[Bug 1968929] Re: Missing Wayland login option on NVIDIA systems

2022-05-03 Thread Ralph Schmieder
funny enough, I have the opposite issue, 22.04 w/ gdm3 42.0-1ubuntu7
installed and Nvidia 510 driver. Hardware is a Dell XPS 15 9510 w/
GeForce RTX 3050 Ti Laptop GPU.

When selecting the Nvidia "On-Demand" profile, I get both, Wayland and
X11 in GDM. However, when I select "Performance Mode", X11 stops from
working, it's not offered in the gear menu anymore. What's worse, even
if I disable Wayland in /etc/gdm3/custom.conf, it seems like the X
server simply crashes:

May 03 10:49:44 delle systemd[1]: Started GNOME Display Manager.

Is this a separate / known issue?

On a related, and possibly connected, note, I'm hearing reports that
nxagent(1)'s 'FONTS' section, near the end of the man page, says 'The
default font path is __default_font_path__ .' as if some build process
failed to replace the marker string.

[Bug 1871268] Re: Installation fails due to useless immediate configuration error when "Install Third-Party Drivers" is selected

2021-01-29 Thread Ralph Houston
Very superficial report, but methodical.
Installed and booted OK this time, from install as similar as possible to
process that encountered bug.
Differences:
1. Installed from livedisk Ubuntu still running after install failure, rather
than direct from boot.
2. Did not create partitions, but reformatted (same) destination.
3. Did not ask for proprietary third party drivers.
So suspect the issuse is indeed in the the drivers and probably the NVidia one,
from past experience.

2020-12-01 Thread Ralph Taylor
I didn't have an efi partition setup. I've got a legacy BIOS (9 years
old), and my previous partition layout with a fresh install of 20.04 was
just /, /home and swap, where originally I just went to reformat /

I went through the installer again and created a 200Mb efi partition and
all was fine.

Is there not a way to detect legacy BIOSes?

Further to this. A reboot of the system first took me to rescue mode. I
exited from this and the system has booted to 20.10

Although I selected to install updates during the os installer they
appeared after this first boot. I now have a message about continuing to

[Bug 1848771] Re: Reboot after resume from suspend (deep)

2020-01-09 Thread Ralph
Workaround data point: On Acer C720P, using linux-oem kernel
(4.15.0-1065-oem) suspend works fine. Using 5.3.0-nn causes instant
boot on wake after suspend. I've not tried 5.0.0.

I'm pinning 4.15 for now but would love to run current.

When it fails the log stops after "PM: suspend entry (deep)". Now that
it works, here's what's in the logs at that point:

Jan 9 15:08:54 systemd-sleep[3361]: Suspending system...
Jan 9 15:08:54 kernel: [ 434.199460] PM: suspend entry (deep)
Jan 9 15:08:54 kernel: [ 434.199464] PM: Syncing filesystems ...
Jan 9 15:08:54 kernel: [ 434.217766] ehci-pci :00:1d.0: port 2 resume
error -19
Jan 9 15:16:53 kernel: [ 434.246721] done.

etc.

Somewhere between "suspend entry" and "Syncing filesystems" the suspend
appears to be breaking.

[Bug 1858040] [NEW] Kubuntu 19.10 installer selects wrong disk for grub when installed to 2nd disk

2020-01-01 Thread Ralph Scharpf
Public bug reported:

The system has a HDD (sda) for data and a SSD (sdb) for system. In BIOS,
SSD is given as first disk but this is not recognized by kernel. The
system has a legacy BIOS, no EFI.

At the installation all the options have been activated (full
installation with updates and HW drivers). The installation was
requested to use entire SSD (sdb) without LVM.

When installation is finalizing, an error pops up that installation of
grub to /dev/sda failed. Installation was requested to be done to
/dev/sdb, so it is likely that some grub install parameter was wrong.

I unplugged SATA cable of HDD to let SSD be /dev/sda and installation
was successful.

[Bug 1839346] Re: proot fails with signal 11 due to seccomp bug

Hey Lucas,

This seems to work on the Debian package, so I think we should look at
their patches to see if we can upstream it to Ubuntu as well.

[Bug 1819977] Re: razor2 had unknown error during get_server_info

2019-03-22 Thread Ralph Corderoy
Hi Christian, DNS resolved the domainname to one of three IP addresses
and the server listening on one of those developed a fault leading to
the client reporting the error, but in an unclear manner. The server
owners were alerted thanks to nyet and fixed their server's problem.
Thus the software does snot need to change. However, when it occurs
again we'll be milling around for a while not understanding the cause
because of the poor diagnostic so that could be improved, e.g. including
the IP address contacted so we realise it's always the same one. The
software could also improve by trying each of the IP addresses in a
random order.

Hi nyet, You state this all as fact, but give no references to the
source of the information, nor say why you'd know, e.g. an employee of
Cloudmark. And what you say is incorrect because 'Razor servers' are
not dead, some are still alive.

/etc/cron.d/amavisd-new has

The razor errors occur here every time sa-clean runs,

[Bug 1819977] Re: razor2 had unknown error during get_server_info

2019-03-15 Thread Ralph Corderoy
A DNS lookup of discovery.razor.cloudmark.com occurs. Here, that gives
three A records: 208.83.137.118, 208.83.139.205, and 208.83.137.117.
When the ..205 is connected, the initial read(2) of 'sn=D...', write(2)
of 'a=g...', triggers a read() of 'err=240\r\n'. connect() to ..117 and
that error doesn't occur. Thus there's something wrong with at least
one of the remote servers and it's pot luck what DNS entry is used.

[Bug 1539689] Re: package lvm2 2.02.133-1ubuntu4 failed to install/upgrade: subprocess installed post-installation script returned error exit status 1

2019-03-06 Thread Ralph Corderoy
I'm running do-release-upgrade on 14.04 to get to 16.04.
This is one of the errors that appears.
E: Version ‘2.02.133-1ubuntu10’ for ‘libdevmapper1.02.1’ was not found
https://packages.ubuntu.com/xenial/libdevmapper1.02.1 suggests
libdevmapper1.02.1 (2:1.02.110-1ubuntu10) is available with the source
package being lvm2_2.02.133-1ubuntu10.

Why is 2.02.133 being referenced when 1.02.110 is what's available?
Also, this bug is of 'critical' importance but has seen no action since 2016.
:-(

[Bug 788596] Re: xclock's reverseVideo draws black on black

2018-12-28 Thread Ralph Corderoy
Hi Chris, that's not what I'm seeing. Please describe what it is you
are seeing working normally, and confirm you've no .Xresources, etc.,
implicitly in play. I see xclock(1) now describes hourColor, etc., and
says that reverseVideo, AKA -rv, affects their defaults.

[Bug 225361] Re: .gvfs can't be stat'd by root causing backup tools to fail

2018-11-08 Thread Ralph Corderoy
It doesn't matter where you move the directory to, if it can't be
stat(2)'d then it's a POSIX violation and breaks programs. The example
of a user running rsync on their home directory doesn't mean that's the
only situation that should work.

[Bug 1487941] Re: remote listener disabled, no indication in man page, config file or start-up logs

This is absurd:
https://git.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/audit/commit/debian/rules?id=58c052d846f1ffd6575c04a373cd1e7f157cb3f8

auditd doesn't listen unless you configure it to listen. Why would
Ubuntu build the package with listening support completely disabled?
Nobody else does this. There's no reason for this. Highly annoying.

[Bug 719112] Re: Alternate install to non-primary drive results in grub MBR error

2018-06-19 Thread Ralph
I think there's a misunderstanding. After telling the installer to
install on /dev/sdb (and make it bootable), it asks "Can I install grub
on boot drive?" (or words to that effect) with no further details. If
you say "Yes", it installs onto /dev/sda. Not the drive you just
installed on and made bootable.

There is no hint to the user that the way around this is going back a
screen to do a semi-automatic grub install to the desired partition.

If this is working as intended, feel free to keep this closed. Perhaps
a note can be made in the documentation.

What fixed it for me was explicitly setting git's http.proxyAuthMethod

If you run your git commands with environment variable

failing.

[Bug 1010421] Re: Text antialiasing is green.....

2017-08-22 Thread Ralph Corderoy
It seems odd gimp doesn't override the system and user's configuration
of the rgba attribute to none, e.g. by providing a
/etc/gimp/2.0/fonts.conf, e.g.
https://gist.github.com/csaez/5d8286b134266e51c6cb76fd218d1d5d

If they think that a user might want to produce a PNG with rgba set for
a particular sub-pixel layout then they could have a UI choice on the
text-tool's options, just as they currently have anti-alias to override
the system and user.

Re: [Bug 1681870] Re: indicator-datetime-service crashed with SIGABRT in __malloc_assert()

2017-06-05 Thread Ralph Gilbert
Antonio,
Thank you for your report saying the bug was fixed...
I must report I've had a few problems that I have reported.Like "system
setting" wont open from the "gear" in the corner, and I lost the Ubuntu Software
center from the launch pad andothers... However in searching for possible
answers I found these 2 commands in one answer:
Sudo apt-get update && apt-get dist-upgrade, andSudo do-release upgrade -d
Running these 2 solved all my known problems. What they didI'm still not sure -
maybe a total re-install I'm not sure. I'm trying to learn...
Again thanks.

[Bug 1689945] [NEW] I have reported issues running 17.04

2017-05-10 Thread Ralph Gilbert
Public bug reported:

1. Right now from the "gear" in the upper right corner I cannot
open System Settings and About this computer. However Help
Suspend, Lock and Shut Down all seem to work. This problem
started after applying a recent update a few days ago.

2. I have tried to report what happens at PC Shut Down. I see
5 [FAILED] Stopped (with error)... messages. I don't know
if these shut down errors matter while the PC is running.
   They read as follows:

   .../dev/disk/by-id/dm-name-cryptswap1.
   .../dev/dm-0.
   .../sys/devices/virtual/block/dm-0.
   .../dev/disk/by-uuid/fb03698d9-7980-4eb4-90e8-673c146fdd30.
   .../dev/disk/by-id/dm-uuid-CRYPT-PLAIN-cryptswap1.

I tried to capture the above lines by cellphone photo.

2017-05-05 Thread Ralph Gilbert
Gunnar I had NO choice when opening this bug, it only
showed and accepted ubuntu-docs. I am not happy with
you reply, your action does nothing to improve product
quality. Instead of just closing this bug - a real bug,
maybe you could do something more productive like changing
it to a more suitable category?

[Bug 1688330] [NEW] 17.04 update causes failure to open "System Settings..."

2017-05-04 Thread Ralph Gilbert
Public bug reported:

Running 17.04 the Software Updated says the SW is up-to-date.
As far as I can tell, the last SW update caused this problem.
Using the "gear icon" in the upper right corner I cannot
open "system settings..." or open About this computer.
I can select help or "shut down..."

[Bug 1681120] [NEW] 17.04, cannot set date time to appear in title bar

2017-04-08 Thread Ralph Gilbert
Public bug reported:

Updated Ubuntu 16.10 to 17.04 (i386) and initially everything seemed to be ok.
Time only was displayed in title bar after some updates it no longer appears.
The tab in system settings for date/time shows time as selected but it is all
"grayed out" and I cannot change anything. I see older version bug reports for
this and have tried a few "get apt- whatever" to reinstall but nothing helped.

I do not know if this is "self-inflicted" because of something I may have done.
Is there a way I can reinstall 17.04?

Thanks

[Bug 1445549] Re: systemctl start mysql.service starts mariadb but reports failure

2017-02-13 Thread Ralph Corderoy
I find systemd loses track of starting mariadb-server-10.0 because
/etc/mysql/debian-start fails because 'root'@'localhost' needs to have a
password set for legacy code. There used to be a `debian-sys-maint'
user and /etc/mysql/debian.cnf could be changed to run as that user
instead of root, but that user no longer exists.

Grabbing an existing user@host combination and mandating the access
method used is a bit of a cheek. A new user can't clash; can we have
debian-sys-maint back?

I ended up leaving user as root in /etc/mysql/debian.cnf and putting the
needed password in there. Then /etc/mysql/debian-start succeeds and
`systemctl status mysql' correctly tracks it's "active (running)".

[Bug 1515425] Re: natural scrolling (reverse scroll direction) not working in mousepad

2016-08-15 Thread Ralph Williamson
I see this issue. Running native (not a VM) on a Dell laptop Latitude
E64XX,. Natural scroll does not happen in Mousepad, but seems to work
fine everywhere else (that I have noticed). This is using a USB mouse. I
have yet to get touchpad working at all, so not sure about that device.

Public bug reported:

I use bacula since more than 5 years. I have a lot of experiences with
it. After a complete new installation of my server with Ubuntu Server

gave the result

The latest v4.6-rc4-wily kernel (http://kernel.ubuntu.com/~kernel-
ppa/mainline/v4.6-rc4-wily/) fixed the issue for me. Now my laptop
suspends, resumes and reboots without an issue again.

[Bug 1301623] Re: unity freezes when moving windows among workspaces

2016-03-16 Thread Ralph Baker Kearfott
*** This bug is a duplicate of bug 815996 ***
https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/815996

Yes, it affects me, too, on various machines with different architectures. It
appears it happens when I
try to drag a window from one workspace to another using the mouse, but not
when I use the menu
(e.g. it doesn't seem to happen when I right-click the top of the window, then
choose
"move to workspace number ...").

Once, when my screen froze and I logged in from another machine through ssh, I
noticed "compiz"
was using a large amount of CPU, as if it were in an infinite loop.

[Bug 18574] Re: /etc/environment lacks man page.

Also, given a file /etc/foo then one would expect foo to be the name of
the man page; not bar. Thus environment(5), not environ(7).

[Bug 18574] Re: /etc/environment lacks man page.

2016-02-17 Thread Ralph Corderoy
No, environ(7) documents the "char **environ" symbol that program can
expect to find and that contain environment variables. That's not
connected to environment(5) that describes a file format for a file that
contains environment variables, e.g. are comments allowed. Other
problems stated by this bug would also not be fixed by saying environ(7)
is the solution, e.g. is /etc/environment owned by a package yet.

Can someone with the rights please set this back Triaged.

[Bug 1326954] Re: Sierra Wireless EM7305 (Fujitsu Lifebook S904) does not work after suspend/hibernate

2015-11-01 Thread Ralph
proposed fix, works well for me.

whats happening here? forcing device into qmi mode.

source:
http://www.0xf8.org/2015/07/dell-wireless-5809e-support-in-linux-a-followup/
had to modify his rules for the original device

create udev rules with pasted content. comment in first line is the filename.
http://pastebin.com/57r5QJ7A

delete existing mobile broadband profiles for device -> cold reboot -> recreate
profile -> have fun
(after suspending, for sure device still needs time for finding signal)

regards
ralph

[Bug 740506]

It's vital to put thought into "naming things" before a poor decision
becomes permanent because it becomes public. At the very least, "-c"
suggests check and "-C" would often be the negative don't check, even if
no -c option exists because it's the default.

And then there's the issue Adrian raises.

[Bug 1503611] Re: systemd: spamassassin not starting after upgrading to 15.04

2015-10-11 Thread Ralph Corderoy
After 14.10 to 15.04 upgrade, with amavis so spamassassin is installed,
but spamd shouldn't be running IIRC, root is receiving /etc/cron.daily
output.

/etc/cron.daily/spamassassin:
Job for spamassassin.service invalid.
invoke-rc.d: initscript spamassassin, action "reload" failed.

Here, I've

$ grep '^[^#]' /etc/default/spamassassin
ENABLED=0
OPTIONS="--create-prefs --max-children 5 --helper-home-dir"
PIDFILE="/var/run/spamd.pid"
CRON=1
$

https://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=774380 looks related.

   Status: New => Confirmed
