[Bug 539365] Re: g++ programs compiled with -finstrument-functions freezes Ubuntu
Working with latest v3c and treedb with gcc version 4.8.2 (Ubuntu 4.8.2-19ubuntu1) in trusty. See also bug https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/gcc- defaults/+bug/692104 I couldn't reproduce the bug as the current compiler is more strict and compilation fails. Git has also changed so that you need to do a "git checkout $branch" before doing a "git reset --hard" to switch to a remote branch. Also, v3c versions before 2.5.8-01 (to be released shortly) assumed that the git repository isn't a clone, which is true in my case. Has anyone tried to reproduce this bug? ** Changed in: gcc-defaults (Ubuntu) Status: Incomplete => New -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/539365 Title: g++ programs compiled with -finstrument-functions freezes Ubuntu To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/gcc-defaults/+bug/539365/+subscriptions -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
[Bug 692104] Re: g++ generates bad code
Working with latest v3c and treedb with gcc version 4.8.2 (Ubuntu 4.8.2-19ubuntu1) in trusty. I got a link error with the original reproduce-bug.sh which might be due to - tool changes - the git versions used (the revised script uses the "master" branches - a bad "clean room" on my machine I'm guessing I couldn't save/upload a log as the problem crashed the machine. [Bug 692104] [NEW] g++ generates bad code
Public bug reported: I put together a script called reproduce-bug.sh that does all the work for you. This script doesn't require sudo or other enhanced proviledges to run. Basically you run the script in an empty directory writeable by you, and it will git clone v3c and treedb into their own folders and create a "sandbox" folder to install them to. Then it will "make && make install" the packages into the sandbox. You run it as sh reproduce-bug.sh treedb These packages aren't large and with a 1-2GHz machine with broadband you should get to the "problem" prompt in < 2 minutes. The problem stage is running "make check" in treedb, so there's a prompt asking you to -C to abort, enter to proceed. If you can reproduce the bug it will note the test failures for you to compare. Running the tests on Debian/Squeeze's gcc/g++ 4.4.5 succeeds, as it does with gcc/g++ 4.5.2 on ubuntu (I built it from source). This may lead to the cause of the following more serious problems: linux-image-2.6.32-5-amd64: kernel freeze http://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=607495 and system instability caused by unpriviledged program https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux/+bug/692100 ProblemType: Bug DistroRelease: Ubuntu 10.10 Package: g++ 4:4.4.4-1ubuntu2 ProcVersionSignature: Ubuntu 2.6.32-26.48-generic 2.6.32.24+drm33.11 Uname: Linux 2.6.32-26-generic x86_64 Architecture: amd64 Date: Sun Dec 19 03:23:14 2010 ProcEnviron: LANGUAGE= LANG=en_IE.utf8 SHELL=/bin/bash SourcePackage: gcc-defaults ** Affects: gcc-defaults (Ubuntu) Importance: Undecided Status: New ** Tags: amd64 apport-bug maverick -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/692104 Title: g++ generates bad code -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 692100] [NEW] system instability caused by unpriviledged program
Public bug reported: In Debian this problem manifests as a system freeze, but in Ubuntu it shows up as screen corruption. I reported it to Debian as linux-image-2.6.32-5-amd64: kernel freeze http://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=607495 I put together a script called reproduce-bug.sh that does all the work for you. This script doesn't require sudo or other enhanced proviledges to run. Basically you run the script in an empty directory writeable by you, and it will git clone v3c, treedb, meta-treedb and v3c-repo into their own folders and create a "sandbox" folder to install them to. Then it will "make && make install" the packages into the sandbox. These packages aren't large and with a 1-2GHz machine with broadband you should get to the "problem" prompt in < 5 minutes. The problem stage is running "make check" in v3c-repo, so there's a prompt asking you to -C to abort, enter to proceed. If you reproduced the problem then you will have to wait a few minutes while all available memory is consumed at which point the test program fails, after which your desktop has to be paged back in. I'm not even sure it's a stack overflow problem as debugging it with kdbg doesn't help. When the test ultimately finishes you will notice screen corruption on your desktop - I would recommend rebooting. [Bug 629953] [NEW] fan not active after sleep/hibernate
Public bug reported: I reported this bug on Debian - http://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=592750 I will close that bug when I test hibernate - sleep works with the latest Debian kernel version - 2.6.32-5-amd64. As Ubuntu is using a later version I conclude that this is a regression, although I didn't try this on Ubuntu before. Steps to reproduce: 1. Sleep (I used the shutdown plasma widget and selected sleep from the shutdown pop-up menu) 2. Resume Before sleeping I could hear the fan running (quietly). After resume the fan was off (I checked by running a CPU-intensive task) and the battery status plasma-widget shows a red "x" in a white circle. The touchpad also didn't circular-scroll as it did before sleep. I just heard the fan kick-in at full blast - I assume it's some sort of emergency function - it's not the ramped speed increase from idle that it usually has. [Bug 539365] Re: g++ programs compiled with -finstrument-functions freezes Ubuntu
Unfortunately the machine hangs without warning. Fortunately building and installing v3c and treedb from git is a snap. To reproduce the circumstances of the crash I think running the checks against v3c branch 1.3.12 is a good idea - it may not be a factor. Here is the complete procedure. # BEGIN mkdir tmp cd tmp git clone git://v3c.git.sourceforge.net/gitroot/v3c/v3c cd v3c make git branch=1.3.12 sudo make -C build/git/branches/1.3.12 prefix=/usr install cd .. git clone git://treedb.git.sourceforge.net/gitroot/treedb/treedb cd treedb make git branch=0.2.0 debug check # This is where the crash occurs! # END If you've managed to reproduce the crash then after you hard-reboot your machine you can uninstall v3c with cd sudo make -C build/git/branches/1.3.12 prefix=/usr uninstall The entire procedure will take about 5 minutes (assuming you have a fast internet connection). V3c has moved on since 1.3.12 so I can't recall, but you may have to manually remove the /usr/include/v3c directory after uninstalling v3c. [Bug 481704] [NEW] fatal error: invalid @ in skeleton: @output m4_fst
Public bug reported: Binary package hint: bison # lsb_release -rd Description:Ubuntu 9.10 Release:9.10 bison verson: 2.4.1 Yes I know that writing your own bison skeleton files is officially unsupported, but I think the approach I've taken is worth the effort. Regardless of whether or not it's supported, I believe this bug indicates a problem in bison 2.4.1 that isn't present in bison 2.3. Rather than spend a thousand words to help you recreate the problem, I've created a project in SourceForge that will save time. http://sourceforge.net/projects/cxxparse/ To build this you will also need http://sourceforge.net/projects/v3c/ as well as bison, flex and the packages detailed in v3c/README. You can either download the .tar.gz files or clone their GIT repositories. I (and now you) can build the Debian packages for v3c and then cxxparse by unpacking them, entering the same directory as their respective README files and running make debian You need to install the Debian / Ubuntu packages for v3c first by cd build && sudo dpkg -i *.deb Once done you are in a position to build the cxxparse package. The skeleton I've written generates another file containing a class that contains the lex token enumeration and the example in cxxparse/flexx/tests shows how this is used as a base class by the scanner - all very c++ and neat. Except it doesn't work on Ubuntu - hence this bug report. I'm pretty sure that it's because Ubuntu supplies bison 2.4.1 whereas Debian comes with bison 2.3. Ideally you could take my skeleton as "inspiration" for another bison skeleton, but if not then helping me solve this problem would be good too. What is expected to happen: built debian/ubuntu packages in the cxxparse build directory What happened instead: ../../../../v3c/flexx/tests/calc.ypp: fatal error: invalid @ in skeleton: @output m4_fst ** Affects: bison (Ubuntu) Importance: Undecided Status: New -- fatal error: invalid @ in skeleton: @output m4_fst https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/481704 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

I also added intel_agp agpgart bluetooth to /etc/modprobe.d/blacklist but $ grep agp /var/log/messages yields Kernel command line: root=UUID=6d6b2de2-f28f-48ac-ada3-1b03af84b628 ro splash vga=791 sched uler=cfq nolapic agp=off ... This needs a corresponding entry in /etc/X11/xorg.conf in the "screen" section Option "NvAGP" "1" to choose nVidia's own AGP controller. 5. As may already know, the kernel parameters also enable the framebuffer console. 6. When I log out of KDE, the desktop shuts down ok, but the screen goes into text mode with a non-blinking cursor at the top-left - no login screen. This is also what I see when I try to hibernate. After logging out with the "stalled" text-mode display, I can press the power-off button and ubuntu shuts down correctly, including a message stating that the KDE window manager was stopped. -- hibernate doesn't work on Dell Inspiron 8000 https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/253530 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

Public bug reported: Binary package hint: linux-image-2.6.24-19-generic lsb_release -d => Ubuntu 8.04.1 KDE 3.5.9 I've got the KDE 4 beta installed too although that shouldn't matter. I've got kpowersave installed as it allows me to configure KDE notifications as well as configuring button actions. I configured it to associate the "lid close" action with "suspend to disk". I've tried closing the lid - it activates the "lock desktop" and the screensaver - no hibernate. Just to be sure, I right-clicked on the kpowersave applet and clicked on the "suspend to disk" menu item - same result. I've got the nvidia-glx package installed, if that's relevant. [Bug 253445] [NEW] DMF560TX 10_100 Fast Ethernet+56K Fax_Modem (56K Fax_Modem) PC Card non-functional
Public bug reported: Binary package hint: linux-image-2.6.24-19-generic lsb_release -d Description:Ubuntu 8.04.1 I reported this to Fedora (I hope you don't hold that against me) with no luck. https://bugzilla.redhat.com/show_bug.cgi?id=250030 It has lots of relevant information. Basically I'm getting the same problem in Ubuntu. My built-in network controller connector has worn out - pins fell out / broke. Dell won't sell me the replacement component, only a new motherboard - this is a connector board mounted on the laptop plastic base connecting to a mini-pci device, nothing to do with the motherboard! [Bug 252415] Re: remake (and make) memory free() error
Modifying debian/rules by adding "--with-dmalloc" to the ./configure invokation and rebuilding provides an interim solution. The package would then require libdmalloc5 (5.5.1-1) in addition for installation. Should I report this against the "make" package as well ? I'll leave it to your judgement as only you will know if this is relevant to "upstream" - in your case, "make". -- remake (and make) memory free() error https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/252415 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 252462] [NEW] make: source build ignores debug in DEB_BUILD_OPTIONS
Public bug reported: Binary package hint: make After $ sudo apt-get build-dep make $ apt-get source make $ cd make-dfsg-3.81 $ DEB_BUILD_OPTIONS="debug nostrip noopt" logsave ../make-debug.log dpkg-buildpackage -uc -us -rfakeroot I noticed that the source files were being built with "-O2" instead of "-O0". A comparison with the "remake" package (which behaves as expected) revealed that the environment setting made by dpkg-buildpackage was being stepped on by debian/common/copt.mk I created a patch as per https://wiki.ubuntu.com/PackagingGuide/Howtos/PatchingWithoutPatchSystem?highlight=(CategoryPackagingGuide) and have tested it locally - debugging builds work as expected - please find the patch attached. Unfortunately make must first be converted to use dpatch before this patch can be incorporated into the distribution. "remake" uses dpatch and supplying a "dpatch" patch is all that's required with that package. ** Affects: make (Ubuntu) Importance: Undecided Status: New ** Tags: debug make source -- make: source build ignores debug in DEB_BUILD_OPTIONS https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/252462 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 252415] [NEW] remake (and make) memory free() error
Public bug reported: Binary package hint: remake lsb_release -d => Ubuntu 8.04.1 remake -v => GNU Make + Debugger 3.80+dbg-0.62 make : GNU Make 3.81 This is a strange one. The problem surfaces in make and remake depending on the project location, comments, etc., so I'm guessing that memory is being stepped on somewhere. Sometimes it's make that crashes, sometimes remake, sometimes both. At least it's reproducible so hopefully this little test-project will help you track it down. "make" builds the dummy program and "make clean" cleans up - nice and simple for testing. One applet that catches my eye when I log in is a green ball - the "Adept Notifier 2.1 Cruiser (Using KDE 3.5.9)". It seems to be able to add and remove itself from the KDE panel just fine. This is perfectly do-able. -- uninstalling KDE guidance power manager doesn't remove it from kicker https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/250396 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
[Bug 250382] Re: synaptic cannot to synaptic when a dialog is displayed
I'm pretty sure you're missing the point here. In kate I can select the File -> open menu to display the file open dialog. I can switch away from kate with and back again. As the file open dialog is modal, switching to kate results in switching to kate with it's modal dialog on top. I never indicated that I could (or would want to) switch to synaptic without also switching to it's modal dialog. The problem, to rephrase, is that I cannot switch to synaptic using when it is displaying a modal dialog. Not the main window, not the modal dialog. I'm not using compiz fusion so a simple list is displayed. You can see synaptic in the list, but skips over it! -- synaptic cannot to synaptic when a dialog is displayed https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/250382 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

Public bug reported: Binary package hint: uswsusp lsb_release -d => Ubuntu 8.04.1 KDE 3.5.9 In synaptic I selected uswsusp for installation. When I clicked on the "Apply" button the "Applying changes" dialog's terminal output window displays the following (please excuse me for any typos). Configuring uswsusp --- The swap file or partition that was found in uswsusp's configuration file is not active. In most cases this means userspace software suspend will not work for you and you will need to choose (or let uswsusp choose) another swap space. In some corner cases however, this can be what you want. Continue without a valid swap space? You can answer yes or no here the result is the same. As it turns out, the uswsusp configuration logic couldn't handle a device specified by UUID, but by the old /dev/sda5 way. [Bug 250386] [NEW] synaptic conflicts resolution not remembered when removing packages
Public bug reported: Binary package hint: synaptic lsb_release -d => Ubuntu 8.04.1 KDE 3.5.9 This bug relates to https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/synaptic/+bug/122064 [Wishlist] Removing software+dependencies in Synaptic is currently more difficult than installing them but goes one step further. When installing a package, conflicts may occur, requiring previously installed packages to be removed. In my case I was trying out splashy (for uswsusp) and it conflicted with kubuntu-artwork-usplash and usplash, requiring their removal. When I (eventually) found out it didn't offer a solution to me not being able to hibernate I removed it. It's purpose is unclear. Wishing to create a new filter, he enters the name "Automatic removable" in the text box, and clicks the "new" button. [Bug 250373] [NEW] Firefox selecting text in address bar off by one character
Public bug reported: Binary package hint: firefox lsb_release -d => Ubuntu 8.04.1 KDE 3.5.9 Firefox 3.0 If I'm entering a bug report (this problem may include any text entry field) on a web page and I wish to select part of the URL in the address bar, the selection can sometimes miss the last character. Steps to reproduce (I know this works) Create a bug report. Find another problem requiring another bug report. You wan t to select "https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/synaptic/+filebug"; from right to left, but already have the first two lines of this bug report selected. I've tried selecting the text with the mouse and keyboard, top to bottom and bottom to top - it happens 3 out of four times. Carefully position your mouse cursor at the end of the last character of the text you wish to select. If you leave the mouse at the end of the text you want to select after clicking the primary (in my case left) mouse button, the selection works as expected. If you click and drag without waiting, it misses the last character. Additional information: I don't have the fonts set so small that I could miss a "g". The problem is real. I'm pretty fast with a mouse, so you might think that I started moving the mouse before I clicked. If that were the case I would expect the selection to be wrong to varying degrees - not always one character. [Bug 250336] [NEW] synaptic doesn't know how to ask for root priviledges
Public bug reported: Binary package hint: synaptic KDE version 3.5.9 lsb_release -d => Ubuntu 8.04.1 Use case: Kate launches synaptic from the KDE menu and is prompted to enter her password by KdeSudo so it can run with root privileges. Kate logs out without closing synaptic. When she logs in again an untitled messages box states Starting without administrative privileges You will not be able to apply any any changes. But you can still export the marked changes or create a download script for them. After dutifully exporting the changes to ~/Desktop/changes.txt she finds that the file is empty. Things to fix: 1. If synaptic had extended privileges in the last session then it should be able to re-invoke itself through the same method it was invoked with before, in this case kdesu. 2. Does synaptic save the changes across sessions? 3. If there were no changes made then the user shouldn't be prompted( / able?) to save them. 4. [Bug 250327] [NEW] KDE runaway process catcher applet always reports programs with an empty name
Public bug reported: Binary package hint: kicker This bug relates to the runaway process catcher applet on KDE 3.5.9. lsb_release -rd prints: Description:Ubuntu 8.04.1 Release:8.04 The " y" below indicates that the dialog box had two choices - a "yes" button and a "no" button, and that I clicked on the "yes" button. Occasionally (e.g. after logging in) the KDE runaway process catcher reports: First dialog: A program called '' is slowing down the others on your machine. It may have a bug that is causing this, or it may just be busy. Would you like to try to stop the program? n Second dialog: In future, should busy programs called '' be ignored? y It doesn't matter how many times I answer this question about programs with an empty name (presumably on-the-fly scripts) - the runaway process catcher applet asks me every time. I looked in its configuration - an empty entry is there. Two other points: 1. There really should be one dialog with a radio button - stop? *yes *no. If the user selects "no" another radio button list is enabled asking ignore? *yes *no. This is just a quibble. 2. This problem is just a special case - it's just as annoying when the runaway process catcher applet asks me about "python" or "bash" - there's not enough context for it to work with, so maybe there should be a filter for these. ** Affects: kdebase (Ubuntu) Importance: Undecided Status: New -- KDE runaway process catcher applet always reports programs with an empty name https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/250327 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
