Re: [Bug 1090656] Re: Passwords aren't accepted anymore by PolicyKit
Hello Brian, Actually this bug is very mysterious to me. There are constantly popping up questions in the Launchpad answers of aptdaemon. Since it is quite a hurdle for new users to get from a detail in the policykit dialog that mentions the name aptdaemon to the Launchpad answer site of the project, I think that it could be a quite common error. I have got no clue about the reason for this issue. Listaller uses PackageKit's internal interfaces through a plugin, which only works with PK (it basically installs a thin layer in front of the native backend to catch Listaller packages). Aptd would need a rewritten Listaller plugin, which does not exist. GPK and Apper should work with aptd (if the system DBus API is complete). Thanks for the merge-work! Cheers, Matthias I prepared a merge for GPK, too. You can request a handler or several handlers for multiple mime types at once. I also cannot imagine a good use case for requesting several mime type handlers at the same time. But that is the given design of the PackageKit API that we need to implement here. The same is true for multimedia codecs - and more obvious: You e.g. need a handler for the audio stream, the video stream and the container format. In a cornor case all three handlers are located in separate packages. There is a small logic in session-installer that pre-selects the package or the best packages that provide all handlers by default. -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1125514 Title: Wording fix for Install software to open files? window To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/sessioninstaller/+bug/1125514/+subscriptions -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
Re: [Bug 1125514] Re: Wording fix for Install software to open files? window
hello mpt, but how to handle the case of multiple mime types or gstreamer codecs? generally not all applications can support all mime types or codecs. so in this particular case you need to show in the dialog which application supports which mime type. and perhaps which mime type is not supported add all. the test script has an option to search for multiple codecs. if you uninstall the gstreamer bad and ugly plugins you should get an idea and how this is handled currently. Matthew Paul Thomas m...@canonical.com schrieb: Thanks Sebastian! Currently my sketches in https://wiki.ubuntu.com/SoftwarePackageOperations#searching show only Mime types only, not human-readable names for types. I thought that if the OS doesn't have any software installed for a type, probably it doesn't know a human-readable name for the type either. After all, /etc/mime.types includes only Mime types and their corresponding filename suffixes, not human-readable names. (Maybe there is a list with human-readable names somewhere else?) It would be nice to show the human-readable name as well, if we know it. So, I've defined a file type string for use in the UI, being the Mime type, plus the human-readable name in brackets if known. https://wiki.ubuntu.com/SoftwarePackageOperations?action=diffrev2=27rev1=25 Does that look good to you? I am currently working on a 1.0 release of aptdaemon. Afterwards I will have a look at sessioninstaller. Should we show the technical definition of the type, e.g. audio/x-mp3 instead? The PackageKit API allows to specify more than one mime type. I was hoping that this was a kind of test setup and not a real life screenshot :/ Having a short look at the code I have to admit that the logic of the dialog isn't very good. I could add this to your code changes afterwards: platform.dist()[0] You can use the test command in the sessioninstaller source code to trigger the dialog yourself: In a terminal session run: ./session-installer And in a second one: ./test --install-mime-types audio/x-mp3 audio/x-ogg ** Description changed: + Logic of the mime type handler dialog isn't very good: + + * Doesn't handle the case in which we could not find a mime type handler at all + * Doesn't handle unknown mime types + + -- + I am using 12.04. [Bug 668846] Re: No obvious error when Software Centre can't install due to Synaptic being open
Aptdaemon already shows the name of the binary/application which holds the lock in the status message: Waiting for XXX to exit Possible values in real life are aptitude, apt-get, dpkg and synaptic. The status of the transaction is set to PK_STATUS_ENUM_WAITING_FOR_LOCK on the PackageKit interface and to aptdaemon.enums.STATUS_WATING_FOR_LOCK on the aptdaemon interface which is used by s-c. So basically all technical requirements are there. An important use case is the daily update of the cache to check for upgrades. It currently doesn't use aptdaemon but calls apt-get update. So you can get random cache locks. -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/668846 Title: No obvious error when Software Centre can't install due to Synaptic being open To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/software-center/+bug/668846/+subscriptions -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 668846] Re: No obvious error when Software Centre can't install due to Synaptic being open
The cleanest solution would be to use aptdaemon for the daily updates and in synaptic. But especially the later one would require a little bit of work. Since synaptic runs in the user session and aptdaemon doesn't it isn't the job of aptdameon to notify the user. Sending Synaptic to the front doesn't give the user any clue that he has to close it. Furthermore it is a bad idea to close an application without the confirmation of the user. You never know what kind of unapplied changes there are. ** Also affects: aptdaemon (Ubuntu) Importance: Undecided Status: New ** Changed in: aptdaemon (Ubuntu) Importance: Undecided = Low ** Changed in: aptdaemon (Ubuntu) Status: New = Confirmed -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/668846 Title: No obvious error when Software Centre can't install due to Synaptic being open To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/aptdaemon/+bug/668846/+subscriptions -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
[Bug 1032104] Re: The package is of bad quality error message is bad
Hopefully some first answers: (a) If you click on a package s-c is opened to install it. the second dialog is just an error message that the installation tiggered. The error only appears if you install a package file - it will never appear if installing from a repository. (d) The worst kind of problems: unpredictable problems :) And very technical ones. The quality problems are violations of the Ubuntu/Debian packaging policy. The user could see failures to install or update software or strange behavior of applications and crashes. (g) Isn't allowed isn't true anymore. That is correct. [Bug 441686] Re: Task cannot be monitored or controlled alert is unhelpful and scary
1. If aptdaemon dies because of SEGV we want to know it. So it is ok to get the apport report for aptdaemon. 2. It is not ok that s-c crashses too. It should show the task cannot be monitoried ... error dialog. I will have a look at it. SIGKILL could also do the job to kill aptdaemon. 3. You only get the task cannot be monitoried ... message if we don't have a clue: Aptdaemon just vanished (on the Dbus). Normally you should get the aptdaemon apport report. But the apport dialog only talks about a system service and not about e.g. a failed application installation. AFAIK it is possible to modify the apport message: e.g. Update installtion failed. But you cannot rely only on the apport notification to notify the user that he or her action failed. -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/441686 Title: Task cannot be monitored or controlled alert is unhelpful and scary To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/aptdaemon/+bug/441686/+subscriptions -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
