[Bug 1184451] Re: Ubuntu 13.10 random screen freeze while Normal OS activites
Update: I downgraded back to 13.04 and the problem vanished, thus confirming that one of the upgraded packages is causing it. However, I am still running the 3.11.0-7-generic kernel, so it's something else. One way to uncover the culprit would be to update to 13.10 incrementally just a few packages at a time and see which one brings back the freezes. I don't have much time these next few days but if somebody could try it, it would save all of us a lot of pain (really can't work like this). I will have a go at it next week. I don't see any other solution unless someone finally finds an error message in a log somewhere. -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1184451 Title: Ubuntu 13.10 random screen freeze while Normal OS activites To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/xorg-server/+bug/1184451/+subscriptions -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
[Bug 1184451] Re: Ubuntu 13.10 random screen freeze while Normal OS activites
Eh the freezes started occurring again, with the older kernel and very frequently too. I thought I was on to something. Oh well. Also I notice that after rebooting it takes a little while before the freezes start Maybe relevant info: KDE 4.11.1 Linux 3.11.0-7-generic x86_64 CPU0: Intel(R) Core(TM) i5 CPU M 560 @ 2.67GHz (fam: 06, model: 25, stepping: 05) Hybrid graphics (nVidia Optimus) -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1184451 Title: Ubuntu 13.10 random screen freeze while Normal OS activites To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/xorg-server/+bug/1184451/+subscriptions -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
[Bug 1184451] Re: Ubuntu 13.10 random screen freeze while Normal OS activites
Hi all. I too had these issues right after upgrading my system to 13.10. My experience mirrors that of Phill, with a few differences: * Sound output is sometimes interrupted in my audio player * Mouse still moves (clicks don't work) BUT it sometimes freezes as well * The problem occurs in a virtual console as well. Emacs freezes (I can't enter text) * No reboot required. But sometimes it takes a long time for the computer to unfreeze. * Ubuntu 13.10 64-bit (3.11.0-7-generic) Furthermore, contrary to saha's experience, there isn't any correlation between a freeze and cpu load for me. Also saha is running a 3.8.0-25-generic kernel and the freezes don't occurs with 3.8.0 for me (see end of my comment). I have a laptop with nvidia optimus (intel graphics + discrete nvidia card, however the intel card always drives the display even though the nvidia card might be the source). The problem occurs while using any of the 2 graphics adapters. However a bug in the intel driver could still be to blame, but very unlikely in my opinion. So I don't think this is a graphics issue. Now, I also have a 3.8.0-30-generic kernel, which I have been using for an hour now. No freezes yet. So I think this is a kernel bug. I think it unlikely to be a problem related to a combination kernel + gfx card because as I mentioned the problem occurs without X too. I will update my comment if a freeze occurs. I will try different kernels and see what happens and report back.
[Bug 568495] Re: Evince frequently replaces pi glyphs with not equal to and other substitutions.
To save some time, and as mentioned in bug #162111, this problem is fixed by installing wine-1.3 (available from the ppa) -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/568495 Title: Evince frequently replaces pi glyphs with not equal to and other substitutions. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
