[Bug 1937007] Re: libnvidia-compute-470 is getting mixed up with nvida graphics drivers, libraries

2021-07-20 Thread Peter Goodall
I am guessing it is both of the Jupyter developers, and Ubuntu
developers struggling with "update-alternatives". The Julia repl seems
to get the right result.

[Bug 1937007] [NEW] libnvidia-compute-470 is getting mixed up with nvida graphics drivers, libraries

2021-07-20 Thread Peter Goodall
Public bug reported:

I'm on `Ubuntu 20.04.2 LTS`.

If I use CUDA from the Julia repl, it is successful.
If I try it from a jupyter notebook, launched from the same repl that
successfully uses CUDA, I get the error

could not load library "libcuda.so.1"

The only instance of that filename is:
```
% locate libcuda.so.1
/usr/lib/x86_64-linux-gnu/libcuda.so.1
```
Which is not in the nvidia install of CUDA. It is from
```
% dpkg -S /usr/lib/x86_64-linux-gnu/libcuda.so.1
 /usr/lib/x86_64-linux-gnu/libcuda.so.1
```

which is maintained by ubuntu core developers.

```
sudo update-alternatives --display cuda
cuda - auto mode
  link currently points to /usr/local/cuda-11.4
  link cuda is /usr/local/cuda
[Bug 1899089] [NEW] Ubuntu 20.04 file browser showing all zfs mounts explicitly in side-panel
2020-10-08 Thread Peter Goodall
Public bug reported:
I have installed Ubuntu 20.04 on zfs. I had previously had zfs datasets
mounted into my 18.04 system. Those mounts are all working in the new
system, but they are displaying as mounts in my file browser with
unmount buttons next to them. I certainly don't want this function. it
is also cluttering my display. It appears similar to Bug 1691908.
My zfs mounts are not removable volumes, they are not in fstab.
I was advised to report the output of `gio mount -li`:
```
Volume(0): efi
  Type: GUnixVolume

   uuid: '8799-8F8E'

[Bug 1691908] Re: fstab binds appear as mounts (x-gvfs-hide is being ignored)

2020-10-08 Thread Peter Goodall
@Sebastien,

Thanks, but I am struggling to find a PID to report this against. So I
had to find related subject-matter - Bug 1691908 was the most relevant I
could locate. So what do I report this against? I don't really do Ubuntu
internals, so my knowledge of relevant subsystems is limited. It isn't
like Smalltalk where I can click on the offending item and drop into an
inspector.

`ubuntu-bug` requires a PID. '

`sudo gio mount -li ` output doesn't seem to help... The zfs mount-
points are not removable drives...

  However, when booting the Windows 10 Entry from grub, I get 4 errors:

  error: not a partition
  error: device format "lvmid/ozz..." invalid must be (f|h)dN, with 0 <= N <

  My belief is that if update-grub can create a grub menu entry. The
  devices referenced in that entry should be able to be found by the grub
  boot-loader runtime.

  I have _minimal_ expertise in grub2. I suggest either the grub menu
  entry has been incorrectly generated or interpreted, or perhaps the
  driver required to see the nvme drive is not available to the grub
  runtime.

[Bug 1822892] [NEW] grub2 update-grub detects Windows 10 on nvme drive, cannot find device of generated entry

2019-04-02 Thread Peter Goodall
Public bug reported:

I have Ubuntu 18.04.2 LTS and grub 2 installed which boots from a sata
SSD drive. This a BIOS system, not UEFI.

I have a Windows 10 system restored to an nvme drive on a pci-card. I
can boot this windows-10 system in VirtualBox.

Ubuntu can see my nvme drive perfectly well, and update-grub finds the
Windows 10 system. Here is the generated section of /boot/grub/grub.cfg
:

### BEGIN /etc/grub.d/30_os-prober ###
menuentry 'Windows 10 (on /dev/nvme0n1p1)' --class windows --class os
$menuentry_id_option 'osprober-chain-4E76C42676C4111F' {
insmod part_msdos
insmod ntfs
if [ x$feature_platform_search_hint = xy ]; then
  search --no-floppy --fs-uuid --set=root  4E76C42676C4111F
else
  search --no-floppy --fs-uuid --set=root 4E76C42676C4111F
fi
parttool ${root} hidden-
drivemap -s (hd0) ${root}
chainloader +1
}

blkid can report on the drive:

% sudo blkid /dev/nvme0n1p1
/dev/nvme0n1p1: LABEL="OS" UUID="4E76C42676C4111F" TYPE="ntfs"
PARTUUID="000131d8-01"

However, when booting the Windows 10 Entry from grub, I get 4 errors:

error: no such devices 4E76C42676C4111F
error: not a partition
error: device format "lvmid/ozz..." invalid must be (f|h)dN, with 0 <= N < 120.
error: invalid signature

My belief is that if update-grub can create a grub menu entry. The
devices referenced in that entry should be able to be found by the grub
boot-loader runtime.

I have _minimal_ expertise in grub2. I suggest either the grub menu
entry has been incorrectly generated or interpreted, or perhaps the
driver required to see the nvme drive is not available to the grub
runtime.

[Bug 1804721] [NEW] netplan try fails through to generic error handler when specifying bridge

2018-11-22 Thread Peter Goodall
Public bug reported:

Ubuntu 18.04.1 LTS, Release:18.04

adding a specification for a bridge to /etc/netplan/01-my_network.yaml
causes a fail-over to a catch-all exception handler. No useful debugging
information is given. ( i wish you had markdown )

$ sudo netplan try -debug
Error while loading /etc/netplan/01-my_network.yaml, aborting.

the source file has contents:

"
# Let netplan manage all devices on this system
network:
  version:2
  renderer:   networkd
  ethernets:
enp5s0:
  dhcp4:  yes
  dhcp6:  no

   bridges:
lxdbr0:
  dhcp4:  yes
  interfaces:
- enp5s0
"

It loads without error if the bridges section is removed. The file is a simple
example from https://netplan.io/examples#bridging
I have tried several other configurations, all fail when bridging is attempted.

I believe the netplan source is at:
https://github.com/CanonicalLtd/netplan/blob/master/netplan/configmanager.py

I'm guessing the handler should not be activated.

except (IOError, yaml.YAMLError): # pragma: nocover (filesystem
failures/invalid YAML)
logging.error('Error while loading {}, aborting.'.format(yaml_file))
sys.exit(1)

Thanks Tom - I just in-place upgraded from Xenial to Bionic. I used
aptitude to purge texstudio, checked my ppa config, then installed

All working I believe.

[Bug 1739836] [NEW] dependency failed for pNFS block layout mapping daemon

2017-12-22 Thread Peter Goodall
Public bug reported:

> lsb_release -rd
Description:Ubuntu 16.04.3 LTS
Release:16.04

I believe the package is: nfs-kernel-server

my boot screen reports:

dependency failed for pNFS block layout mapping daemon.

If I ask for status on the service I get:

```
nfs-blkmap.service - pNFS block layout mapping daemon
   Loaded: loaded (/lib/systemd/system/nfs-blkmap.service; static; vendor
preset: enabled)
   Active: inactive (dead)
```

if I enter `sudo dmesg | grep -i depe ` I get:

```
...
[3.389944] systemd[1]: Dependency failed for pNFS block layout mapping
daemon.
[3.389973] systemd[1]: nfs-blkmap.service: Job nfs-blkmap.service/start
failed with result 'dependency'.
```
looks very similar to problem reported in:

  https://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=2321336
and

[Bug 1723256] Re: snapd and snapd-xdg-open packages conflict

2017-10-12 Thread Peter Goodall
Thanks - I notice that snapd 2.28.4 is marked as (xenial-proposed) in
Synaptic. Is that a correct tag for a release? Sorry I don't know the
conventional terminology.

[Bug 1654708] Re: Trying to reinstall ZFS on Xenial. Cannot mount existing zpool with identifier from /mnt/disk/by-id/xxxx

2017-02-07 Thread Peter Goodall
Hello all,

I believe a fix was just delivered to my workstation. It failed to build on my
machine. I have attached the log at:
/var/lib/dkms/zfs/0.6.5.6/build/make.log

An automated error report should appear attached to this topic as well.
Not sure how that error report gets delivered. If i need to submit any
more files - please let me know.

Cheers...

2017-01-22 Thread Peter Goodall
Hi Michael,

Looks like this email was direct from you. I'm just a user that reported
the bug using the reporting system in Xenia. No hope in hell of me fixing
it :-)
I'm not even really sure how you should add your feedback to the bug
reporting system.

Cheers,

[Bug 1654708] [NEW] Trying to reinstall ZFS on Xenial. Cannot mount existing zpool with identifier from /mnt/disk/by-id/xxxx

2017-01-06 Thread Peter Goodall
Public bug reported:

Description:Ubuntu 16.04.1 LTS
Release:16.04

zfs-dkms 0.6.5.6-0ubuntu15

I cant mount/install my zpool. so i tried reinstalling zfslinux-utils,
which gives me three error messages like this: "zfs-mount.service is a
disabled" or a static unit, not starting it."...

If something doesn't work I try googling error messages. most answers
not totally like my problem but related to dkms, so I tried loading zfs-
dkms and reinstalling zfslinux-utils.

I created the zpool with id from /mnt/disk/by-id/ - which is zfs good-
practice. This may be causing problems with the mount. I dont know...

Cheers.

Re: [Bug 1609652] Re: gnome-language-selector incorrectly installed/configured

2016-08-10 Thread Peter Goodall
Thanks Gunnar,

Sorry I haven’t been quicker replying.

This is an awful bug-report I’ve done.

   -

   My original problem was I couldn’t install software from the Ubuntu
   Software App in the dock, because everything was displayed as a little
   lozenge with an ellipses (…) in it.
   -

   Googling for people reporting a similar problem, I was led to believe
   that it was because there was a problem with the base language not being
   properly configured.
   -

   There were about 60 packages updated this-morning. Perhaps I should have
   taken a snapshot before I updated to help with this report.
   -

   After pulling Australian English to the top of the list, and installing
   the package updates. I can search and find software packages in the Ubuntu
   Software App. What enabled this - I cant be sure. I’ve enabled a Heisenbug…

Some interspersed comments below.

Many Thanks,
—Peter Goodall

After about 45 years of computing, I associate greyed-out with unavailable.
As you say, when I drag my Australian language to the top of the list, it
became solid. Quite unusual UI. So much going on I didn’t read the notice
under the selector. My Apologies.

Because the language selections were greyed-out I assumed I needed to
install them, when I went to the Install/Remove Languages dialog. I
couldn’t see Australian English in the list. Was not expecting to see two
structurally different language lists.

   - For me ‘Australian English’ greyed-out meant I had to install it.
   - When I went to install it, only a ‘generic’ English was available, and
   it was already selected.

*I think it would be worth-while making this a little less surprising in
the UI*

[Bug 1609652] [NEW] gnome-language-selector incorrectly installed/configured

2016-08-04 Thread Peter Goodall
Public bug reported:

> lsb_release -rd
Description:Ubuntu 16.04.1 LTS
Release:16.04

I believe that language support is not correctly installed configured. I
was lead to the gnome-language-selector by trying to understand why the
Ubuntu Software app failed to find any applications/search its database.

One solution proposed was to change language selections from Language
Support in settings. When I tried this the only languages available for
selection are US English and English. Other languages, including
Australian English were visible in the list but 'greyed-out'.

I failed by any means to install further language support, including
using the 'Install/Remove Languages' button on the "Language Support
dialog.

When I trued to report this problem I used the system app to find the
process. It is called gnome-language-selector in the process list and
process properties. ubuntu-bug said "dpkg-query: no packages found
matching gnome-language-selector". But there it was in the process list.
I then used ubuntu-bug -w to initiate this bug report.

[Bug 591575] Re: rubygems1.8 does not work - apppears misconfigured

2010-06-09 Thread Peter Goodall
I found a similar problem described in:
http://groups.google.com/group/sdruby/browse_thread/thread/d3ba3a487714bdb4?pli=1

I installed build-essential ruby-dev 4.2 libruby1.8-dbg  and retried
'sudo gem install rub-debug' after this, the gem installed correctly.

I suggest that there are missing dependencies on the ruby-gems package.

Cheers

Thanks guys.

Very poor diagnostics for a beginner. I'd think that ruby-debug might be
a core facility. Cant debug in eclipse and who knows what else.
