[Bug 671789] Re: Shotwell rotates images incorrectly

2014-10-17 Thread Marcello Romani
I am still on 12.04.
I am planning to upgrade to 14.04 anyway, so I'll see if the Shotwell version
that comes with that Ubu release fixes the issue.

[Bug 1236619] Re: gvfs smb / cifs file copy performance is terribly slow

2014-10-16 Thread Marcello Romani
Oddly enough, copying ~/huge_file to the same remote samba share _with
Nautilus_ maxes out the wire too.

So it appears to be an issue with cp and gvfs.

[Bug 1236619] Re: gvfs smb / cifs file copy performance is terribly slow

2014-10-16 Thread Marcello Romani
I have experienced this bug on two Ubuntu desktop 12.04.5 x64 systems, copying
to a debian 7 / samba 3.6 share.
I haven't tried other OS versions though.

Steps to reproduce:

Open remote share so it gets gvfs-mounted under ~/.gvfs
cd ~
cd .gvfs/path/to/remote/samba/share
cp ~/huge_file .

Speed: roughly 5.5 Mbyte/s

sudo mount /remote/samba/share /mnt
cp ~/huge_file /mnt/

Speed: roughly maxes out wire.

[Bug 671789] Re: Shotwell rotates images incorrectly

2014-09-14 Thread Marcello Romani
Shotwell 0.14.1 here.
Steps to (re)produce the bug:
1) import images without copying - thumbnails and images are displayed
correctly, as per the orientation tag
2) double click on a vertical (i.e. taken in portrait mode) photo
3) right click - open with external editor (gimp)
4) gimp asks if I want to rotate or not - yes, rotate
5) modify image, then save
6) shotwell starts eating 100% cpu and eventually crashes; when re-launched,
the image is distorted (see screenshot)
issue 6) happens about 80% of the time.

For the record: photos were taken with a Canon 60D camera, and are
located on an external ext4-foramtted USB hard drive.

** Attachment added: Distorted image as shown by shotwell after being edited
with Gimp.

[Bug 1329070] [NEW] Shotwell crashes when viewing photos imported from ext usb hard drive (connected)

2014-06-11 Thread Marcello Romani
Public bug reported:

How to reproduce:

Import pictures from ext hd:
1) Launch Shotwell
2) Import from folder (without copying), point to a folder located on an
ext4-formatted external USB hard drive.
3) Import completes successfully.
4) Close shotwell.

(Shutdown and power on laptop).

1) connect the usb hard drive; the folder where the pictures where imported
from is accessible through Nautilus
2) Launch Shotwell from command line: the thumbnails show up without issues.
3) Double click on a thumbnail: as soon as the image is shown in low-res,
filling the entire right-hand area of the application, Shotwell crashes with
the following output:

2013-12-16 Thread Marcello Romani
Hi!

Yes, I'm still running 12.04. To be precise:

cat /etc/lsb-release
DISTRIB_ID=Ubuntu
DISTRIB_RELEASE=12.04
DISTRIB_CODENAME=precise
DISTRIB_DESCRIPTION=Ubuntu 12.04.3 LTS

dpkg -l | grep screenruler
screenruler 0.960+bzr41-1

and the ruler is visible. Moreover, it stays on top no matter which
window I switch to.

So it's a fixed to me.

[Bug 1196218] Re: setting at event causes root partition to fill

2013-09-06 Thread Marcello Romani
While in my home dir, I typed
at 19:00
(the exact time is not important).
The at console appeared.
I then typed
myplayer song.mp3
(song.mp3 is in my home dir)
Then pressed CTRL+D

That's all.

Did a test a few minutes ago: / usage starts to grow as soon as the scheduled
action starts.
It keeps growning even after the action is complete, until / is full.

A sudo /etc/init.d/atd restart is enough to stop the growth and bring
the / usage back to its previous level.

[Bug 1170624] Re: kdesvn won't start

2013-04-19 Thread Marcello Romani
Thanks for the quick reply.
I checked my /etc/apt folder, and spotted this:

cat /etc/apt/sources.list.d/svn.list
deb http://opensource.wandisco.com/ubuntu lucid svn17

I commented that line out, did an apt-get udpate, reinstalled kdesvn and
had no problem at all.

Awhile ago I needed a more recent subversion installation but didn't
want to upgrade the whole OS just for that, so I added that particular
repo. Problem is, I forgot about that.

So I think you can close this bug invalid. Sorry for decreasing the
signal-to-noise ratio :-P

[Bug 268497] Re: double clicking on a non local bookmark trigger a dbus error

2012-09-10 Thread Marcello Romani
Old bug, I know, but... Just tried to reproduce it on 10.04.4 LTS x64.
I didn't manage to reproduce it.
IME this bug should be closed and marked fixed.

my 2 cents.

[Bug 711815] Re: Nautilus sometimes won't establish connection to windows share

2012-09-10 Thread Marcello Romani
I see this behaviour on one of our 10.04.4 x86 clients. The share is
located on a windows 2000 ad controller. The bug shows itself when
single-clicking on the windows share bookmark.

Sometimes just waiting a few seconds and then clicking again on the
bookmark makes the connection work.

Other times there's no way of connecting to the share by using the
bookmark. On those days the only way is using the File = Connect to
server dialog box, which always works.

So far this bug seems to affect only our single x86 10.04.4 client
machine. All other client machines that connect to the same windows 2000
share are 10.04.4 x64, and none of the shows the bug.

[Bug 909901] [NEW] The account setting window is too tall by default even on a 1366x768px screen

2011-12-29 Thread Marcello Romani
Public bug reported:

When I click on Edit = Account settings, the account preferences window
opens. It's so tall I can't see the OK and Cancel button in the lower
half part of the window. Trying to resize it is cumbersome, as the mouse
has to be precisely positioned on the very last top pixel of the window,
and what's worse is the window doesn't remember its new size, so I have
to resize it every time.

[Bug 780117] Re: Brasero finishes without error but unusable media [no simulation mode] (Ubuntu 11.04)

2011-12-27 Thread Marcello Romani
I can confirm this bug on 11.10 x64. I have just burned a DVD with 613 JPGs
onit. Burning options were: write directly on disk (no intermediate image), use
burnproof, DVD speed 3x, leave the disk open.
It completed the burning succesfully (apparently), then it started calculating
the disk checksum. In the end, a message box said manually eject the disk.
Below it there was another message box reporting an error: it was something
like burning error, some files might be damaged.
It turned out the DVD is totally unreadable.

Man, i HATE regressions like these...

[Bug 371434] Re: PCI ExpressCard hotplug requires pciehp.pciehp_force=1

2011-11-09 Thread Marcello Romani
[success] recently I tried an Acer 9500 which had an express-card gbit ethernet
adapter (the brand was Intellinet IIRC)
Booting with Ubuntu live cd, the card would be detected and perfectly
operational only if it was inserted right from the start. It would not be
detected if hot-plugged after the OS had come up.
After inserting the acpiphp module, though, the hot-plugging feature worked
flawlessly.
Thanks to all who reported the information here.

2011-10-26 Thread Marcello Romani
New reboot today. Now min and max cpu freq are normal again.

uname -a

cat /sys/devices/system/cpu/cpu0/cpufreq/cpuinfo_max_freq

I think it's fair to leave this bug as fix-released, but I'll need to
do more tests on this machine.

Seems the 3d screensaver was to blame. After configuring the system to
not launch any screensaver but just put the monitor to sleep the system
didn't show the problem anymore.

My guess is there is a bug in the video driver that shows when the 3d
section of the video card is used.

[photo thumbnails appear; I double click on one and f-spot crashes
emitting the following lines]

The program 'f-spot' received an X Window System error.
This probably reflects a bug in the program.

[Bug 611330] Re: ssh hangs after login when using broadcom wifi

2011-10-02 Thread Marcello Romani
I'll add another test I did today and in the past month: copying a file
via scp from the Lenovo machine to another laptop (both connected via
wifi, both runnung 10.10, both fully updated) is not possibile. The
transfer seem to happen but it stops right after the whole file seems to
have been transferred. It never hangs there. The file is created on the
other machine, but is 0 bytes long.

[Bug 611330] Re: ssh hangs after login when using broadcom wifi

2011-09-26 Thread Marcello Romani
I have a Lenovo Ideapad (don't remember the exact model right now), that used
to work fine. For some months now Facebook (which uses https) is nearly
unusable. Ssh, either via console or via Nautilus connection used to work fine
but now is impossible: infinite delays and frequent connection drops. Http
sites, ping traffic, etc. work fine instead.
I have tried both the proprietary drivers that restricted drivers function
suggested, to no avail.
I have installed and tried three browsers on this machine (four if I count the
default firefox package): firefox 6, Opera, Chromium. They all seem to work
fine at times, but the problem remains - facebook/https is barely usable.
The problem showed up out of the blue while using 10.04 (it must have been an
upgrade, but I didn't notice which it was when the problems started to show
up). I have upgraded to 10.10, but the problems still remains.
I'm thinking about trying an upgrade to 11.04, but fear a drop of perfomrance.
My last resort would be to reinstall a fresh 10.04 and don't do any upgrades,
or change distribution entirely...

[Bug 619610] Re: ubuntu-bug does not respect http_proxy

apport-bug uses https, so you just have to

export https_proxy=

instead of

export http_proxy=

I initially thought this was a bug too, but I think it isn't. I simply
had to set the correct environment variable.

[Bug 856233] Re: CPU frequency less than HW supported maximum

2011-09-22 Thread Marcello Romani
From the other system I was talking about I reported a bug too:

https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux/+bug/856375

To maintainers: feel free to mark one of the two bugs as duplicate of
the other. I reported both for completeness, hoping more info would help
the dev team...

[Bug 604117] Re: keypad as mouse set almost every time system is upgrade

Strangely enough, on another PC which has the same ubuntu version, with
the only difference being it's 32 bit instead of 64, the problem has
never happened...

[Bug 115774] Re: syslog.0 and kern.log.0 grow huge

2011-09-13 Thread Marcello Romani
I've been lucky enough to never experience this bug on my machines, but I'd
like to provide my 2 cents about what could cause the issue.
The log rotation system seems to be configured to rotate once a day:

-rw-r- 1 syslogadm 125K 2011-09-13 17:15 syslog
-rw-r- 1 syslogadm 86K 2011-09-13 07:40 syslog.1
-rw-r- 1 syslogadm 3,7K 2011-09-12 07:45 syslog.2.gz
-rw-r- 1 syslogadm 3,9K 2011-09-11 08:05 syslog.3.gz
-rw-r- 1 syslogadm 5,0K 2011-09-10 07:35 syslog.4.gz
-rw-r- 1 syslogadm 4,5K 2011-09-09 08:00 syslog.5.gz
-rw-r- 1 syslogadm 4,5K 2011-09-08 08:05 syslog.6.gz
-rw-r- 1 syslogadm 6,9K 2011-09-07 08:00 syslog.7.gz

(this is from my personal machine)

If the rotation takes place once a day regardless of size, the logfile
can grow very big if there are many processes which generate a lot of
noise.

HTH
