[Bug 528981] Re: Repetitive massive filesystem corruption

2011-01-17 Thread Shot
I think that I will be using a different filesystem for this.

Simply install a vanilla (mainline) kernel from http://kernel.ubuntu.com
/~kernel-ppa/mainline

2011-01-17 Thread Shot
I’m not sure; I’m using 2.6.34-020634-generic (so yeah, that old, not-RC
one) and it works ok. You can also try looking for Lucid backports of
newer mainline (vanilla) kernels.

You can try upgrading the kernel instead – actually, checking whether a
mainline 2.6.33 and/or 2.6.34 kernel fixes this bug would be quite
beneficial: https://wiki.ubuntu.com/KernelTeam/MainlineBuilds

Thanks a lot, Scott, for your through summary.

Is there a good way to install Lucid with the mainline kernels without
ever booting with kernels affected by this issue, or would this require
a custom install image (with one of the mainline kernels on the
installation medium, and one being able to install the mainline kernel
before rebooting into the installed system)?

[Bug 346691] Re: 2.6.28-11 causes massive data corruption on 64 bit installations

2010-02-25 Thread Shot
Marco: By „doesn’t work” do you mean that the bug manifests itself, or
that the given kernel doesn’t work at all?

I’m asking because on my 64-bit Jaunty mainline 2.6.32 don’t even boot
properly (haven’t tried 2.6.31, went with mainline 2.6.30.10 which works
very well).

The custom 2.6.28 kernel(s) that Ubuntu ships with Jaunty manifested
this bug in my case, so I’m very reluctant to try any non-mainline
kernel (the data loss is non-obvious and can happen to a backup when its
drive is connected, so I don’t see a way to safely test a non-mainline
kernel).

Marco: In my case (64-bit Jaunty on a ThinkPad X301 + a 128 GB Samsung

Can you try to reproduce your issue with one of these kernels? (I’ve
been happily using 2.6.30.5 for quite some time now.)

[Bug 382773] [NEW] Background colour change does not work in non-composite

2009-06-02 Thread Shot
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gnome-do

I’m aware that non-composite users are considered second-class from
GNOME Do 0.8 onwards¹, but it would be really helpful if either the
background colour of the sole skin that we’re still allowed to use¹ was
configurable or at least the background colour chooser was disabled when
in non-composite mode (much like ‘Show window shadow’ and ‘Animate
window’ are disabled). The current situation (bronze background that
can’t be changed, even though the control is operable) seems sub-optimal
to say the least.

¹ yes, I know, patches welcome – and being an open source developer
myself I do feel for you; I’m just cranky because the mini skin worked
so well for me in Intrepid’s non-composite GNOME Do and I can’t use
composite in Jaunty because the Intel drivers suck (and the composite,
while being quite fast, is this tiny bit less responsive that I can tell
outright if I’m on composite or not)

[Bug 244742] Re: ruby1.8-dev should be recommended, not suggested

2009-02-26 Thread Shot
I wholeheartedly agree that diverging from Debian packages is a bad
thing, and got bitten by it way too many times when backporting packages
(and having to choose between an older Ubuntu version, a newer Debian
version and forward-porting the Ubuntu-specific changes to the newer
Debian source).

I agree with the Onigurama example you linked; depending on everything
needed to build all possible gems would be silly – but, as you yourself
agree, ruby-dev is both needed for quite a lot of gems and the mkmf
error is really cryptic.

I don’t think diverging from Debian for just this one change would make
sense, but libgems-ruby is already Ubuntu-versioned, and IMHO this
particular change is quite trivial, both to introduce and to maintain.
Being a Ruby developer I use hand-compiled Ruby versions anyway (also
for the unfortunate decision of compiling Ruby with --enable-pthread on
Debian/Ubuntu), but I can foresee this being a problem for the regular
RubyGems user.

I agree with defering the resolution of this issue until debbugs #466189
is resolved (although it’s been silent for the past nine months). Thanks
a lot for your interest in this issue!

[Bug 315833] [NEW] Ubuntu’s rmadison sho uld have wider column defaults

2009-01-10 Thread Shot
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: devscripts

It seems the minimal column widths in rmadison’s output are fixed. The
version column has a width of 10 characters (plus padding), the
repository column 13 (plus padding). For Ubuntu these two columns should
be wider (while the package name column width can be safely made
smaller, even zero, as the package name will always expand it in an
uniform way).

Basically, the defaults which work for Debian do not work for Ubuntu,
while the package name column is unnecessarily wide:

[Bug 244742] Re: ruby1.8-dev should be recommended, not suggested

2008-12-28 Thread Shot
If the resolution of this bug is that rubygems depends (or recommends)
on libruby-dev, it should also depend/recommend build-essentials.

Nathan: I don’t really agree with the ‘you should report this bug on the
Debian BTS’ idea. First, I’m an Ubuntu user, I might have no idea
whether Debian’s rubygems package depends/recommends libruby-dev.
Second, Debian and Ubuntu are tailored for different users, and I’d
actually understand a resolution in which rubygems suggests libruby-dev
on Debian while recommending it (and build-essentials) in Ubuntu.

Jelmer Vernooij:

There *is* a verison of bzr-svn that works with bzr 1.8 - bzr-svn
0.4.13 works with bzr 1.8 and Debian experimental has a version of
bzr-svn that also silences the compatibility warning.

Ah, perfect. Can this version be uploaded to the Bazaar PPA at
https://launchpad.net/~bzr/+archive please? That would be most
helpful.

[Bug 210080] Re: Regression: evince requires two keystrokes to advance beamer slides in presentation mode

Does the fact that it got backported to Evince’s gnome-2-24 branch means
this will be a part of GNOME 2.24.2 and thus make its way (in due time)
into Intrepid?

(A backport of this fix to hardy-proposed would be nice, but I assume
‘importance: low’ means it’s rather unlikely…)

[Bug 275573] [NEW] Please consider rebuiling the package for hardy-backports

2008-09-28 Thread Shot
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: bzr-svn

bzr pull (or push, or branch) throws segmentation fault on current Hardy

I assume it’s because hardy-backports now ships Subversion 1.5 – when I
downgraded the subversion, libsvn1 and python-subversion packages to
their 1.4 versions from the main hardy repository bzr-svn works.

Would it be possible to upload to hardy-backports a version of bzr-svn

[Bug 262559] [NEW] Terminal window overlapping under Metacity/Compiz

2008-08-29 Thread Shot
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: clusterssh

Both in Metacity and Metacity+Compiz cases ClusterSSH (from clusterssh
3.21-2) does not properly place the terminal windows (see attachment) –
the windows seem to overlap by the sum of their window borders and title
bars.

When starting ClusterSSH, It looks like the window manager gets to lay
the windows initially, but then ClusterSSH re-positions the windows –
for a split-second the terminals are all fully visible, and then they
get repositioned to overlap.

[Bug 215572] Re: New upstream version available

Re: jruby0.9 vs. jruby1.0 – this is what Debian ships. The distinction
is most probably because JRuby 1.0 was not 100% compatible with 0.9.

As for packaging JRuby 1.1.1 as either new version of jruby1.0 or as
jruby1.1 – contacting the Debian maintainer (Sebastien Delafond
[EMAIL PROTECTED]) and asking for their plans would be most sensible, but
otherwise both approaches are ok IMHO (JRuby 1.1 should be backward-
compatible with 1.0, not sure it’s worth having a separate package for
it – on the other hand, having a jruby1.0 package that is in fact JRuby
1.1 might be a bit misleading for some).

[Bug 208765] [NEW] Wrong order of Recommends

2008-03-29 Thread Shot
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: virtualbox-ose

The current order of Recommends starts with virtualbox-ose-
modules-2.6.24-12-386 and follows with virtualbox-ose-
modules-2.6.24-12-generic, which means installing VirtualBox will try to
install the -386 modules (which, in turn, pulls in the -386 kernel).

Reverting the order (i.e., placing the -generic modules before the -386
kernel) would at least default to installing the -generic modules, which
(I assume) is the most popular kernel.

This bug is similar to #188579, but not a duplicate; that one is about
apt knowing which one to install, this is about choosing the saner
default until that one is possible to be fixed.

[Bug 196064] [NEW] Power Manager applet appears and shows the wrong initial information

2008-02-27 Thread Shot
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gnome-panel

After logging in to GNOME on a charged, plugged-in laptop, the Power
Manager applet shows the discharging battery icon (although it’s set to
only display the icon when it’s charging or discharging) and reports
it’s discharging in the popup.

After uplugging the power cord and plugging it in again, the icon
disappears (properly).

This is with Hardy’s gnome-panel 1:2.21.92-0ubuntu1 (and I’m pretty sure

It seems to only happen with the icon set from a

Feel free to close this bug as invalid (although an approach that works

[Bug 192132] [NEW] The clock applet shows wrong time offset for Pacific/Auckland

2008-02-15 Thread Shot
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gnome-panel

While both gworldclock and tzwatch display the proper time information
for Pacific/Auckland, the clock applet in gnome-panel 1:2.21.91-0ubuntu1
displays the wrong offset.

At the moment, Pacific/Auckland is at NZDT, which is UTC+13,
Europe/Warsaw is at CET, which is UTC+1, yet the panel displays a
difference of +11.

Note that the analog clock displays the proper time: 3:30 PM in Warsaw,
3:30 AM in Nelson (Pacific/Auckland). Also, both the analog clocks *and*
the differences for Mumbai (Asia/Calcutta) and San Francisco
(America/Los Angeles) are correct.

2008-01-28 Thread Shot
One more comment for whan Jordan said: the policy basically means that
such add-ons should be triggered ‘by hand’, on either system-wide basis
or a per-user basis.

As a result, the above-mentioned `sudo vim-addons -w install latex-
suite` will install VIM-LaTeX for all users, but if you want to install
it just for yourself, a simple `vim-addons install latex-suite` will do.

Re: [Bug 145267] Re: Add rubygems bin to PATH

2008-01-13 Thread Shot
Kevin DuBois:

perhaps it would be better to have the package install symlinks to
directories already in $PATH or to modify the build the package so
that it is installed to somewhere in $PATH

The catch is, Debian/Ubuntu doesn’t control the files that can come in
the installed gems, so can’t assure there aren’t any clashes in their
filenames (I can easily create a gem that will ship a ‘cp’ binary
and upload it to RubyForge) – hence RubyGems can’t symlink files in
/var/lib/gems/1.8/bin from any dpkg-handled location.

(Now that I look at my $PATH, it seems /usr/local/bin is there by
default, so maybe symlinks from there would make it all work. Still,
adding /var/lib/gems/1.8/bin somehow to the $PATH seems the better
solution – although I know it’s not simple to implement.)

Note that Ruby 1.9 ships RubyGems bundled, so that’s another argument
for somehow handling this issue; from 1.9 on, `sudo gem install X` that

is not simple to fix in an uniform, shell-agnostic manner.)

[Bug 151942] Re: PANIC: CPU too old for this kernel

2007-11-20 Thread Shot
It's not a bug in the server kernel that the hw doesn't support PAE.
One could say it is a bug in the installer, because it boots -386
kernel, and installs -server kernel, which cannot always be expected to
work.

So shouldn’t this be reassigned to debian-installer instead of being
marked invalid? VirtualBox will get PAE in one of their subsequent
releases (note: Gutsy’s virtualbox-ose is also affected, so maybe this
should be opened against it as well), but other PAE-less systems still
won’t be able to boot the server kernel.

The current workaround for this:
1. Boot the server from the CD, choose to ‘Rescue a broken system’.
2. Get a shell in your installed system.
3. If /boot contains the generic kernel, then it’s the CD’s /boot; unmount it
and mount it to get your server’s /boot in there.
4. aptitude install linux-generic
5. Reboot and choose the generic kernel in GRUB.

I (the Feisty case) didn’t touch mysql.user at all, and all previous

Note: On my Feisty server, debian-sys-maint seems to have ALL

INSERT, UPDATE, DELETE, CREATE, DROP, RELOAD, SHUTDOWN, PROCESS, FILE,

On the Feisty machine, all my /var/log/mysql.{log,err}* files are empty

For me (current Gutsy) the intel driver turns on both monitors and Fn+F7
still doesn’t work. Unfortunately, if the external monitor has bigger
resolution (1280×1024 vs. internal’s 1024×768), both monitors are set to
the bigger one, the internal monitor then shows only part of the

[Bug 124584] Re: Makes Beryl and Compiz Fusion deteriorate slowly

2007-08-16 Thread Shot
This still happens to me with pidgin 1:2.1.0-1ubuntu2, pidgin-libnotify
0.13-0ubuntu1 (both rebuilt for Feisty) and compiz
1:0.5.1+git20070730~3v1ubuntu0.

It seems the more libnotify popus appear, the faster the deterioration.
Maybe the animated pie-charts are to blame?

[Bug 124584] Makes Beryl and Compiz Fusion deteriorate slowly

2007-07-07 Thread Shot
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: pidgin-libnotify

pidgin-libnotify makes both Beryl and Compiz Fusion deteriorate slowly;
after a couple of hours, the animations jag more and more, and a restart
to the X server brings everything back to the snappy normal
(Guifications work without a problem).

I’d love to come with more details for this, but I’m not really sure
where to start looking. :|

[Bug 42898] Re: Connecting External Monitor does not work on Thinkpad x60

2007-06-22 Thread Shot
Cool, I hope the patch makes it into Gutsy.

Also, at least on my machine, /usr/bin/i810switch is setuid root, so you
don’t need to run it with sudo.

[Bug 87114] Re: APT shows same-version packages as upgradable when the packages are the same version but are different (e.g. one from debian, one from ubuntu)

2007-04-26 Thread Shot
Angel: this is exactly the same bug. It makes it impossible to track
package numbers across different repositories if it happens that two
repositories carry different packages with the same version number.

[Bug 43464] Re: Feisty’s Quod Libet ignore s keyboard shortcuts

2007-04-23 Thread Shot
FWIW, Debian’s quodlibet’s 0.24-2 applies the
http://sacredchao.net/quodlibet/changeset/4007 revision, which
supposedly fixes this (as mentioned above, that change didn’t fix it for
me, though).

2007-04-21 Thread Shot
Is there an easy way to fix this (even in an ugly manner, just for
personal use)?

Now that Feisty went stable, I’d love to track versions of certain
packages in Gutsy and Debian unstable; I initially used madison-lite for
this, but switched to APT+pinning as the more universal and useful
solution.

[Bug 43464] Re: Feisty’s Quod Libet ignore s keyboard shortcuts

2007-04-17 Thread Shot
Reassigning to Lukáš Lalinský as the quodlibet package bug contact.

Is there an easy fix for this that I could apply to a private build of
the quodlibet package (I guess it’s too late to get it into Feisty…)?

I changed ‘from dbus.dbus_bindings import DBusException’ to ‘from dbus
import DBusException’ in qltk/dbus_.py; unfortunately, this doesn’t fix
this bug. :|
