[Bug 1836176] Re: Touchscreen stops working after S3 suspend on Lenovo X1 Yoga 3th

2021-04-22 Thread Ricky Brent
There's a better workaround (method 3) now suggested on the arch wiki page:
https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Lenovo_ThinkPad_X1_Yoga_(Gen_3)

It works with Ubuntu as well; you can test it when the touch screen
isn't responding with:

sudo apt install acpi-call-dkms; sudo modprobe acpi_call; echo
'\\_SB.PCI0.LPCB.EC._Q2A' | sudo tee /proc/acpi/call

[Bug 1836176] Re: Touchscreen stops working after S3 suspend on Lenovo X1 Yoga 3th

2020-04-19 Thread Ricky Brent
usbcore.quirks=056a:5146:m also failed for me (with 19.10 and focal); I
read on the Arch wiki that disabling Thunderbolt in the bios (under
Security -> IO ports) might work and tried it, and it worked!

I imagine this breaks Thunderbolt, but have no way to test.

[Bug 1798572] Re: package lxd 3.0.1-0ubuntu1~18.04.1 failed to install/upgrade: new lxd package pre-installation script subprocess returned error exit status 1

2020-04-10 Thread Ricky Brent
Speaking of, I ran into this bug moving from 18.04 to 20.04.

It left apt in a broken state, but I was able to uninstall the lxd and
lxd-client packages and complete the upgrade.

Is there any workaround for this besides using another window manager? I
am rather liking Unity but this makes the launcher nearly useless.

[Bug 882349] Re: sandybridge video, minecraft unplayable

2011-11-10 Thread Ricky Brent
*** This bug is a duplicate of bug 829086 ***
https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/829086

This bug effected/effects me as well (i5-2520M), but this is a duplicate
of https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/xserver-xorg-video-
intel/+bug/882349 and you can work around it with the instructions here
:https://bugs.freedesktop.org/show_bug.cgi?id=39730

Robvdl says a proper fix is headed upstream though.

I was able to do the one shot fix by compiling the latest intel-gpu-
tools from git, then running as root:

sudo ./intel_reg_write 0x9404 0x1000

[Bug 476870] Re: Middle-click randomly kills synergyc

2009-11-23 Thread Ricky Brent
I found that, to summarize... if I have a 9 button on the mouse on the
server, but the client only has a 3 button mouse, synergy will crash
when I use one of those extra buttons. As some others have noticed,
it's whatever the last mouse used had.

As a work around for me -- and this is nowhere near a good solution,
but it beats losing my keyboard and mouse every time Synergy crashes --
I add a trackstick.fdi file to /etc/hal/fdi/policy/ :

match key=info.product string=PS/2 Generic Mouse
 merge key=input.x11_options.EmulateWheel type=stringtrue/merge
 merge key=input.x11_options.EmulateWheelButton type=string2/merge
 merge key=input.x11_options.YAxisMapping type=string4 5/merge
 merge key=input.x11_options.XAxisMapping type=string26 27/merge
 merge key=input.x11_options.Emulate3Buttons type=stringtrue/merge
 merge key=input.x11_options.EmulateWheelTimeout type=string200/merge
 merge key=input.x11_options.Buttons type=string32/merge
/match

(I have a trackstick identified as PS/2 Generic Mouse on my Vaio P,
obviously.) This lets me do vertical scrolling while holding the middle
mouse button down, and since I don't have buttons 26 and 27 assigned to
do anything, doesn't let me scroll horizontally with the trackstick
(still works fine via Synergy.) The Buttons parameter seems to be
ignored. All the other buttons that are missing -- 8 and 9 for my mouse
-- also work fine.

Obviously this kind of kludge won't work for other people, but hopefully
it will help.

[Bug 462267] Re: battstat applet is missing

2009-11-07 Thread Ricky Brent
I can see that it was removed deliberately, and reading the reasons it
seems understandable.

I would like to point out that the battstat applet is a very different
thing from the g-p-m. It was an applet that could be moved and
rearranged, the current charge could be displayed on the panel, the
percentage, time remaining were options, it had a horizontal display
option, and so on. The g-p-m appears in the notification area. It is
not added by add to panel. It is not the same type of thing and
shows far less data.

Saying it uses deprecated methods or has too many bugs is one thing, but
please do not promote the g-p-m as a replacement -- the two are not the
same at all.

I ran into this in the beta and RC and was hoping it was a bug --
please, *please* remove battstat applet from the list of things
provided by the gnome-applets package since it has actually been removed
from the things provided by said package. Right now, someone (like me)
who runs into this *problem* will think it an accident rather than a
deliberate move.

[Bug 129380] Re: It does not refresh well when dragging a window in the rotated screen (Santa Rosa)

Turning off tiling made it respond *much* more quickly for me as well. I
read there were many disadvantages to doing without tiling, but the
massive performance boost while rotated is worth it.

[Bug 269656] Re: AN IRRELEVANT LICENSE IS PRESENTED TO YOU FREE-OF-CHARGE ON STARTUP

2008-09-14 Thread Ricky Brent
Ok, does this seem familiar to anyone else? Mozilla is waiting until a
distro is just about to ship then slapping them with demands they either
have to give into quick or do a lot of work to get around. First they
did it with Debian, and now with Ubuntu. Why are the distros putting up
with this crap? Maybe once I could see as honestly just realizing it
was missing, but come on.

[Bug 135658] Re: synergy+glipper causes clipboard to stop working on WinXP client

2008-01-15 Thread Ricky Brent
This happens in Ubuntu 7.10 (AMD64) as well, and is not limited only to
Synergy on Windows machines -- all connected clients do not work if the
machine running the synergy server is also running Glipper.

There are no issues if you run Glipper and then run Synergy in client
mode as long as the server is not running Glipper.

No idea what causes this, but my workaround is to run Klipper instead
of Glipper on the server; it's not GTK, but they work the same way, and
it does not conflict with Synergy.

[Bug 82099] Re: Sounds are taken over by java programs

2007-10-05 Thread Ricky Brent
I had/have a similar problem as well, although in my case, like Thomas
Detoux's, killing java gave me sound back. I was able to fix it by
using the ALSA wrapper for OSS applications (package alsa-oss, command
is aoss) before launching java. I was losing sound even when the java
program I was running did not use sound, although not right away.

I didn't try it with applets, but it make work if you do the same to
firefox.
