[Bug 561125] Re: WARNING: at /build/buildd/linux-2.6.32/kernel/softirq.c:143 local_bh_enable_ip+0x61/0x90() [ath9k]

2010-04-21 Thread Shaun Dennie
Looking through the ath9k driver changes, I have a feeling that this
problem is related to the driver defaulting to powersave mode for chips
where the driver isn't stable with powersave mode enabled. A potential
workaround is:

sudo modprobe -r ath9k
sudo modprobe ath9k
sudo iwconfig wlan0 power off

Note: This will drop your connection because you are reloading the
driver.

The card claims that power savings is not enabled even before doing this
but, my connection has been stable for an abnormally long period of time
since trying this. This potential workaround will not persist through a
reboot or suspend/resume but, if it's found to help people, I can post
pm-utils scripts that permanently disable the power savings.

[Bug 180866] Re: [XPS M1330] Eject Button Doesn't Work

2009-07-05 Thread Shaun Dennie
The problem is that Windows doesn't "lock" media. For a read-only
filesystem, like a CD, that's fine. The link I posted above shows how
to auto-unmount removed media but, it would need to modified to only do
that for read-only media.

[Bug 180866] Re: [XPS M1330] Eject Button Doesn't Work

2009-06-13 Thread Shaun Dennie
It's possible to use the dev.cdrom.lock=0 setting, a udev rule and
script to make this work correctly. The solution is described on the
Arch wikis here and seems to work fine on my XPS M1330:
http://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/HAL#Removing_USB_flash_causes_improper_unmount.
With some refinement, it could be tailored to only cause this behavior
on CD ejects (which is fine because they are read only).

[Bug 369629] [NEW] favicons not working in konqueror

2009-04-29 Thread Shaun Dennie
Public bug reported:

Using Kubuntu 9.04, many websites do not display favicons in konqueror.
The problem appears to be related to konqueror improperly using
~/.kde/share/apps/konqueror/faviconrc. The favicons are being properly
written in ~/.kde/cache-$HOST but, if they get written into the
faviconrc text file under the konqueror directory, it obscures them.

I have verified this (and a temporary workaround) with another Kubuntu
9.04 user:

In Konqueror, go to slashdot.org. You will not see a favicon. Close
konqueror (maybe not needed) and then do a:

chmod -r ~/.kde/share/apps/konqueror/faviconrc

Restart konqueror and again go to slashdot.org. You should now see a
favicon.

[Bug 303968] [NEW] Package request for Acme::Bleach

[Bug 221009] Re: Firefox keeps forcing disk to spin up when browsing because its sqlite storage calls fsync() for every recorded entry

2008-07-03 Thread Shaun Dennie
This bug has not been fixed as per the original bug report. FF3 still
causes sqlite to fsync after every page load which makes suspending
disks impossible. This is tested with FF3 updated to today with
proposed repository enabled.

[Bug 187383] Re: System monitor causes Xorg to consume 100% CPU

2008-05-08 Thread Shaun Dennie
The version in -proposed seems better but, I can confirm that maximizing
the window causes it use a full CPU core. Keeping the window small
still consumes about 20% of a CPU core.

[Bug 203068] Re: Slow scrolling in Epiphany

2008-04-09 Thread Shaun Dennie
I can confirm this after moving to 8.04 a few days ago. I posted on the
Hardy messages boards but, I'll simply paste the content of that post
here because it properly explains what I've seen and how I've tried to
fix it. The original post can be found at
http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=750682

When trying to use any xulrunner 1.9 browser in Hardy (so, Firefox 3 or
epiphany), I've noticed that just mousing over links causes Xorg to jump
to 100% usage. A great example of this is to go to
http://ubuntuforums.org/ and scroll to the bottom where the massive
logged in users list appears. Just moving the mouse cursor around over
those links will peg Xorg at 100% CPU for me.

I originally noticed the problem while scrolling and, every time a link
would pass under the stationary mouse cursor, scrolling would stutter. I
saw various posts about poor scrolling in FF3 but, once I was able to
reproduce it just moving the cursor over a bunch of links, I thought
this might be fundamentally different.

A couple of notes about this problem:

- Disabling pango via gconf-editor doesn't fix the problem (and, I don't think
does anything because normally disabled pango in epiphany makes the fonts look
poor and they don't).
- Disabling compiz doesn't fix the problem
- It's not caused by plugins or about:config issues because I started FF3
without a ~/.mozilla directory and the problem persisted.
- In Gutsy, I was using a custom compiled version of epiphany 2.22 built
against xulrunner 1.8 (it reports as gecko-1.8 in the about dialog) and it
doesn't have this problem at all (including when I use it under Hardy).
- Opera doesn't display this behaviour
- I'm running an nvidia graphics card with the 169.12 drivers. As a test, I
tried the 171.06 beta driver. The problem persisted until I enabled the
glyph-cache stuff that's mentioned at the bottom of this post and, it didn't
improve the Xorg at 100% problem but, mousing over links no longer brought
everything to its knees and scrolling was closer to xulrunner 1.8 speed.
Unfortunately, this change made much of the rest of the system very
unresponsive.
- No amount of fiddling with options in epiphanys Edit->Preferences->Fonts &
Style fixes the problem.

Has anyone else seen this? I googled a bit but didn't notice this exact
problem. I'm not sure whether to file the bug under xulrunner, Xorg,
nvidia or even cairo though.

[Bug 70223] Re: Internal data flow error.

2007-05-10 Thread Shaun Dennie
I can verify this on 7.04 as well. It's been some time since I've tried
to watch something with external subtitles but, I have dozens of videos
that have external subtitles in .srt format (all Spanish with ISO-8859-1
encoding) and, with totem-gstreamer in 7.04, none of them play. In
Dapper, they all played just fine. None of the "click this fast" tricks
seem to work on my machine either. In Dapper, I was watching these
videos on a single core machine whereas now I have a dual core machine
(the talk of race conditions probably makes that relevant),

Starting totem from the commandline, I get this with the error dialog:

** Message: Error: Error del flujo interno de datos.
gstbasesrc.c(1642): gst_base_src_loop (): /play/subtitle-bin/filesrc0:
streaming task paused, reason not-linked (-1)

Using the Play->Pause->Play trick, I eventually get a segfault.
