[Bug 297119] Re: Intrepid Upgrade+Live CD: Radeon RV280 9200 Blank Screen

2009-11-25 Thread Robbie G
Hi Chaps,

I've booted the Live CD to a gnome GUI with no problems. Additionally, a
fresh install to disk has produced a fully working Karmic implementation
with no intervention or tweaks :-)

Davide, I wonder if we have different revisions of this chipset?

[Bug 192009] Re: gnome panel has no way to specify on which screen it should appear

2009-11-23 Thread Robbie G
I got fed up with manual hacks gconf editor etc etc etc installed
cairo dock which stays put on my laptop screen irrespective of whether I
have the external monitor connected. Just what I wanted and though eye-
candy's not what it's about, it looks rather good too! You'll need to
clear down your gnome panel and set it to hide in some way, but if
you're here then you'll know your way round gnome panel well enough to
sort something out methinks ;-)

Further to above, software center did eventually download Freevo.
Perhaps therefore the option to cancel is most important in case
internet access is interrupted or repository is down or unbearably slow.

[Bug 192009] Re: gnome panel has no way to specify on which screen it should appear

2009-08-20 Thread Robbie G
Is there any update on this bug?

My gnome panel moves from my laptop screen to the external monitor every
time I connect it at work and it's profoundly annoying as I travel a
lot and lose my gnome panel next time I'm on the road. Going into gconf-
editor to kludge it back to the laptop screen is very, very unfriendly.

[Bug 297119] Re: Intrepid Upgrade+Live CD: Radeon RV280 9200 Blank Screen

2009-05-18 Thread Robbie G
Davide, it looks like we have some difference in our environments or
symptoms. My card's reported as:

ATI Technologies Inc RV280 [Radeon 9200 PRO] (rev 01)

and my symptom was a completely blank screen. This in is now fixed in
the latest 9.04 live CD.

You report a corrupted, not a blank screen - can you describe this in
more detail.

[Bug 247826] Re: 0.12.0-1 Subtitles. ocrad used instead of tesseract

2008-11-27 Thread Robbie G
Thanks Julien, great work - we got there in the end!

The following *correct* behaviour is now seen with OGMrip
0.12.2-0.0ubuntu2~ppa5:

With my last setup i.e. only tesseract installed: tesseract is used

and...

With gocr, ocrad tesseract installed: tesseract is used
With only gocr ocrad installed: gocr is used
With only ocrad installed: ocrad is used

i.e. the behaviour as described by the great man himself:

Comment By: Olivier Rolland (billl)
Date: 2008-07-12 08:45
Since 0.12, ogmrip detects at runtime which OCR are installed and selects
either tesseract, gocr or ocrad, in that order.

[Bug 247826] Re: 0.12.0-1 Subtitles. ocrad used instead of tesseract

2008-11-18 Thread Robbie G
Hi, my first test with only tesseract (i.e. no gocr or ocrad) installed
results in the following:

1) Tesseract cannot be used as there is no ability to rip srt subtitles.

2) 3 profiles disappear from the list of profiles - these are ones
that use SRT text as the subtitle decoder. A profile configured with
vobsub remains

3) If I add a new profile, the subtitle CODEC selector is blank
(screenshot attached)

If I install either gocr or ocrad, the profiles reappear and I am able
to select a subtitle CODEC in a new profile.

I hope this helps diagnose the problem!

[Bug 247826] Re: 0.12.0-1 Subtitles. ocrad used instead of tesseract

2008-11-14 Thread Robbie G
I am on intrepid now too and tesseract is not being used however in my
case gocr is being selected.

This is odd because ocrad is installed which, if I read things
correctly, is different to the rule Launchpad Janitor details 21/10/08
namely:

Set Depends for ocr to tesseract | ocrad | gocr . (LP: #247826)

which I assume is an order of preference depending on what OGMrip finds
installed.

Hope this helps, Rob

1) With tesseract, gocr ocrad installed (my config), gocr is used.

tesseract-ocr-eng install
[EMAIL PROTECTED]:~$ dpkg --get-selections | grep gocr
gocrinstall
[EMAIL PROTECTED]:~$ dpkg --get-selections | grep ocrad
ocrad install

gives us:

I will run 2 more checks without gocr. 2) with ocrad and tesseract 3)
with tesseract ony as per your request.

Will post again with each result

Cheers, Rob

[Bug 297119] [NEW] Intrepid Upgrade+Live CD: Radeon RV280 9200 Blank Screen

2008-11-12 Thread Robbie G
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: xserver-xorg

Hi,

I have upgraded to intrepid and experienced a blank screen at X startup.
All was fine under hardy. In retrospect I should have tried the live CD
first - the same thing happens with the intrepid live CD i.e. screen
goes blank at X startup. Gutsy Hardy live CD boots to gnome with no
trouble.

My card is: ATI Technologies Inc RV280 [Radeon 9200 PRO] (rev 01)

Notes:
1) I have added driver ati and driver vesa into xorg.conf as per
suggestions on other seemingly related postings but this makes no difference.

2) My monitor has only DVI and I get a blank screen every time i.e. this
is a different bug from those who have reported an intermittant Radeon
issue (#274290).

3) If I use safe graphics mode I still get a blank screen.

I attach 2 failure logs for normal mode and one for safe graphics mode.
I think the only difference in each failure for normal mode is 2 or 3
lines of memory addresses.

I've now reinstalled Gutsy (for old time's sake ;-) ) but can boot live
CD for any testing required.

2008-11-07 Thread Robbie G
Some updates regarding my experience. I this case I am only using the
live CD to aid replication of the problem.

1) My monitor has only DVI and I get a blank screen every time; I have
tried several times with the live CD (and also my hardy to intrepid
upgraded (X now screwed!) system) but never experience the occasional
success like Taco.

2) If I use safe graphics mode I still get a blank screen.

[Bug 247826] [NEW] 0.12.0-1 Subtitles. ocrad used instead of tesseract

2008-07-12 Thread Robbie G
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: ogmrip

Hi,

Version 0.12.0-1~getdeb (from Ubuntu MOTO developers) - I hope it's OK
to log this bug here despite the fact this version's not in the repo.

I have a subtitles issue where ocrad outputs a number 5 instead of a
capital letter S. I raised this with the OGMRip developers who state
that tesseract is the preferred choise of the OGMRip developers.

However, if I install tesseract it will not be used because the ubuntu
0.12.0-1 OGMRip specifies ocrad at build time which means that the
preferred behaviour does not take place.

I can see from the packaging history that this dependency was introduced
at ogmrip 0.11.1-0 as a bug fix (200600) by Florent Mertens however the
notes for that bug state Build with --with-ocr=ocrad : ogmrip can't
choose at runtime, so we have to make a choice at build time. - Add
ocrad to build-dep

But, since 0.12, ogmrip detects at runtime which OCR are installed and
selects either tesseract, gocr or ocrad, in that order so, according to
the developers, the build should specify --with-ocr=auto or --with-
ocr=tesseract instead.

Thanks for all the great work.

Regards, Rob

appear in the relases of Ubuntu.

Threads 363958 575978 reference only the font size / login screen
issue (Not sure about 706788) and temporary workarounds were suggested.

Threads 235214, 3609621 and bug 141001 reference issues with large fonts
appearing in gnome window titles AND the login screen. I previously
experienced both.

The issue with the large fonts in the window titles has been resolved
(bug 141001) - thanks to all involved.

However... It is now apparent that there were 2 separate issues here as
the login font issue remains. For clarity I attach a screenshot of the
login font issue that remains (this is unashamedly copied from a January
2007 post which shows the problems been around for a while!).

[Bug 139080] Re: Intel pro/wireless 3945ABG WEP can't connect : its happened to me too

2007-12-11 Thread Robbie G
An update to clarify my statement occasionally I note that it does
connect.

After 20 startups I have 6 successful wireless LAN connects and 14
failures. It appears to be totally random.

[Bug 141001] Re: Large fonts in window titles

2007-12-06 Thread Robbie G
Hi all.

An update to state that (very) large fonts are also present in window
titles in Hardy Heron 8.04.

They are apparent upon first install but disappear immediately upon
changing Visual Effects from Normal to None in System / Preferences
/ Appearance.

Note. I can also confirm that, as mentioned before, very large fonts are
used by default on the Ubuntu login screen such that the boxes into
which I type the login and password are like a window to a font that
is 5 times larger than the box will show.

My screen resolution is (widescreen) 1280x800 and my display hardware is
as follows:

00:02.0 VGA compatible controller: Intel Corporation Mobile 945GM/GMS,
943/940GML Express Integrated Graphics Controller (rev 03)
00:02.1 Display controller: Intel Corporation Mobile 945GM/GMS/GME, 943/940GML
Express Integrated Graphics Controller (rev 03)

Hope this helps, Rob

[Bug 139080] Re: Intel pro/wireless 3945ABG WEP can't connect : its happened to me too

2007-12-06 Thread Robbie G
Issue still present in Hardy Heron 8.04 (with WPA)

I have a Fujitsu Siemens Amilo Pi 1505 with a 3945ABG wireless card
which regularly fails to connect to a WPA network though occasionally I
note that it does connect. This issue was present under 7.10.

The commonly reported message in syslog is:
error getting ESSID for device eth1: Resource temporarily unavailable

and when it times out the following message is written:
Activation (eth1/wireless): association took too long (120s), failing
activation

For reference, I have another Ubuntu 7.10 Fujitsu Siemens laptop a V2040
with Intel Corporation PRO/Wireless 2200BG Network Connection (rev 05)
also another Ubuntu 7.10 IBM laptop with an Ralink RA2500 PCMCIA card.
Both of these machines connect to the network immediately and never drop
the connection. The IBM is on 24x7.

The relevant portion of the syslog is attached.

[Bug 108577] Re: pulseaudio esd wrapper is not working with gnome

2007-12-06 Thread Robbie G
Issue evident in Hardy Heron 8.04 too.

Hi, I have a new clean install of 8.04 i.e. I have not consciously
installed pulseaudio (actually I do not even know what it is) and have
not installed any other software. I get this same error written to
syslog repeatedly too.

To the previous respondent, I believe this answers your question
regarding changes to config files - I made none and this is happening by
default.

I have the following sound hardware (from lspci):

Audio device: Intel Corporation 82801G (ICH7 Family) High Definition
Audio Controller (rev 02)

My syslog is attached.
