2013-05-27 Thread Peter Hillier-Brook
The header states that this bug affects 1 person (me). This is not
srictly accurate as the bug will affect any user who wishes to use
Synaptic with a *fresh* install of Kubuntu 13.04.

Sorry, no can do. The bug left me with an unusable system - /boot was
empty! - so I re-installed from scratch, including formatting all
partitions.

[Bug 501475] [NEW] device.map not correctly updated after update-grub

2009-12-29 Thread Peter Hillier-Brook
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: grub2

Adding a new, third SATA disk and installing Mythbuntu (but NOT GRUB) to
complement Windows 7 on sda (with GRUB in the MBR) and Ubuntu 9.10 on sdb,
followed by update-grub produced a device.map containing:
(hd0) /dev/sda
(hd1) /dev/sdb
(hd2) /dev/sdg

Naturally booting from the third drive failed. I have no idea where the
'g' came from, but editing device.map manually to the correct 'sdc' for
hd2 restored the boot function. Obviously this action resolved my
original problem, but others may encounter this bug hence this report. A
secondary question is whether manual editing of device.map is a
preferred method, or is there an alternative?

Yes, I do have a separate /boot partition, as I do on a single disk
installation where memtest86+ loads correctly, leading to my allegedly
incorrect diagnosis!

Sincere apologies for the above. I had forgotten that the single disk
system is the *only* one I have that doesn't keep /boot in a separate
partition.
