[Bug 1426858] [NEW] Gstreamer crashes when playing any video with Totem, Firefox or Nautilus

2015-03-01 Thread Pierre van Male
Public bug reported:

For months, I have had crash reports (under Nautilus) or Totem or
Firefox crashing when accessing a video. This seems to be due to
Gstreamer. To be noted that I can watch Youtube video under Firefox, but
visiting some website makes the application crash (including the
ubuntu.bq.com one...).

if launched from the terminal, the error message is:

[Bug 1393612] Re: Protect against BadUSB device

2014-11-17 Thread Pierre van Male
@ Seth Arnold: Thanks for your comment. In the case of an USB device
acting as a keyboard and for multi-seat machines or remote servers, the
keyboard should simply not be activated (what for?). This security
measure can also be an option available in Security Privacy. I agree
that Ubuntu and GNU/Linux is used in many different configuration and
the solution proposed here is mostly for desktop use, but it still make
sense.

 I think I found a workaround: an init-script, that removes monitors.xml
and monitors.xml.backup on shutdown and reboot.

 Start Gedit as root.

 sudo gedit

 Copy the following lines

 #!/bin/sh
 rm /home/USERNAME/.config/monitors.xml
 rm /home/USERNAME/.config/monitors.xml.backup
 rm /var/lib/lightdm/.config/monitors.xml
 rm /var/lib/lightdm/.config/monitors.xml.backup
 exit 0

Exchange USERNAME with your own and save the script in /etc/init.d.
 File-name doesn't matter. I called it orientation.

After that make the script executable.

 sudo chmod +x /etc/init.d/orientation

And create a link to the script, so it gets executed on shutdown an reboot.

 sudo update-rc.d orientation start 1 0 6 .

[Bug 1316901] [NEW] Wrong screen rotation at login

2014-05-06 Thread Pierre van Male
Public bug reported:

Dear all,

I am experiencing a small, but annoying problem with the screen rotation
that seems to be a bug.

I am running Ubuntu (unity) 14.04 on an x220t (thinkpad convertible into
tablet). There is a rotation button on the screen that makes the screen
rotate 90º counter-clockwise (the showkey command return the number 154
when this button is pressed).

This was working from fresh install of Ubuntu (therefore not linked to
an additional package alike think-rotate). It does rotate the screen,
but not the touchscreen input (finger for example), which makes it
pretty useless (the install of the thinkpad-scripts package, ppa:martin-
ueding/stable, solved the issue of the screen rotation for me).

The problem is that this rotation button is not only useless, it results
with the screen having a wrong rotation at next login.

Following this thread: http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=2190452,
I realized that pressing the rotation button generate the creation of
the ~/.config/monitor.xml file. Then, before rebooting the computer, the
line 13 of this file indicates the current rotation (
rotationnormal/rotation. However, after reboot and login, the
rotation indicated in this file has been changed to the previous
position and result in the screen being wrongly rotated. For example, if
the rotation was normal, after reboot, it is right.

I have not yet figured out if this happen during the log off, the
shutting down, the booting or the login process.

The temporary solution is to delete this monitor.xml file (otherwise,
the screen is systematically rotated 90º clockwise after login.

Small addition: the monitor.xml file is modified during the login
process. I rebooted and logged in in a terminal before logging in with
the graphical interface and the line 13 in the monitor.xml file was
still on normal. Then I logged in with the graphical interface and the
line 13 was on right position.

[Bug 1091063] [NEW] Powertop does not display correctly

2012-12-16 Thread Pierre van Male
Public bug reported:

After installation, Powertop was working properly, but soon later, it
stopped displaying correctly in the terminal.

All the processes are displayed one after the other like this:
/lib/x86_64-linux-gnu/libnl-genl-3.so.200.5.2

7f70d157e000-7f70d157f000 rw-p 4000 08:01 13491

and the terminal stopped breaking the line: entering enter does not make
the prompt swith to a new line.

Since Powertop was working at first, I expect that I broke it with a
later operation. I made some modifications linked to power consumption
(including extra parameters for grub), but a priori, I do not see any
link.

See the attachement for better understanding...

Best regards,
Pierre

[Bug 1091063] Re: Powertop does not display correctly

2012-12-16 Thread Pierre van Male
If I am not mistaken, I made the following modifications to the system after
having installed and run powertop without problem:
1) added the following parameters to grub: pcie_aspm=force
i915.i915_enable_rc6=1 i915.lvds_downclock=1 i915.i915_enable_fbc=1
2) installed the following packages: tlp tlp-rdw tp-smapi-dkms smartmontools
ethtool

I removed them and restarted the system, but the problem persists.

I am attaching the html output of powertop that shows that powertop
works properly (but does not displays properly in the terminal).

[Bug 1009179] Re: Xorg crashes randomly and resumes to the login screen

2012-09-02 Thread Pierre van Male
The bug was put as incomplete by Timo with the following justification:
'incomplete' means I'm waiting for your test results :).

Since beginning of August, I am waiting for instructions regarding the
tests Timo wants me to perform. In my first post, I already posted the
apport report and I believe this bug is serious enough to be confirmed
as it affects a certified computer (the Lenovo T420) with a serious bug
(sudden log off).

** Changed in: xserver-xorg-video-intel (Ubuntu)

[Bug 1009179] Re: Xorg crashes randomly and resumes to the login screen

2012-08-17 Thread Pierre van Male
Hi,

Lately, the bug occurred after I had switched from another user and
without having suspended the computer. It may hence not be linked to the
suspend mode.

I am still waiting for instructions from Timo regarding the tests he
want me to perform...

[Bug 1009179] Re: Xorg crashes randomly and resumes to the login screen

2012-07-13 Thread Pierre van Male
Hi Timo,

I am coming back to you in regards to this bug. For the last weeks, the
crash occured only once or twice a week, but lately, it happens like 3
times a day and it is really annoying.

It seems to me that it happens usually shortly after a resume of the
machine.

I am still waiting for indications about the tests I am supposed to do.

Thanks in advance and best regards,
Pierre

[Bug 1009179] Re: Xorg crashes randomly and resumes to the login screen

2012-07-13 Thread Pierre van Male
Thanks Erwan for the reply.

Indeed, a bug report already existed for the bug affecting NVIDIA card
(https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/nvidia-graphics-
drivers/+bug/973096) and as explained in my first message, I am not
using NVIDIA card (as well as many other users affected by this
problem). This is why I opened this new bug report.

open the software manager, edit the sources, check that you have
precise-proposed enabled from the updates tab.

'incomplete' means I'm waiting for your test results :)

[Bug 1009179] [NEW] Xorg crashes randomly and resumes to the login screen

2012-06-05 Thread Pierre van Male
Public bug reported:

Xorg crashes randomly and resumes to the login screen. I found some
discussion linking this problem to the NVIDIA driver (http://forum
.ubuntu-fr.org/viewtopic.php?id=898971), but I am using open driver and
have no NVIDIA card... Other people in the same discussion have the same
problem than I have and some even moved away form Ubuntu for that
(losing work randomly is quite unacceptable).

I have the impression that the crash occurs more often after a resume
(following a suspend) and more in Ubuntu session than Ubuntu 2D.

I am ready to provide any further information, but I do not know which
one at this stage. Waiting for question.

Thanks,
Pierre
