, with the screen briefly blanking out to a
black tty, outputting a line of text but instantly returing me to the
user login screen. All apps running at the time get killed.

Logs only show this, nothing else:

Jun 9 22:41:05 winter9 kernel: [25050.272102] [drm] nouveau :01:00.0:
nouveau_channel_free: freeing fifo 2
Jun 9 22:41:06 winter9 kernel: [25050.927122] [drm] nouveau :01:00.0:
Allocating FIFO number 2
Jun 9 22:41:06 winter9 kernel: [25050.930600] [drm] nouveau :01:00.0:
nouveau_channel_alloc: initialised FIFO 2

I've semi-consistently been able to cause this crash when I open a new
Firefox window, at the same time as I have VLC running in the
background, playing a video.

I've tried causing the crash again, but it appears it only happens after
the system has been running for a while.

[Bug 574576] Re: lucid final hard freeze w/ screen garbling (suspect xorg crash)

2010-05-21 Thread Peter B P
Status update:

Over the past week, I've experienced a hard freeze once more. Active
apps were Firefox, System Monitor, Deluge torrent, and the gnome-
screensaver.

The freeze was triggered just after the gnome-screensaver kicked in, and
i tried wakign the computer from the screensaver again with a mouse
movement, at which point i found it to have been hard frozen, with the
screensaver stuck on the first picture in the slideshow sequence.

I noticed there was still harddisk (and LAN) activity from time to time
due to an active bittorrent in the background.

[Bug 549107] Re: lucid beta 1 fails to mount external USB 3.0 storage

2010-05-21 Thread Peter B P
Update: I seem to get consistent behavior now.

Status is that if the drive is already hooked up to the PC on boot, it
mounts and runs fine at the expected USB 3.0 speed.

If the drive is not hooked up at the time of boot, plugging it in when
the PC is on will have no effect, and it wont even show anything in the
system log.

Running latest Lucid kernel (2.6.32-22-generic).

Summarizing: It works, it's just the plug detection or functionality
that doesn't.

[Bug 574576] [NEW] lucid final hard freeze w/ screen garbling (suspect xorg crash)

2010-05-03 Thread Peter B P
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: xorg

Firing blind, but will update this as i find out more:

I'm using Lucid Lynx final release, fresh installed, on this system
(Samsung laptop R580, Intel Core i...@2,13 Ghz, 4 G RAM, nvidia 330M).
System has been in use for a few days with this install.

Symptoms: random hard system freezes where the screen either becomes
garbles or torn across the middle (vertically) with no cursor response
to mouse movement, OR (non-garbled) screen freeze with a short lasting
cursor response to mouse movement with a hard freeze of the screen and
all computer activity shortly after, OR an immediate freeze with no
response whatsoever to user input and no screen garbling.

Dropping out to TTY doesnt work; in all cases a hard shutdown is
required, as keyboard input becomes impossible.

Conditions:

Happens uniquely when Firefox is the foremost application and a Firefox
window is active. Freezes tend to happen with moderate windows and tab
number active (fx. 3 windows and perhaps 15 tabs in all).

Other active apps (typically): Pidgin, Vinagre, Nautilus, Gedit, System
monitor.

Other software of interest installed or in use on system: CPU Frequency
Scaling Monitor 2.30.0 (4x, one for each CPU core) attached to
gnomepanel. Gnome-do installed but never invoked at any time close to
crashes.

Other tests: Have been left on overnight with System monitor on the
resources overview to test of that would trigger a crash/freeze, which
it hasn't yet.

Therefore, I suspect that it is a bug in X-org, triggered by Firefox in
an unknown way.

I cannot attach apport information, as it does not report anything upon
reboot (no reports of kernel panics or the like).

System did not show any such behavior during testing Lucid from Beta 2
and up to RC.

[Bug 549107] Re: lucid beta 1 fails to mount external USB 3.0 storage

2010-05-01 Thread Peter B P
Update: On starting my machine (with the new mainline kernel) today, the
hard drive is recognized, but only operates at USB 2.0 speeds. System
log reads:

I see nothing about it switching back to OHCI (which would explain why
I'm only getting speeds of a USB 2.0 disk)...

[Bug 549107] Re: lucid beta 1 fails to mount external USB 3.0 storage

2010-04-28 Thread Peter B P
Heya Jeremy.

I'm just tested it with v2.6.34-rc5-lucid; oddly, the drive isn't even
registered anymore.

System log gives no indication that plugging it in is even noticed by
the system (as log excerpt in original post shows). The drive does not
show in disk utility either.

[Bug 549107] Re: lucid beta 1 fails to mount external USB 3.0 storage

2010-04-28 Thread Peter B P
Hey Jeremy,

No. The port is a pure USB 3.0 port on a Western Digital PCIe expansion
card that came with the hard drive.

It's tested to work fine in Ubuntu Karmic and an earlier release of
Lucid (Beta 2 + some updates). I'm puzzled why it's broken again.

I'm happy to say that today's batch of updates (I'm guessing hdparm

[Bug 549107] Re: lucid beta 1 fails to mount external USB 3.0 storage

2010-04-07 Thread Peter B P
Update afther the last week's worth of updates:

Plugging the same USB 3.0 device now tends to result in a kernel panic,
booting my out my my X session and leaving me at a generic, purple
Ubuntu logo screen, with no response to keyboard or mouse input
whatsoever.

Booting the system with same unit plugged in on power-on leaves a frozen
system after entering user name and password (frozen cursor, no reponse
to keyboard input).

Heya Jeremy,

Thanks for your response. I reported it on the back-then freshly pressed
Karmic in October last year, but haven't run into it since then on the
system I was using it on, which was in about five months of use. If it's
still outstanding, it's triggered too rarely for me to have noticed it

[Bug 534040] Re: new light theme hangs for 20 seconds before desktop loads

2010-03-29 Thread Peter B P
Since the latest updates (20th March), there is still a 20+ second
'hang' before the wallpaper appears, however, now the panels do not
load, but the desktop icons do. With no panels, Lucid is essentially
unusable. Have to use ctrl-alt-delete to restart.

I can confirm that Lucid B1 with last weeks updates take a fair while to
go from sucessful login to wallpaper; Gnome-DO however appears
immediately, but no panels, desktop icons or anything else does for
10-15 seconds. When it does, everything seems to work fine however.

System log spam ends because I've run through ubuntu-bug storage and followed
its instructions to unplug and replug the device; if I hadn't the 'Device not

the HD activity LED is flashing constantly).

2010-03-21 Thread Peter B P
Lucid Beta 1, just installed yesterday on top of a Karmic 9.10.

I get a crash/quit on boot as well, for the followings applets:

The panel encountered a problem while loading
OAFIID:GNOME_FastUserSwitchApplet.
The panel encountered a problem while loading OAFIID:GNOME_IndicatorApplet.

(the FUSA's functionality can be worked-around by pressing ctrl-alt-del,
which bring up the reboot menu.)

[Bug 542600] [NEW] Lucid Beta 1 no graphical login shown

2010-03-20 Thread Peter B P
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gnome-settings-daemon

Upgraded from Karmic (9.10) today.

Used update-manager -d. Update process itself went seemingly well,
however after rebooting, the graphical login fails to show a user
selection dialogue. All that is shown is the wallpaper (plus the login
screen sound plays). Switching to TTY to login via CLI is possible.
invoking 'startx' shows that X is already running.

Sorry I'm firing blind here, as I have no clue what package handles the
user login.

[Bug 493834] Re: boot hangs with Dell 3007WFP-HC at Radeon X1950XTX

2009-12-28 Thread Peter B P
This bug also affects me; latest karmic/9.10 as of 28dec2009.

Problem encountered when replacing an older TFT monitor (Acer 24 -
X243W) with a newer Samsung Syncmaster P2450.

Boot is fine UP TO loading Grub, at which it stalls with the same
symptoms - blank, black screen, but backlight on (so it still receives a
signal from the gfx card). No curser, no screen activity whatsoever.

No system acitivity either, no HD activity.

When i detatch the monitor (connected between gfx card (Radeon HD4650)
and monitor with HDMI cable), boot continues fine, and I'm able to log
in (albeit headlessly). I hear the usual ubuntu greeting sound after
punching in the username and pw.

I have a fast fix (thanks to Stefan Bader above for the hint!):

1) Boot your system in recovery mode (via grub).

2) Get your terminal and edit /etc/uspash.conf (if you want to use
gedit: write 'sudo gedit /etc/usplash.conf' )

3) it's a simple configuration file; edit the dimensions in the two
lines to the native resolution of your display.

4) Save, do a 'sudo initramfs -u' - this will write the setting into the
boot setup.

5) Reboot.

My monitor still looks a bit mushy but at least it returned my sustem to
a workable state.

[Bug 361456] Re: [RS690] fglrx HDMI overscan in both 720p and 1080p modes

2009-12-28 Thread Peter B P
Despite the bug being closed, i hope I can bring some new light on this.

I've obtained a new display today; Samsung SyncMaster P2450 - 1920x1080.
It replaces an older 1920x1200 display.

The new display has native HDMI, the older only had DVI-D, and i used it
with an HDMI-to-DVI adapter to make it work, but it worked fine.

My gfx card is a Radeon HD4650, likewise with a native HDMI port.

After some unrelated bugs with usplash, I've run my head into this -
that the edges of the screen are cut off. Mind, this is not a TV
display, but a regular PC display. After pulling out some newly grown
grey hairs, I succumbed to installing the ATI fglrx drivers, and
discovered that the screen cutoff is related to overscanning (set in
Display Settings Scaling Options). Setting it to a low value
(underscanning) makes the entire desktop vibsible, but making it match
the screen edges precisely seems impossible.

There is still the problem that even though I can line the desktop up
mostly well witht he screen edges, the pixels still seem blurred, and
this is unaceptable.

Uninstalling fglrx reverts the overscan settign back to max, cutting off
the screen edges again.

Since Bryce H. asked for a triage 5 minths ago with the recently updated
drivers then, I'd assume that the bug is not fixed.

I'll try to be of assistance if more needs to be done.

- p

[Bug 88746] Re: ehci_hcd module causes I/O errors in USB 2.0 devices

2009-12-18 Thread Peter B P
I've taken a new system into use today and can confirm that the bug is
NOT unique to alcor USB chips.

The system log gets spammed with this on trying to read from USB 2.0
mass storage devices:

Dec 18 22:13:56 winter9 kernel: [ 2169.570023] usb 1-3: reset high speed
USB device using ehci_hcd and address 2

I am also having severe problems with drive disconnects for 2,5 bus-
powered USB units on the same system. (However the drives in question
work flawlessly on an older Lenovo Portable system).

The Device Manager shows this to be the USB root hub:

82801JI (ICH10 Family) USB2 EHCI Controller #2
Intel Corporation (ASUSTeK Computer Inc.)
PCI (Peripheral Component Interconnect)

It is a USB controller on an ASUS motherboard; P5QL - EPU (Intel P-43
Chipset).

Hope this helps - this bug is unnerving.

I was unable to upload the crash report, as the 300+ megabyutes choked

[Bug 446355] [NEW] pulseaudio stops playing audio and spams system log with error

2009-10-08 Thread Peter B P
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: pulseaudio

Running Karmic Beta, though this error has been present at least since
a6.

After an unknown period of time (my guess: around one hour), the system
is unable to play sounds of user interface or applications.

Opening the Sound preferences incidentally makes the preferences box
blammoon beyond full screen size, forcing me to close it in the taskbar.
Also, it only shows 5 of the total alert sounds.

In addition, the console is spammed with these two kind of messages:

Oct 8 15:51:50 equinox0 pulseaudio[2451]: ratelimit.c: 203 events suppressed
Oct 8 15:51:55 equinox0 pulseaudio[2451]: ratelimit.c: 205 events suppressed

input: too many inputs per sink.
Oct 8 15:57:48 equinox0 pulseaudio[2451]: sink-input.c: Failed to create sink

(repeated many times; cut for the sake of brevity).

Rebooting solves the problem temporarily. WIll be on the lookout for
what triggers it.

2009-06-18 Thread Peter B P
I have just experienced the problem on a LenovoSL500 with this wireless
hardware (quote lspci):

03:00.0 Network controller: Intel Corporation PRO/Wireless 5100 AGN
[Shiloh] Network Connection

Latest Jaunty (9.04), combine with the fact that hooking only my WLAN is
a lengthy process where i need to on/off cycle the wlan hardware 3 or
more times before i manage to get a successful connection, though that
may be unrelated.

[Bug 322614] Re: transmission crashed with SIGSEGV in g_main_context_dispatch()

2009-04-05 Thread Peter B P
Ah, sorry for the above, but on topic: I can still provoke the crashes
from time to time (Jaunty beta, Transmission 1.51), MO is the same - the
Transmission run overnight with a handful of open torrents, open the
properties for any torrent a couple of times, poke around the various
tabs, click CLose, and it hangs for a minute, then quits.

Dear Hew,

thanks for mailing me. I think so, but to be honest, I'm not sure. Long
story short, I'm new to Launchpad and the bug reporting business, and I
have in fact had a handful of Transmission crashes over the last week,
but whenever Apport pops up, I can see it compiles crash reports that
are, MegaByte-wise, well into the double digits (smallest 21 MB, biggest
91 MB!), and whever I send them off, the Launchpad page that usually
results from sending a crash report gives me a timeout error, without
showing me the description of the crash I submitted.

Regarding the crashes, they seem semi-repriducible, and sometimes happen
when I open the properties of an active torrent, click around the tabs
(typically peers and tracker), and afterwards choose to close the
properties window. Te result is full CPU use for about 5 seconds, and
then a crash.

If my reports have been choking your bug submission system, I apologize,
but I don't know how to shorten down the amount of data that I send off
to you.

a good weekend to you,

[Bug 220407] Re: Cannot change screen brightness on Fujitsu T2010 laptop in Intrepid

2009-03-21 Thread Peter B P
This appears to still be the case on portables, specifically for me, on
a Lenovo SL500. Using the Function key to increase brightness by
pressing the brightness UP key combo, will raise the display
brightness by one notch; subsequent key presses will then decrease the
brughtness a single notch, and so it goes - each additional press either
raises or lowers teh display brightness. To get a comfortable brightness
level, i have to reboot the laptop.

On a side note, volume up, down and mute buttons do not work either.
