2010-11-08 Thread Rick Silva
Thanks for the response recommendation Rodrigo.

Can you please quit evolution, and, on a terminal, run:
 $ /usr/lib/evolution/e-addressbook-factory
and then run evolution again and try opening the Ubuntu One addressbook?
Then, please copy all output in the terminal and paste it here

This results in very many of the following:

[Bug 671507] Re: Evolution lost Ubuntu One contacts, there still in the Couchdb database though

2010-11-07 Thread Rick Silva
I've run into an issue that is not identical to yours, but has many
similarities:

Contacts not synching bidirectionally between Evolution and U1
http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?p=10083548#post10083548

The error dialog in the screenshot you posted above... have seen that a
lot. The workaround at
https://wiki.ubuntu.com/UbuntuOne/FAQ/WhyArentMyContactsSyncing would
often (but not always) result in this error appearing consistently; it
wasn't untill I used a variation of this, along with rebooting the
machine, that I got back to a state where the error is not thrown
(although I'm still having the problem where my contacts from U1 don't
show up in Evolution's CouchDB addressbook)

[Bug 630383] Re: Gnome-terminal paste keyboard shortcut does not work

2010-10-03 Thread Rick Silva
I'm experiencing this with the Maverick (10.10) Release Candidate for
Netbooks. With the default 'terminal' app available via applications.
Running it 'Live' from USB stick (i.e. not installed)

Not only does Shift+Ctrl+V fail to paste, but Shift+Ctrl+C fails to copy
the selected text.

Use of the Edit menu options for Copy and Paste does work.
Use of Ctrl+Ins and Shift+Ins also does work for Copy and Paste.

But for as long as I've been using Ubuntu, Shift+Ctrl+C and Shift+Ctrl+V
have been the default key combinations for the Copy and Paste functions
in gnome-terminal. People have probably gotten used to this, and might
find it confusing to find them no longer working in Maverick.

[Bug 585765] Re: Ubuntu 10.04 random freezes

2010-08-12 Thread Rick Silva
I've been able to prevent this issue from happening, by disabling
Pulseaudio (as per the excellent guide at
http://www.jeffsplace.net/node/12 ).

My system (Intel D945GCLF2, Atom 330, running Lucid w/
2.6.32-24-generic) has had no problems at all except when I'd recently
been running some audio or video-with-audio; then I'd randomly fall into
a situation where the screen and mouse would freeze / lock up (but I
could still ssh in to it and restart it etc.) .

[Bug 479296] Re: Karmic: frequent freezes

2010-08-12 Thread Rick Silva
I've been able to prevent this issue from happening, by disabling
Pulseaudio (as per the excellent guide at
http://www.jeffsplace.net/node/12 )

I should probably clarify that this initially started happening to me
with Karmic, but continued to occur after having upgraded to Lucid. My
system (Intel D945GCLF2, Atom 330, running Lucid w/ 2.6.32-24-generic)
has had no problems at all except when I'd recently been running some
audio or video-with-audio; then I'd randomly fall into a situation
desribed above where the screen and mouse would freeze / lock up (but I
could still ssh in to it and restart it etc.) . But, again, now that
Pulseaudio is out of the picture, I've not had a single lock up.

[Bug 479296] Re: Karmic: frequent freezes

2010-07-24 Thread Rick Silva
Back to report a couple additional observations...

- when the desktop mouse freeze occurs, I *am* still able to ssh in to
the system. So it appears that it's not a complete system hang

- while connected remotely, if I run 'shutdown -r now' on the afflicted
machine, I notice that the Desktop goes through a graceful shutdown --
the apps start closing one-by-one; and most interestingly, the mouse
becomes responsive again!

- I've a gut feeling that video playback activity may be what causes the
freeze. It appears to occur most often (after I've been playing a video
from within a browser (e.g. youtube); I don't recall it having happened
after I've played a video from a locally-stored file (e.g. VLC playing a
.wmv or .avi) and I've played a lot of music via Rhythmbox since the
last time it freezed. And have gone through dozens of suspend / resume
cycles.

The afflicted Lucid system has been through a number of updates since my
last post. Here's where it's now at:

Linux user1-desktop 2.6.32-23-generic #37-Ubuntu SMP Fri Jun 11 07:54:58

[Bug 360378] Re: Gave up waiting for root device after upgrade then busybox console

2010-06-30 Thread Rick Silva
Colin Watson, can you pls clarify the reason for this bug having been
marked invalid on 6/17 ? Is it superseded by 577353? The experiences
described by several people above do seem to indicate that this problem
does [still] exist in Lucid. I am able to reliably reproduce this
problem, whenever upgrading UNR to 2.6.32-22 .

Thanks

[Bug 360378] Re: Gave up waiting for root device after upgrade then busybox console

2010-05-03 Thread Rick Silva
Found a new fix...

Had ried a couple of the solutions above:
- added root delay to grub.conf / kernel boot options
- changed grub to reference the root drive directly instead of by UUID
- copied initrd.img-2.6.32-21-generic from another machine running Lucid
... but neither of those worked

However, after copying the initrd.ing from the bootable USB (Lucid
Netbook Edition) I had used to perform the installation on this machine,
then the problem was resolved - machine booted successfully and quickly
as expected, instead of going to the busybox screen

Here's the file that was copied from the Live USB / installer, onto my machine
(into /boot) :
  13513060 2010-05-02 22:11 initrd.img-2.6.32-21-generic

Many thanks to this excellent doc, which got me on the path of this fix.

[Bug 474698] Re: vpnc doesn't connect with empty user password.

2009-11-22 Thread Rick Silva
I encountered this bug also, with a fresh install of karmic (UNR), vpnc,
and network-manager-vpnc .My company's vpn requires that I enter a
passcode from an RSA SecurID token, but I did not ever get prompted for
such.

I did find the following workaround:

- NetworkManager \ VPN Connections \ Configure VPN
- Select my VPN connection, press 'Edit'
- change User Password from Always Ask' to 'Saved'
- enter an arbitrary value for the password ; then Apply
- attempt a connection to the VPN, it will fail
- go back into Network Manager, clear the password, and change Saved back to
Always Ask; the Apply
- attempt a connection to the VPN. Now it works.

[Bug 288845] Re: r8169 counters, Intel Atom 230 (D945GCLF)

2009-01-04 Thread Rick Silva
FWIW, I'm having a good amount of success with the r8169 driver, for an
ethernet controller that lspci identifies as Realtek Semiconductor Co.,
Ltd. RTL8101E/RTL8102E PCI Express Fast Ethernet controller (rev 02)

- board is Intel D945GCLF w/ Atom @ 1.6ghz, ICH7
- OS is Ubuntu Intrepid;
- 'uname -r' == 2.6.27-9-generic
- acpid is running, apmd is disabled.

the link is stable and performance appears to be good, been running as
such since Hardy.

However, I am having one problem with it: the NIC doesn't work after a
resume from suspend. I'm not able to get any packets off the machine.
The interface comes up, everything looks good in 'ifconfig -a' ; I can
ping the interface's IP address, and 'netstat -r' looks fine. The orange
(speed/link) LED on the physical connector is lit, but the green
(activity) LED never lights. arping doesn't work either.

[Bug 225749] Re: Ubuntu 8.04 LiveCD fails to boot when RTL8102E LAN chip is enabled - with modprobe abnormal exit on ICH8M laptop

2009-01-04 Thread Rick Silva
@ Luke Barrett

The HP 1030NR does not have the Ethernet controller being discussed in
this bug report. The 1030NR uses a Marvell Yukon NIC.

However, you may find it reassuring to know you are not the only one
experiencing the problem where the NIC does not function under Ubuntu
Intrepid. I also have a 1030NR and can not get the wired NIC working
(works fine under WinXP though). Have not done much troubleshooting yet,
but it appears that a driver for the NIC is not being loaded, or the
hardware device is not being recognized. Hope this helps.

[Bug 102511] Re: apt throws bzip2/gzip errors for duplicated sources.list entries or duplicated componenes (race condition?)

2008-01-07 Thread Rick Silva
I have encountered the same problem (bzip2 error being thrown when
trying to upgrade [from edgy to feisty]) and I believe there may be a
cause for this, other than duplicated entries in sources.list file

Detailed description of the problem I've encountered can be found here:
http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=660619

In trying to implement the solution suggested here above, I messed
around quite extensively with my original sources.list file (i.e. trying
to remove any duplication) but none of my changes produced a different
result. So i got a new auto-generated sources.list, and am still
encountering the same failure. The new vanilla sources.list is attached.

** Attachment added: new vanilla sources.list file, that still causes failure
