Thank you for getting back to me and for your suggestion and I did run the following command in the terminal; sudo sh -c "echo 'realtime-scheduling = no' >> /etc/pulse/daemon.conf" By doing that, the terminal asked for my password which I entered, however from that point it just seemed to be waiting for me to write another command. I then restarted the notebook as you advised. Sadly this did not seem to make any difference as the sound icon was not even on the top right of the screen or did any drivers show up. After I tried this, I restarted the notebook again and pressed F7 and opened up the BIOS, and went to the Chipset Screen, then I selected the South Bridge item, then clicked Audio Configuration item, there I selected on LPE Audio Support and I changed it from LPE Audio ACPI mode to LPE Audio PCI mode, the only other option on there was to disable it, mind. I pressed the F4 - Save and restart. I'm having the same problem. Have a Dell XPS 15 with Network controller: Intel Corporation Wireless 7260 (rev 6b). Wifi link constanlty drops. Disabling power management and 11n_disable stablizes the connection a bit so I no longer get dropped off but wifi link is still very slow (it varies from minute to minute but over all still very slow). See my bug for apport information, I still have this problem and requires a manual (not very noob friendly) config file edit to grub to fix it. Whole point of Ubuntu is that it is a user friendly distribution, this pretty much kills some of the usability for 1370 users. If there's any other commands you would like me to run for you, let me know. Hello All, Please be aware that acidrip is largely a GUI for mencoder. This fault exists at the mencoder level. I have compiled the latest svn source code of mplayer (which includes mencoder) and the problem still persists. This laptop uses a nvidia graphics card for display and brightness which is not supported by ubuntu's default configuration. There is only one way that I have found to actually make the brightness go up and down: 1. Add acpi_osi=Linux acpi_backlight=vendor ro to /boot/grub/grub.cfg 2. Type echo 5 /sys/class/backlight/nv_backlight/brightness And even with acpi_backlight=vendor switched on, using the Fn key to affect brightness still does not work, presumably because its trying to use dell_backlight, which does nothing. No, it is not due to a regression, every Linux version that has ever been on it has had the same problem and will continue to have the same problem until a patch is submitted. No updates have made a difference. The problem is no doubt due to the Nvidia graphics on the laptop. I believe the Nvidia chipset handles the screen brightness. I believe it has a geforce 105M. Pressing Fn + Brightness Up and Down results in the brightness indicator
jumping randomly up and down, with no change to the actual brightness.
This laptop uses a nvidia graphics card for display and brightness which
is not supported by ubuntu's default configuration.
There is only one way that I have found to actually make the brightness go up
and down:
1. Add acpi_osi=Linux acpi_backlight=vendor ro to /boot/grub/grub.cfg
2. Type echo 5 /sys/class/backlight/nv_backlight/brightness
And even with acpi_backlight=vendor switched on, using the Fn key to
affect brightness still does not work, presumably because its trying to
use dell_backlight, which does nothing.
Output of ls /sys/class/backlight with acpi_backlight=vendor:

dell_backlight nv_backlight

Normally this only contains acpi_video0 (off top of head so might be a typo).
I think someone needs to make a patch to fix this bug.

Public bug reported: Pressing Fn + Brightness Up and Down results in the brightness indicator jumping randomly up and down, with no change to the actual brightness. This laptop uses a nvidia graphics card for display and brightness which is not supported by ubuntu's default configuration. There is only one way that I have found to actually make the brightness go up and down: 1. Add acpi_osi=Linux acpi_backlight=vendor ro to /boot/grub/grub.cfg 2. Type echo 5 /sys/class/backlight/nv_backlight/brightness And even with acpi_backlight=vendor switched on, using the Fn key to affect brightness still does not work, presumably because its trying to use dell_backlight, which does nothing. Output of ls /sys/class/backlight with acpi_backlight=vendor: root@r-Inspiron-1370:~# ls /sys/class/backlight dell_backlight nv_backlight root@r-Inspiron-1370:~# Normally this only contains acpi_video0 (off top of head so might be a typo).
