2021-02-02 Thread Peter Rhone
Fixed. Turned out that a ram stick had failed. Not sure why it seemed
fine with kernel 5.8, but memtest86 confirmed the error and after
swapping out the ram the problem has disappeared.

[Bug 1913230] [NEW] Regression in kernel 5.10.0-12-generic - NVRM Xid 13 and 32, Gnome unusable

2021-01-25 Thread Peter Rhone
Public bug reported:

Desktop became unusable after updating kernel from 5.8 to 5.10. Kernel
spammed with NVRM Xid errors 13 and 32 reporting Graphics exception
MISSING_MACRO_DATA among other things. Same symptoms with nvidia drivers
450 and 460. Works, however, with the nouveau driver. Booting kernel 5.8
fixes the issue, but obviously isn't a long term solution.

[Bug 1719210] Re: Bluetooth audio to A2DP headset no longer works following upgrade from 4.12 to 4.13 in artful

2017-10-18 Thread Peter Rhone
I have to correct my earlier statement (comment 14), the linux-firmware
package update didn't fix the problem after all - it seemed to work for
a while, but I was mistaken. Now, however, I've gotten it working. The
correct fix is to add the following line to the end of
/etc/modprobe.d/iwlwifi.conf

options iwlwifi bt_coex_active=0

After a reboot, you can test if the option is enabled with

cat /sys/module/iwlwifi/parameters/bt_coex_active

(Should return 'N').

Since I added that option, I haven't had any further issues with my Sony
Bluetooth Speaker (or WiFi).

[Bug 1720842] Re: USB Keyboard "Masione VMJ-02" ID 1c4f:0056 SiGma Micro: Ctrl / Super / Alt incorrectly recognized as L-Shift

2017-10-06 Thread Peter Rhone
I was just sitting down to figure out how to write a device driver, and
when I loaded the usbmon module and fired up wireshark the keyboard
started behaving. The first few keys were captured with the "modified"
keycodes that the usbhid driver doesn't recognize properly, then it
seems to have switched into "normal" mode and behaved like a regular usb
keyboard. I tried it on two computers with the same result, i.e. sudo
modprobe usbmon, sudo wireshark "fixes" the problem for some strange
reason. Now if only I could figure out how to trigger the mode switch in
a less annoying way that would be great.

Yes, the bug exists for me all kernels > 4.12, up to and including 4.14-rc3.
I can no longer use my Sony Bluetooth Speaker SRS-XB40.

@Bowsher's hack of putting
options bt_coex_active=0
in /etc/modprobe.d/iwlwifi.conf
is no solution, since I need both BT and WiFi.

[Bug 1720842] [NEW] USB Keyboard "Masione VMJ-02" ID 1c4f:0056 SiGma Micro: Ctrl / Super / Alt incorrectly recognized as L-Shift

2017-10-02 Thread Peter Rhone
Public bug reported:

It's a new keyboard and basically unusable due to the incorrect key
recognition by usbhid module. I have scoured the net for similar
problems, and found an identical sounding bug for an Azio keyboard. I
tried that driver after modifying the source code to apply to
1c4f:0056, but to no avail.

[Bug 1720342] [NEW] After update to kernel 4.13, can no longer connect Bluetooth Speaker (Sony SRS-SB40)

2017-09-29 Thread Peter Rhone

still does if I reboot into that kernel. But it doesn't work with 4.13,
or 4.13.1 which I just installed (from mainline kernel repository).
Haven't tried 4.14 yet.

[Bug 1639223] [NEW] Cannot connect to web with bluetooth connection after resuming from suspend

2016-11-04 Thread Peter Rhone
Public bug reported:

If I resume from suspend and reconnect my phone's bluetooth internet
connection, my web browsers claim I'm offline. I can successfully ping
8.8.8.8 but cannot resolve domain names. Restarting network manager with

[Bug 1638946] [NEW] Mobile broadband / Bluetooth connections cannot be permanently removed from Network-Manager

2016-11-03 Thread Peter Rhone
Public bug reported:

In network manager, there are a few obsolete cellphones listed whose
bluetooth connections I once used to go online. I can't remove them
permanently. They don't show up in/etc/NetworkManager/system-
connections/, I can't find them in gconf-editor either. I can remove
them until the next reboot using either the "Edit connections..." dialog
in the applet, or by issuing 'nmcli connection delete uuid X' at the
command line, but they always show up again after the next reboot.

[Bug 869485] Re: Can not rearrange slides in ODP file

2011-10-09 Thread Peter Rhone
With the attached odp, after opening the presentation, switch
immediately to the slide sorter view, and try to move the slides with
images to a new location. The image changes to that of another slide,
and general randomness with loss of information is the result.

[Bug 869485] [NEW] Can not rearrange slides in ODP file

2011-10-06 Thread Peter Rhone
Public bug reported:

I have a file, originally imported from a pptx file, but now saved as an
odp. It is impossible to rearrange the slides. No matter which slide I
drag where, some other slide always appears at the location I try to
drop to, and the slide I was trying to move disappears. The workaround,
it seems, is to save the file as a ppt 2003 file and restart libreoffice
with the new ppt file.

[Bug 829163] Re: Lightdm does not start with nvidia-current driver installed

2011-09-11 Thread Peter Rhone
I've tried all nvidia drivers, including direct downloads from the
website. Nothing works. I haven't tried installing gdm and using that
instead, however. May be worth a shot.

Right now I'm using nouveau with experimental 3D support, which works
for basic things, but not for my OpenGL development work.

This is *not* fixed by the Unity update (currently installed

This bug is tagged as incomplete. If it is incomplete, please tell me

[Bug 763141] [NEW] Everything in Panel appears twice

2011-04-16 Thread Peter Rhone
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: indicator-applet

My Plasma TV Monitor was coming up as 1024x768 after an upgrade to
Natty. To restore the native resolution of 1360x768, I added the
commands:

xrandr --newmode 1360x768_60.00 84.75 1360 1432 1568 1776 768 771 781 798
-hsync +vsync
xrandr --addmode VGA1 1360x768_60.00
xrandr --output VGA1 --mode 1360x768_60.00

To /etc/gdm/Init/Default

This fixed the resolution problem, but unfortunately has messed with the
panel in Unity. I will attach a screenshot. Essentially the entire
indicator area appears twice, side by side. Both copies are fully
functional.

I tried switching to Unity 2D to see if somehow that would help, but it
didn't make a difference.

Any help would be appreciated.

[Bug 670181] Re: Dell Precision M6300 SD Card Reader (Ricoh R5C592 memory stick) Will Not Mount After Upgrade To 10.10

2011-03-14 Thread Peter Rhone
Just tried the 11.04 Kernel: 2.6.38-020638rc8-generic #201103081151 SMP
Tue Mar 8 11:57:03 UTC 2011 x86_64 GNU/Linux - still no recognition of
an SD card.

There seems to be a working driver whose author (Maxim Levitsky) is
trying to get it included in 2.6.39. If that happens, it still won't be
of much use to Natty users unless they install a custom kernel. You
could always patch the current kernel yourself, but that has
disadvantages as well (i.e. no security updates without repatching,
etc., binary drivers, etc...).

[Bug 707751] [NEW] Occasionally the indicator applet items are missing, overlapping, un-clickable

Every second or third time the computer boots up, the shutdown icon is

[Bug 641494] [NEW] Settings in .gtkrc-2.0 not honoured in evolution's mail composition window

2010-09-17 Thread Peter Rhone
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: evolution

I am setting up a computer for a visually impaired user who has trouble
seeing the caret/cursor in its default setting. I created the file
.gtkrc-2.0 in the home directory and filled it in with the following
text:

style custom {
GtkEntry::cursor_aspect_ratio = 0.9
GtkTextView::cursor_aspect_ratio = 0.9
EelEditableLabel::cursor_aspect_ratio = 0.9
GtkWidget::cursor_aspect_ratio = 0.9
}
widget class * style custom

This had the effect of making the caret/cursor visible everywhere in
Gnome, and in most fields of Evolution, however, in the mail composition
window the cursor settings are not honored. This, unfortunately, has the
effect of making Evolution completely unusable for this person, so I
will have to search for alternatives, perhaps Thunderbird.

This bug is not a regression, searching the interwebs turned up a casual
reference to the same behavior in Ubuntu 8.04

If I leave an SDHC card in the built-in reader (may also be true for
older 2GB SD cards, but I don't have any to test) and attempt to
suspend, the screen goes dark (but backlight still on) and the computer

[Bug 449582] Re: Hideous BEEP on new email

2010-08-09 Thread Peter Rhone
*** This bug is a duplicate of bug 77010 ***
https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/77010

Just to add my two cents: although this has been already mentioned
elsewhere (but #77010) but I'd like to add that to mute the PC Beep,
start alsamixer, select PC Beep with the arrow keys and press 'm'.
Simply setting the volume bars to 0 is *not* enough! This completely
solved the issue for me in Lucid on a Dell XPS M1530. (along with
blacklisting pcspkr, but that is default now anyway)

[Bug 609980] [NEW] Hardlock when attempt to suspend with SD card in slot on Dell XPS M1530

2010-07-26 Thread Peter Rhone
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: acpi-support

If I leave an SDHC card in the built-in reader (may also be true for
older 2GB SD cards, but I don't have any to test) and attempt to
suspend, the screen goes dark (but backlight still on) and the computer
remains frozen in this state until the battery dies. It doesn't repond
to ctrl-alt-F1 or Alt-SysRq-R-S-E-I-U-B. The only way to turn it off it
to hold the power button down for a few seconds.

I'm running a fully updated Ubuntu Lucid system, but if my memory serves
me correctly this was also true in 9.10.

[Bug 127707] Re: airport-utils: airport-config does not run with Java 6.

2010-07-20 Thread Peter Rhone
I'm trying to setup an Apple Time Capsule, and couldn't get it to work
with either java-6-sun or java-6-openjdk (Ubuntu 10.04). It runs,
however, if you temporarily switch to java-gcj with:

sudo update-java-alternatives --set java-gcj

... and after the setup switch back to sun (or whatever you were using)
with:

sudo update-java-alternatives --set java-6-sun

[Bug 127707] Re: airport-utils: airport-config does not run with Java 6.

2010-07-20 Thread Peter Rhone
To comment #6: the dialog runs, but Discover Devices fails, so the
workaround isn't much of one. So far, the only viable alternative seems
to be the use of a mac or windows computer to set these devices up.

2010-07-20 Thread Peter Rhone
Final comment: it does work after all. After a hard factor reset, enter
the IP address 10.0.0.1 and password public, then you can retrieve the
settings and set the device up. Simply ignore the Discover Devices
button, which doesn't work.

[Bug 521394] Re: After resume from suspend with encrypted USB drive connected, cannot reattach device

2010-02-14 Thread Peter Rhone
Ah right - if cryptsetup isn't installed, the enter password dialog
still appears, but entering the password doesn't actually do anything.
The problem here is probably with gvfs adding two entries for a single
device, though it is claiming that cryptsetup exited with exit code
239

This is a default Ubuntu/Gnome desktop. I haven't added anything other
than a few codecs and programming tools.

[Bug 521394] [NEW] After resume from suspend with encrypted USB drive connected, cannot reattach device

2010-02-13 Thread Peter Rhone
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: cryptsetup

I connect my USB Drive with encrypted content (using cryptsetup). After
suspending and resuming, a window appears asking for the password, which I
reenter. Following correct entry of the password, a message box appears with
the following message: Unable to mount 250 GB Encrypted Error unlocking
device: cryptsetup exited with exit code 239: Command failed: Device already
exists
Sure enough, nautilus has two entries: one from before the suspend action which
is no longer labeled as encrypted, and, oddly, is now mounted as read-only. The
file are accessible through this entry. The other quasi duplicate entry is
labeled as encrypted but cannot be mounted (see error msg above).
