[Bug 1932328] Re: Thunderbird under Wayland does not correctly close (or manage) windows

2021-06-28 Thread Phil Hughes
I'm seeing the same thing after the recent update to Thunderbird 78.11.
Ubuntu 21.04 on Wayland. x11 is ok. In my case it appears to be related
to the Reminder dialogue opening. Some more details:

Start Thunderbird and make sure the Reminder dialogue does not open (eg by
snoozing any reminders in a previous session).
Open a few emails in new windows - everything works as normal.

Now set a calendar entry for a few minutes and wait for the reminder
dialogue to pop up.

Icon on dock shows indicator showing two open window
Open an email in a new window
Icon on dock shows indicator showing three open windows
Close email
Icon on dock still shows indicator showing three open windows
Icon on dock is now unresponsive to left click. Right-click shows the menu
listing all the windows you have opened, but is unresponsive and stays on the
screen. It goes if you press "Super" twice.

Then switch to Thunderbird using Alt-tab
Repeat until more than 4 windows have been opened - icon show the maximum 4
indicators.
Close Thunderbird using Quit from the menu (ps shows no running Thunderbird
processes)
Dock still shows icon with 4 indicators
Left or right click no longer does anything. A middle-click starts a new
instance of Thunderbird.

I have successfully logged into a desktop on the same computer running
the latest xenial daily build (07-Mar-2016) and the display was being

[Bug 1381483] [NEW] Desktop sharing display frozen

2014-10-15 Thread Phil Hughes
Public bug reported:

I can connect to a 14.10 desktop, but the update of the display is
frozen in the VNC client. I see the desktop, with launcher and panel,
but the time is stuck. Clicking on an app in the launcher does start the
app, but the app does not appear on the VNC client screen. This happens
when logging in using either Remmina on Ubuntu 14.04 on UltraVNC from a
Windows 8.1 PC. Someone reported in the forums that this also happens
when using x11vnc.

Re: [Bug 1058346] Re: Touchpad not working on Acer Aspire One 725

2013-01-22 Thread Phil Hughes
Updating the BIOS has not corrected the problem. The problem still exists
with the current Raring image. Raring did, however, fix another issue --
not being able to change the screen brightness.

 http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?s=cec0ec3dc913c2a7b7e5579ce76e8609t=2020719page=2

I have tested through the following mainline kernels and this issue is
 not reproducible:
   v3.5.1-quantal/
   v3.5.2-quantal/
   v3.5.3-quantal/
   v3.5.4-quantal/

This workaround will fix the problem partially:

   Open the Terminal
   cd /etc/modprobe.d/
   gksudo gedit options.conf
In the text editor, type: options psmouse proto=imps
Save the file and close it.
   sudo modprobe -r psmouse
   sudo modprobe psmouse

but has sideeffects as you will read.

WORKAROUND: Pushing Fn+F7 (which is the turn on combination for the
touchpad) before loging in makes the tp work perfectly.

[Bug 1058346] Re: Touchpad not working on Acer Aspire One 725

2013-01-22 Thread Phil Hughes
Let me clarify my response. I did exactly what you suggested on exactly
the computer that was the subject of this bug report and reported the
results -- namely that the problem was not corrected. I only mentioned
the other issue -- one which is also reported elsewhere -- because it
did change and I felt that t might help with analysis of this problem.

[Bug 1059726] Re: Mounting drives that have '\040' in the name in fstab throws up an error during boot.

2012-11-25 Thread Phil Hughes
*** This bug is a duplicate of bug 1059471 ***

Version 2.42ubuntu0.1 has fixed this for me.

Strangely, mountall --version still reports the version as 2.39.
Software Centre and dpkg -s both report 2.42.

[Bug 1059726] Re: Mounting drives that have '\040' in the name in fstab throws up an error during boot.

2012-10-20 Thread Phil Hughes
I also see this on a system upgraded to 12.10 from 12.04.

I have an ssd (system/home) and two internal hard drives, one for data
and one for storing backups. There are two entries in fstab as follows:

UUID=2cb4aef5-637c-44fa-b7a2-d4ba52f98545 /media/data ext4 defaults 0 2
UUID=de6514b0-b7a9-49ca-a7ab-c19be1431636 /media/Backup\040Drive ext4 defaults
0 2

When I boot up, I just get a black screen. Pressing Ctrl-Alt-F1 then
Ctrl-Alt-F7 gets me the X console (going straight to F7 doesn't work)
which shows:

An error occured while mounting /media/Backup Drive.
Press S to skip mounting or M for manual recovery.

If I press S, booting continues ok.

data is mounted as expected with owner root, Backup Drive is mounted
with owner phil.

(Unmounted, both /media/data and /media/Backup Drive have owner root and
permissions 755).

The following is shown in /var/log/boot.log (file attached):

mountall: Event failed
mount: /dev/sdc1 already mounted or /media/Backup Drive busy
mount: according to mtab, /dev/sdc1 is already mounted on /media/Backup Drive
mountall: mount /media/Backup Drive [824] terminated with status 32
mountall: Filesystem could not be mounted: /media/Backup Drive

(If I comment out the line for Backup Drive, boot proceeds ok, it
doesn't get mounted and there are no entries in boot.log).

This all worked fine in 12.04.

Two external drives which also have spaces in the names get mounted
fine.

Phil Hughes, thank you for reporting this and helping make Ubuntu

Can you try with the latest development release of Ubuntu? ISO CD images
 are available from http://cdimage.ubuntu.com/releases/ .

If it remains an issue, could you run the following command from a
 Terminal (Applications-Accessories-Terminal). It will automatically
gather and attach updated debug information to this report.

 apport-collect -p linux replace-with-bug-number

Also, if you could test the latest upstream kernel available that would
be great. It will allow additional upstream developers to examine the
issue. Refer to https://wiki.ubuntu.com/KernelMainlineBuilds . Once
you've tested the upstream kernel, please remove the 'needs-upstream-
testing' tag. This can be done by clicking on the yellow pencil icon
next to the tag located at the bottom of the bug description and
deleting the 'needs-upstream-testing' text. Please let us know your
 results.

 Thanks in advance.

Re: [Bug 763574] Re: Natty in loop starting X/KDE

2011-04-17 Thread Phil Hughes
Exactly the same thing happens.

Note that after the boot (on both USB and CD) the world (3rd) icon is
starting to display when the display goes black. Subsequently, this happens
on the disk (1st) icon. Not a lot of help but I am guessing that some other
process that is starting is the problem which is slowed up at first when
everything else is starting up.

Wish I could be more helpful but I see no way to get in and see what is
going on.

Following ceg's link to Phoronix, I can confirm that setting Option

Ceg - you need an xorg.conf with this line in it. However you may not
have an existing xorg.conf - the following xorg.conf worked for me. If
you need more help than this, you should probably ask in the forums.

[Bug 346331] Re: Nautilus won't run from Sessions or Startup Applications

2009-12-22 Thread Phil Hughes
Chris, when I filed the original report, I wasn't aware that nautilus
was more than a file manger. What I want is to launch the nautilus file
manager at startup, just as if I'd typed nautilus in a terminal, or went
Places Home Folder. An entry like this worked in 8.04, but hasn't
worked since. The nautilus.desktop file is attached (actually in
~/.config/autostart). For info, when clicking on this and doing launch
anyway, a nautilus window is started.

[Bug 440544] [NEW] Occasional screen corruption with Radeon 4770

2009-10-02 Thread Phil Hughes
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: xorg

There is occasional corruption of the screen when using a Sapphire
Radeon 4770 card with the open source radeon drivers. The takes the form
of a chequered effect, looking a bit like a chequer board. This is
most noticeable when the screen goes grey (eg when typing gksudo ..) but
can also be seen at other times eg in System Preferences , Appearance,
Theme, the icons for each theme show this. The menus in KeePassX are
corrupted.

The effect does not show when using the fglrx driver when the screen
goes grey, though the Theme icons do still show this same corruption. An
attachment shows a screenshot of the grey screen effect.

[Bug 313027] Re: MASTER: fglrx does not support xserver 1.6

2009-04-10 Thread Phil Hughes
Is it a good idea to file a bug for the below seperately?

I knew that my card was no longer supported by fglrx in 9.04. However, I
went ahead and tried to upgrade from 8.10 to 9.04a6 anyway to see what would
happen (it was not on my main computer). The installer correctly identified
that my card was not supported by the new fglrx driver. I assumed
(incorrectly!) that it would therefore disable the fglrx driver whilst doing
the upgrade and went ahead. This left me with an unbootable computer (in
graphics mode) until I ran some command line voodoo.

Can I suggest that as a minimum that if the installer detects an unsupported
card and fglrx is being used, it refuses to go ahead with the upgrade until
the user has switched back to the ati driver. Preferably the installer would
do this.

Not being a dev, I don't how easy or possible this is, but is would save a lot
of broken upgrades.

I did wonder about this, but on the beta page it says:

Upgrading a desktop system using an ATI video chipset with the fglrx
binary-only driver may result in a warning that the driver needs to be
replaced. There is a bug in the driver replacement logic, so if you see
this prompt, please cancel the upgrade until this is fixed, which will
happen immediately after the beta release.

so I wondered if this was what it was referring to and they had it
covered?

[Bug 346331] [NEW] Nautilus won't run from Sessions or Startup Applications

2009-03-21 Thread Phil Hughes
Public bug reported:

On Ubuntu 8.10, Nautilus won't run from Sessions. This happens on three
computers, two clean installs, one an upgrade from 8.04 (where it used
to work). I have also upgraded one of the computers to 9.04alpha6, and
the same happens. I have tried entering the command as:

nautilus
/usr/bin/nautilus
sleep 30 /usr/bin/nautilus

[Bug 336058] [NEW] Jaunty a5 won't start X on ThinkPad T20, T23

2009-02-28 Thread Phil Hughes
Public bug reported:

When installing Jaunty alpha 5 on an IBM Thinkpad T20 or T23, the world
hangs (X never comes up). It runs fine off the live CD. Both these
systems have run previous versions of Kubuntu with no problems. The CD
passes validity test and has been successfully installed on an ASUS
laptop.

[Bug 74875] Garbled screen during install

2006-12-07 Thread Phil Hughes
Public bug reported:

Brought up Kubuntu Feisty on a T23 thinkpad (standard test machine for
me). Clicked install and after Step 4, the screen ended up grabled. Re-
started the install and picked 1024x768 resolution at boot time and the
problem did not re-occur.

[Bug 52386] Default version doesn't print correctly

2006-07-08 Thread Phil Hughes
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: kbarcode

Dapper Drake installs Kbarcode 1.8.0. I made a label and tried to print
it. It prints wrong no matter what font is selected. The bug is also
described at
http://www.kbarcode.net/forum/index.php?PHPSESSID=f43b3e707b674ba33c66ebf834ee3025topic=185.msg1006#msg1006
and his solution was to install Kbarcode 2.0.3 and it worked fine.
Sounds like a package upgrade is the answer.
