[Bug 1086873] [NEW] SIGSEGV upon entering '#' at beginning of line at prompt

2012-12-05 Thread Robert Irelan
Public bug reported:

Typing a '#' character at the start of the line at the interactive
prompt, followed by any other character (except if it is deleted by
using backspace, Ctrl-U, etc.) causes ksh to immediately segfault and
coredump. If you use Ctrl-V to input a control character literal, it
doesn't crash on Ctrl-V, but the next character. Core dump is attached.

Ubuntu 12.04.1, ksh 93u-1.

2010-09-06 Thread Robert Irelan
For me, this bug started with the updates on Labor Day. As with the
poster before, the gvfsd-smb and gvfsd-smb-browse processes spin at 100%
CPU usage. On the other hand, mounting those same shares using
mount.cifs works fine.

[Bug 451704] [NEW] [Dell Inc. Latitude D820] resume failure after removing iPod during suspend [non-free: nvidia]

2009-10-14 Thread Robert Irelan
Public bug reported:

While suspending my laptop, I removed my iPod during the suspend. The
suspend completed successfully. However, on resume, the laptop went into
a kernel panic 5 seconds after the resume had started. I hadn't
unmounted the iPod before suspending, so this might have arisen due to
the unexpected disconnection of the iPod.

ProblemType: KernelOops
Annotation: This occured during a previous suspend and prevented it from
resuming properly.

[Bug 441830] [NEW] Ubuntu 9.10 - can't install wine, build-essential: gcc-4.4-base dependency error

2009-10-03 Thread Robert Irelan
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gcc-4.4-base

I'm not sure if this is the right package to report this bug against. I just
installed the Ubuntu 9.10 beta on x86_64, and it's running mostly fine.
However, when I tried to install wine, I get this message:
Some packages could not be installed. This may mean that you have
requested an impossible situation or if you are using the unstable
distribution that some required packages have not yet been created
or been moved out of Incoming.
The following information may help to resolve the situation:

The following packages have unmet dependencies:
wine: Depends: ia32-libs (>= 1.6) but it is not going to be installed
Recommends: winbind but it is not going to be installed
E: Broken packages

When I try to install ia32-libs, I get this:
The following packages have unmet dependencies:
ia32-libs: Depends: lib32gcc1 but it is not going to be installed
Depends: lib32stdc++6 but it is not going to be installed
E: Broken packages

And when I try to install lib32gcc1, I get this:
The following packages have unmet dependencies:
  lib32gcc1: Depends: gcc-4.4-base (= 4.4.1-4ubuntu4) but 4.4.1-4ubuntu5 is to
be installed
E: Broken packages

However, when I try to install gcc-4.4-base, I get:
gcc-4.4-base is already the newest version.

And when I try to remove it, I get:
The following packages have unmet dependencies:
libgcc1: Depends: gcc-4.4-base (= 4.4.1-4ubuntu5) but it is not going to be
installed
libstdc++6: Depends: gcc-4.4-base (= 4.4.1-4ubuntu5) but it is not going to
be installed
E: Broken packages

Similarly, when I try to install build-essential, I get this:
The following packages have unmet dependencies:
build-essential: Depends: g++ (>= 4:4.3.1) but it is not going to be installed
E: Broken packages

When I try to install g++, I get this:
The following packages have unmet dependencies:
g++: Depends: g++-4.4 (>= 4.4.1-1) but it is not going to be installed
E: Broken packages

And when I try to install g++-4.4, I get this:
The following packages have unmet dependencies:
  g++-4.4: Depends: gcc-4.4-base (= 4.4.1-4ubuntu4) but 4.4.1-4ubuntu5 is to be

[Bug 359868] Re: [Acer, inc. Aspire 4530] suspend/resume failure [non-free: nvidia]

2009-08-26 Thread Robert Irelan
I don't know how applicable this piece of advice is to this issue, because I am
using Fedora 11 with the 2.6.29.6-217.2.16.fc11.x86_64 kernel (i.e. on a 64-bit
install). In any case, I was trying to solve the occasional flickering that I
was noticing and came across this site:
http://www.ubuntusolutions.org/2009/02/screen-flickering-with-nvidia-on-ubuntu.html
Specifically, the advice that proved useful was to add the following lines to
/etc/modprobe.d/options (actually, any file in the /etc/modprobe.d/ directory;
e.g. I used /etc/modprobe.d/nvidia):

options nvidia NVreg_RegistryDwords='PerfLevelSrc=0x'
options nvidia NVreg_Mobile=1

Apparently, the equivalents of these registry values from the Windows
driver are not enabled by default in Fedora (and I suppose not in
Ubuntu, either, because I have never been able to resume successfully
from suspend in Ubuntu or Fedora until now). Perhaps pci=nomsi is also
needed, although I haven't checked if that option is needed. For me,
when both the modprobe lines and the kernel option are active, I can
suspend and resume using the nvidia driver successfully, and access my
disks as well, which I couldn't do before, even with the pci=nomsi
kernel option. I'm just posting this here because it might help some of
the reporters of this bug. I will do more experiments later.

[Bug 361878] Re: [Jaunty] No sound on a Toshiba Tecra A10

2009-05-05 Thread Robert Irelan
No, the above tip didn't make any difference for me. As I said, it's
only the GNOME volume control and GNOME Gstreamer applications that I
have had trouble with so far. Anything else that uses Gstreamer or
Pulseaudio works perfectly. I can even open 'pavucontrol' to control the
volume of my programs and output volume. Interestingly, thought, when I
open the PulseAudio Manager 'paman' and play the test sounds, only the
WAV sound 'dialog-question.wav' plays, not any of the OGG ones, although
this is probably just due to the fact that Pulseaudio uses Gstreamer to
play Ogg files and Gstreamer on GNOME is not functional at the moment.
Playing the corresponding files in '/usr/share/sounds/ubuntu/stereo'
with VLC succeeds, although some of them contain almost no sound content
and are only a tiny fraction of a second long.

[Bug 361878] Re: [Jaunty] No sound on a Toshiba Tecra A10

2009-04-29 Thread Robert Irelan
I'm sorry for posting my configuration without introducing myself first.

Anyway, I have this bug as well on a Dell Latitude D820. On a clean
install, the sound works perfectly, but after the first round of updates
after a clean install (without installing anything else), the Volume
Control applet, as well as anything both GNOME and gstreamer related, is
broken, with identical error messages to those posted above. However,
sound still functions normally in all other instances---for example,
Songbird, which uses gstreamer but not GNOME, works, as does VLC on both
Default and ALSA output. In addition, running 'pasuspender -- speaker-
test -c2 -Dplughw:0' produces sound. However, Rhythmbox, Totem, and the
Sound Test buttons in the Sound configuration menu return failure.
