Re: [Bug 1890843] Re: Freeze
Hi Daniel, Thanks so much for your email and for your efforts looking into this for me! The idea of upgrading to 20.04 is well-taken but involves substantial effort to bring up my servers. Therefore, I will first try upgrading my Nvidia to say libnvidia-cfg1-440 and libnvidia-common-440 etc because these are the latest Nvidia packages as listed in my Synaptic app on Ubuntu 18.04? Does that make sense? I will back up my OS prior as I alway maintain a nightly backup of my OS via ZFS snapshots. [Bug 1890843] [NEW] Xorg freeze
Public bug reported: I am running Ubuntu 18.04 64 bit with Gnome III. Action to see bug: 1. double left mouse click on launcher icon on left toolbar (usually happens with Chromium Browser icon) 2. Desired result: Drop down menu appears with options to open Chromium browser 3. Actual result when bug appears: Drop down menu appears then whole desktop freezes. No further mouseclicks on display work. Dropdown menu remains frozen on display. 4. Current workaround: When bug appears, the desktop can be unfrozen via cntl-alt-del keys but the drop-down menu remains frozen in place. Next, the frozen drop-down menu can now be closed by clicking on the "Activities" menu on the upper-left corner of the desktop and then clicking on the icon with the frozen drop-down menu. These actions close the frozen drop-down menu and restore normal operation of the Gnome III for a while until the bug pops up again. This bug has become especially common now rendering the desktop almost unusable and I'm thinking of replacing Gnome III due to this. Public bug reported: I'm running Ubuntu 14.04 64Bit and Startup Disk Creator fails and freezes when copying files to the USB drive. Re: [Bug 1312358] Re: 14e4:4331 [MacBookPro10, 2] wifi intermittent Ubuntu 14.04
Hi Chris and team at Ubuntu, Thanks so much for helping me solve this. I'm amazed at the quick and professional response from you and the rest of the team. Try to get this level of support from Microsoft! So far, after about 5hrs of VNC/VPN connectivity through wifi on my MacBook, it appears rock solid! Hoping that someday it will run an n protocol wifi connection but I'm running g for now and quite happy. I think it's solved, but will let you know if another issue appears and I can't solve it. I'm very pleased so far with Ubuntu 14.04. Love the Macbook hardware but wanted to run Ubuntu, which I know. Thanks again, Phil On Sun, Apr 27, 2014 at 1:44 PM, Christopher M. [Bug 1312358] Re: 14e4:4331 [MacBookPro10, 2] wifi intermittent Ubuntu 14.04
I had used: sudo iwconfig wlan0 power on to turn on power management on my MacBook Pro Retina 13" laptop (Ubuntu 14.04) and the intermittent wifi problem appears to have gone away. The intermittent wifi problem was especially noticable due to my connecting my machines via vnc and telnet tunneled through an OpenVPN virtual LAN. When the wifi was intermittent, the telnet would hang at login (even when the wifi connection seemed to be otherwise working) and also the VNC connection would eventually stop, leaving a frozen VNC window on the client connecting to the MacBook Pro. The VNC connection would not recover, even if the wifi connection recovered. Therefore, both the telnet and VNC connections appeared to be sensitive measures of wifi connectivity. Since turning on the wifi power management, telnet and VNC appear to be stable! I did not yet experiment further to verify that the power management setting was truelly correlated to the intermittent wifi behavior but that is something I'll likely try soon. I will need to make the power management on permanent and I think instructions to do so are on the Web. Re: [Bug 1312358] Re: wifi intermittent on Macbook Pro Retina 10, 2 Ubuntu 14.04
Hi Joe, Thanks so much for getting back to me. Testing a new kernel might be a little problematic since this is sort of a production machine. However, I had already installed the OS numerous times this past week anyway and it wouldn't be a disaster if I had to do so again. I will try to see if there's a way I can back up the OS to an image so I can re-install it if things blow up. Maybe you have another suggestion? As another approach, is there a way to go back to the "old" i.e. production kernel if the new one merely suffers from non-killer but significant defects? Thanks again, Phil On Fri, Apr 25, 2014 at 7:11 PM, Joseph Salisbury < joseph.salisb...@canonical.com> wrote: > Would it be possible for you to test the latest upstream kernel? Re: [Bug 1186463] Re: cannot boot ubuntu 13.04 on retina 10, 2 black screen
Hi Ike, Thanks for responding. The problem apparently had resolved itself (or rather was likely resolved due to efforts on the Ubuntu development team) in that now, the bootup GUI is gone and I see text streaming by on boot up and the boot is now sucessful every time. I'm guessing that the boot graphics were the problem or related to it and the team chose to just remove these bootup graphics. Apparently, that solved the problem - thanks to them.
