[Bug 1924825] Re: After upgrading to 21.04, F12 no longer toggles Guake.

2021-05-11 Thread Rainer Rohde
This affects me as well, and it's rather frustrating. I guess we will
have to wait until there's a new Guake version out that will work with
Wayland by default.

[Bug 1592177] Re: Focus drops from search input in GtkFileChooserDialog after first character, which stops searching (broken behaviour)

2019-04-30 Thread Rainer Rohde
@Sebastien: This is only partially correct - when searching for
, hitting space in the search jumps to the fist
occurrence of , but what if you wanted another result? So
entering breaks the search.

The desired outcome would be that only would descend into the
directory after the correct search result was found.

If interrupts the search, the search is rather useless that way.

[Bug 1592177] Re: Focus drops from search input in GtkFileChooserDialog after first character, which stops searching (broken behaviour)

2019-04-10 Thread Rainer Rohde
Hi, I would like to be able to either add this new issue here found in
disco or create a new ticket for it, but I don't know what package to
file against.

Just like before, I opened Thunderbird to attach a file, and the file
picker comes up. I type the first few characters of my search (eg.
someone's firstname), and hit space to enter that person's lastname, but
as soon as I hit space the search stops and jumps into the folder of the
first person found. There is no way to continue searching after the
space.

So, does this fit here, or do I need a new ticket? If the latter, what
package?

Thanks.

PS: I've uploaded a new screencast (Screencast 2019-04-10 10:17:23.mp4)
to help visualize this new problem.

[Bug 1592177] Re: Focus drops from search input in GtkFileChooserDialog after first character, which stops searching (broken behaviour)

2019-03-25 Thread Rainer Rohde
Seems as if this was partially fixed in disco, but when searching for a
name with "firstname lastname", entering the space doesn't allow me to
continue to search, but jumps into the first folder when "firstname"
matches.

Desired result should be that entering a space allows me to continue to
search for "lastname", and only hitting Enter would enter the directory.

[Bug 1812523] Re: Gpaste copy buffer fills itself up with instances of a single copied image

2019-03-04 Thread Rainer Rohde
Here's a screencast that I took just now, since the issue is still
ongoing as of today.

I hope this screencast help visualize the severity of the issue, with
the copy buffer keeping on filling itself up over, and over, and over,
and over again with only 1x image that I copied.

After a little while, my laptop's fans go crazy due to the extra load
this imposes.

So, please can you provide some fix, or at least acknowledge the issue?

Thanks.

[Bug 1812523] [NEW] Gpaste copy buffer fills itself up with instances of a single copied image

2019-01-19 Thread Rainer Rohde
Public bug reported:

Gpaste - for some reason - keeps filling up the buffer with an image I
copy/pasted only once. This goes one forever it seems, and I only
noticed because my laptop's fans started to go wild. I could only stop
this after stopping and restarting the daemon, and of course, clearing
the history. I've seen this a few times before, and it only happens with
images.

However, since I started to use Flameshot to copy images (from the
built-in GNOME Screenshot tool), this happens almost every time.

I've attached a screenshot of the problem.

[Bug 1803176] [NEW] Search in Nautilus does not work correctly when called from other apps

2018-11-13 Thread Rainer Rohde
Public bug reported:

When Nautilus is called from another app, e.g., Thunderbird > Attach
File to email (or Gedit > Save file) the search (via the magnifying
glass icon in the top right) only allows for 1 character to be entered,
and then jumps to the bottom right and subsequent characters appear
there.

This behavior, of course, messes up the expected search results as the
search is split into two fields/areas of the panel.

In contrast, when opening up a Nautilus browser panel directly, any
search query entered from the magnifying glass icon stays in the text
entry area as expected, and the search results work well.

The expectation is that when another app calls Nautilus, the search
function works as if it does when working directly out of Nautilus.

[Bug 1630085] Re: Ubuntu 16.10 beta breaks Asus Laptop touchpad behavior

2016-10-24 Thread Rainer Rohde
Update: I guess I spoke too soon - the behavior is not fixed... I don't
get it while today it's back in full force. Didn't do anything
different. Guess I have to use an external mouse. :(

Thanks for the info! I agree with adding this to the Nautilus behavior
settings; such option is to useful to fall by the wayside; I use it all
the time!

[Bug 1630085] Re: Ubuntu 16.10 beta breaks Asus Laptop touchpad behavior

2016-10-20 Thread Rainer Rohde
Update: It seems as if the issue has solved itself - not sure if any
patch in the meantime did this or not, but for now, it seems as if the
touchpad behaves normally again.

I'll keep an eye on this and update as needed. Thanks!

Thank you for the workaround, Göran!

Will this be addressed officially so it'll work out of the box again,
too?

[Bug 1630085] Re: Ubuntu 16.10 beta breaks Asus Laptop touchpad behavior

2016-10-12 Thread Rainer Rohde
Just another observation - when my palm of the right hand touches the touchpad
while using the touchpad, the touchpad behavior seems normal; also, when I
place my left palm on the area to the left of the touchpad, the behavior seems
also normal.
However, as soon as I move my left hand away from the touchpad area, and I lift
my right palm from the laptop, with only my finger(s) touching the touchpad,
the behavior becomes erratic again.

So in a nutshell: It works when at least one palm touches the metal of
the area to the left or right of the touchpad; it does not work when
only a finger (or two) touches the touchpad itself.

Thoughts?

[Bug 1632273] Re: Thunderbird crash after update

2016-10-12 Thread Rainer Rohde
Yesterday's Ubuntu update did not fix this bug. It goes one step
further, however, and I can see the add-on check being done, and the
main window briefly appears, and then it crashes.

However, I was able to right-click on the Thunderbird icon, select
"Compose New Message", and this worked.

But alas, right now Thunderbird on Ubuntu is still very much broken.

[Bug 1631188] [NEW] Regression - moving file/folder icon over another folder icon no longer opens folder

2016-10-06 Thread Rainer Rohde
Public bug reported:

In Ubuntu 16.04< I was able to grab any file or folder icon, and then
drag it onto another folder icon (without letting go the mouse button),
and that folder would open up. I could repeat this until the desired
location has opened, and then let go of the mouse button and drop the
file there.

Now, with 16.10 (beta), this behavior is currently not available, which
is a huge inconvenience considering how awesome the default behavior in
16.04 was.

Hope this will get fixed asap. :)

Thanks.

[Bug 1561545] Re: Launcher leaves application name artifact on desktop

2016-08-09 Thread Rainer Rohde
Sorry for the late reply.

1) Well, I have another Ubuntu-based machine that does not have any
custom kernel parameters, and it does leave these artifacts every-now-
and-then as well.

2) And yes, I do remember seeing those artifacts in previous Ubuntu
versions, too, but simply assumed that would be fixed (which it
hasn't)...

Thanks.

[Bug 1568349] [NEW] nautilus crashed with SIGABRT in g_assertion_message()

2016-04-09 Thread Rainer Rohde
*** This bug is a duplicate of bug 1554884 ***
https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1554884

Public bug reported:

Nautilus just crashed after right-clicking on a folder, and then
selecting the "Move to..." option. After choosing the target folder, and
then clicking on "Select", it crashed.

This has happened a few times to me during various Ubuntu sessions, but
this is the first time that I reported it.

Thanks.

[Bug 1561545] [NEW] Launcher leaves application name artifact on desktop

2016-03-24 Thread Rainer Rohde
Public bug reported:

See attached info and attached screenshot.

moving the mouse away, often times there is a artifact of said
application name bubble left on the desktop.

[Bug 1318834] Re: Applications can no longer access your @gmail.com Online Account

2014-10-30 Thread Rainer Rohde
This issue still persists in 14.10.

Sometimes, the (re)authorization tool shows a full Google-themed screen
with username/password prompt, and sometimes (most of the times,
actually) only a simple two-liner without any theme that pertains to
Google. What should it be?

Frustrating issue, considering that all my Google Calendar data seems to
be not updating ...

[Bug 1383013] Re: Diodon on 14.10 does not clear history consistently

2014-10-28 Thread Rainer Rohde
Here's to confirm (and visualize) what I described earlier.

1) Log in after a reboot

2) History still there

3) Try to clear history - fails

4) Add new item to history - item is added, previous history is gone

See new screencast attached to help visualize this.

[Bug 1383013] Re: Diodon on 14.10 does not clear history consistently

2014-10-27 Thread Rainer Rohde
Okay, so I logged in just now after a reboot, and the Diodon history
did not initially clear. I then copied another line and that line was
added, and, at the same time, the previous history that survived the
reboot got deleted. Within the same session, I was able to delete all
history just fine.

It seems as if Diodon doesn't remove its history when the history is
kept when logging out and rebooting, and is still there after a reboot.
Could that be a clue?

For good measure, I added the current debug log as well.

[Bug 1383013] Re: Diodon on 14.10 does not clear history consistently

2014-10-20 Thread Rainer Rohde
Oliver,

since I started Diodon with G_MESSAGES_DEBUG=all diodon
diodon_debug.txt, I was no longer able to reproduce the bug.

However, I did a restart of the system, with Diodon launching
automatically at boot, and now the clipboard history can not be cleared.

So, could it be that Diodon is affected by being launched on startup vs.
manually launching it? And, in doing so, does it make a difference if it
is launched from Unity or the command-line?

I am going to stop Diodon now, and continue to work with it based on the
G_MESSAGES_DEBUG=all diodon  diodon_debug.txt launch approach.

[Bug 1383013] [NEW] Diodon on 14.10 does not clear history consistently

2014-10-19 Thread Rainer Rohde
Public bug reported:

This seems to be hit-and-and miss: Sometimes, when I first log in and
want to clear the Diodon history, it clears the history just fine; then,
while still being logged in, I want to clean the Diodon history that I
have accrued during that session, and nothing happens and the history is
not cleared.

I cannot pinpoint as to what causes this behavior, but ultimately,
Diodon does not clear out its history consistently.

Current workaround: quit Diodon, and launch it again, and then clear the
history. This works all the time.

Note: I have Diodon added to the session applications that should
automatically start when logging in.

[Bug 1328561] [NEW] Unity Launcher doesn't hide after coming out of lock-screen

2014-06-10 Thread Rainer Rohde
Public bug reported:

Folks,

I have set my Unity Launcher to auto hide from the System Settings
Appearance Behavior tab. This works perfectly fine, until I lock the
screen and come back to unlock it.

After unlocking the screen, the Unity Launcher will no longer auto hide.
The current workaround is to hold the Super key until the Keyboard
Shortcuts helper pops up, and then let go of it. This resumes auto hide.

Needless to say, locking the screen should not disable auto hide, but
should return the functionality that I had before locking the screen.

As a side effect of auto hide not working after unlocking the screen,
maximised windows do not line up with the Unity Launcher and the window
controls on the top left are partially covered. So even though auto hide
doesn't work and the Launcher stays visible, the borders are not
recognized the same as when auto hide would be turned off in the System
Settings.

[Bug 676166] Re: Unity Launcher corruption when resuming from suspend/hibernate

2014-03-11 Thread Rainer Rohde
I can confirm this issue still persisting on Trusty, after all these years.
FYI - I usually hide my Launcher; coming out of suspend shows a garbled mess
where the launcher normally would be. See screenshot attached.

[Bug 1046088] Re: No Brightness Control on ASUS G75VW Notbook (304.43)

2013-11-19 Thread Rainer Rohde
@Christopher: I ended up giving the G75 to my wife, and I got a System76
Bonobo Extreme, pre-installed with Ubuntu. Everything works as it should
on that puppy. :)

[Bug 974480] Re: Notification area whitelist is obsolete

2013-10-22 Thread Rainer Rohde
Skype no longer shows up in the indicator in 13.10, fresh install.
Needless to say, Skype is actively running, I just can't get to it to
control it without indicator...

[Bug 1078512] Re: Regression -- Some applications icons in Unity Dash are displayed too large

2013-10-19 Thread Rainer Rohde
I am wondering why Unity doesn't have the ability to scale icons into
the required size, rather than relying on the icon size provided by
those who design them.

Somewhat unrelated, I was also wondering to what happened to the old
idea that low quality icons should be replaced by the system
automatically by some sort of generic application icon?

[Bug 1241768] [NEW] Applications on the 2nd monitor cannot be accessed

2013-10-18 Thread Rainer Rohde
Public bug reported:

This seems to be a regression, as I haven't had that issue before.

When dragging an application window to the 2nd monitor, that application
window can no longer be accessed using the mouse. Clicking on it doesn't
do anything. Trying to drag it by clicking and holding the mouse on the
titlebar, doesn't do anything either.

Only workaround I found - unplug the 2nd monitor so the application is
moved to the primary screen for it to be accessible again.

This is new to me, and hasn't occured until I got a new laptop with a
Thunderbolt port from which I drive the 2nd monitor. Before, I used a
VGA cable to drive the other screen, and everything was fine.

[Bug 1224218] Re: [ASUSTeK COMPUTER INC. G75VW] hibernate/resume failure [non-free: nvidia]

2013-09-12 Thread Rainer Rohde
@Joseph,

this is not a kernel issue, however, a plymouth vs uswsusp.

This seems to be a known issue, and the question is why can't this be
fixed by Canonical?

Here's the note I have:

Aha! I figured it out -- I'd worked around this in the previous release
but forgotten about it. It's a bad interaction between uswsusp and
plymouth. So this is basically a duplicate of #816859, which has an
easy workaround, which makes me wonder why Ubuntu maintainers can't take
the trouble of adding a two-line fix to /usr/share/initramfs-
tools/scripts/local-premount/uswsusp.

The workaround:

patch EOF uswsusp
--- uswsusp.orig
+++ uswsusp
@@ -34,4 +34,6 @@
  mknod /dev/snapshot c ${DEV%:*} ${DEV#*:}

[Bug 1213259] Re: Regression - Several ACPI calls no longer work on ASUS G75VW

2013-08-21 Thread Rainer Rohde
That sounds like a good idea, Christopher.

Regarding Problem #1, I do remember that this was working just fine in 12.10.
Once I stepped up to 13.04, this functionality was lost. But along the way I
might have stepped up the BIOS version, too. I think I remember that I bought
the ASUS G75VW with the 210 BIOS revision, and stepped up to 221 right away. I
can't tell you whether that feature got lost due to the BIOS or due to any
Ubuntu kernel.
I guess the fact that it still works on Saucy when using the 210 BIOS is
reassuring that it might not be a kernel issue...

[Bug 841409] Re: GEdit is the only choice as Calendar application in Default Applications dialog

2013-08-21 Thread Rainer Rohde
@Thomas --

of course this is just a pseudo fix, as it doesn't integrate Thunderbird
into the Unity Panel and its Calendar Indicator. That means, I can't see
any of my events from the indicator, nor can I click on Add Event...
from the Calendar Indicator and hope that Thunderbird launches from
there... ;)

I really hope that there will be a real calendar that integrates with
Ubuntu and the indicator well enough, and lets the user pick what
backend the want their calendar data to be displayed from.

2013-08-19 Thread Rainer Rohde
Another thing I tried out of curiosity -- I downgraded the BIOS to ver
210.

Results: Fn+F2 (toggle wifi) came back to life, however, no other
function returned to operations.

It seemed as if Fn+F5/F6 felt smoother, more fine-grained, however, the
actual screen brightness function still didn't work.

I've since returned the laptop to BIOS ver 223.

[Bug 1213259] Re: Regression - Several ACPI calls no longer work on ASUS G75VW

2013-08-17 Thread Rainer Rohde
@Christopher --

I already tried that, with my current kernel parameters looking like
this: GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT=quiet splash resume=/swapfile.swap

The only thing that changes is that I am now getting an indicator for
the screen brightness, however, the actual screen brightness does not
change with it. In fact, when looking at System Settings Brightness
Lock, the Brightness slider is there, but it does not work whatsoever.

PS: Aforementioned keyboard backlight does seem to work with kernel
release 3.11.0-2-generic, which is an improvement.

[Bug 1213259] Re: Regression - Several ACPI calls no longer work on ASUS G75VW

2013-08-17 Thread Rainer Rohde
Forgot to mention that pretty much everything Fn key related worked back
in 12.10, with the exception of the screen brightness, which -- oddly
enough -- required going into suspend, and coming out of suspend, before
the screen brightness would work.

Starting with 13.04 and now 13.10, I pretty much lost all the other Fn
functions as listed in my initial post, as well as the functionality of
the power button triggering a shutdown dialog.

[Bug 1213259] [NEW] Regression - Several ACPI calls no longer work on ASUS G75VW

2013-08-16 Thread Rainer Rohde
Public bug reported:

Folks,

I am currently on kernel version 3.11.0-2-generic, and the following
(what I assume are) ACPI calls no longer work via Fn keys:

Fn+F2 = Toggle wifi on/off (works manually from the Network Indicator)
Fn+F5/F6 = Adjust screen brightness (doesn't work at all, not even from the
System Settings)
Fn+F9 = Toggle mousepad on/off (works manually from the System Settings)

Up until 3.11.0-1-generic, my Fn+F3/F4 = Adjust keyboard backlight
didn't work, either. This might be fixed in 3.11.0-2-generic, but I
need to verify this.

My /etc/default/grub entry for GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT reads quiet
splash acpi_osi=Linux acpi_backlight=vendor resume=/swapfile.swap --
not sure if that makes a difference towards the ACPI calls...

2013-08-09 Thread Rainer Rohde
Joseph - on another note (since I am able to interface with you here in
this thread): How do I go about reporting regressions with ACPI related
calls? With Saucy, I've lost pretty much all of my Fn key functions for
my ASUS G75VW laptop, including --

Fn+F2 = Toggle wifi on/off
Fn+F3/F4 = Toggle keybord backlight on/off
Fn+F4/F5 = Toggle screen brightness level
Fn+F9 = Toggle touchpad on/off

Any pointers as to what to file these against? Not trying to hijack
this topic here... ;)

[Bug 1196650] [NEW] Date-time indicator moved to the left after update

2013-07-01 Thread Rainer Rohde
Public bug reported:

After a recent update, the date-time indicator has moved to the left of
all the other indicators. Please see screenshot attached.

I assume that this is a glitch, as the indicator used to be on the
right, just left of the Cog that shows the system settings, etc.

Thanks.
