The original description is not accurate (any more?, can't remember). The situation is: After mt -f /dev/st0; tar cvf /dev/st0 what_ever, i get the problems described in the DMESG above. After some seconds the SCSI bus messes up. In order to eliminate hardware problems I've tried to start with Olive, an Live CD based on OpenBSD 3.8. Tar-ing / (root node) to the tape works without problems.
