[Bug 1872053] Re: Local mail is never checked
I'm just piping in here to say that the issue is based on how the login(1) program is called during the authorization process. This is beyond the scope of gui terminals and is even once more removed from the shell. I've outlined a more in depth answer here: https://askubuntu.com/a/1278257/879293 Also, I've provided a bash function that you can add to your .profile (assuming you use 'login shell' for your terminals) that will give you something like the behavior that you (and me as well) were seeking relative to this thread. [Bug 1153488] Re: Treats bluetooth input device batteries as batteries
I don't know if Shih-Yuan Lee (fourdollars) his patch is used but there is clearly a bug in the code!! If you get to see at the following lines: if (g_ascii_strcasecmp (device_type, mains) == 0) { type = UP_DEVICE_KIND_LINE_POWER; } else if (g_ascii_strcasecmp (device_type, battery) == 0) { type = UP_DEVICE_KIND_BATTERY; /* Detect if the battery comes from bluetooth keyboard or mouse. */ if (g_strstr_len (native_path, -1, bluetooth) != NULL) { The code should be changed so it should also look for a bluetooth mouse when type = UP_DEVICE_KIND_LINE_POWER; So when you use a desktop pc without battery but with a bluetooth mouse so it shows the correct icon. [Bug 575834] Re: /etc/default/grub: line 9: splash: command not found
Yes, the problem was caused by bad quotation marks by pasting commands into it, following a procedure that was outlined at: http://www.ubuntugeek.com/known-ubuntu-10-04lucid-lynx-issuesbugs-with- workarounds.html I was following the procedure that follows: Problem The logo looks fine when you install Ubuntu, but, after you install the proprietary Nvidia and ATI video drivers, Doing a simple cut/paste of the commands pasted quotation marks that apparently unrecognizable by the machine. Once I had replace the pasted marks by typing quotation marks, I then ran update-grub and re-booted, but still didn't have 2.6.32-22 available to me. The newest kernel was still 2.6.31-20 I went to: http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=1195275 and tried: grub-mkconfig -o /boot/grub/grub.cfg after reading this: To update the GRUB 2 menu, the command sudo update-grub will be used throughout this guide. update-grub actually runs the command grub- mkconfig -o /boot/grub/grub.cfg This runs several scripts and incorporates the results into /boot/grub/grub.cfg which detemines what is seen on the screen during boot. Since the GRUB 2 developers do not intend to remove the update-grub 'stub', it will be used for simplicity and ease of use. The grub.cfg file was successfully updated, and when I re-booted, I had the 2.6.32-22 kernel available to me. Hi Joshua, Thanks for getting back to us. I just wanted to respond and clarify i don't think this affects Karmic. The only mention of Karmic was myself, having installed an instance of the guest running under Karmic for testing to eliminate whether it was an OS specific issue with respect to the host. [Bug 548891] Re: keyboard input broken at gnome login prompt after package updates
After a little more research and VM building, this is what i find. I can reproduce this problem with Ubuntu as guest on the following operating systems. Ubuntu Karmic 64-bit Mac OSX Snow Leopard Windows XP Windows 7 VMWare ESXi 4.0 For the most part, the problem is identical. Everything works with Lucid Beta 1 as the guest, up until applying updates after that i can no longer log in with the same symptoms as previously reported on all of them, with the exception of Karmic. Karmic does not work from the get go, if i do a basic install of Lucid running on a Karmic host, the keyboard works but is mapped to the wrong keys and i have to use the onscreen keyboard to login. No matter what option i choose in under keyboard preferences after loggin in i cannot get the keyboard to map properly. After applying the updates to Lucid on the Karmic host it then mirrors the problems experienced with all the other hosts. The keyboard flat out does not work anymore. Now the one thing i have noticed is that Lucid does not seem to pickup its keyboard mappings correctly for any of my hosts, when i say that, i mean it defaults to USA/USA as language and keyboard layout even though i have set it to use UK/UK as the language and keyboard layout. I am assuming the reason some of us can work and some can't is because those that can are using a USA/USA layout. Again, i am happy to test anything on any of the VM's i have should anyone wish to get to the bottom of this problem. I am not sure the onscreen keyboard problem is necessarily exactly the bug listed above, as that was submitted in Feb and even though nothing has been resolved with it, Beta 1 shipped after that and the onscreen keyboard works in that release. Subsequent updates seem to have broken that again so i am sure its just a variation of it. I have experience exactly that bug but on a physical machine running Lucid and not in a VM. -- keyboard input broken at gnome login prompt after package updates https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/548891 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
[Bug 548891] Re: keyboard input broken at gnome login prompt after package updates
This is definitely a problem with the guest not detecting the keyboard mappings or saving them. For some reason it insists on using American layout settings even if i log in an apply them system wide. The only way i can use my machine at this point in time is to set it to AutoLogin and then i am fine but everytime i log in the first thing i have to do is change the keyboard layout. -- keyboard input broken at gnome login prompt after package updates https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/548891 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 548891] Re: keyboard input broken due to invalid SKIP keyboard model
Hi Martin, I think you are right in that the problem with the SKIP option appearing is as a result of something that is happening in the install process. I think it is most likely something to do with the way that VMWare answers, or doesn't, the questions presented to it in the automated easy install option. I think this is the case because i have installed Lucid Beta 1 on physical machines from the same install ISO and not had the problem with the keyboard being set to SKIP. This may just be a case of VM needing to update their unattended install script, or possibly the Ubuntu post install checking to make sure the keyboard is not set to SKIP and if it is, prompting the user to specify a keyboard. I have checked again and its definitely set to SKIP after a default install of Lucid without updates installed. sudo DISPLAY=:0 xprop -root |grep NAMES.S _XKB_RULES_NAMES(STRING) = evdev, SKIP, gb,us, mac,, -- keyboard input broken due to invalid SKIP keyboard model https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/548891 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
[Bug 548891] Re: keyboard input broken due to invalid SKIP keyboard model
The problem definitely exists from the beginning. I have checked a number of times with basic installs of Lucid Beta 1 without installing updates and they all come out with exactly the same output: DISPLAY=:0 xprop -root |grep NAMES.S _XKB_RULES_NAMES(STRING) = evdev, SKIP, gb,us, mac,, So its seems the problem is dormant until such time as the latest console-setup update is applied and re-applies the settings and then breaks things. -- keyboard input broken due to invalid SKIP keyboard model https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/548891 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 548891] Re: keyboard input broken at gnome login prompt after package updates
Ok, i rebuilt the VM as it only takes about 10mins to recreate. I ran the following before the update: sudo DISPLAY=:0 xprop -root |grep NAMES.S _XKB_RULES_NAMES(STRING) = evdev, SKIP, gb,us, mac,, and then again after the update: sudo DISPLAY=:0 xprop -root |grep NAMES.S _XKB_RULES_NAMES(STRING) = evdev, SKIP, us, U.S. English, The only way i can do anything is by using an ssh session to the VM at the moment. I cannot login into GDM. I have tried logging in remotely and doing a service gdm shutdown and then a start but makes no difference. I am happy to setup a new VM without the updates and go through a troubleshooting process if anyone has any ideas as to what they would like me to supply them to compare what is different between the working and broken setups.

My none-working setup is as follows: VMWare Fusion 3.0.2 build-232780 Host OS: Mac OSX 10.6.3 (32/64bit) Guest OS: Ubuntu 10.04 Beta (64-bit), Kernel Ubuntu 2.6.32-19.28-generic I have setup a second VM should anyone wish to check the differences, with a standard install of 10.04 beta1, no updates installed whatsoever. [Bug 548891] Re: keyboard input broken at gnome login prompt after package updates
Just to add to your woes and to add a bit of diversity. I would like to point out that this does not only apply to Ubuntu as VM on a Windows host. I have exactly the same problem with Lucid, running under VM Fusion on Mac OSX. Interestingly, i only built this machine today and only had this problem once i updated the machine. I built the initial VM using a beta1 ISO and everything was wonderful. Unfortunately i have not been one of the lucky ones and been able to use the onscreen keyboard to login. I have no way to log in whatsoever, the keyboard does not come up if i try using the onscreen keyboard. WIth me, the problem only occurs with ubuntu when I use automated gdm login.
