[Bug 1386721] Re: Graphics Slow After Upgrade 14.04 - 14.10
Radeon 7730M using the i915 driver. 00:02.0 VGA compatible controller [0300]: Intel Corporation 3rd Gen Core processor Graphics Controller [8086:0166] (rev 09) 01:00.0 VGA compatible controller [0300]: Advanced Micro Devices, Inc. [AMD/ATI] Chelsea LP [Radeon HD 7730M] [1002:682f] (rev ff) After upgrading to 14.10 tonight, I noticed a slowdown especially while using totem. I was getting about 0.2 frames per second using totem. VLC appeared to run but was choppy at larger resolutions. Other than totem, the primary symptom was sluggishness. It took 1 second for gnome-shell to react to selecting and dragging a gnome- terminal that was in the background behind chrome. After the upgrade, the kernel appeared to be running the i915 module (as seen by lshw -c video). ibus-gtk was already installed, so it wasn't that either. Then I installed the edger's xserver ppa. This helped both gnome-shell and totem, considerably. Videos actually ran for a second or two at a time, but were still choppy in totem. What appeared to be happening was that gnome-shell would spike the cpu going to 80% when totem was running. Gnome-shell was more responsive but still sluggish using the edgers xserver. Dragging a gnome-terminal in the background still took around a second for gnome to respond. Then I installed gnome-staging ppa. This helped the most, eliminating the gnome-shell cpu spike while playing totem, and making the windows much more responsive including dragging a gnome-terminal that was in the background. So it looked like both things helped to varying degrees. I got a better totem frame rate using the edgers x server. But gnome-staging gave me a better gnome-shell performance. -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1386721 Title: Graphics Slow After Upgrade 14.04 - 14.10 To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/xorg/+bug/1386721/+subscriptions -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 1024827] Re: Ubuntu installer crash can't overwrite compose.ARMSCII-8.inc
I hit the bug tonight which left my system unbootable. Sequence to trigger the bug: Note: This requires a working install of linux with grub and windows already. 1. Install debian testing netinstall via unetbootin on a usb stick. 2. Install ubuntu via unetbootin on the same usb stick without reformatting. 3. Install Ubuntu, while reformatting the partitions 4. The error pops up stopping the install 5. Reboot, and watch grub enter rescue mode. There are two bugs: 1. Unetbootin is broken 2. Ubiquity leaves the system in a useless state so it can't be rebooted even if there's another bootable partition (in my case Win7) on it. How to fix it: 1. File a bug report upstream to Unetbootin 2. Ubiquity can detect the bug and fail early. It fails already, just make it fail before the drives get reformatted. :) If I reboot the machine right now, grub is borked, and I get the joy of booting windows by typing in grub commands somehow. I don't see this being a good thing for the end user. -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1024827 Title: Ubuntu installer crash can't overwrite compose.ARMSCII-8.inc To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/ubiquity/+bug/1024827/+subscriptions -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
