I have version 12.04 and two problems. 
1. On each start I have no sound, but when I run 
sudo modprobe snd_hda_intel
it is ok, so I put this command in a crontab to run on start from Ubuntu
2. If I start internet-radio 
i.e. http://www.bluewin.ch/de/frontend/w1/radio_popup.php?channelId=39324
there is no sound. But check with Rhythmbox, audiosystem is ok.

By installing VirtualBox 3.2.8 for Linux, Ubuntu 10.04 LTS ("Lucid
Lynx") i386, I got this problem.

Now after restart the PC I have no sound.
To get the sound back, I have to use: sudo modprobe snd_hda_intel
And this on each new start of the PC
