Danke für die Unterstützung und entschuldige, dass es so lange gedauert

Re: [Bug 1090656] Re: Passwords aren't accepted anymore by PolicyKit

2013-08-26 Thread Sebastian Heinlein
Hello Brian,

Actually this bug is very mysterious to me. There are constantly popping
up questions in the Launchpad answers of aptdaemon. Since it is quite a
hurdle for new users to get from a detail in the policykit dialog that
mentions the name aptdaemon to the Launchpad answer site of the project,
I think that it could be a quite common error.

I have got no clue about the reason for this issue. I was hopping that
other projects would also get this error so that I could say that it
isn't an aptdaemon related problem :)

Cheers,

Sebastian

Re: [Bug 1213920] [NEW] Downgrade Lintian to a Suggest

2013-08-19 Thread Sebastian Heinlein
Litian is used to make assumptions about the quality of third party
packages that e.g. have been downloaded from the Internet by the user.
So it is not used as a developer tool in this context.

We could argue if ubuntu-desktop should depend on lintian instead of
aptdaemon itself. But which flavour would like to skip this feature?
There is optionally the posibillity to disable the installation of
recommends if you want to have a low system size.

2013-08-12 Thread Sebastian Heinlein
@Matthias:
A sync of apper and listaller would be sufficient? I don't see any Ubuntu
specific changes.

What kind of internal API do you mean? I use the GPK tools daily on my
Debian box with aptdaemon.

I uploaded an updated packagekit and aptdaemon package to
ppa:packagekit/0.8

@Colin:

I will wait until you have updated your click package plugin before

Re: [Bug 1207169] Re: Please merge packagekit 0.8.10-2 (main) from Debian unstable (main)

2013-08-12 Thread Sebastian Heinlein
Am 2013-08-12 08:54, schrieb Matthias Klumpp:
GPK, Apper and Listaller can all be synced, I think (if there are no
Ubuntu-specific changes - for GPK, the Ubuntu packages were a sync
from Debian experimental, so merging the new packages from unstable
 will work (transition is included)).
Listaller uses PackageKit's internal interfaces through a plugin,
which only works with PK (it basically installs a thin layer in front
of the native backend to catch Listaller packages). Aptd would need a
rewritten Listaller plugin, which does not exist.
GPK and Apper should work with aptd (if the system DBus API is
 complete).
 Thanks for the merge-work!
 Cheers,
 Matthias

I prepared a merge for GPK, too. Unfortunately my upload to the ppa
contains a typo (yelp-utils instead yelp-tools).

gnome-packagekit (3.8.2-4ubuntu1) saucy; urgency=low

   * Merge from Debian Unstable. Remaining changes:
 + Drop obsolete python-packagekit-gtk package
+ Drop build dependency on obsoleted gtk-doc-utils and
libapt-pkg-dev
+ Replace build dependecy on gnome-doc-utils by yelp-tools
+ Raise version of the libglib2.0-dev build dependency
+ Alternatively depend on aptdaemon's PackageKit compatibility layer

So we would just sync Listaller from Debian. It is ok if it depends on
packagekit. It is not the purpose of aptdaemon to provide a complete
replacement for PackageKit. We just want to use the normal client
libraries.

Cheers!

use. Can we be more specific by using the icon of the app that requested
the task, in this case Software Updater?

The question mark informs the user that the dialog doesn't represent a
warning or even an error. That is a valuable information.

Why should we show the icon of the application? Since e.g.
update-manager is the parent window the user should be aware that this
is an update-manager related dialog.

 d. I think it's safer just to pull the filename out and put it on its

This sketch combines these suggestions (except that it's missing the

I don't understand how it works exactly. Do you want to have a toggle
button between keep and replace? What is the purpose of the continue
button? There isn't an ignore option at that point for the user.

The suggested diff viewer isn't very easy to implement. I will make a
small research if there is code that we could reuse. In the end it would
be nice to have a kind of editor which would allow a more detailed merge
of the configuration files instead of the all or nothing approach which
is currently taken.

Re: [Bug 1197727] [NEW] Replace your changes in ... configuration file prompt is unattractive

2013-07-07 Thread Sebastian Heinlein
Am Donnerstag, den 04.07.2013, 09:47 + schrieb Matthew Paul Thomas:

 a. it's closable and maximizable and should be neither

It is maximazable if the changes are expanded. This allows you to see
more changes. If the dialog is resizable it should also support
maximize.

 b. the title is update-manager

Should we use the header from the message? It seems that compiz wants to
have a title.

 c. the question-mark icon is uninformative

It seems to be common for GTK apps to have a question icon on dialogs
that ask a question. Why should it behave differently?

 d. the filename is in the primary text, with Ascii quotes, though it
may be very long

What about the following text:

Replace your configuration changes by a later version of the default
configuration?

The default configuration in /etc/your/config has been changed either
by yourself or by a program. A later version of the configuration file
that would replace your changes is available.

If you don't know why the file is there already, it is usually safe to
replace it.

A copy of the old configuration will be stored at
/etc/your/config.dpkg-old

The last paragraph is too technical?

 e. a programmer-style diff is likely incomprehensible to non-
programmers

Alternatives? Should we add some information that the user should not be
scared by the diff?

This is a so called two-way-diff view of the old and new configuration
that is often used by programmers. Red lines have been removed and green
lines have been added. as a tooltip?

 f. the recommendation is to replace the file, but the default is
Keep.

Done.

Removal doesn't really need notifications because once software is

[Bug 1158117] Re: Control centre fails to start because of an obsolete import of a deprecated and removed widget

The AptMessageDialog was deprecated some time ago, since the concept of

The widgets gets imported but is never used.

Sorry, for the noise on this bug. Perhaps it is too early in the morning
here :)

The new issue that you see Rob is the fault of control center. It
imports (but never uses) a deprecated widget from aptdaemon that was
removed in the 1.0 release.

See LP #1158117 for details and a fix.

Re: [Bug 1125514] Re: Wording fix for Install software to openfiles? window

Sebastian, sorry, I don't understand the question. Are you saying the
API lets you search for an application that can open multiple Mime
types? E.g. Find an application that handles both audio/mpeg3 and
application/ogg? If so, what is the use case for that? Thanks.

Indeed. You can request a handler or several handlers for multiple mime
types at once. I also cannot imagine a good use case for requesting
several mime type handlers at the same time. But that is the given
design of the PackageKit API that we need to implement here.

The same is true for multimedia codecs - and more obvious: You e.g.
need a handler for the audio stream, the video stream and the container
format. In a cornor case all three handlers are located in separate
packages. There is a small logic in session-installer that pre-selects
the package or the best packages that provide all handlers by default.

Re: [Bug 1125514] Re: Wording fix for Install software to open files? window

2013-03-14 Thread Sebastian Heinlein
hello mpt,
but how to handle the case of multiple mime types or gstreamer codecs?
generally not all applications can support all mime types or codecs. so in this
particular case you need to show in the dialog which application supports which
mime type. and perhaps which mime type is not supported add all. the test
script has an option to search for multiple codecs. if you uninstall the
gstreamer bad and ugly plugins you should get an idea and how this is handled
currently.

Matthew Paul Thomas m...@canonical.com schrieb:

Thanks Sebastian! Currently my sketches in
https://wiki.ubuntu.com/SoftwarePackageOperations#searching show only
Mime types only, not human-readable names for types. I thought that if
the OS doesn't have any software installed for a type, probably it
doesn't know a human-readable name for the type either. After all,
/etc/mime.types includes only Mime types and their corresponding
filename suffixes, not human-readable names. (Maybe there is a list
with
human-readable names somewhere else?)

It would be nice to show the human-readable name as well, if we know
it.
So, I've defined a file type string for use in the UI, being the Mime
type, plus the human-readable name in brackets if known.
https://wiki.ubuntu.com/SoftwarePackageOperations?action=diffrev2=27rev1=25
Does that look good to you?

Apart from that string, though, whether we know a human-readable name
for the Mime type shouldn't make any difference to whether -- or how --
we offer to install an application for that Mime type.

[Bug 1125514] Re: Wording fix for Install software to open files? window

2013-03-09 Thread Sebastian Heinlein
I am currently working on a 1.0 release of aptdaemon. Afterwards I will
have a look at sessioninstaller.

There is a very akward cornor case: We could find an application that
handles the file type but we don't know the file type :) Because
knowning the type means to have a human name for the file/mime type
only. Should we show the technical definition of the type, e.g.
audio/x-mp3 instead?

The PackageKit API allows to specify more than one mime type. So we
could end up with the situation in which we don't know only one of the
types.

2013-03-05 Thread Sebastian Heinlein
mythubuntu control center uses the ancient python gtk2 bindings. Are
there any plans to go for python3, gtk3 and gobject introspection?

We broke backwards compatibility in aptdaemon. I will try to restore
it.

[Bug 1125514] Re: Wording fix for Install software to open files? window

2013-03-04 Thread Sebastian Heinlein
I was hoping that this was a kind of test setup and not a real life
screenshot :/

Having a short look at the code I have to admit that the logic of the
dialog isn't very good. The case in which a file cannot be opened at all
isn't handled. That is why you get this strange dialog.

Unfortunately we don't know the path of the file. Only the human
undfriendly mime type, e.g audio/x-mp3. I already implemented some
tricks to get a nice name of the requesting application. I could add a
test if we cannot get a real world name for mime type, but what to do in
this case? Should we point to an Internet site or support platform?

Getting the name of the distro is easy. I could add this to your code
changes afterwards: platform.dist()[0]

You can use the test command in the sessioninstaller source code to
trigger the dialog yourself:

In a terminal session run: ./session-installer
And in a second one: ./test --install-mime-types audio/x-mp3 audio/x-ogg

** Description changed:

[Bug 668846] Re: No obvious error when Software Centre can't install due to Synaptic being open

2013-03-03 Thread Sebastian Heinlein
Good idea to use a timeout. Could be implemented on the
aptdaemon/gtk3widgets level.

Sometimes a background task could block your transaction (e.g. fetching
the latest updates) - those background tasks use an apt-get based cron
job. We could detect if it is part of the cron job or if the apt-get
command runs in a terminal.

Furthermore we could hardcode nice names for apt-get, aptitude and dpkg.

I close bug for aptdaemon since I don't see how we could improve the
situation from the daemon side.

The transaction is in the STATUS_WAITING_LOCK state. INMHO software-
center should raise the visibility of this state e.g. by showing a
persistent in-window notification if the transaction is in this state
for a longer time.

If you need any code from the aptdaemon side please feel free to reopen
it again.

2012-12-16 Thread Sebastian Heinlein
I tried to reproduce it. And all works fine: Software-center ignores the
error (ERROR_DAEMON_DIED) silently and a crash report is created. The
only problem is that the user doesn't get a notification about the
failed transaction. The progress bar just vanishes and the install
button re-appears.

[Bug 668846] Re: No obvious error when Software Centre can't install due to Synaptic being open

2012-11-27 Thread Sebastian Heinlein
Aptdaemon already shows the name of the binary/application which holds
the lock in the status message: Waiting for XXX to exit Possible
values in real life are aptitude, apt-get, dpkg and synaptic.

The status of the transaction is set to PK_STATUS_ENUM_WAITING_FOR_LOCK
on the PackageKit interface and to
aptdaemon.enums.STATUS_WATING_FOR_LOCK on the aptdaemon interface which
is used by s-c.

So basically all technical requirements are there.

An important use case is the daily update of the cache to check for
upgrades. It currently doesn't use aptdaemon but calls apt-get update.
So you can get random cache locks.

[Bug 668846] Re: No obvious error when Software Centre can't install due to Synaptic being open

2012-11-27 Thread Sebastian Heinlein
The cleanest solution would be to use aptdaemon for the daily updates
and in synaptic. But especially the later one would require a little bit
of work.

Since synaptic runs in the user session and aptdaemon doesn't it isn't
the job of aptdameon to notify the user. Sending Synaptic to the front
doesn't give the user any clue that he has to close it. Furthermore it
is a bad idea to close an application without the confirmation of the
user. You never know what kind of unapplied changes there are.

[Bug 1032104] Re: The package is of bad quality error message is bad

2012-11-27 Thread Sebastian Heinlein
Hopefully some first answers:

(a) If you click on a package s-c is opened to install it. the second
dialog is just an error message that the installation tiggered. The
error only appears if you install a package file - it will never appear
if installing from a repository.

(d) The worst kind of problems: unpredictable problems :) And very
technical ones. The quality problems are violations of the Ubuntu/Debian
packaging policy. The user could see failures to install or update
software or strange behavior of applications and crashes.

(g) Isn't allowed isn't true anymore. That is correct.

Thanks for your input!

[Bug 441686] Re: Task cannot be monitored or controlled alert is unhelpful and scary

2012-11-27 Thread Sebastian Heinlein
1. If aptdaemon dies because of SEGV we want to know it. So it is ok to
get the apport report for aptdaemon.

2. It is not ok that s-c crashses too. It should show the task cannot
be monitoried ... error dialog. I will have a look at it. SIGKILL could
also do the job to kill aptdaemon.

3. You only get the task cannot be monitoried ... message if we don't
have a clue: Aptdaemon just vanished (on the Dbus). Normally you should
get the aptdaemon apport report. But the apport dialog only talks about
a system service and not about e.g. a failed application installation.
AFAIK it is possible to modify the apport message: e.g. Update
installtion failed. But you cannot rely only on the apport notification
to notify the user that he or her action failed.
